I'm a bit busy as I tie down the final loose ends at work this week so I'm going to throw out a topic that I read about on a Chiefs' message board - Which former Kansas City Chief can you absolutely not stand? Who do you hate?

Like many of the posters in that forum said, I'm going to say Elvis Grbac. He spoke at a school event I was at and you could see his smugness as soon as he stepped into the auditorium. Plus, he was a terrible player. That could have something to do with it.

Not really hating
I don’t hate Willie Roaf, but really, he could have given us a little more time. I thought he was extremely rude/unproffessional by quitting when he did. We were scrambling to fill his position and we still haven’t recovered. I think he may have singlehandedly destroyed us for 2 years, and only now do we have a chance to recover. I mean, all he had to do was let us know before the draft, and not on July 28th. If he did, we would have been able to prepare a lot better. I do love him for the wonderful effort/years that he did give us, but the way he went out was absolutely appalling.
My second would be Neil Smith. I couldn’t believe it when he left us for the DONKS. And to top it all off, he freaking played for the Chargers too!! WTF?? I could’ve forgiven him if the Bronco’s sucked when he was there, but 2 SB’s?? If he went there and hated it, I would have said that karma’s a bitch but everything would be even then, but because he won 2 while there, we totally got the crappy end of that deal, and I can’t forgive him for it.

Can't Fault Roaf or Smith
Roaf was productive for us during his time here, he missed quite a bit of the previous season with injuries, he knew that team wasn’t going to the Super Bowl even if he suited up, and he’d had a lot of miles on the body. At that point he’s earned the right to hang them up when he wants…and it’s not like the Chiefs shouldn’t have figured that time would be coming around soon. The dude was in his 30s and the reason we didn’t have his replacement was because King Carl ignored the line during the draft and ran off John Tait.
As for Neil Smith, the Chiefs figured he was close to the end and weren’t interested in re-signing him to the deal he wanted. That’s just the way things go and once it happens he doesn’t owe his former team anything. He was outstanding for us when he was in a Chiefs uniform, he didn’t embarass us off the field, so we’ve got nothing to complain about.

But I still don’t like it. I haven’t been really following football (at least this much) until recently, but I remember those two specifically. I probably would have done the same thing as them in their situations. I guess I can’t fault them when Management was to blame for not expecting/preparing for those types of things to happen

He had a good first season with us, then turned into a complete ass.
McGlockton would be up there as well, although frankly I think the Chiefs were stupid to sign him considering that he was a known problem child with the Raiders. Apparently Art Shell (during his first stint as head coach) hated him so much that he actually ran a drill where he lined up against McGlockton one-on-one and absolutely flattened him in front of the team just to embarass the guy and straighten out his attitude. Didn’t work.

As For Lin Elliott (Yes, I Said His Name)
He was a crappy kicker who the Chiefs never should have picked up after his horrible stint with the Cowboys, but he didn’t shank those field goals on purpose or behave like an ass, so I don’t think he belongs anywhere on this list. The guy did the best he could and he simply didn’t have the ability to pull it off…not really his fault. It was Peterson’s fault for signing him and keeping him around when anyone with half a brain knew he wasn’t reliable (the dude missed three extra points in ‘95).
And Paul Hackett was the one who lost us that game against Indianapolis…not the kicker.

Apparently you weren’t AT the game, freezing your ass off in the sub-zero windchill. It was excruciating. Not to prolong the discussion about this guy, but let’s revisit the facts: He missed THREE field goal attempts (from 35, 39, and 42 yards). The heavily favored, 13-3 Chiefs lost the game 10-7. Nick Lowery missing a 50 yard field goal against Miami is one thing. Missing THREE field goals, all inside 42 yards, at home – that is SICK.

Think maybe the winds might have had an adverse effect on kicking conditions? Or that maybe, just maybe, when your kicker is struggling your offensive coordinator should probably get a fucking clue and adjust accordingly? Like maybe tailoring the game plan to favor the run against a team giving up 4.6 ypc to your running backs instead of having Steve Bono air it out in windy, freezing conditions in a game that where you never trailed by more than a field goal?

There is no doubt that Hackett was an idiot and cost us on multiple occasions. I loathed him as much as anyone. But you HAVE to assume that your starting kicker can make at least 1 of 3 field goals. Don’t you??? But you’re right – giving the ball to Bono in that game was insane.

You're Overrating Elliott
I’m sorry, but when you’re in crappy conditions and you’ve got a kicker who has missed extra points in all but one season that he played I don’t think you can assume anything of the sort. Elliott choked regularly in his stint with the Cowboys, that’s why Jimmie Johnson dumped him (quite harshly as I recall). Once he shanked the first field goal (and definitely after he shanked the second) Paul Hackett should have treated every possession as a four-down situation and adjusted the game plan. The biggest problem was, however, that Indianapolis had the worst rushing defense in the league that year, the Chiefs had the best rushing offense and yet Hackett put the ball in Bono’s hands as much as the RBs against a pretty solid pass Indy pass D (which created a situation where we had to rely on Elliott because we couldn’t get first downs).
Don’t get me wrong…the kicker blew it. But kickers occasionally have bad games due to weather or nerves, and good coaches adjust when it happens. Hackett didn’t, and that’s why the loss was his fault.

Not Bam Morris
Trezelle Jenkins and Dan Williams, not so much hated, as consistently disappointing.
Dale Carter annoyed me off the field but at least he had a lot of talent to back it up.
Grbac versus Bono is tought to tell, they kind of mesh together in my memory.
The one who shall not be mentioned is probably my top pick.
I would put in an honorable mention for Kyle Turley and Chris Terry after last season. Sure they made Turley switch positions but he obviously was phoning it in towards the end of the season.

He should be excluded from the list not only because he was an excellent player on the field for us, but because once he left as a free agent he signed with our rivals for a big contract and stunk it up on the field before getting busted for drug abuse…thereby screwing their team and their salary cap.

I think that by the time he got to the Chiefs, he was pretty much done physically, so I can’t really blame him…all players hit the wall eventually, even when they do try. He couldn’t play at his ideal weight because his back was so bad and when he dropped weight he got manhandled.
As for giving up last year…well, I think there was a lot of that going on once everyone realized how bad that team was talent-wise, so I don’t know that you can single him out in particular.

So Jared Allen’s basically acting like a little petulant child…big surprise. The guy comes off as pretty much an insecure moron in every interview I’ve ever heard with him so stupid comments coming out of his mouth don’t surprise me. Easily my least favorite player of last season. I screamed obscenities at him on more than a couple of occasions when he screwed up returns. Quite possibly the worst kick returner I’ve ever seen play for the Chiefs.

Apparently Drummond was the son of a friend of Mike Priefer or something. He got in because he had a friendly connection to the Chiefs’ coaching staff…which makes the Chiefs choosing him over Justin Phinnissee even worse. Whitlock found out about it last season and said something in one of his columns.

how is that not entertaining? Last year at this time we were probably 10 games out of first, maybe more. If you are looking for an idea of this club check out the 1990 ATL Braves. They had a ton of young positional talent, and a young pitching staff. Look at the guys and compare them to the 2008 Royals. It’s scary how similar the 2 teams are. And the Braves went on a winning streak in 1991-2004. I see that happening with us, maybe not as long, but we will win alot of games in the near future!
