Confirmed: Tony Gonzalez The Best In Football

P1_gonzalez_medium

Just call me Mr. October.

via i.a.cnn.net

I just wanted to reaffirm what we all knew.  Tony Gonzalez is the best tight end in football.  At age 32, many people around the trade deadline balked at the idea of acquiring Gonzalez for the stiff price of a 3rd 2nd round pick.  Who's laughing now?

Name Receptions Yards Touchdowns 1st Downs
Tony Gonzalez 78 879 7 54
Jason Witten 64 771 3 39
Chris Cooley 67 713 1 38
Antonio Gates 46 534 6 32
John Carlson 46 525 4 30
Jeremy Shockey 45 446 0 27
Kellen Winslow Jr. 43 428 3 25
Dallas Clark 51 542 4 24

The argument against Gonzalez that I hear most often is that he's the Chiefs only target.  That's just false.  Take a look at the leading receiver (or in the case of the Seahawks the second leading receiver) for each team and see how our "#2" stacks up.

Chiefs (Dwayne Bowe) - 67 receptions, 847 yards, 6 touchdowns

Cowboys (Terrell Owens) - 55 receptions, 848 yards, 9 touchdowns

Redskins (Santana Moss) - 61 receptions, 876 yards, 5 touchdowns

Chargers (Vincent Jackson) - 44 receptions, 851 yards, 6 touchdowns

Seahawks (Bobby Engram) - 32 receptions, 328 yards, 0 touchdowns

Saints (Lance Moore) - 67 receptions, 801 yards, 8 touchdowns

Browns (Braylon Edwards) - 45 receptions, 735 yards, 3 touchdowns

Colts (Reggie Wayne) - 67 receptions, 918 yards, 5 touchdowns

Not too shabby if you ask me.  Dwayne Bowe has as many receptions as the leading receiver for each tight end's respective team.

What does this mean?  Well, I hope it means that Gonzalez has plenty left in the tank to grow a few more years with this team.  Or, the next best thing, this season will reiterate to potential trading partners this offseason that Tony can play at a high level past next season.  He's only missed two games in his career and this season he's putting up numbers that will rival (but probably not beat) his 102 reception season in 2004.

Thank you, Tony.

Thank YOU

this post proved my point….I hate hearing “they only throw to Tony, or thats he the only option we have” and thats why he puts up those numbers! maybe he puts up those numbers b/c hes the best tightend to play the game. Thanks Tony for giving KC something to have pride in, in such a dismal year as far as winning goes. I hope he stays with us next year, and maybe…….maybe two more?

hes

kinda of a big deal…..people know him

Tony Gonzalez is a bigger deal than Ron Burgundy

and you could tie both of Tony’s arms behind his back and he could still defeat Chuck Norris in a martial arts contest =)

Do my eyes deceive me?

We could have two thousand yard receiver. Who saw that coming? Not bad with three different QBs tossing the rock.

Great analysis, Primetime

Tony knows where the first down marker is, doesn’t he?
Perhaps he has special specs to see that yellow line on the field.

Thanks, Sunny

Yeah…he’s far and away the best at first downs.

I'll say it again

“god bless you Tony Gonzalez.”

+1 Mr. October, plus one indeed
Ahh

I was wondering if anyone would catch onto that.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh....

Now I get it…

LOL

Thought it was pretty clever if I may say so myself.

Nice post.

Also says something about Thigpen, hmmm.

Thanks

Yup, it does. However, look at Tony’s career….these numbers are actually only slightly above average. He’s THAT good!

Nice little tribute

to a great Chief. i wonder if the adversity earlier this year helped refocus him because he has played out of his mind this year. I dare say we wouldn’t be the same team without him.

Thanks Q

We wouldn’t be the same team is an understatement…

I hope the Landry hat caught this

Every week this entire season, i’ve kept an eye comparing Tony to Witten. Let’s hear them clain THEY have the best tight end NOW…. I couldn’t believe that shit!
