Don't Expect A New Kansas City Chiefs Starting Quarterback This Weekend

Herm Edwards said at today's press conference that it would take "at least a couple  of weeks" before a quarterback that isn't currently on the roster to come in and learn the system sufficiently to play.

As of now the situation stands at determining Damon Huard's health.  If he can't go then Tyler Thigpen would be the starter with Ingle Martin backing him up.  The third, or emergency quarterback, would presumably dress with the expectation that he wouldn't play.

Edwards also said he hopes to stabilize the quarterback position by the end of the year.

“I sure hope so. That’d be kind of fun to see a guy play two games in a row for us instead of the merry-go-round that we’re dealing with right now. It’s no one’s fault, it’s just the cards that have been dealt. I think the team has been handling it very well and the quarterbacks that have had to play have handled it well. It makes it hard, game planning every week when you have a different guy behind center.”

"It's no one's fault."  When things go wrong in a business environment it is always someone's fault.  Someone is always responsible.  Accountability is something that needs to happen.

Who, exactly, on this roster is going to stabilize the quarterback position?  Damon Huard obviously isn't the answer.  Tyler Thigpen should barely be trusted to hold the clipboard.  The fact that Thigpen is ahead of Ingle Martin on the depth chart doesn't bode well for either player.  Who is going to stabilize the position by year's end?

He was then asked whether or not the players believe in the scheme he has been employing.

“Yeah, I believe that. Just haven’t executed. And you can ask the players. They’ll tell you the truth.”

I'm not quite sure what his intentions are here but it sounds an awful lot like someone who is blaming solely the players for the unpreparedness of the team this season.

On Larry Johnson's availability this weekend:

“Right now, Larry will come to work tomorrow. The decision on that will take place when it has to be made. I don’t have to make the decision on who’s starting and who’s not starting. So that’s kind of where that’s at. Whatever I do, I think hopefully you know me by now, people know me by now, I’m going to do the right thing for the football team, and that’s where it stands with me. So that’s where we’re at."

I'm used to Herm talking a lot without really saying anything but from this I can gather that Larry Johnson will not be in uniform this weekend, whether that's a result of a decision made by the League or the team.

Hmmm...
It’s no one’s fault, it’s just the cards that have been dealt.

Translation: “It’s my fault for betting the farm on Croyle but I’ll throw everyone else on this team under the bus before I take responsibility for my own incompetence.”

He was then asked whether or not the players believe in the scheme he has been employing.

"Yeah, I believe that. Just haven’t executed. And you can ask the players. They’ll tell you the truth."

Translation: I dare you to try and get a straight answer out of any one of these players. They know who’s writing the lineups.

Venturing a guess...

I can’t find it at the Star anymore, and there’s nothing of it on the mothership, but I’d bet it’s a reference to Pollard’s interview after the game, where he stepped up and took responsibility calling the defensive execution “piss poor” and admitting that he himself had missed two tackles that turned out for first downs.

His point was that if they had executed and the scheme failed it would be time to blame the coaching, but that he felt they really hadn’t executed well enough to say it was a best effort failure.

Too bad the rest of the organization fails to share Pollard’s honest self-criticism, for one of the best players on this team, it’s telling

I Saw That Interview

I thought Pollard nailed it…very good interview. He admitted his own problems with missing tackles and took personal responsibility. He seems to be one of the few people in that organization who will.

I don't think that it is too early to talk about accountability

I totally agree. Whichever camp you are in, the results don’t lie. Change is coming. It is just a matter of when.

Colquitt

Apparently the team picked up another punter this week because the MVP hurt his calf on his right (non-kicking) leg and they aren’t sure if he will be able to play

Link?

Haven’t found anything on it.

I thought I heard something about that last week?
Gretz says they claimed P Steve Weatherford from New Orleans off waivers today.
Nice catch

Thanks!

Punters, kickers Herms heroes!

A punt can be a positive play!

Can someone explain to me

Why he will not take responsibility for the state of the team?

Yeah, I wish he would just say

“I’m the Head Coach and I take FULL responsibility for what happens on the field. The last two performances are completely unacceptable. Oh yeah, and I’m sorry.”

I have not done enough

As a coach to prepare these players, I take full responsibility. You play..to punt…the ball!

How long can it take a qb to learn our system?
Herm Edwards said at today’s press conference that it would take “at least a couple of weeks” before a quarterback that isn’t currently on the roster to come in and learn the system sufficiently to play.

All we do is throw swing passes to Charles, the occasional button hook to Tony, and the even less occasional out to Bowe. That covers it. Mostly the qb just has to learn to get sacked consantly without getting hurt or fumbling.

I want to go 1-15, so I hope we leave Thigpen in there. He’s hilarious.

and don't forget

quick pseudo bubble screens to the wide outs that result in 0 or negative yards. It seems like we throw sideways more than we throw downfield… and it’s not even checkdowns – they look like primary options.

Or the TG suicide crossing pattern

Then there’s the deep ball mandatory overthrow

The 1st & 15 LJ/Kolby dive

The Screen Pla../Bwuh/sack for less than 10 yards

Or the dread 3rd and 7 throwitouttabounds!

Seriously, I’ll make him a card and tape it to wristband:

1st down?: Dive Play/other stupid run (do not gain 5 yards!) preferably lose 2
2nd down?: Try something really stupid that involves a pass of no more than 3 fwd yd.s
3rd down?: Is Tony open (of course he’s not!) force it! OR throw it away OR 10 yd. sack, u pick!
4th down: NOW LISTEN TO ME INGLE, LISTEN GOOD, HERM CALLED A PUNT, YOUR A 4TH STRING QUARTERBACK WITH NOTHING TO LOSE, THIS TEAM IS 1-5 AND GOING NO WHERE, THERE IS NO TOMORROW FOR YOU, CALL A HURRY UP AND WHATEVER THE HAIL MARY CALL IS, USE IT!, IGNORE HERM SCREAMING ON THE SIDELINE, F*CK YOU HERM THIS HOW INGLE PLAYS IT, NOW YOUR GONNA HAVE TO SCRAMBLE LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SCRAMBLED BEFORE, YOU GOTTA BE GALE SAYERS WITH A ROCKET CANNON BACK THERE, BUT F*CK IT THIS IS YOUR NOW, 70 YD.S TO D-BO IN TRIPLE COVERAGE, DO IT INGLE, BRING DOWN THE INGLOCOLYPSE!

At least Thigpen

has some legs in order to make things a little more interesting to watch if nothing else. Thiggy wants the chance and Huard doesn’t. Enough said. I’ll play the guy the wants to be on the field. Besides, eventhough thigpen was less efficient than Huard throwing, he was also our leading rusher in the game and he threw less near-picks than he did last time we gave him a chance. I think if we just play thigpen for the rest of the year barring injury, he might grow into a serviceable backup for next season.

maybe

even a possible starter. Thigpen has an arm, has scrambling ability, with this O-Line we need someone who can break lose. sure he makes mistakes all first time starting qb’s do. do i need to remind you guys payton manning threw an ungodly amount of INT’s his first year. and this year he’s throwing several. brett favre still throws tons of INT’s each year and he makes tons of mistakes which are over looked by his miricle plays that he makes. Eli manning second he gets pressure starts to choke. you guys need to understand this is his first time actually playing in the nfl, it takes time to get comfy. i think against ATL he was nervous and excited about being the starter thus the 3int’s. and you guys make a big deal about 3 picks. umm both manning and favre have had multiple 3+ pick games this season havn’t they. at least thigpen isnt afraid to try and make somethign happen. got to give him credit for that. he try’s to make more then 2 yards on a passing play. give him credit.

yeah our playbook is about 5 plays -defenses salivate over us on the schedule. If a Qb would put zone zip on the ball-these plays might get a yard or 2 (max) here and there
