For some reason you need a log in to this newspaper site but I'm sure the bit I was able to glean is correct - Jacksonville State wide receiver Taurean Rhetta has signed a free agent contract to play for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Can you name a former Chiefs' WR who went to a similarly named college? One of the biggest storms I can remember passed through Kansas City last night, making my apartment light up like there were paparazzi outside (Okay, I sort of stole that like from Chiefs' FB Chris Manderino's blog). I don't think I ever seen such a sustained amount of lightning or heard such continuous thunder rolling.
We've gotten a lot of new visitors around here since last weekend's draft so I wanted to mention a couple of things. First, if you haven't already, sign up for an account here. You can do that at the top of this page. Even if you don't plan on commenting, at least sign up and log in because you'll be able to see notices of which comments you've read and which one's you haven't. That is one of the most indispensable features of SBN in my opinion.
We don't sell e-mail addresses or anything like so don't worry about giving up an e-mail address.
And finally just a quick note about our community. All opinions are welcome and ones that are boring or inflammatory are likely to be met with silence rather than a barrage of insults. Like every blog that's been around as long as we have, we have our regulars but don't let that deter you from jumping in. I've enjoyed reading the comments and posts of the new guys and just want to say keep up the good work.
First and foremost, we are Kansas City Chiefs fans here. Remember that and you'll be just fine.
If you're new and haven't commented, use this post to introduce yourself. Thanks for reading!

Chris
FYI – the link for the “these types of articles” doesn’t work, as in it’s not even a link.

Thanks
Fixed now.

Editor?
Where is he???
Chris Thorman - May 2, 2008
Primetime must have been in a contract year
Now he’s taking plays off.
Chris Thorman - May 2, 2008
i can just see him
running up to his computer, not seeing any easy comments/corrections to make, and turning his back to it, leaning into it, and falling down. (LJ, anyone?)

Whitlock's Ending Line Was Less About Racism
And more a dig at Will Leitsch for taking a rather stupid tack in his articles. I think Whitlock was more interested in instigating a better discussion regarding the role of the media than anything else…about all topics, not just racism.
UCrawford - May 2, 2008
I suppose
I was fine with the article until he slipped in that unnecessary clause about Leitch relating to racism.

Leitch Did Make Several Stupid Comments On Race In His Book
It was one of the problems that Bissinger had with bloggers (the often poor tack they take towards addressing subjects) and that Whitlock (who likes bloggers) had with Leitch in particular. They discussed his remarks in the NPR interview that Whitlock linked to, and after listening to the interview I’ve got to say that I think he’s got a point about Leitch.

In fairness to Whitlock, he also goes after black writers who make stupid comments about race (Scoop Jackson being his main nemesis). I think he just gets tired of people dumbing down the issue with bad jokes and outdated views…and I can’t say as I blame him because it frustrates me when I hear it too. That said, I do get kind of irritated when he goes off on the tangent for too long and it overwhelms his sports writing (which is what his job is supposed to be), but overall I’ve found most of his comments on racism to be pretty well thought out (if a bit silly when it comes to discussing rap music).

I see what you're saying
Thanks.

Bengals Fans
While I have to say that if the Ahmad Brooks thing is true, then it’s sad and unfortunate that the team is riddled with these character issues.
On another hand, the fans there seem to be pretty classy as well. I’m glad the community here seems to have a greater respect for each other. If I wanted to listen to people constantly calling each other “gay” then I’d go read the KC Star user comments.

RE
The cool part about the norms around here is that they just evolved like that.
I wasn’t banning people, deleting comments or telling people not to say stuff. I made the occasional comment about what I thought or made suggestions.
But the community has become a great place largely without me intervening. Pretty amazing.

Your Parents Were Right
...when they told you that the best way to deal with crappy people is usually just to ignore them. If you don’t engage the trolls, they run out of ammunition, they eventually get tired of running off at the mouth and they either start engaging in adult discussion or they go away. Unless, of course, you write something that might be perceived as negative about Ron Paul in which case the online crazies come teeming out of the woodwork like cockroaches and never leave. :)

Cover 2
One big detail that the MHR left out was the progressive reads that are required (with almost every defensive scheme though) Every player on the field, except the safties (they’re always suppose to be deeper than the deepest) has a progressive read much like QBs w/ their recievers. 1st read, 2nd read, 3rd read. Your corners are huge in a cover 2 (though i might just be bias w/ QBs and CBs).
Dustin SLO,CA - May 2, 2008
Probably...
because you don’t take your reads in man coverage. There is no way that a player can take a meaningful read(wr’s actually show what they are doing) without spending enough time looking that his own reciever is gone. He probably left it out because it doesn’t apply to man like it does to zone, and he didn’t really discuss anything about coverages anyways. Reads are something that every defense does anyways, just like a swim move or a juke i guess you could say. Well, probably not but i can’t think of anything else to say.
Ben S - May 2, 2008
This wasn't about Man to Man...
What are you talking about?!
Dustin SLO,CA - May 3, 2008
Hah sorry.
You can run man and zone with a cover two defense, and when you are in man the only thing you read after the snap is the qb for about a split second. I was saying that maybe the reason he left it out is that he was focusing more so on the cover two as opposed to different coverages and how they are played.
Ben S - May 3, 2008
By the way
I completely agree with you about LJ, even to the point about the flag planting hah
