Idk Im sure God has a plan for him but its frustrating.

Its not fair for Herm to sit here and waste years of these guys lives. He needs to recognize the fact that he’s not the best man for the job and step down. But he wants to be seen as a leader and a winner and an epic, legendary disciplinarian/coach. If he was a real man he’d step down.
Here’s the thing. People wonder why I’m asking for time. The reason is because I want there to be no question when it’s time to fire Herm. And I do believe that time will come. Is it now? I’m close to saying it is.
Yes, we’re only 6 games in. There are 10 more games. But the massive amount of failures in all things that I personally consider to be the fault of the coaching staff is stunning.
Is there bad personnel? Absolutely. But good coaching makes bad personnel at least respectable. We’d get killed today regardless of who was coaching. If Bill Cowher was our coach, we’d probably have lost 28-17. It wouldn’t have been close on the scoreboard. But they would have had to fight tooth and nail for it. And the players wouldn’t quit. They wouldn’t take bad angles. They wouldn’t lack heart. They’d at least be prepared.
This team genuinely looks like Herm has lost them. Not just the scrubs. The good players. The only guys that played with fire today were Bones who got in during garbage time (that pass to Bowe was nice, admit it), Page (Pollard was the one continually whiffing on the big plays), Bowe and Gonzalez, who are top-level performers who will always show up. The rest of the team looked horrifically inept.
I said this in the game thread, but I’d like to reiterate it. Brodie Croyle is a disappointment. We hoped he’d be a franchise quarterback and he just can’t stay healthy. But I don’t want to overly bag a kid who genuinely tried, had some talent, and whose body just isn’t fit to compete. His season’s over, we’ve got no reason to pile on him. He’s no longer a discussion point.
We should have signed a backup QB weeks ago, but we trusted the coaches to properly evaluate who we had and make a decision that gave us a chance to win. They failed. We need to sign someone, anyone. Lorenzen, Culpepper, someone. We need someone. I like Bones and want him to succeed, but we all know that’s not going to happen. We need to at least atone for our poor decisions earlier in the season.
The line is a sieve. We did not address it in the draft nor in free agency. There’s nothing to be done, but I want the best free agent on the market in KC for a tryout the first day we can. It’s simply unacceptable how bad we are.
I love our secondary. I do. Flowers and Carr also played well, I should have included them above. We’ve got some studs up there. I know they had a rough day, but when you have no pressure and they’re rookies, it’s going to happen.
Do I blame Carl Peterson? I don’t know his relationship with Herm Edwards. Do I agree he needs to go? Absolutely. We need a clean slate and a move away from failure and trying to “just play football.” We need a dynamic offense and a fierce defense. I feel like the defense has been more vanilla since Herm arrived, but maybe that’s because of personnel and maybe it’s because Gunther’s lost his touch. Either are possible. IF we replace Edwards at season’s end, the head coach needs to be very thorough in discussing Gunther’s role in the failures of the past two seasons.
There’s rebuilding, and then there’s making a bad situation worse. There’s starting over, and then there’s settling for ineptitude.
I’m getting close to closing the book on Herm. What really kills me is I thought this would be the week we turned it around. Without LJ, our backs against the wall, the best fans in the NFL behind us, nothing to lose. And we were woefully unprepared in every phase of the game.
I have never been more disappointed in a Kansas City Chiefs football team. And I’ve said that five three times this season.
Thigpen doesn’t have the ability to complete passes, Huard can’t work with that little time behind the offensive line, and Croyle (whether you think he’s got the ability or not) can’t stay healthy apparently because his body’s just not capable of handling the beating in the NFL.
None of these things are about a lack of heart…they’re about either a lack of ability, a lack of coaching or a lack of supporting talent. I haven’t seen the QBs themselves quit at all.
I thought you were serious at first, but I can see what you’re saying.
I think we’ll hear a lot of people blaming the players for this mess, and they do bear some responsibility for what’s happening, but honestly they did a better job than I thought they would and I think they actually bear the least responsibility out of everyone involved. The players don’t write the lineups. They don’t come up with the inept game plans (on both offense and defense…Gunther did a flat out shitty job today no matter where he was coaching). They don’t run the practices and handle the scouting.
The blame should be pointed squarely at the front office and coaching staff because they are not doing their job of either putting together a good team or supporting the team they do have. Herm and Carl should be immediately fired for this performance because a beating like this after a bye week is inexcusable. Rolling the dice on Croyle as a starter without having a better backup either than Huard and Thigpen is inexcusable…both before and during the season. And allowing the situation to deteriorate like it’s going to is absolutely inexcusable.
It’s only going to get worse from here on out until the axe falls on Herm and/or Carl.
because we could be 1-5 and I’d still be totally happy if we were competitive. But we’re not. We’re not even in the same building. And the defense just quit in the second half. Just quit.
And man, every time Huard throws up one of those ducks you see the receivers just look like “damn, man. C’mon.”
It was awesome when Bones threw a strike and then overthrew Tony, Tony ran up to him and was like “Hey, it’s cool, good job, just settle down.” Cannot get over how classy Tony is in this situation. 90% of the NFL players would be pouting in his situation.
When the announcers tried to claim that Tony Gonzalez was part of the problem here because he wanted a trade. He’s the last one to be blamed…he just knows that this team’s chances of making the playoffs while he’s still an active player are nil so long as Carl and Herm are here. And I don’t think anyone can blame him for wanting out. But even though he didn’t get out he still put out a full effort and busted his ass.
I’m sorry that Carl and Herm have destroyed his chances of making the playoffs, but I’m glad he’s here because he’s just a great player and a great leader.
I'm 100% on board with everything you've written today.
The Tony coverage was ridiculous, but it was fantastic to see him go out there and get his 24th 100-yard receiving game watch him be under-appreciated again.
LJ a gazillion dollars our cap wouldn’t be so strapped. I know there’s no way out of the contract, just another thing I’m displeased with. And THAT falls on Peterson.
Gailey wasn’t this incompetent when he was running the offense for Pittsburgh and when he was the head coach in Dallas. I’m completely willing to believe that Herm Edwards is entirely responsible for his inability to run the offense now. And between him and Gunther, I’d much rather see Chan in charge.
They set the tone and ultimately decide how to run their team and each side of the ball. Herm strikes me as the kind of coach who has his hands in all aspects of the game, and it shows with the type of offenses he has run as a head coach. For instance didn’t he hire Paul (can’t) Hackett to run the O in Jets country?
For my money I want a Head Coach that is one of two ways.
1) he hires the Cordinators and lets them do their job how they see fit with little or no input
2) he controls one side totally including play calling and allows the cordinator of the side he has less experience in run that end of the team
I am still waiting for someone to try something new in football with the coaches, such as eliminating the Head Coach position and just use the cordinators and then have a motivation/sideline coach to deal with players and Refs. Then if your Defense suck just fire your defensive cordinators or the other way around, or if your players quit on the team fire the motivation coach.
Although I don’t like the second kind of coach you mentioned either. Guys like Brian Billick and Norv Turner have demonstrated that when you try to do two full time jobs at the same time you tend to struggle at both. I’d rather have a coach who actually trusts the people he puts in charge.
I would also rather the coach who lets his people do thier job. But the second option is still better than the way it seems Herm runs his team. I don’t believe that coaches forget how to coach, Gailey and Gun have been very successful cordinators in the NFL for a long time. The common component is Herm, so in some way he is bringing these coaches down.
I’m not that sold on him anymore. He hasn’t had a defense that was top ten in anything since Marty left. The offense in his two seasons as head coach was more productive than his defense (which regressed after Marty left). The linebacking corps this year, which Gunther took complete control of, is worse than ever. He even blamed being in the booth on the defensive struggles, but when he came down to the field the defense did even worse. Not to mention that in the four year gap between getting fired here and coming back nobody thought he was a good enough as a coordinator to give him a DC job (he only coached linebackers), which makes you wonder if perhaps the rest of the NFL has recognized limitations in him that we miss because of our fondness for him.
He’s a funny guy, I’m sure he works hard, and I appreciate the service he’s rendered, but in 6 years of work post-Schottenheimer I think he’s demonstrated pretty conclusively that he’s nothing special in terms of running a defense. Probably time to let him go…I’ll always like the guy and wish him well, but this isn’t a retirement home.
I don’t care what people are saying, “Yay Herm,” “I hate Herm,” “Run Carl out of town,” whatever. What I’m seeing is a team that’s selling a poor product at a high price… and honestly, it pisses me off. I don’t care if it’s Gunther, Herm, Carl, Brodie, Tony, or KC Wolf — make the move. This community has given too much of itself to this organization to continue to be devastatingly routed on a weekly basis.
would we have won with him running the ball? absolutely not.
but I think he would have done a little better. maybe i’m too soft on LJ…but I kind of want to go make a rap at this point dissing carl peterson
I just am not seeing the effort from him that is needed. Smith runs with a lot more heart than LJ, LJ has more talent but refuses to use it effectively. And besides any loser that has to push women needs to be fired no matter the financial consequences.
For a rookie. Unless the guy bloats up to 400 pounds and has a rotten attitude I’ll almost never give up on a rookie. I think Dorsey will be fine if he gets a real coaching staff to teach him.
Fire them both. Fire Carl for 20 years of underachievement and an inability to get results out of the people he hires. Fire Herm because, well…he’s a crap coach who hasn’t won a damn thing in his career and I’m sick of watching his shitty style of football.
What if Herm has Hunt’s ear, gets him to fire Peterson and blames him, and then Herm gets more power and this pattern continues? That frightens me. With the division we’ve heard about, it’s scary. And I gotta say, I much preferred the free agency route to this inept drafting.
Then he kept playing McIntosh and I realized that the only thing Herm knows is defensive backs. He’s a terrible evaluator of talent and I wouldn’t trust him as anything but a secondary coach.
I don’t think that Hunt is stupid enough to believe after watching that game that Herm should have any credibility. I’m more worried about Carl using this as an excuse to fire Herm, weasel out another contract, and stick around.
Carl’s the biggest problem here…has been for a very long time.
we both admit they’re both problems, you think Carl is the disease, Herm is the symptom. Is that accurate?
I think Herm is the deep gaping wound that you have to heal before you deal with the Carl Peterson viral infection. Stop the bleeding, then diagnose the other problem.
That’s exactly what I think. And I believe that things will be worse if we let Carl pick the replacement…because every coach that Carl has hired has been less successful than the one who preceded him.
All changing coaches has done for us the last decade is mask how increasingly unable Carl is to build a successful team. And if we let him hire another coach that could very well tie us to him for another coach’s tenure. Enough’s enough on that count…he’s done nothing in the last three years that make a case for him keeping his job.
if he hired Bill Cowher? And I’d still say hiring Vermeil was an improvement over Gunther, though I will always love and respect Gunther, despite his recent failures (which of course, I’ll unfairly pin on Herm).
Because Bill Cowher would never come to work for him. Cowher couldn’t get along with the GM in Pittsburgh when they were competing for a Super Bowl. He’s not going to get along with Carl Peterson’s history of bad drafting.
And he’ll never come here because he’s best friends with Marty Schottenheimer and Marty will tell him just how bad it is to work for Peterson.
Marty had 9 winning seasons out of 10. Gunther had 1 out of 2. Vermeil had 2 out of 5. Herm’s had 1 out of three.
That’s indicative of a drop in talent level the further into Carl’s reign we go. I won’t disagree that Vermeil was a better coach than Gun, but he still had couldn’t win a playoff game with Carl as the GM picking the players.
Pollard, Page, Dorsey, Flowers, Carr, DJ, Turk (who’s showing some grit), Dorsey (who I think will be fine if he gets a good DC), Tank, Albert, Charles, Smith, Bowe, Gonzalez, Waters (although he’s probably worth trading if we get a good offer).
I might be missing a few, but for the rest…trade them or cut them loose. I don’t think there’s anything special there.
that most young guys make. Their ability to close, make big hits and make plays when put in the right position means they can be coached into greatness or at least non-suckiness.
Look, our safeties aren’t only playing as defensive backs, they’re covering the linebackers and defensive line as well. Page is easily the best tackler on the team. If the rest of our defense were doing their jobs and stopping the run, we wouldn’t be getting burned on those play fakes.
go on the list, too. i had to retype after responding to an earlier post. My bad. Of course DBowe and Dorsey (though I’m worried about Dorsey. The nagging knee problems and lack of immediate impact is a concern for me.)
we’ve got the Lions and the Bengals as our primary opposition for #1 pick. I think the Bengals will win a game when Palmer gets healthy, and possibly two.
The Lions? that’s roughter. If they start Stanton, I think he might turn into something. But they don’t have any offense either. We’ll need a serious “WTF?” game from them and no more of our denver efforts to snag the #1. I’d love to see another denver effort, but in relation to this, we have some stiff competition for that #1 spot.
Ironic, Damon Huard’s one decent game of the season could cost us the top selection. And the Lions need a quarterback first off.
Which doesn’t matter since if Herm’s in charge, we’ll end up drafting Maleuga and I’ll have to staple gun myself in the head.
I think he’s done for the year. He dropped some serious hints in the press last week that they found some more damage inside his elbow. I doubt you’ll see him back on the field. I just dumped him off my fantasy team, in fact.
We still have the quality of players on the team right now to be a solid foundation for next year. I want to win the games against our equals, and be in the game for the rest. I think we have a decent shot at beating the Jets as well. Anyway, IF we can actually pull in some great young FAs and have another good draft next off season, then I’d say we can bitch and moan legitimately. Otherwise, we knew it was coming. You couldn’t have expected much more.
But if you were a free agent (and weren’t a Chiefs fan) would you want to come play for Herm Edwards or Carl Peterson next year unless they drastically overpaid you (even by free agency standards)? If I’m J.P. Losman next year (best QB on the FA market) I look at Seattle, or Tampa, or even Detroit (where you have three decent receivers to throw to in Megatron, Furrey and McDonald) before I even consider the Chiefs. Until the Chiefs rebuild that line, it’s a career-killer for any QB to come here, and there aren’t a lot of quality young FA linemen available next year so we’ll have to wait until the draft to get them…and based on what Herm did last season, I doubt that Losman or any other FA QB will be willing to give the Chiefs the benefit of the doubt and believe that they’ll repair the line through the draft.
I would imagine that at this point, the front office and coaches are smart enough to spend the big bucks on the best of the free agent linemen for that purpose alone. We can’t compete with the line in it’s current state. That is obvious enough to us, so I’d sincerely hope it is to the GM (whomever that may be in Feb).
My premise, is that with the experience gained this year, the Chiefs will be much better at most positions. We really, really do have some potential PB young guys. Add to that a couple key very high quality young 3 to 4 year players on the O-line and LB Corps, and a QB. Then with a smoking hot draft, we are a team again.
Of course, the coaches and management have to be actively working the same plan.
There aren’t really any free agent offensive linemen to be had this year. It’s a really barren class at the offensive line positions. We’d have to get them out of the draft. Fortunately there are plenty to be had in this draft class, but since o-line was a problem last year and Herm and Carl drafted one o-lineman on the first day and didn’t grab a second until the 6th round, I doubt free agent QBs will give us the benefit of the doubt unless we’ve got somebody besides Carl and Herm doing the drafting.
We need to draft 2 QBs. And pick up a third rookie free agent. Romo was undrafted. You just never know where your star is going to come from. And I’ve decided that I won’t support having Brodie in the Chiefs organization. There’s no point. If he’s a risk as a starter, then he’s a risk as a backup as well. Save that money for someone who’s a legitimate backup.
As far as a 1st round pick goes, if we don’t get the top QB, what then? An offensive tackle? Another defensive lineman? If there were a worthy wide receiver, I’d be all for it.
Oh, and we need to change the nature of this website. We need to start supporting the Lions en masse.
I did see some positives. I’d like one of you smart stats guys to lay out a comparison to the other teams that the Titans have played this year, and see how we stacked up.
1. Most importantly, I am very sad to see Brodie go out like that and wish him the best, even though this answers the question for us about him being a possible long term answer.
2. We, being arguably one of the bottom 5 teams, played arguably a top 5 team in the NFL, and except for the 80 yard run and 66 yard run, had some good stops.
3. Did decent against the pass in my estimation.
4. We scored comparable to the other teams they played.
5. Our passing got a little better.
6. Forced some punts.
Granted the problems are too numerous to list, but putting our players against the Titans at this time, was a definate mismatch. OK, now we continue on. Hopefully, some good will come from it and then we have next week. I knew that this and the Buffalo games would be our toughest this season. I’m frustrated as well, but better to be beat by a very good team, than be beaten like the Cowboys were at St. Louis. I still believe in the players and the team. I expected the loss, but hoped for a win. I am not giving up on them. I know there will be coaching changes and moves at the end of the season, but until then, it is just one game at a time.
on several defensive plays we looked like we gave up, and the fact that our offense is so obviously a failure that even in practice, someone should go “Huh, maybe we should change things up here and bring someone else in at QB.”
I couldn’t see the game and was going crazy wanting to. I’d like to see an honest evaluation of the team’s play by section. O-Line, D-Line, LBs, RBs, Receivers.
How did the new receiver do? I see he caught one, but did anyone see a bright spot? Did Johnston, or Rocky get into the game? How did D-Mack play and how was Herb?
There were no bright spots. We looked abysmal on both sides of the ball until garbage time. Defense put some fight up at spots but then just gave up when the Titans came back at them.
I mean’t to say, if we do well during the off season and STILL lose like this, then we can be justified for them not meeting our expectations, but right now, what expectations did everyone have today?
Speaking of the next significant moment for this franchise...
…I mused during the GameThread:
…there really isn’t a clear-cut 1st pick yet, is there? I mean, face it, we’re looking like we’ll have a good shot at it—is Tebow really the best option?
I don’t get to watch a ton of college football, so I won’t even try to be as knowledgeable as most of ya’ll are. But realistically, there’s not a consensus #1 pick, is there? Or a #1 QB? I liked what I saw from that McCoy kid on Saturday night, but is that even our highest priority? Is there a big time tackle who might be the Jake Long of ’09?
We scored some points today, last game we did not. Everytime I hear him talk, I wanna rip my ears off so it will stop! Can the experiment end already? Carl you proved it a talent scout is not HC material. Herm should step down.
…“You play to win the game” EXCEPT when you haven’t scored in 7 quarters and you decide to put 3 on the board.
With a few minutes left to not have another record of back to back loses with a goose egg I guess you have to have something positive. How sad is that.
…but I was hoping for it as well. The record for total yards with 2 RB’s was broken so I figured might as well break another record.
St. Louis for the past few weeks (on this board) as well as other places was considered the worst team in Missouri if not the NFL. Guess they proved their worth today. Not that it’s saying much, but they won against a team that the majority picked to win-Dallas.
Raiders are in OT against the Jets as we speak.
Detroit put quite a few points on the board. More then we can say.
So who’s the worst? Cincy? I think we’re in for a rude awakening against them the last game of the year.
I predict we will have the worst record in the NFL. I hope the Kool-Aid drinkers don’t make up excuses anymore. There are plenty of rookie and veteran(old) qb’s doing well, so that’s not it. And any other argument just doesn’t hold water. 1 good game doesn’t make up for 5 bad ones.
1) Player of the game: Tony G. even though he wanted “whatever it takes to get out of here”. What does that say about the rest of the franchise when the guy that wants out most, outplays the rest of the squad?…even the kicker and punter which until know were the “stars” (how sad),both had mediocre games. BTW…the FG was good IMHO.
2) Now that we are 1-5 and reflecting on the season thus far, where do we improve? Serious question. I always thought that rebuilding meant having some sort of a foundation and increasing the strength. I don’t see any building form week to week. Isn’t it supposed to be fixing one part one week, evaluating another problem the next and fixing that…and so on and so forth. There hasn’t been any “fixing” going on. Status quo.
3) How sad was the crowd? Saw my first sack head. Showed a sign with 7 straight quarters without a score. The crowd noise was pathetic although the wind was blown out of the place like a kick to the guy.
4) Johnson playing the drums after he scored the TD made me cringe. The funny thing was that aside from one fan booing in the background everyone else was laughing. I never thought I would see that.
5) Blowout – we allowed more rushing yards by 2 RB’s then in the history of the franchise. 48 years. The record set was back in 1977….by the Oilers. Talk about Karma.
6) liked the offset-i formation and then going for the pass. Something I haven’t seen in a long long time.
I don’t know what is wrong with our evaluation of LBs. It seems like every starter we have ever drafted leaves here and becomes a better player. And the reverse of that is when we bring in a new linebacker he ends up playing worse than before he played here. And this is going on 8 years now, and I wonder if whatever the problem is, if it is what makes DJ vanish for entire games (I didn’t see him make one play today or last week – 1 good game in 6 is horrible).
Off the top of my head
Let go: Donnie Edwards, Scott Fujita, Kawika mitchell
Bring in: Bell, Edwards, Williams
Is it just me or how much better would Johnson, Mitchell, and Fujita look than our current lineup.
Where are the pitchforks stored?
Someone text me when it’s time to storm the castle.

i wonder what youve ever even done in your life to talk like that

its not an accident that he went in the 3rd round
I was frankly surprised he was drafted at all

then frankly, youre a draft dumbass
i dont mean to be rude but at points in his senior season he was the 3rd rated QB in draft and had a big day at the senior bowl.

We still haven’t found the low point.
Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
matt, even if the best offensive lineman is available

troy145 - October 19, 2008
It's Not A Matter Of Being "Pansies"
Thigpen doesn’t have the ability to complete passes, Huard can’t work with that little time behind the offensive line, and Croyle (whether you think he’s got the ability or not) can’t stay healthy apparently because his body’s just not capable of handling the beating in the NFL.
None of these things are about a lack of heart…they’re about either a lack of ability, a lack of coaching or a lack of supporting talent. I haven’t seen the QBs themselves quit at all.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
Agreed

Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
i agree with you

troy145 - October 19, 2008

UCrawford - October 19, 2008
i completely agree
troy145 - October 19, 2008
It kills me
because we could be 1-5 and I’d still be totally happy if we were competitive.
Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
It Really Irritated Me
When the announcers tried to claim that Tony Gonzalez was part of the problem here because he wanted a trade.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
I'm 100% on board with everything you've written today.
The Tony coverage was ridiculous, but it was fantastic to see him go out there and

Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
IS there a coach they can believe in here?
I don’t think so
sm7600 - October 19, 2008
I Say Fire Herm and Put Gailey In Charge
Gailey wasn’t this incompetent when he was running the offense for Pittsburgh and when he was the head coach in Dallas. I’m completely willing to believe that Herm Edwards is entirely responsible for his inability to run the offense now. And between him and Gunther, I’d much rather see Chan in charge.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
Head Coach
Then if your Defense suck just fire your defensive cordinators or the other way around, or if your players quit on the team fire the motivation coach.
tevans96 - October 19, 2008
Agreed
Although I don’t like the second kind of coach you mentioned either. Guys like Brian Billick and Norv Turner have demonstrated that when you try to do two full time jobs at the same time you tend to struggle at both. I’d rather have a coach who actually trusts the people he puts in charge.
UCrawford - October 20, 2008
True
I would also rather the coach who lets his people do thier job. But the second option is still better than the way it seems Herm runs his team. I don’t believe that coaches forget how to coach, Gailey and Gun have been very successful cordinators in the NFL for a long time. The common component is Herm, so in some way he is bringing these coaches down.
tevans96 - October 20, 2008
Gunther
UCrawford - October 20, 2008
I'll holla at that.
I mean, except for that Denver game.

Fire them both. Fire Carl for 20 years of underachievement and an inability to get results out of the people he hires. Fire Herm because, well…he’s a crap coach who hasn’t won a damn thing in his career and I’m sick of watching his shitty style of football.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
This is what i'm concerned about UC
What if Herm has Hunt’s ear, gets him to fire Peterson and blames him, and then Herm gets more power and this pattern continues? That frightens me. With the division we’ve heard about, it’s scary. And I gotta say, I much preferred the free agency route to this inept drafting.
Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
i honestly believe
that this is more likely to be what happens.
troy145 - October 19, 2008

Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
Herm
would make a better GM than Carl. That’s not necessarily saying much.
ChiefsDude - October 19, 2008
I Said That Awhile Ago
Then he kept playing McIntosh and I realized that the only thing Herm knows is defensive backs. He’s a terrible evaluator of talent and I wouldn’t trust him as anything but a secondary coach.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
As For Herm Getting In Hunt's Ear
I don’t think that Hunt is stupid enough to believe after watching that game that Herm should have any credibility. I’m more worried about Carl using this as an excuse to fire Herm, weasel out another contract, and stick around.
Carl’s the biggest problem here…has been for a very long time.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
And that's essentially where we disagree
we both admit they’re both problems, you think Carl is the disease, Herm is the symptom. Is that accurate?
I think Herm is the deep gaping wound that you have to heal before you deal with the Carl Peterson viral infection. Stop the bleeding, then diagnose the other problem.
Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
Yes
That’s exactly what I think. And I believe that things will be worse if we let Carl pick the replacement…because every coach that Carl has hired has been less successful than the one who preceded him.
All changing coaches has done for us the last decade is mask how increasingly unable Carl is to build a successful team. And if we let him hire another coach that could very well tie us to him for another coach’s tenure. Enough’s enough on that count…he’s done nothing in the last three years that make a case for him keeping his job.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
Would you say that
if he hired Bill Cowher? And I’d still say hiring Vermeil was an improvement over Gunther, though I will always love and respect Gunther, despite his recent failures (which of course, I’ll unfairly pin on Herm).
Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
I'd Say That
Because Bill Cowher would never come to work for him.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
History Of Coaches
Marty had 9 winning seasons out of 10. Gunther had 1 out of 2. Vermeil had 2 out of 5. Herm’s had 1 out of three.
That’s indicative of a drop in talent level the further into Carl’s reign we go. I won’t disagree that Vermeil was a better coach than Gun, but he still had couldn’t win a playoff game with Carl as the GM picking the players.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008

ChiefsDude - October 19, 2008

Okay
we’ve got the Lions and the Bengals as our primary opposition for #1 pick.
Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
Palmer
I think he’s done for the year. He dropped some serious hints in the press last week that they found some more damage inside his elbow. I doubt you’ll see him back on the field. I just dumped him off my fantasy team, in fact.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
Who Knows?
We still have the quality of players on the team right now to be a solid foundation for next year. I want to win the games against our equals, and be in the game for the rest. I think we have a decent shot at beating the Jets as well. Anyway, IF we can actually pull in some great young FAs and have another good draft next off season, then I’d say we can bitch and moan legitimately. Otherwise, we knew it was coming. You couldn’t have expected much more.
TXChiefan - October 19, 2008
That Sounds Good
But if you were a free agent (and weren’t a Chiefs fan) would you want to come play for Herm Edwards or Carl Peterson next year unless they drastically overpaid you (even by free agency standards)?
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
I wouldn't argue that point
TXChiefan - October 19, 2008
You Miss What I'm Saying
There aren’t really any free agent offensive linemen to be had this year. It’s a really barren class at the offensive line positions. We’d have to get them out of the draft. Fortunately there are plenty to be had in this draft class, but since o-line was a problem last year and Herm and Carl drafted one o-lineman on the first day and didn’t grab a second until the 6th round, I doubt free agent QBs will give us the benefit of the doubt unless we’ve got somebody besides Carl and Herm doing the drafting.
UCrawford - October 19, 2008
QB
ChiefsDude - October 19, 2008
I'll be the lone voice and get smashed, but...

It's the fact that

Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
True
I couldn’t see the game and was going crazy wanting to. I’d like to see an honest evaluation of the team’s play by section. O-Line, D-Line, LBs, RBs, Receivers.
How did the new receiver do? I see he caught one, but did anyone see a bright spot? Did Johnston, or Rocky get into the game? How did D-Mack play and how was Herb?
TXChiefan - October 19, 2008
Rocky got a late hit penalty on a kick coverage
Taylor got 2 false start penalties and the right side of the line is still a sieve
sm7600 - October 19, 2008
That would explain why you feel better
There were no bright spots. We looked abysmal on both sides of the ball until garbage time. Defense put some fight up at spots but then just gave up when the Titans came back at them.
Our line was a complete sieve.
Ridiculous Matt - October 19, 2008
Getting tired
I mean’t to say, if we do well during the off season and STILL lose like this, then we can be justified for them not meeting our expectations, but right now, what expectations did everyone have today?

…I mused during the GameThread:
I don’t get to watch a ton of college football, so I won’t even try to be as knowledgeable as most of ya’ll are. But realistically, there’s not a consensus #1 pick, is there? Or a #1 QB? I liked what I saw from that McCoy kid on Saturday night, but is that even our highest priority? Is there a big time tackle who might be the Jake Long of ’09?

"Rebuild" Evaluation and game day takes

LBs
