Nothing is confirmed yet but Warpaint Illustrated is reporting (via the Buffalo Bills home page because I'm too cheap for a WPI subscription) that the Bills have offered a 3rd round pick for the services of Tony Gonzalez.
With NFC East rivals Philadelphia and the NY Giants in the running for Tony Gonzalez’s services via trade it could drive up the price for the perennial Pro Bowl tight end. WarpaintIllustrated.com, a team outfit under the Scout.com umbrella is reporting that the Bills have offered a third-round pick for Gonzalez.
Meanwhile they’re reporting that the Giants are willing to offer more than their original offer of a 6th round selection. If Philadelphia and the Giants start competing with one another naturally the asking price goes up, which could make things more difficult for a team like Buffalo if they are in fact a part of these trade talks, which has not been confirmed by One Bills Drive to this point.
The Chiefs have been historically slow in confirming these types of rumors to the media so don't expect much out of them.
If the Bills have indeed made an offer (again, nothing has been confirmed at this point) then it appears a deal with someone is inevitable. We had heard earlier that the Chiefs' asking price was a 3rd rounder but the Giants were stuck on a 6th rounder. So, if the Bills offer is legit, then the best case scenario is that we get a bidding war going.

H/T to Brian at Buffalo Rumblings and AP commenter dkugler838 for the heads up.

I don't think we'll get a better deal than this
My head says take it. My heart says, Tony must remain a Chief forever.

So What Now...?
I agree we might not get a better deal than this but what is this going to do to our already non existent passing game/offense?
Nelly - October 13, 2008
3rd round pick
Is prime for a guard in the draft.
We gotta accept that we are several years away from competing. This is a good deal (if it’s legit).

Scenarios
Best-case scenario: force our QBs to look at other receivers and try to get them involved (no more TG safety net). Likely scenario: nothing. We couldn’t pass the ball before and this won’t change that too much. Now teams will make sure to double Bowe every play (which they were already doing) and lets them put an LB on the new TE (Cottam) instead of a DB. This means one more DB to cover the receivers we already weren’t throwing to. So, all-in-all, this wouldn’t significantly impact our passing, since it was already non-existent.

i know this is
different but if jason taylor is worth a 2nd rounder a player who pretty much said im onyl going toplay one more season. Why would Tony G. not be worth the same if not more, one of the best TE’s ever and still has 2-3 years left in him and is 2 or 3 years younger than taylor as well.
DT58forever - October 13, 2008
Jason Taylor
Is a bigger impact player than TG.
Joel Thorman - October 13, 2008
plus Washington was in a need of desperation when their starting DE's were lost to season ending injuries
aPacificChief - October 13, 2008
Maybe the Giants will up the ante
and give us that extra 2nd round pick they have
Vince D - October 13, 2008
if anything..
They’ll give the existing second rounder because the extra one can turn into a 2010 first rounder if Vilma plays a certain number of snaps
Hoyadestroya85 - October 13, 2008
It'll Be A Low Third-Rounder
I’m still inclined to say that we shouldn’t trade him for anything lower than a 2nd rounder. There’s no way we’ll get that but I think that’s what his value is to us as a player for the remainder of his contract.
Ah well, maybe the Giants will decide to do that bidding war and pony up a third rounder and Boss. Or maybe the Jets will get in on the action since the AFC East appears to be between them and the Bills.
UCrawford - October 13, 2008
I thought it was third rounder?
You said third rounder would be fine yesterday, I thought? I may be confused, I’m just checking.
Ridiculous Matt - October 13, 2008
Clarification
I won’t go apoplectic over a 3rd rounder but I don’t think we should do it because I don’t think we’ll get enough return for what we’d lose with Tony. I did kind of waver a little on it, though, so you’re not confused.
UCrawford - October 13, 2008
Like Most Other Fans
I don’t really want him to go either. And I think trading him will end up hurting us more than it helps us.
UCrawford - October 13, 2008
Umm we play the Bills this year. Anyone else realize that?
I think we’ll definitely give it to someone else if they also offer a 3rd.
Vince D - October 13, 2008
One thing for sure
We will know the results of all this by 4pm Tuesday.
Lanier63 - October 13, 2008

Isn't a Hall of Honor
Part of the renovation?
Perhaps this is part of a move to cut renovation costs because at this rate we won’t have anyone remain a Chief long enough for them to be in the hall! We can build a closet of honor.
New field naming strategy…
Monsanto Field: Growing players for the rest of the NFL.
Sorry… I know it’s a business. But part of the business is the creation of a product that people can get to know and root for. Our product is becoming the equivalent of mystery meat. And I’m not complaining about getting younger. Just an inability to hang on to a few faces of the franshise. Herm wants players who will be “Chiefs.” At this rate, we’ll be running a childcare service and never have anything but a collection of Papooses.
Seriously,,,just sell jerseys with velcro strips where the name goes.
sunny D - October 13, 2008
That's actually pretty funny
Velcro name strips. I may market that!
