Lanier63 broke this in the FanPost section so thank him for that. Consider this the morning update. We'll be finishing the mock draft today as well! -Chris
It's official. Jared Allen has been traded to the Vikings. We are receiving good compensation though. We will receive their 1st round pick and their 2 3rd round picks. This will give us 6 picks in the first 100. This gives us 13 picks total. Also, the Chiefs and Vikings swapped 6th round picks, #170 #187 for #182.
Allen's contract with Minnesota is reportedly six years for almost $74 million with more than $31 million guaranteed.
Now, would I rather have Allen? Yes, of course. But, let's face it, he didn't want to be here so at least we got a good value in return for him. We have a lot of room to be moving in the draft now.
We can take the guy we want with the #5, probably defense. Then with the #17 overall pick, and few 3rd rounders, we can probably get our hands on a few offensive linemen.
He's been traded. We can't do anything about it. As Chiefs fans, we just have to accept it. It's time to look forward. The draft just got a lot more interesting.

The DBowe Show - April 23, 2008
Not really
If we had forced Allen to play this season under the franchise he would have been pissed, his production might have fallen off, or he could have developed into a cancer in the locker room (or he could have cheered himself up with some “Jared Juice”)...then after the 2008 season, he would have left with us getting no compensation or we would have franchised him again, and pissed him off even more. We may never know all the behind-the-scenes details, but it is pretty evident that Allen wanted no part of playing for this team anymore. He had a great season, and he’s my favorite player on the Chiefs, but even I don’t think he was worth 74 million with 31 million guaranteed. If he celebrates at the bar, the Vikings are screwed.
PVChiefsfan - April 23, 2008
Exactly...
Unless a near-miracle happened, this was going to be JA’s last year in KC.
Might as well pick up some nice, solid picks for him instead of just letting him walk…
rockchalk - April 23, 2008
Carl Peterson will be gone after 2009
Then this BS will hopefully stop.
Chris Thorman - April 23, 2008
Time to look forward as well
If the Chiefs wanted a rebuild, then they’re right where they should be with 13 draft picks.
Chris Thorman - April 23, 2008
And quality picks at that…
JasonB - April 23, 2008
We have to look at this logically
Yes, Jared Allen is the prototypical player we are looking for in the draft. Young, dynamic, great player, team leader. But, realistically, this team is probably at least 2 and more likely 3 years from being serious contenders (though those extra picks might help shorten that time).
The fact is that while Jared might be worth that 74 million dollar contract TODAY, will he still be worth it in 3 years? We have no way of knowing. And in the meantime, we would be shelling out a ton of money for a player that, while a great player, is not going to turn us from a 4-12 team to a 12-4 team on his own.
ChiefDJ - April 23, 2008
Past history
We aren’t taking the gamble that he won’t get in trouble again.
Joel Thorman - April 23, 2008
Not a bad haul for Allen
For a team on the brink of rebuilding, stockpiling picks is always a good thing. Two third round picks could easily be exchanged to get you up into the second round as well. Two first rounders and two second rounders is a nice way to stockpile some young talent.
cgolden - April 23, 2008
Anyone remember
when the Chiefs high tendered Allen in early 2007? If a team wanted him, they would have had to give up a 1st and a 3rd round pick.
A bit interesting.
Chris Thorman - April 23, 2008
Get more picks
As I try to cope with losing this great and immensely entertaining football player (even though I think the trade was fair and that the Vikings are probably overpaying him and definitely taking a character risk), one thing seems pretty clear: the Chiefs must resist the temptation to move up and strongly consider any decent offers for the #5 pick. Some other team is going to pay handsomely to get their hands on Gholston, Ellis, or (if still available) Ryan or McFadden. We certainly don’t need to be paying more guaranteed money to a higher pick.
chiefstatnut - April 23, 2008
That Jake Long deal was ridiculous
I sure hope he pans out…otherwise, the Dolphins will have the most overpaid right tackle in the league :)
PVChiefsfan - April 23, 2008
Decent Trade
Not great, but decent, and it keeps us from having to deal with a distraction all season. Also…screw Mike & Mike, I’ve rarely heard an opinion out of them that seemed to be well-researched. Jared Allen was a very good player for us, but he’s also a player who’s one strike away from a yearlong suspension and to us isn’t worth the guaranteed money he’s getting…and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the sniping in the press and the whining on his part (not to mention that he was apparently lying about being willing to talk long-term deal here until July) it’s that Jared Allen is still immature. Let’s see how well he does when he’s not being forced to be on his best behavior in a contract year. Let’s see what Mike & Mike have to say if Allen screws up and gets a suspension (like Dale Carter did after he signed with the Broncos).
For the draft pick, I’d love it if Chris Long was available, but I don’t think that Long is going to slip past Oakland. Most of the “experts” seem to think that Al Davis is going after McFadden…but if Long slips past St. Louis and Atlanta I think he’s definitely going to draft Howie Long’s kid. Al loves his history too much, he’s got Justin Fargas already under a long-term contract, Chris Long fits a need for them, and it screws us over. There’s no way Chris Long reaches us. Unless we’re looking at trading up to #2 or #3 we’ll be looking at Gholston, a DT, reaching for an o-lineman, or trading down.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
Agreed
What do you think about Gholston?
Joel Thorman - April 23, 2008
Gholston
I think he’ll be a solid NFL player. I don’t like him as much as Chris Long, but if the Chiefs aren’t going to trade down and they don’t want a defensive tackle (if Ellis and Dorsey are gone) I’d rather the Chiefs drafted him instead of reaching for an offensive lineman with that pick. I think he’s the fifth best player for us out of the top six…the only thing that bothers me about him is the tweener thing, but then he was excellent in a good football conference and not just in workouts, so I think that’s not a huge concern. He’s not just a workout wonder like Mike Mamula (who was inconsistent in college, and who apparently had a lot of injuries, which accounts for some of his problems). Jason Taylor’s had a very good career as a tweener.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
On The Plus Side
As somebody else on these threads pointed out, you can find good defensive ends in the lower rounds. We found Jared Allen in the fourth after all. I’d still prefer that we drafted Sedrick Ellis or Glenn Dorsey before we draft Vernon Gholston. Defensive tackle is a need and they’re much harder to find than ends. We seem to have soured on Ellis though, and I’m not sure why. I don’t know how much we could possibly have learned about the guy from Krumrie’s stupid slap-drill. He was consistently good in college and his injury history hasn’t been that severe. He wasn’t great at the combines, but then I think the combines are kind of a joke anyway.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
I think Gholston will be awesome...
in the 3-4 D as an OLB.
I’m not nearly as thrilled about him in a 4-3, where I think he will only be ‘good’ if he is put there.
So yea, I don’t want to take Gholston if he is there…
rockchalk - April 23, 2008
Rushbacker?
Gholston being a tweener might actually work for us if we want to do that hybrid 3-4/4-3 defense that we tried with Thomas. He can rush the passer, and that’s something we’ll need…guess it depends on what the Chiefs think of the rest of his game. As far as listed weights go, he’s only 4 pounds lighter than Jared Allen, which isn’t that big of a deal.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
Obviously it all depends on what you guys do with the picks you got… but on it’s face I think the Chiefs got the better end of this deal.
That said, it very well could work out well for both teams.
JasonB - April 23, 2008
Vikings SB Chances...
...aren’t as good as they seem to think if they’ve still got Tavaris Jackson as their QB. That guy reeked. If they’d had even a league average QB last year they’d have made a run in the playoffs I think.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
True, the ViQueens' QB stinks, but...
... if Allen wants to make good on his publicly stated goal of making it to the HoF, he has an ideal environment to make that push the next few seasons. As long as the Williamses are healthy (and let me include in the definition of “healthy” a qualifier about being less than 500 pounds each), the Minnesota line should be a terror. I’m grateful the Chiefs don’t play the NFC North again until 2010, although probably not as thankful as Brodie Croyle is.
chiefstatnut - April 23, 2008
Regarding Sedrick Ellis...
...has Peterson ever signed a high-caliber player from USC? I can’t think of any off the top of my head. He’s only ever drafted one Trojan during his time here (Larry Parker in the 4th round of 1999). I know that Peterson’s got a severe UCLA jones (which may be why he drafted Medlock over Crosby last year) but do you guys think he might be passing up Sedrick Ellis because the guy went to USC?
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
I wouldn't put it past him
Good call. Carl’s personal grudges know no limits.
chiefstatnut - April 23, 2008
No way
Even Carl Peterson wouldn’t take his personal feelings that far.
Chris Thorman - April 23, 2008
The Reason I Ask...
...is because there’s a lot of talent from USC in this year’s draft, including two decent offensive linemen who may very well fall to us (Sam Baker, Chilo Rachal). I’m just curious if Peterson’s even looking at them.
No way of really knowing, I suppose…but I found it interesting that he doesn’t seem interested in getting players from one of the most successful teams in college sports.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
Sammy Knight Was A Trojan
Beyond that, I can’t find anyone else.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
5 UCLA draft picks
and 1 USC draft pick since he started.
I think he’s more a pro-UCLA guy and less a USC hater.
Chris Thorman - April 23, 2008
Problem Is...
Those numbers should be reversed, based on what USC’s done over the last few years compared to UCLA. Love them or hate them, Southern Cal has put a lot of talent into the NFL over the years and having only two of their players in 19 years just smells a little fishy to me.
Although I sure wouldn’t have minded seeing Maurice Jones-Drew in a Chiefs uniform.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
Jimmy WIlkerson
I think it’s safe to say that when we failed to sign Wilkerson, we had a pretty good idea that we might also be losing Allen. Admittedly, Wilkerson was not an elite player, but why would KC let him go under these circumstances. Wilkerson’s departure makes the loss of Allen that much more dramatic, because we now need not only a starter, but also more depth at the position. The jury is still out on Turk. Thoughts?
arcticmango - April 23, 2008
He Wasn't That Good
I think Wilkerson can be replaced with a second-day draftee.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
I agree
The Chiefs wouldn’t be looking to make him the starter anyway.
Chris Thorman - April 23, 2008
No Clue On Turk
Neil Smith didn’t have a great rookie season either…so maybe he just needs a little seasoning and he’ll be fine. Guess we’ll find out.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
Thanks from a Vikes fan
We are ecstatic up here. Our annual brawls…I mean pre-season workouts with you guys should be interesting. I am interested to see what you do with the picks you acquired from the purple. This is a deal we had to do. Why? Because a lot of our all-pros are getting old, this year might be the “run” of their careers. Now if only you had a decent QB to trade us….
Odin - April 23, 2008
As you should be
The Vikings are the proud recipients of a front office feud turned ugly.
You’re welcome.
Chris Thorman - April 23, 2008
After Everything Is Said And Done...
...I’m not so sure that Carl Peterson deserves the lion’s share of the blame for the blowup with Allen. Or that signing Allen to a long-term deal was a great idea.
We’ll see after a couple of years.
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
Now That You Mention It...
...Damon Huard appears to be healthy this year and I’m sure we’ll part with him for the bargain price of a 2nd round pick. He’s no All-Pro, but he’s better than Jackson and he’ll be well-suited to a run-happy offense :)
UCrawford - April 23, 2008
Huard would succeed in Minnesota
Joel Thorman - April 23, 2008
Huards worth
We won’t trade you are second rounder, but I would consider giving you back your sixth round pick that we just acquired. LOL
