Our options are incredibly limited at this point but Quinn Gray figures to see some playing time at some point in 2008. He most recently saw action with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season actually winning 2 of his 4 starts.
Chiefs fans will remember him for his near comeback against us in the last week of the 2006 season in which he led the Jags back from an 18 point deficit only to fall by 5 points (and then we made the playoffs!).
The Houston Texans signed him to a 1 year deal in March but subsequently released him in June. Then, with Peyton Manning shelved with a knee injury, the Colts picked him up to compete with Jared Lorenzen for a back up spot.
Some of his highlights include:
What do these numbers mean? Well, it means he has shown the ability to have big games in the NFL, something which Brodie Croyle never showed us. He's never been given an opportunity to lead a team for longer than his 4 week stint in Jacksonville but it's still better than what we've got.
As of now, I consider Gray an upgrade over Croyle. His ability to stay healthy (6'3", 246 lbs helps) and his mobility are an immediate upgrade for our other options. Chan Gailey has demonstrated some success with mobile quarterbacks in the past.
Gray's career highlights aren't overly impressive but remember he's more of an unknown commodity at this point. We know Croyle gets injured. We know Damon Huard lives only on the 10 yards and less patterns. We don't know what Quinn Gray can offer us. Yet.

We Know
That he can hit more than 50% of his throws…which is something that neither of our remaining QBs except Huard have shown they can do.
He’s as good a signing as any.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
Yeah
That’s my point…you can say he sucks and don’t like him but he’s an upgrade right now.
Plus his mobility might help behind our line.
Joel Thorman - October 22, 2008
I Don't Think He Sucks
At least in relation to what we’ve got to choose from. He’s probably not as good as Huard in passing, but his mobility will help him stay alive behind that line. He’s definitely a major upgrade from Thigpen.
I honestly never want to see Thigpen take the field for this team again. Man, what a terrible QB.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
Just think
how bad Thiggy’s stats would be if our opponents had actually caught all the passes he threw to them…how many dropped INT’s has he thrown? I can think of 5 immediately.
PVChiefsfan - October 22, 2008
Life's Too Short
He’s just a terrible QB who’s unlikely to ever develop into a player we want. The less time dedicated to pondering him the better.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
I dunno...
At this point we don’t have many other options anyways, right?
I hope he shows us something.
bigknoxy - October 22, 2008
I think
our offensive line can learn alot from the picture above. He actually had time to throw the ball in JAX.
GHOST OF DT - October 22, 2008
Good news on that
Herm did mention that Herb Taylor would play more this week, but he didn’t perform very well last week. I really wish that QG could play this week.
JasonM - October 22, 2008
Yup
Let’s see what tha guy’s got. It’s not like we have anything to lose anyway. Sure glad he has Gonzo to throw to! Funny thing is, we still have a shot in the division.LOL
GHOST OF DT - October 22, 2008
We do, but we don't.
JasonM - October 22, 2008
Very true.
It looks like the division could be taken with something like an 8-8 or 9-7 record, so theoretically we could still get there. Of course, the way this division is going, either San Diego or Denver will be the only team to approach that, and the rest of the division will fight it out for “Who sucks the most” status – and of course the Chiefs have the early lead there.
One of my favorite sayings is “In theory, there’s no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.”
Seth_C - October 22, 2008
That's a long winded "favorite"
So I hate you for that.
AngryJesus - October 22, 2008
To Be Honest
He is playing us in that picture…just because there is a pocket doesn’t mean the OL was doing anything right.
ashleylat - October 22, 2008
Oh yeah
If he had that much time, surely Tamba was playing.
GHOST OF DT - October 22, 2008
That would have been his rookie year
and he was our best pass rusher that season.
PVChiefsfan - October 22, 2008
Our best pass rusher...
that’s like being the skinniest kid at fat camp.
ashleylat - October 22, 2008
The Guy holding in the picture
might have helped =)
PVChiefsfan - October 22, 2008
10 yards, PT?
The only time he throws over 10 yards is on accident…and it always is a horrible duck of a pass. I’m not advocating for Thigpen to be our starter any longer than necessary before Gray is ready to go, but I will say that it just about made my jaw drop to see his 20-something yard bullet down the sideline (to Bowe, I think?). I forgot QBs could do such things…
thehulk - October 22, 2008
that's the thing about
Thiggy. He has a skillset.
I’m not totally ready to just write him off.
But I’m also not ready to write Herm off yet.
The sooner Carl goes the better, though.
AngryJesus - October 22, 2008
I am kinda interested to see
what happens with Quinn Gray. I remember the game that he played against us in 06 and didn’t think to poorly of him. He can move in the pocket, is a pretty thick guy and well, anything is better than Tyler at this point.
I am actually looking forward to him trying to get the ball out to TG, Bowe and whoever else decides to show up.
Cross your fingers and be hopeful!!!
THS '94 - October 22, 2008
How did they get such a close picture of him?
I bet Ty Law took this picture while he was letting his receiver get a head start.
Vince D - October 22, 2008
Holy Crap that was Funny!
and in the photo, Gray is looking right behind Law, getting ready to pass to that receiver =)
PVChiefsfan - October 22, 2008
Yep, I noticed that too!
Vince D - October 23, 2008
I am open to the possibility that
Quinn Gray may be a definite upgrade over what we have. He has shown that he can play on at least two occasions and possibly more. That is encouraging. My hope is that another quarterback doesn’t bite the dust and have a game/career ending injury behind our offensive line. I am praying that he does well and doesn’t get injured. It is about time something goes right for the Chiefs. Maybe Quinn Gray will be our bright spot this year.
G.L. - October 22, 2008
I still think Thigpen is better
He’s faster and has a stronger arm. His accuracy is a little worse but I think that’s a trade off. Quinn Gray is not good.
CBaller13 - October 22, 2008
Thigpen's Accuracy Is A Lot Worse
His accuracy is horrible. And it wasn’t like those were all deep throws he was missing on…he’d screw up short passes as well. He overthrew Cottam from 10 yards away and Cottam’s 6-7.
And you’re right, Quinn Gray is not good. But he’s a hell of a lot better than Thigpen.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
I dont know
I think they are both bad qb’s. My point is that Thigpen has a little Vick(not nearly as good a scrambler) in him and I think on this team with this line, it’s what we need. I say throw him out there and see if the accuracy can be improved. I will say this – there is no way we are winning right now with Thigpen at QB, but I think we should at least let him try because he does have things you can’t teach (running, zip on ball)
I’ll be at the game this week and I’m almost embarrassed to wear my Chiefs jersey. What have we become? Quinn Gray? Tyler Thigpen?
CBaller13 - October 22, 2008
finaly
someone agrees w/ me. Thigpen isnt as bad as everyone thinks he is.
nfamous209 - October 22, 2008
Has Bones
ever won a game for us? Raiders game, OMFG.
GHOST OF DT - October 22, 2008
Nope
Huard is the only QB who’s won any games for us since the start of the ’07 season.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
I agree
AngryJesus - October 22, 2008
on Thiggy's potential as being not utter sh*t
AngryJesus - October 22, 2008
Worst. Post. Ever.
Primetime you’re losing it. Yes, it IS an upgrade over NOTHING. Those number don’t say anything like that! They say this loser who no one believes in that gets shuffled to crap teams that have to lose because they’re desperate and have to throw the ball every play. He is capable of throwing the ball a long way against crap teams and still losing, correct.
Official Arrowhead Pride Parade - October 22, 2008
Pcch!
Worse posts have been made. Even in this very thread. For instance? Saying Tyler Thigpen is a better QB than ANYONE!
KansasCityShuffle - October 22, 2008
He's Better Than Richard Bartel
That’s the only one I’ll vouch for. He’s worse than pretty much every other free agent out there.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
#'s don't mean anything for me regarding Thigpen
Seeing is believing. And I would have to watch Bartel play before I make that judgement (but in the meantime I’d give Bartel the benefit of the doubt)
KansasCityShuffle - October 22, 2008
Bartel
Was a Division II quarterback who completed 50% of his passes. Thigpen was a Division 1AA quarterback who completed 54% of his passes. Bartel’s a much worse prospect than Thigpen.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
I'm fully aware of the above
It’s just hard for me to wrap my head around any QB possibly being any worse than Tyler Thigpen. Seriously, we’d have to see Bartel play before we make such a judgement. He is Tyler fucking Thigpen afterall
KansasCityShuffle - October 22, 2008
I've Just Come To The Point
Where I have no interest in finding out for sure. I’d rather see 90% of the retreads on that FA QB list before I watch Thigpen take another snap or see Bartel suit up for us.
At this point I’d rather see Ingle Martin than Thigpen.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
Pounds?
No one brought his weight into this
;)
AngryJesus - October 22, 2008
Quinn
Take it from a major Jags fan who was disappointed to see Quinn Gray released (and replaced with Cleo Lemon!), you all will be pleased with this acquisition. He won’t set the world on fire, but he won’t make stupid mistakes and he can make plays with his legs and his arm. Plus, he’s a quality guy. Good luck.
ruffdaddy - October 22, 2008
We Hope So
Because right now things have completely bottomed out.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
I hope this is the bottom!
I can’t imagine it getting any worse.
TheQ - October 22, 2008
That's what I thought
when Thigpen started against the Falcons. Boy was I wrong…
KansasCityShuffle - October 22, 2008
On "Bottoming Out"
I should probably use that phrase a little more cautiously. Because even though things look bad now, it is always possible for them to get much, much worse.
The Chiefs are bottoming out now, but I sincerely believe it is still possible for Herm and Carl to somehow make this season even worse.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
Hey ruffdaddy,
Thanks for the words of encouragement, I hope you’re right.
G.L. - October 22, 2008
Hey with his size
Can he play linebacker too? One player two positions!
Eric Allen - October 22, 2008
Herm can now
Have two kickers, they will run the option with them!:)
Eric Allen - October 22, 2008
Good Times
I’m willing to give them a chance. Look, all preseason and the first half of the season, nearly everyone has constantly posted negative comments regarding Croyle and Huard as our QBs, knowing they aren’t the QBs of the Future. Many have begged for anyone to come in and be an upgrade. Now is that time.
There have been many QBs on many teams that have under-performed, been cut or traded, and gone on to have decent if not stellar careers. I’m not placing bets on Gray, but at least he is a change and a possibility.
Thigpen has only played in a few games. He hasn’t done well, but with the surrounding cast of offensive players, none of the QBs has produced in the past 1 1/2 years! Give the guy a chance! The coaches know what he is capable of doing, he just needs to learn and grow into a starter. He may only be a future backup, but the guy needs a chance with a better line, and offensive plan.
Martin has never even had the opportunity to show us his potential! Everyone is writing him off as a joke, but until he gets in a game and reacts to the pressure and game speed, we just don’t know what he is capable of. Again, with our current offensive line, the challenge is much greater than if the same player was in the game behind the Colts, Titans, or Bills lines.
How about we start getting excited about the possiblities. At least most of us know that this isn’t a playoff possible year and didn’t expect any more than 5 wins in the first place. I’m embarrassed too, but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up . I want the players we have to show up and make their mistakes this year, and learn from those mistakes, gain some valuable experience, then come back next year as better players. Most people have said right here, that it takes 2 – 3 years for a player to develop the skills to be evaluated as a quality player or not. How in the world is it justified to thrash Thigpen after 2 – 3 games? Why is everyone so bent on totally giving up on the rebuild after 6 games? We have 10 games left to identify the guys who are able to stand and weather the storm of this year.
I also can imagine it getting any worse, so I’m imagining it getting better, with the guys we have. Mistakes and problems and all. Watching sports is supposed to be fun, so I’m going to have fun watching the improvement. (OK, punch away! I’d rather you thrash me and my optimism, than the players who are really trying and putting themselves out there on the line)
TXChiefan - October 22, 2008
I have not
Gave up on the rebuild, I have gave up on the people in control of the rebuild. Herm cannot understand why in eight years, he has finished the season with the same QB once. We can all understand it, it is because he puts together junk offensive lines. Why can’t he understand this.
Eric Allen - October 22, 2008
Because
He is the poor man’s Rich Kotite. And I didn’t think a football coach worse than Rich Kotite would come along in my lifetime.
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
I won't get into that
I can’t argue that. I have never coached and am not a football “expert”. I support the team and the concept of the rebuild. I’m willing to let the players play their hearts out and prove their worth as professionals. If they can’t cut it, then at least they tried their best and hopefully, the organization brings in someone that does cut it.
I’m extremely disappointed in many of the decisions as well, but not fully knowing the capabilities of the players and the actual long term planning, it is hard for me to criticize. I am a non-apologetic optimist, so I do believe the org and coaches are doing their best. Just like players though, when they prove they don’t have the ability to do their job, they must also be replaced. I’m hoping that once we struggle through this season, all 18 games, then Mr Hunt will be able to make the right decision based on facts, and move forward.
TXChiefan - October 22, 2008
When'd We Get Two Games Added On?
Only 16 in a regular season. :)
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
Thankfully :)
UCrawford - October 22, 2008
Does PTSD Count?
I guess not, so I’ll just have to claim a lapse into a moment of brain damage. :)
TXChiefan - October 22, 2008
Dude we're going to the playoffs
So those extra two games account for that
AngryJesus - October 22, 2008
Quinn Gray
We’re going to like this guy. He has some talent, but who can effectively work with him. I really regret what happened to Croyle, I was no fan. But I wish him well in his rehab. Lets stay patience and suffer with grace knowing that no matter what we at least drafted well and will probably do it again. I know we all have read this before, just a remainder. Stay strong CHIEFS nation.
vajazz24 - October 22, 2008
I absolutely love the Quinn Gray signing.
I think he has legitimate potential to be a solid NFL QB.
I am also not ready to give up on Thigpen. He has the mobility to be pretty decent, and has shown, on very rare occasion, of course, flashes of very nice throws. We might as well give him a shot for the next couple of games before Quinn Gray is ready.
Although I will say that I would much prefer us at least giving Mr. Ingle a shot at some point. Tyler Thigpen has about a .01% chance of making it as a solid NFL QB, and I would like to think that Ingle Martin’s chances are higher.
And if not, why not just cut him and sign somebody else? Like Andre Woodson?
rockchalk - October 22, 2008
Perhaps, optimism???….
At least he will give us something else to watch when he starts playing. So far it’s been Ground Hog Day!
TouchdownKansasCity - October 22, 2008
Quinn Gray = QB of the future?
I mean honestly, if he does well enough for us… he’s only 29. And we all know Herm would rather not draft a high round QB.
