Arrowhead Pride

Kansas City Chiefs Do The Unimaginable And Beat The Denver Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs got all the breaks in a game where they needed everything to go their way.  The Denver Broncos stepped into Arrowhead as 9.5 point favorites and walk away losers in a 33-19 Chiefs victory.

Stats are here

Highlights:

  • Larry Johnson continued his domination of the Broncos in a 28 carry, 198 yard, 2 touchdown performance that reminded us of the LJ of old.
  • Damon Huard defined the words journeyman in a 160 yard, 1 touchdown performance in which he completed 75% of his passes.  Impressive? Nah.  Good enough? Works for me!
  • The rookie corners, Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers, played a magnificent game in which each recovered a fumble.  Carr stole one of Cutler's passes while Flowers nearly did the same.  Carr, in particular, greatly minimized the impact of Brandon Marshall who is Cutler's biggest weapon.

Yes, there were holes on both sides of the ball.  This game isn't indicative of what we will play like every week.  But there's no time for that now.  We got our first win.  Tony Gonzalez is one yard away from the record.

I've never been so happy to say we are 1-3!  Go Chiefs!!

The rookie corners

…were extremely impressive. Also, DJ looked spectacular as well, a forced fumble and an int.

28 carries for 198 yards

What is that, like… 7 yards a carry?!?!

So many good things

Larry Johnson is back
Derrick Johnson has (I hope?) his breakout game
Brian Johnston, first sack!
Rookie corners play excellent against good passing offense… and with so much upside potential!
Novak was 3/4…. not too shabby! really should have made that one though.
DANTRELL SAVAGE!!!!

is so bad that...

I hope Sams is unavailable next week!!

NO ill will intended. but he should’ve been cut in the last roster cut down.
Savage is a true Special teams player.

Woo-hoo!

As one who has wanted to trade Larry Johnson, it’s BBQ crow tonight!
Last week he was improved. Today he was inspired.

I will not lie...

I got so very emotional in the final minutes I teared up a small amount (NOT CRYING)…and then realized it was a single win…and how pathetic it was…But it was just a very emotional, hard-fought battle…

- Rookie corners looked great…
-Pass-Blocking looked better…even without Albert (it IS Denver tho)
-I still had a problem with some play-calling in the end, when we ran on 3rd and 4 or whatever instead of PA to Tony…which would have gotten a TD AND the record…
- With that said, the play-calling on the TD drive before that was outstanding…the quick-fakes, the end-around fake…all were very very satisfying…
-DJ looked great….

oh my, i love the Chiefs…

We couldn't throw at the end..

if we threw a pick and denver went down to tie or win the game i would have killed herm myself. It sucks but we had to do it.

I think it was a different series...

…it was the one we ended up settling for a FG…is all…

I got emotional at the end

Not in a teary eyed way, but I couldn’t stop laughing. I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy during a Chiefs win.

Congrats to KC for the win. The KC Defense plays an exciting swarm style,

turnovers lead to victories, and the KC Defense did a great job of creating them. Thank goodness the Broncos don’t have to play in KC until next year.

Denver run defense

That’s the only reason we were in this game. When LJ gets going, the rest of the offense follows suit.

I still want Cutler, though.

I have no words.

That was quite a performance. If Bowe could have played against New England like he did today we would be 2-2. Not to mention the Raiders and Falcons are teams that we should be able to beat. It’s just one game, but I’m seeing some potential growing.

From 0-16 to 13-3

In the predictions category? (not meaning you necessarily, Scuba)

Not at all

The fact that we didn’t win those first 3 games says that we’re young and inconsistent. But I would say seeing their potential from this game changed my prediction from 1-15 to maybe 5-11.

It's not even that

It shows that we CAN look good. It’s promising.

That was more or less what I was saying.
Agreed

Just pointing out the roller coaster that is the 2008 season.

this feels amazing i teared up too..i cant even think of the words its been so long since i felt this and we chiefs fans we stuck it through all the way and were all in this to the end i’ve never been prouder to be a chiefs fan!!

GO CHIEFS!!

Actually, it was Carr that was matched up with Marshall

nearly every single play. He is like 3 inches taller than Flowers, making him the natural choice to guard the freakishly tall-and-athletic Marshall.

Honestly, I think Carr will be better than Flowers in another year or two. And that isn’t an indictment of Flowers as much of a statement as to how good Carr really will be. He showed me a helluva lot today.

And, breaks or not, I think it was obvious that, on this afternoon, we were the better team. Now, that isn’t to say that the Broncos wouldn’t beat us at least 7 or 8 times out of 10 given the chance, but we played better than them on both sides of the ball tonight. Particularly in (for the most part) shutting down their offense, which had run roughshod over their first three opponents.

Plus, Demorrio Williams and Dmitri Patterson played out of their minds, giving us some hope for an even stronger defensive unit. Honestly, if our D plays this well, we should win quite a few games. Obviously they won’t, we are way too young to be that consistently good (and one could certainly argue not talented enough, particularly in the LB unit), but I would venture to say that every time we play this well on D we will win, as long as it isn’t some team significantly better than us and on the road. Sure, it looks semi-flukey because of the 4 TOs, but we physically forced all of them, as we obviously go for the strip far more often than most teams. Plus, we were winning from start-to-finish (just about, at least), and like I said earlier, were clearly the better team TODAY.

Because, for today only, we looked like a halfway decent football team.

5-11 HERE WE COME!

Good call

Now I remember Flowers jacking Eddie Royal near the sidelines.

Yeah, they both had tremendous games.

Royal was virtually non-existent.

Huh?

Royal had over 100 yards receiving. That’s not non-existent…especially for a rookie playing his first game in Arrowhead.

None of those yards amounted to anything though.
All Yards Amount To Something

He was productive while the game was still in doubt. Those yards weren’t conceded to him…he worked for them and he was productive. Nonexistent is when you don’t break double digits in yardage.

Yeah, that was my bad.

Obviously, I was watching a completely different game than the actual game ;).

Sorry.

Still, I do believe that both corners played exceptionally well.

But again, my bad.

The Pass Defense Was Solid

The corners did a good job, but I think the Denver receivers were also pretty solid yesterday. Most of Denver’s problems came on errors by Cutler which the Chiefs did an excellent job of capitalizing on. Cutler got his yardage but he looked as bad as you’ll ever see a 300 yard passer look out there.

How many of those yards

came when we were up by two scores and playing prevent? I know I saw Royal grab a few passes when Cutler was 12-yarding us to death.

Do they have NFL football in India?

I hope Chris didn’t miss this!

No kidding

He won’t know what hit him!

Although

It’s like 3AM where he is. A nice surprise when he wakes up.

when he wakes up?

we all know that chris is out on a late night bender in india and still partying

After this victory maybe

I imagine Miss Arrowhead Pride will pull in the reins.

A "W"

wow…nice, offense, defense, and special teams are all stepped up! I will pick LJ as the player of the game. He makes Broncos D line exhausted…

Shannon Sharpe on the post game

Incomprehensible gibberish

I hate Shannon Sharpe

Just say, one time, that TG is the best.

I know, I wish he had gotten just two more yards on that last pass

to beat Sharpe’s record

He brought up that TG did not break his record

I think he called LJ “gran ma ma?”

Grandmama!

Wow

The PARADE has been challenged.

LOL, primetime

Good pic Pauli

he refuses

TG is the best of all time and he knows it

But

“Where he jewelry?”

I think that's his "thing"

What a waste of airtime

As an announcer

He doesn’t really bring anything to the table. Just annoying.

Ha

Yeah, the tool….he holds on to the yardage record by ONE for another week…

I didn't know that Denver had a run Defense

We need to start drafting lots of D-Linemen, KC has done a good job of using 1st day picks on the D-Line

Now about that O-line...
by the way

How about the hard hitting special teams?

They were great!

defense played like a Gunther defense and

Why the hell does Herm hate TG? jealousy?

Big Bear

I think Herm running down to the end zone to see if TG was okay

proves how much he cares about him.

I think it was a show for the fans.

ever since Herm came here, he has given TG the low end of the pool.

check the stats. herm arrives, Tony gets hemmed in

Right

Why do people still have to be negative when the team wins? Can’t you just let go of your hate for one afternoon?

why do you have to see hate everywhere?

It my observation that Herm Edwards doen’t fully appreciate TG.

is it only safe and PC to express a thought as long as it’s not right after a game?

quit crying.

Get over it

Tony G had his third biggest season of his career last year. Doesn’t sound like he’s unappreciated to me.

Herm goes out and checks on Tony G which I don’t believe he’s ever done for another player and all you can do is try to trash the guy by saying he was putting on a show.

Sounds to me like you’re the one with a problem.

you’re the one who’s crying about what I said.

I also said many positive things throughout here, yet you chose to focus on this.

back to you chion

Big Bear

I don't know where you're getting your info,

but to say that Herm hates TG and hems him in is an opinion that doesn’t appear to be backed up with fact.
TG’s numbers (off of yahoo fantasy football…sorry I can’t get it to line up well):
Season Team G Rec Yds Y/G Avg Lng YAC 1stD TD
2003 Kansas City 16 71 916 57.3 12.9 67 4.9 48 10
2004 Kansas City 16 102 1258 78.6 12.3 32 4.3 69 7
2005 Kansas City 16 78 905 56.6 11.6 39 4.1 45 2
2006 Kansas City 15 73 900 60.0 12.3 57 4.1 54 5
2007 Kansas City 16 99 1172 73.3 11.8 31 3.2 59 5

Doesn’t look to me like he’s had any noticeable drop w/ Herm. Last year was a pretty darn good year, and ‘06 almost mirrors ’05 except for a couple more TDs. Maybe I’m missing something…

You're missing

You’re missing the Herm disgust.

It colors everything brown, which is why i prefer the rose tinted glasses.

Yup

Pretty much agree with Hulk and DJ…I dislike Herm a lot but I haven’t seen anything to indicate that he hates Tony G out there. He’s getting the same plays as always, he’s just the victim of some really crappy QB play (which is mostly Herm’s fault for playing Thigpen so much). But Tony G isn’t getting screwed over any more than any other receiver out there.

That's right

you tell him!

What's wrong with you?

We all love Gonzales as much as you do. Don’t try to make him a martyr. He’s not complaining and you shouldn’t be either.

That's because Herm wants to run

TE blocking is more important to him than TE catching. No disrespect to Gonzales there on Herm’s part.

The Stats

Don’t agree with what you are saying Big Bear.

TG’s stats have stayed consistent before and during the Herm era. In fact, he had the 3rd best year of his career under the Herm era.

That's About Right

He had less yardage than Bowe last year, but that’s really to be expected from TEs anyway (even great ones) because they don’t have as many opportunities for big plays in open space as WRs do because they’re running more routes underneath coverage.

You guys are hilarious

I make what was originally supposed to be a throw away line and the herm apologists, instead of seeing everything else I wrote jumped on that line.

After that, I got annoyed and kept up because it’s utterly ridiculous that a bunch of supposed grownups cannot handle anything but sunshine on their one win day.

So yes, I fed the dogs, they started yapping at something stupid and kept coming back for scraps ignoring the steak that was already there.

I promise, I will never post anything here again that might upset the delicate sensitivities of whiners and apologists.

For anyone else who was able to see BS for what it was and just let it roll, good work.

Big Bear

Woo!

Manufactured drama!

you're completely out of line

so yes, if that means you will have to self-censor, whether you need to make yourself feel better about being proven wrong by calling the fact-checkers whiners and apologists, then go ahead, but please do proceed w/ the self-censorship if you’re not going to be ok w/ a rebuttal.

you’re absolutely right that your first 2 lines were positives, but the absurdity of the TG “hate” comment, and then saying that Herm hems him in, demands a counter if we’re going to continue to call ourselves educated Chiefs fans.

Gotta be able to dish it out AND take it, if you’re going to demand that others “let it roll”.

now let’s get back to football…nothing dumber than getting pissed off at someone via internet, i just don’t think you’ve been very adult yourself.

When you make an assertion

That’s cool but be ready to back up your claim.

Herm Apologists?

If you’ve bothered to read anything I’ve written then you’d known exactly how low my opinion of our head coach is. I just do the research to back my claims, I don’t pull them out of thin air like you did with the Herm hates Tony G comment.

Big boy rules out here…when you make an unsubstantiated claim and someone calls you on it, then either back it up with some actual evidence or man up and admit that you were wrong. Otherwise you’re just asking to be treated like a child.

Rookie Corners

Most impressive. I’m really liking Carr. Was it last week they were trying to exploit his experience or lack thereof and he held his own? After today’s performance his future looks bright. Johnston sack was exciting, as was DJ’s breakout game. I wish every game had this many high notes to give us inspiration for the future. Too bad it had to come at the expense of Albert getting injured : ^ (

I would tell Taylor AND Richardson to get ready. I’m pretty close to sticking a fork in McIntosh, sucker looks dunzo

Progress...

I dont want to get carried away with how much better we played…it was a Denver defense after all…I certainly dont think we will have a winning record…

However, it is important to not understate the mental side of a losing streak, how you constantly will panic and make mistakes…Page summed it up this week and said they were gonna just start playing and having fun….

I think the monkey is off our back…the pressure of a winless season is gone…now we can just play…and I am NOT saying we will be amazing…I am thinking we will play more consistent and maybe get a few more wins…

hopefully….GO CHIEFS

Who cares if it was Denver's D

Our offensive has been the problem, and now we are showing some progress. At least this builds a foundation next week for our offense

....

I am not saying that….

the point is/was that this is more important mentally than anything…

also the playcalling on that big TD drive was amazing…i loved it

Hasty/Carter 2.0?
Word

They look very solid so far.

Our locker room

NEEDED this win. I think I was more excited by the smiles and cheer on the sidelines in the final moments than anything. Great game! GO CHIEFS!

Now all we have to do

Is not get too cocky and overconfident

We are still 1-3

which is still a lot better than 4-0.

BUT

we know what it feels like to win again…there is far less pressure…I still think we will be inconsistent…but…yea…

Yep, there will be ups and downs.

I’m just glad the up came against my least favorite team!

awesome

This game was just awesome, Carr was fantastic so was flowers and how about Dimtri Patterson he was good too. I’d have to say the biggest surpise was the Right side of the offenseive line. Macintosh had his best game of the season and alot of the runs went to the right side, lets give them a little bit of props, oh and Herb taylor coming in for Albert did a fantastic job too

Agreed on McIntosh

He played a solid game on the right side, finally. I was really shocked at how much good blocking LJ was getting on the right side.

I think we saw too

why its a good thing they haven’t moved Herb Taylor to the right side. I still remember when Willie Roaf went down and all we had behind him was Jordon Black.

Who knows how this game would have gone if we hadn’t had a solid player backing Albert up when he got hurt.

Keeping A Better Tackle In Reserve

Is a terrible idea when the guy who’s starting is as bad as McIntosh has been. If they want to flip him back to the left side when Albert’s hurt that’s understandable, but Taylor should be getting the majority of reps on the right when Albert’s healthy.

But as we have seen

Its not that easy to just flip guys back and forth.

Taylor had been practicing LT all preseason and training camp. If they had then switched him to the right a game or two and Albert went down this game, you’re going to ask him to forget everything he’s practiced the last two weeks and go back over there.

It sounds like it shouldn’t be that big a deal but for an offensive tackle it is. You can’t keep flipping them back and forth. You’ll ruin the guy. Its a big part of the reason Jordan Black stunk. His first several years they moved him all over the line and he never got his technique down to the point that he was absolutely worthless.

Yea but,

Herb also played EVERY position on the o-line in college. I know that does NOT always translate to the pro’s, but it shows versatility, the ability to adapt to different situations.

What a great feeling

It’s been almost a year…wow a great feeling it is to watch a win. even sweeter against broncos. Larry was fantastic (liked the big smile on his face as he hugged herm after his last touchdown), defense more than came through, and huard was able to facilitate the game efficiently (shoulders above thigpen’s performance last week).

13-3: oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

actually

Herb Taylor is considered a Swing tackle where he can play both sides. there is an article about Damieon Macintosh at KCstar.com and it talks about how Herb Taylor is ready to go in at RT if needed. I guarantee if Macintosh would have gone down instead of Albert, Taylor still would have gone in

Yep I heard

Herm say earlier in the year that was Herb’s saving grace that he was a swing tackle.
