Lots of Chiefs Stats

Stat day is traditionally the most boring day of the week, judging by comments. I don't know though. I like it. I'm pulling these stats from iWon.com which you should definitely check out. Lots of good stuff there.

I'm taking a bit of a different approach to our (semi) weekly look at different Kansas City Chiefs stats.

Are all of these relevant? Of course not. But hopefully you find them interesting.

Talking stats, after the jump...

Star-divide

D Bowe and TG Get Lots of Throws

I wasn't exaggerating when I said that Tyler Thigpen had locked in on Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez the last few weeks. Here is a look at the top AFC targets of the 2008 season.

Rank Name Team Games Tgt
1 Brandon Marshall DEN 12 146
2 Andre Johnson HOU 13 138
3 T.J. Houshmandzadeh CIN 13 131
4 Dwayne Bowe KC 13 128
5 Wes Welker NE 13 127
6 Tony Gonzalez KC 13 123

Tony Gonzalez nearly edges out the NFC leader Roddy White, who has been thrown to 127 times. NFC stats for targets is here.

Bowe's YAC lacks

One of the commentators in last week's game said after a Bowe catch something along the lines of, "That's why he's one of the best in the league after the catch." Which is sort of true. Here is where Bowe ranks in the AFC in yards after the catch.

Rank Name Team Games YAC
18 Kevin Walter HOU 13 271
19 Darren Sproles SD 13 265
20 Dwayne Bowe KC 13 257

Bowe's yards after the catch stat isn't terrible. Just not worthy of an in-game mention IMO. NFC YAC leaders are here.

Who do you pass to on 3rd down?

Tony Gonzalez, that's who. Here are the AFC stats for 1st down catches on 3rd down. As you already knew, TG is money.

Rank Name Team Games 1st
1 T.J. Houshmandzadeh CIN 13 24
2 Derrick Mason BAL 13 20
T-3 Tony Gonzalez KC 13 19
T-3 Hines Ward PIT 13 19

Give Thigpen Three WRs

With three WRs lined up, Tyler Thigpen has the best QB rating. Lots of Pistol formations line up with three wide outs but it's still cool to see that stat.

Rank Name Team Games Rating
1 Tyler Thigpen KC 11 95.8
2 Philip Rivers SD 13 91.4
3 Peyton Manning IND 13 89.2
4 Chad Pennington MIA 13 86.5
5 Matt Cassel NE 13 84.2

NFC stats for QB rating with three wide outs is here.

Receiving first downs

Moving the chains is the most important aspect of an offense and the Chiefs do it through the passing game. Check out the AFC stats for receptions that resulted in a first down.

Rank Name Team Games 1st
1 Andre Johnson HOU 13 61
2 Tony Gonzalez KC 13 54
3 Brandon Marshall DEN 12 53
4 Reggie Wayne IND 13 52
5 Derrick Mason BAL 13 51
6 T.J. Houshmandzadeh CIN 13 49
T-7 Matt Jones JAC 12 47
T-7 Wes Welker NE 13 47
T-9 Dwayne Bowe KC 13 40

NFC stats are here.

If you get some extra time today, make sure you check out iWon.com stats. So many interesting stats to look at in there.

Chris

Do you think any coaches should be fired this off-season? Who?

Gunther

I’m about 80% on that. He hasn’t and really can’t deliver a good defense.

I’m not on the fire special teams coach Mike Priefer. He’s had too many different players to even begin to have any consistent success.

Special Teams Always Has Changeover

It’s generally for young players and scrubs…so I don’t think Priefer should get a pass because he has to deal with something that pretty much every other special teams coordinator out there has to deal with.

And remember, he didn’t want to bring in competition for Medlock and he picked Nick Novak over Connor Barth.

about the 3 WR's

if Crabtree declares, could he be considered a legitimate option at BPA when our first pick comes up? (I don’t know that much about him)

Supposed to be awesome

But, in my mind, that’s a luxury pick at this point. Rookie wide receivers are about the lowest impact pick in the 1st round anyway.

Maybe we should hire Matt Millen...

Seriously. WR is probably the only spot where we are not in dire straights. It’s all good to take the best player available, but if they don’t bust (which most WR’s do) they can’t help your team enough to turn it around.. See Detroit. Even Arizona needed a resurrected Warner and a putrid division to make those WR’s pay off and they still can’t beat a good team. Crabtree is great for a fantasy team, but would be horrible for the Chiefs.

Besides, if we win one more game it will probably be moot cause Al Davis will take him since there are no stud RB’s at the top of the board.

Plus

The Raiders receiving corps is a mess. I think you’re right and Crabtree ends up a Raider.

The whole organization is a mess

Word has it that Al Davis has contacted the Senate about hearings for a bailout.

Al Davis testimony at bailout hearing

Senator: So what is your plan for turning this thing around?

Al: Just win baby!!!

Senator: We need something more concrete than that…

Al: Let me pull up my charts here that show that if we draft enough running backs, we can make a RB offensive line. These will protect our QB with the big arm that will throw down field for Usain Bolt. We plan to use the 3 qajillion dollar bail out today to sign Bolt to a 25 year deal.

Senator: Sir, are you aware that your jump suit is unzipped and you aren’t wearing any underwear?

Al: NIXON FOR PRESIDENT!!!! Just win baby!!!!
