Kansas City Chiefs Shoo Off The Vultures Despite Loss To New York Jets

Photo_servlet_medium

via www.myfoxkc.com

This team has won one game.  Let's focus on the positives of today rather than continue to point out our shortcomings.  It's still a long season

Stats are here.

The silver lining in today's game is Tyler Thigpen's stat line, who set season high in completions, yards and touchdowns for all Chiefs quarterbacks:

  • 25/36, 280 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs

A few questions and comments to consider:

  • Is Tyler Thigpen's future in Kansas City an after thought despite his outstanding performance today?
  • Is Tamba Hali a better player on his original side?
  • Please don't let Jamaal Charles be injured.
  • The secondary: Great play today or Favre's a turnover machine?

What do you say?  Is this progress?

We were sooooo close!!!!!!!!!!!!
No thanks to the shittiest ref crew imaginable

I thought a few of the no-calls on Bowe earlier were questionable, but the interference wasn’t so obvious that i was outraged. But that shit with Franklin at the end was ridiculous. I bet the league apologizes later this week (not that it ihelps).

Or how about Coles getting away with offensive pass interference on the TD.

So you did change the header ??
Yeah

It was something along the same lines but in a victory. :(

Keep in mind we match up well against the Jets

But yes, this was progress. Picks, offensive consistency, etc.

for a minute there

I thought your prediction had a chance !!

I thought it did until the last play of the game
That was soooooooo Pass Interference
Be proud of these Chiefs
Holla at that.

I don’t mind us losing EVERY game the rest of the season if we get beat like we did today. We looked like we’re improving and not like we justquit (like the last 2 weeks).

What will Sh*tlock say

If he even watched the game

We still have severe issues on account of

well, everything. Particularly our playcalling and execution in the fourth quarter was shoddy. Bad clock management (surprise), not letting the one good part of our game win the game for us when it had a better chance, and overall defensive letdowns late in the game.

Tyler played one good game. That’s it. But damn it, he played a better game than any Chiefs quarterback has played against a better team than Huard had his “dream game” and played with moxie and leadership. The kid deserves a chance.

I heard on the radio we’re bringing Culpepper. Our offensive line is not a good match for him. Let’s see if Tyler can play well in back to back weeks.

Charles needs more work.

Charles Ankle

It would’ve been interesting to see how much more he would’ve played in the second hlaf if not for his ankle.

There's a first for everything.

I’m actually happy after a loss ?? Now if I could just lose something else – pleeeeease !!!

Impressed

With the exception of the last 3 and out which was horrible I was impressed with the game plan they drew up for Thigpen. I think he deserves another start over Culpepper.

If nothing else

I got a nickname for #24. BRANDON “PICKING” FLOWERS

He talked about

how he would cherish the ball is he got a pick off of Favre. Now he has 2 AND a TD

The two Brandons are developing beautifully.

My only issue – they’re both Brandons! I wondered for a while on how to remember which is which until I developed a mnemonic: Flowers (#24) = 2 dozen roses.

-cw

That's actually ingenius.

i like that lol clever i gotta get his jersey now!

I'm going to build a FanPost shrine

to Bones. And everyone that said he was NOT an NFL quarterback can come and feast on crow at it.

W3rd

I’ve been a supporter

Chargers lost!
WHITLOCK IS ASKING HERM WHY HE RAN 3 TIMES!

WHITLOCK IS A FAT F*CK

Um, I believe you have to get f#cked

to be a fat f#ck. Something Shitlock will never do

His voice sounds fat

Like the fat of his neck gets in the way of his larynx

so I'm guessing he's fat ??
It's too easy to criticize Whitlock

without mentioning his weight.

Um. He shouldn't have run on 3rd and 2.

Not with our o-line and running back crew. I like that call with almost any team but ours. We just don’t have the personnel for that, no matter how much we want him to.

haha hes a pussy who will never get pussy!!

a true fat albert

Hey, hey hey, why did herm run on those 3 plays

ya know

the language on these threads is apparently getting worse all the time. it’s football folks, not gutterball.

Last time I checked, there are fans who not only may be younger, but there are more than a few people who are smart enough to express themselves without using a cuss word every other word.

BTW:

1) I wanted Al Saunders to move to head coach since day one and have resented Herms presence ever since. Not saying Al would have gotten us to the big game or not, bu I will say I think we’d have a better team than under Herm " no guts, no defense" Edwards.

2) I’ve never commented on Tyler Thigpen in here before, but I think the first time I saw him play this season made me think he had potential but needed experience. Today’s performance makes me think he deserves a shot to take on th rest of the season.

Cursing

is up to the moderators to dictate and if they feel the need to “clean up” the boards, I’m sure they will.

Honestly, I don’t think most people care. Words exists, it’s only the intent that can make them harmful.

1.) Al Saunders with Tyler Thigpen and Jamal Charles would be awesome.

2. ) Agreed. He deserves the starting job next week.

Good point on words.

I think I heard someone else say that same thing once… mmm…. I can’t remember his name, but he did some really funny stuff, like call people who didn’t look like he wanted them to “subhuman”. Haha, words are fun!

The english teacher

is coming out in you. Nerd :)

haha, no hatred! :)

Can I just say something? I’m so damn proud of the Chiefs today. Anyone else? Seriously. I know we lost, but I’m ecstatic like we did win. What do ya call that?

Dedicated to SeƱor Bones.

-cw

As long as he plays competently

Then I think he’s ahead of Quinn Gray. I’d prefer Gray but really neither should be starting for us.

Ahem.

69% completion rate, 2TDs, 0 INTs. What more do you want?

Do that in more than one game

But, yes, today he was outstanding.

a win

but that seems to be asking too much

And Herm

didn’t give him a real chance to win the game. If he’d sent Bones on a rollout with Tony on a short out, and we’d gotten that first down, we might have gotten it.

But versus the rest of the game, conservative play calling did us in. Coaching staff takes 1 step forward, three steps back. For two seasons, we’ve only been succesful when we abandon the conservative play and just try a balanced aggressive attack. This has been evident in our success in two minute drills. But we just keep hammering a square peg in a round hole. And today it cost us a win.

No, yes, agree, both

Pigpen showed a lot today, and offered a lot of evidence that his horrible performances earlier were due to trouble in adjusting to a regular season NFL game, due to nerves, the speed of the game, whatever. He showed a lot more today than Croyle ever has, so that’s really encouraging. At least he’s proven he has it in him to throw for over 250 yards in an NFL game and make good throws and good decisions. We’ll have to wait and see whether he can keep it up, but he showed some potential today, which is more than we could’ve hoped for after he was so bad before this.

Hali showed a lot more life today, he was in the backfield a lot and actually got a sack, so I see no reason at all to move him anywhere else. Leave him where he makes plays, instead of trying to force him to play where he doesn’t do anything,

Charles looked good, I hope he’s okay.

Favre is a turnover machine and forces a lot of bad throws. But at least our DBs made the plays, they could’ve dropped them (like DJ did, ouch.) And the coverage was pretty good, when Favre was throwing into double coverage, the coverage was there at least. I am way higher on our rookie corners than I am on our 3-year veteran safeties.

If DJ makes that pick

we probably win the game.

but...

If the Jets guy makes the pick he dropped then… it’s a toss up

Yeah, you can't cry over spilled milk

we had our chances anyway. That is all you can ask for.

I want to know

what the issue is with our run defense. Giving up these huge runs is killing us. We aren’t going to be able to make any progress in the wins department if we don’t get some linebackers that can make the important tackle. Seeing those guys break through untouched just infuriates me.

agreed

It looks like they are in position to fill gaps but just get overmatched by the offensive player or make an incorrect adjustment and fill the wrong gap

Its only progress

if they do it again.

Otherwise, its just an outlier

And no, the defense really didn’t make progress. Not if you give up that many points to a team that the Raiders stopped cold.

But you could actually see them building

on stuff, versus the Denver game. The Denver game was more of an outlier. Like, Damon Huard is not capable of throwing for that many yards. Our defense is not capable of limiting a team like that.

Most of all, think about where this team is. They don’t have their ‘star’ running back. There’s been a feud with Tony. We lost both starting quarterbacks. Everyone thinks (and rightfully so), that we’re a joke. But things that we’ve been building for actually developed today.

Do you think that Dante C. is gonna make it better for us...

(IF we sign him) I like that he’s bigger, more mobile, and knows what to do with the ball when he has it.

More mobile?

The guy that can’t get anyone to sign him because of his knees and is six years old is more mobile?

Culpepper behind our offensive line is an IR placement waiting to hapen.

its only development if it repeats

and continues improving.

Neither of which happened this year at any time, really

come on.

we played better. even if it wasn’t a win, it’s a small ray of hope. Let’s enjoy it. We don’t have much to be happy with this year.

it is easy to get caught up in the moment

but ignore overall trends…I’m sorry, I need more.

And let’s not forget…the Jets helped out with perhaps the most inept game plan against the Chiefs that you could imagine….

we need some positivity

otherwise all we’re doing is just bitching.

And I’m sorry, Thigpen played well last week and played great this week. That’s growth.

Some New Things Happened Today Besides The QB

1. We found new receivers. Cottam caught a few balls as well as Bradley. Apparently we have a few more passing options besides Bowe and Gonzalez.

2. Some of the young players suddenly started to grow up. Long runs will happen. We are young team and are occasionally out of position. But I thought I saw some progress on the D-Line. We still can’t ANY pressure though.

3. Charles showed that he can run hard and hit the hole. In the same vein, Kolby Smith didn’t show much at all. I would have liked to see Savage get a few handoffs just to see what happens.

4. Our O-Line looked a little bit better—as much as better as you can look while giving up four sacks. However, some of those came on blitzs that our young QB didn’t recognize (the corner blitz is the one I remember).

5. The Secondary played smart. They were in position for nearly every trick play and many of the deep play action passes. The third and one fake hand off, the reverses, the Brad Smith throw. They were in position and the coverage was generally good. Not great tackling through. They did make Leon Washington look like Barry Sanders.

This team still has a long way to go. And I’m still not sold on Thigpen. But he threw the ball strong, looked confident, and made plays. His performance today is strong enough for me to say that it should be his job to lose now. I’m disappointed in the coaching staff for calling a run in the Fourth Quarter with 4 minutes to go when it was 3rd and 3. Thigpen had completed roughly 70% of his passes and he deserved an opportunity to make a play. I didn’t agree with the conservative Kolby Smith run. I could of gone for a bootleg.

Kolby Smithisn't THAT good.

People really sipped on his Kool-Aid last year. He’s aiight, but not a replacement for Wife-Beater McGee LJ. Or, as Dwight once referred to Michael’s breath, good not great.

-cw

Thing is

great running backs are not hard to find. They’re really not. Hell, Kyndall Hunter for OKState looks like a legit pro. The Giants have two guys most people didn’t know two years ago and have a great running game. I imagine Charles and Smith will look a lot better if we can improve the line. I’m convinced a great running game in the modern NFL isn’t about the runner, it’s about the system. LT’s no longer a difference maker. I mean, who’s really a difference maker at running back this season?

Haha, I bet I know what you're watching RIGHT NOW!

But yeah, I agree I guess. I’d echo that with QBs as well—they all can throw, I’m sure, if they’re given a good line, competent receivers, and coaching staffs that put them in positions to win.

BTW, I’m so psyched for next week’s Great Pumpkin Treehouse of Horror!

And Nate Washington just got JAAAAACKED UP!

-cw

QB is different.

There’s an indefinable quality that separates bad from okay, and okay from great. And Tyler may not have “great” but you need to be able to not just avoid screwing up (the Herm method), but make plays. A great running back can make a good line into a devastating offensive unit, but you also don’t need to commit as much money to a running back as we did.

"A great running back can make a good line into a devastating offensive unit..."

Ah, like Greg Hill?

-cw

Please be realistic here chiefs fans.......

I am a firm believer that each NFL team is pretty equal talent wise, we all get players from the same place. Now, today wad a GOOD game. The effort was there for the most part , no doubt. However, last week and up until today everyone was on the fire this guy or that guy bandwagon!!?? My point is this…I thiught today was a great game that DID show promise from our young team, however, the coaching staff decided to take their collective feet off the gas pedal and play HERMBALL and get conservative. The D went to a prevent zone w/ 8-10 yard cushions and we tried to run between tackle and not throw with a guy who showed you he could. Final though…….these players can win and want to……their coaches just won’t let them. Don’t care what anyoine says…these players have zero faith in their coaches

I do agree

that we lacked aggressiveness when it was the only way we were playing well.

It frustrated me to see a team that played cohesively handcuffed.

I agree Matt

When we were attacking, good things were happening. When we went to Hermball it choked off success. Playcalling makes or breaks a mediocre team, it kills bad ones.

Hali, Thigpen

Too soon to say, on both counts.

Hali is probably more comfortable on the left, but also, the Jets may not have game-planned for him to be there. Anyone know how the Jets RT stacks up?

Thigpen showed /potential/. He’s not the Second coming, here. That being said, his second game was better than any game I saw Croyle play. If the Ciefs want to develop a QB, Thiggy’s looking better than Croyle.

What’s up with the “Bones” nickname, anyway?

This is why he’s called Bones.

No one is calling Bones the second coming.

I’m the biggest supporter of the kid, and I think it’s likely he could be benched by the second half of next week.

All I’m saying is the kid played well today and he deserves credit. We all leaped to support Huard after one good game against a worse defense and after Huard continually showed he couldn’t throw the long ball. All I’m saying is to give the kid his day and not start on the “he’s not THAT good” until Wednesday at least. Give him a few days. We lost, but we were competitive for the first time this season outside of the Pats and Broncos game. Maybe more so, given what we had to work with.

He gets a day.

Didn't say anyone was calling him that.

As for deserving credit, saying that he showed potential and that he played that game better than Croyle’s ever managed isn’t enough?

That being said, I suspect we are pretty close to being in accord, save that I don’t see much logic in pulling him at half-time in the next game, unless he’s being pounded into the ground with sacks, or totally melts down into an unsalvagable heap.

I don’t expect the kid to match his last performance. What I do expect is for him to do better than the start before that, and if he manages to do that, they should leave him in.

Vince: Thanks for the link, lol!
