But...the
Raiders lost. That means the Broncos are AFC West champs. Which sucks (obviously).
This wasn't a pretty game for the Chiefs. It was another one of those ugly, low-scoring wins. KC's defense played well, especially
Justin Houston who racked up 1.5 sacks.
Wallace Gilberry had two big-time third down palys holding the Broncos (and then a personal foul later).
Brandon Carr ended the game with an interception.
Kyle Orton and
Tim Tebow were both largely ineffective. Orton was 15-of-29 for 180 yards.
Dexter McCluster had a 21-yard touchdown run and
Dwayne Bowe had 93 receiving yards before getting hurt.
I jotted some things down during the game. Only 18 of them because this was a pretty ugly game to watch.

This game starts off just like the rest of the Chiefs games -- without a touchdown. The Chiefs are the only team in the NFL not to score an opening possession touchdown this year. Yep, the only team not to.
Ryan Succop misses again. The Chiefs kicked had two kicks blocked last week, earned a $14 million contract extension this week and missed his first attempt on Sunday. That's the kind of season the Chiefs are having.
Kyle Orton's buddy goes down. Broncos offensive lineman
Chris Kuper left the game with an injury and NFL.com's Jeff Darlington noted of Kuper: "He was Kyle Orton's closest friend on the team during Orton's tenure in Denver." And that injury, by the way, is a
broken ankle. It's an ugly one:
Not many people are better than Dwayne Bowe along the sidelines. The guy is great at catching the ball and keeping his feet in bounds, dragging his toes, or whatever to make the catch. He caught a pass over
Champ Bailey near the sidelines that, at first glance, looked like a sure-fire incompletion. With a closer look you can tell Bowe secured the ball and kept his feet in bounds.
Matt Cassel is on the sidelines. He usually is but CBS cameras caught him talking to Orton on the sidelines. Cassel's around even if he's not playing.
Dexter McCluster stepping up on offense. Through the first quarter he racked up 60 yards rushing including a 21-yard touchdown run (which came after a 16-yard run). McCluster's been playing better in the second half of the season.
Dwayne Bowe is Orton's No. 1 receiver. Of course he is. Bowe has five catches for 74 yards through the first quarter. Orton has 84 total yards in the first quarter so Bowe's obviously his favorite receiver. (This is why what happens later in the game is so tough to swallow.)
Chiefs are using some 4-3 defense.
Amon Gordon came in as the extra lineman. They started out in some 4-3 and then moved back to the 3-4 later. Interesting tweak for this Broncos offense.
Kendrick Lewis is a playmaker. Not the best player, and makes mistakes, but he has a tendency to make huge plays and he did that on Sunday by stripping Tebow. Heads up move by Lewis.
Uh-oh, Dwayne Bowe is hurt. He has a sore neck and the press box is saying he may not return to the game. Bowe went down after catching a pass and was clearly in pain as he walked off the field.
Javier Arena makes a big mistake. He called for a fair catch on a
Britton Colquitt punt and muffed it, which allowed the Broncos to recover at the 20 yard line. This is a game-changing type of mistake by Arenas. Inexcusable.
Did Tamba Hali get away with a facemask? The refs didn't call it but Tebow was stating his case that Hali grabbed his facemask. The replays aren't totally clear but it looks like he has his hands on his facemask but not pulling it. Tough call there.
This game is...ugly. That's really the best way to describe it. Boring, even. The Broncos kept running (and running). The Chiefs offense was nearing unwatchable levels without Dwayne Bowe in the third quarter.
Von Miller is missing. He didn't play regularly in the second half. It wasn't injury related.
Javier Arenas is hurt And it came on a great play by Arenas. He dove to bat away a Tebow pass and quickly grabbed his leg. Terrific play at a crucial point late in the game.
Brandon Carr seals it for the Chiefs. Picking off a Tebow pass. The Chiefs win the game, 7-3. Ugly game but a win is a win.
2009-like momentum. The Chiefs dominated the Broncos at the end of the 2009 season (and
Jamaal Charles had a shot at the single game rushing record) and that momentum seemed to help them heading into 2010. Hopefully KC can use this game a lot like that one.
Do we really need to have a picture of the guys foot?
180 yards/15 comp = 12 yards a pop….S A W E E T
KCinIL - January 1, 2012
I think YPA are more important than YPC...
180 yards/29 attempts = approx. 6 YPA… Not so sweet.
Glad we finished the season with a win though!
Jshpttrsn - January 1, 2012
better than the 2YPA
Cassel was giving us
bonesjackson - January 2, 2012
That doesn't make sense
He attempted some deep balls that weren’t completed you can’t really go by that logic. 12 yard per completion for an ok game is pretty damn sweet
KCinIL - January 2, 2012
I saw Cooper hold up his foot right after the injury.. I gasped and knew it was ugly.
KCRowdy - January 1, 2012
Sorry.. Kuper
KCRowdy - January 1, 2012
I don't see this as ugly
Without all the main weapons it’s no shock our offense blows. The good news is our defense looks great and has for a while now sans the Jets game. When Berry comes back I expect a top notch D
Flowers24 - January 1, 2012
I blame Plinko more than the D in the Jets game
Not saying they did good, but that O stayed on the field for about 30 seconds a pop
NJChieffan16 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Depends on signing Carr to keep the D consistent.
KCRowdy - January 1, 2012
me neither we need another receiver and Baldwin and Breaston need to pushed hard . They wilted under man to man from the Broncos and without Charles and battle the running game was what I expected .
I would love to see that Orton play action fake and Charles in the backfield though
Willie Beamon - January 1, 2012
Say what you will about Orton, he sells a hell of a play fake.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
It's a thing of beauty
Just imagine it paired with Charles.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
Gotta thank McDaniels for that.
From Week 5, 2010:
http://views.washingtonpost.com/theleague/smarterstats/2010/10/nfl-week-5-preview.html
The reason the play-action was so good was because McDaniels was using a pulling-guard trick that forced defenses to read it as a run, even if they knew the Broncos weren’t going to run. And Orton sold it so well, too.
Orton still does the same repetitive motion after handing the ball off. Whether it’s run or pass, it’s the exact same motion. I think if he’s the best at anything, it’s the play fake. Few QBs sell it like he does.
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
Some clarification:
I mean you need to thank McDaniels for teaching Orton the correct mechanics of it. I went and watched some footage of Orton after this game from early-2009, and then pre-2009.
He was still suffering from an ankle injury suffered in 2008, so he wasn’t planting so hard, but Orton already looked quite different. And compared to today, it’s almost night and day. Kind of a shame he was drafted by the Bears instead of a real team…
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
No one doubts McDaniels knows what he's doing. But I'm still unwilling to have him on our sideline.
Hoodie would never have apprenticed him (i.e. wrote him a five-page “How to Coach” guide and quizzed him on it throughout 2008) as he did if there wasn’t coaching skill.
Problem is, we just dropped Todd Haley because he could make it work with players and coaches but couldn’t get along with Scott Pioli. Do we need another young, arrogant Turk telling KC Wolf how to work a crowd?
McD has skills but I’d like to see if he grows into himself or not, or if he’s just going to be Little Bill again.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
He'd only be a coordinator.
I don’t see where that other stuff would even be an issue.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I keep reading that Pioli views him as a "coach in waiting" while Crennel "takes the reins."
I’m hoping it’s just drivel, and that you’re right—he’d only be brought in to coach quarterbacks and call passing plays.
From what I read on Turf Show Times, he’s still figuring out how to use a running game around the goal line. (Of course, that wouldn’t be anything new around these parts).
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Even if he was a coach in waiting.
Presumably that would be at least three years or so down the line, giving him time to mature and/or giving them time to change their minds.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I'm having a hard time opening my mind on McDaniels, Tark. Got to admit it.
Mister “My Draft Board Had Less Than 100 Names On It” keeps rubbing me the wrong way. And he IS a hell of a coach, I know it. Look at what he did with Cassel, or what he continues to do with Brandon Lloyd.
I keep crossing my fingers hoping for Karl Dorrell from MIA, Chad O’Shea from NE, or Mike Sullivan from the NYG first.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Would hate him as GM/HC.
Have no problem with him as OC, especially with RAC calling the shots.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Or Pioli, in this case.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Him too.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
It's DeBerg-esque
beautiful
jmcgoblue - January 1, 2012
Orton
Chiefs should pass him by next season. He had a good first quarter and that was about it. Chiefs need a decent qb and stop retreading old qb’s/
trchief - January 1, 2012
So who decent do we trot in?
We’re not going to be able to snag RG3 or Luck…which draftable passers do we pick up, that could jump in and start at the NFL level in game 1, year 1?
Sign someone else? A poster from Louisiana keeps backing Flynn….other than that, who out there, as a veteran that we could bring in, is superior to Orton in arm strength or competence?
I don’t think he’s the answer, no, but he’s a legit quarterback and that’s something we haven’t had since Damon Huard got old in ’06.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Agree. I believe that Orton should be the answer "until" we find something better.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
And if Hell freezes over and Orton turns into a new Trent Green, hey--we're all winners.
Likely? No. But that’s why we’ve got Stanzi and will likely pick up another arm in the draft…always keep searching for our #1 guy behind center.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
go_saleaumua, what would we do if they let Orton go, don't get Bowe and
Carr resigned, hire Crennel and he keeps his buddy Muir? And, name Cassel the starter going into training camp? What a mess that would be?
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
Crennel I could 'deal' with, he actually ran the game the right way today.
Let the players play, no need for hitting the timeouts or for anything too crazy. So I’d be ambivelant there, I guess.
Muir as playcaller? No Carr, no Bowe….unless some rabbit-outta-the-hat action happened during the draft, I’d be furious/depressed/astounded. I can see us losing Bowe OR Carr, but not both—and hopefully not either. And if Muir stuck around to coach the line, I’d be allright with that. But as OC? Without our #1 wideout?
Sad thought.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Orton did amazing with this offense his first two games,
which is more than Cassel did in three years.
Keep him.
bossmanham - January 2, 2012
Orton didn't do crap....
…unless that end-zone interception counts. If given the choice between Cassel or Orton I would take Cassel every day of the week (and twice on Sunday).
For all Cassel’s issue (and yes I know he has many) he doesn’t give the ball to the other team very often…Orton on the other hand is an interception machine.
DivineGrace - January 2, 2012
If you want any sort of vertical passing game
you risk a few picks. If you are Matt Cassel and only throw screens, you only throw game-ending picks on game-winning drives at San Diego.
neiowakcfan - January 2, 2012
Baldwin seemed to have a lot of trouble getting separation
from the defenders. It looked to me like he only got open on one pass.
R8R H8R - January 2, 2012
Baldwin gets his separation vertically...not horizontally.
DivineGrace - January 2, 2012
I'm thrilled with today's results.
I hate the Raiders, so let the donks go 1 and done in the playoffs.
bossmanham - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Likewise
Best case scenario really. End the year on positive note. Lose a couple draft slots but at that 8-15 range, not really a ton of difference in value.
Plus raiders don’t make it in, AND Tebow gets into the playoffs which theoretically will saddle the donks with him as the starter for next year.
BigRoz - January 1, 2012
I enjoyed the game
I think Orton should be our starting QB for next season. He throws some very good and accurate passes….very unCassel like.
He spreads the ball around and can make his reads pretty fast.
McCluster looked like Charles on his TD run….making it to the outside by pure speed. I can’t wait for JC to get back and do that all the time.
Having Moeaki back will lift a huge burden off of the offense. More playcalling and more options.
The defense was killer. The contained Tebow all game and made them try and beat us by throwing it or running McGahee.
I cannot wait for Berry to get back….oh man I’m salivating over what our defense can look like….ahhh man!! Pure domination!
Overall great victory to end the season on a high note…
PS… Sign Crennel as HC!
Matt_Grbac - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Agreed -
On all points…
chiefsfan62 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Agreed
The Defense is what this team is about. Identitiy
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
enjoyed the game
Orton should not be on the Chiefs next year. Outside of the Chiefs first score, Orton did nothing. Chiefs did nothing but punt after the first quarter. Chiefs need someone who can put points on the board and Orton ain’t it.
trchief - January 1, 2012
Disagree. Orton has to be our answer until we find something better. Trade, get value
for Cassel whenever the opportunity comes up. It is still possible that for one reason or another, that Manning becomes available, and is healthy. Look at Flynn, he’s a FA. Look at trading up with St. Louis for RGIII or whatever. If Pioli is the GM that he is supposed to be, he should, and I hope is, be looking at all of these possibilities. He also needs to get a “top” level coach, not Crennel. If Clark and Pioli expect this to be a SB team, now is when they need to make their moves, plus FA and the draft.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
all of the possibilities :)
weighed without concern for sunk costs on past decisions.
We talk about CB’s with short memories, our GM has to be even better than that, to move the franchise forward
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
What do you mean Steve. I'm just not understanding your comment.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
CB's need to forget the last play and play the next one great
We don’t want Flowers worrying bout that PI Call last play when he has a chance to jump the route this play.
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
Pioli should look at all the possible players available to us
and select the one that will move the Chiefs forward
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
OK, thanks, I see. I love our corners. We just need another for backup and one
to play instead of Arenas when there’s a third big receiver or tight end. I sure like Arenas too but he does end up getting over matched sometimes.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
As much as I hate the Broncos, I will say that Fox deserves some serious credit
for being able to have any success at all with such a turd for a quarterback. How anyone could find a way to keep the Broncos in games with Tebow consistently is pretty remarkable.
As for next season, I think we’ll learn all we’ll need to know about Pioli based on how he handles this offseason. We have the core of what should be a damn good defense for some time, and with Berry back we’ll only be that much better. But there’s a lot we need to do with this offense, even in light of Charles and Moeaki coming back.
CraiginKC - January 1, 2012
Very True
Pioli needs to hit a home run on Staff. We have had 3 weeks to align our plans. They better be good.
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
Defense
needs on the D to me are ILB , NT and depth in the secondary
needs on the O are QB,RT,TE and RB depth
I would be happy to sse us resign Bowe,Carr and maybe Orton
trade cassel
if we enter next season with Orton ,cassel and stanzi
and fix the oline I would be ok with it ….
I just want some of the holes filled……………
Battle AXE - January 1, 2012
Also a C/G.
If Hudson’s at C, we’ll need a backup for him and a backup/replacement for Lilja. If Hudson’s at G, we could use another young guy as depth and two C’s because we wouldn’t have anyone.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
asamoah could fill in as Center if needed
maybe
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
weigmanns coming back yo
you heard it here first! he’ll be hiking balls with his nubs at age 60.
Lucasjr5 - January 2, 2012
Broncos won the surge in the trenches on most plays.
Not sure why Crennel went back to 3-4 after the 4-3 was actually holding at the point. Maybe not enough depth to run the 4 stouts. But it was demoralizing to see the Broncos getting 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 yards just running it straight ahead. And it wasn’t like there were huge holes. Just overpowering play.
KC tackles both hold up pretty well against ’tweener edge rushers.
Orton threw some nice passes. He also threw some not-great passes. Nevertheless, I see him as KC’s current #1 going into next season.
hmills110 - January 1, 2012
I think Gregg is done for
Every time I saw him he was making tackles on the wrong side of the line or whiffing entirely. I like him and respect his veteran experience and leadership, but I doubt he’s irreplaceable next year.
Ochophosphate - January 1, 2012
gregg
he might be a releif guy next season at best..
Battle AXE - January 1, 2012
Not only that but
He was getting dominated one-on-one, when that is happening to your nose tackle that’s how you get ran over in games.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
gregg
saw him and beltcher mis several takels…
Battle AXE - January 1, 2012
Been the case for Belcher all year and not much has changed
Its forgivable when your 330 pound Nose Tackle misses a tackle on a shifty running back, not so much for your ILB run stuffer week in and week out.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
there was a lot of over pursuit too
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012
There was alot of uncalled holding also
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012

First down play… That should have been a third three and out in a row. We would have regained great field position. I think the refs just let them play and not call many calls
ravenhawk - January 2, 2012
I don't think he and the wideouts/backs are always on the same page.
The pass to Dex Mex in the middle of the fourth—he throws to the flat but DMC turned around about three yards too late—shows errant timing.

Dammit, thanks for reminding me

Ochophosphate - January 1, 2012
If you don't make the playoffs.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
We have scored an opening drive TD?
The fact that other offenses like Jacksonville, Indy and Cleveland have scored opening drive TDs is an embarrassing fact that should lead to Muir’s firing
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
Muir
the opening drive td thing is not important to me
but the play calling and winning the game is
yes i know good play calling = TDs
Battle AXE - January 1, 2012
More that other teams with far inferior talent have been able to drive down the field.
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
some inferior teams won 2 games
the Chiefs for all their warts won 7
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
purely from an offensive standpoint
I mean what exactly has Cleveland got to work with. McCoy? Hillis? and Indy? Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky? Those two both average more points per game than us. I’d like to think Cassel, Bowe and Breaston is better than McCoy, Massaquoi, and Greg Little. Yet Cleveland average more points than us
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
All that matters is what is on the scoreboard at the end of the game
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
the Chiefs drove down the field on several opening drives.. they were just worthless in the red zone.
Texas Chief - January 1, 2012
Muir better be gone
Seriously. We need to clean some house in the coaching dept.
IMO the following guys need to hit the rd.
Offense;
Maurice Carthon
Richie Anderson
Bill Muir
Defense:
Anthony Pleasant
I would like to see some good solid coaches come in. Some good respectable guys that can really teach our young guys the way to play
I really like what Gibbs and Emmitt Thomas has done on defense. They should stay. One should be promoted to DC.
Matt_Grbac - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Add ST coach Hoffman to that list
Matt_Grbac - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Just curious
Why Pleasant?
Jackson’s had a pretty good year and Gordon has been a nice surprise, as well as the development of Bailey.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
Honestly
I just don’t think our defensive line is all that good. Two top draft picks at DE and a savvy veteran NT and they still can’t do anything.
Maybe he stays because he is a young coach but I need to see more from TJ and Dorsey…especially at their draft positions.
Matt_Grbac - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Fair enough
While I liked the signing, it’s entirely possible Gregg just didn’t have anything left this year. Dorsey, I just don’t know if he’ll ever be that great in a 3-4.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
I can agree
but want to see wha our new coach does… defense has gotten better as the season went
Battle AXE - January 1, 2012
But the talent really isn't there
Dorsey is better suited at a 4-3, Jackson is just solid, and Gregg might be “savvy” but he’s not that good of a player in his old age.
Draft position, snaft position, maybe they should show more themselves instead of switching out the coaches?
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
disagree
I like what I saw from the whole front 7 in general this year
stagdsp - January 1, 2012 via mobile
todays game plan on D
was for the D to stop the run and force tebow to throw it… and they did that to some extent the problem i saw on run defense was missed tackels by beltcher and gregg … yes Johnson missed a few and so did several others but more then not he make the play
Battle AXE - January 1, 2012
Should have been a shutout.
All things considered, they did a pretty damn good job. The Broncos, despite their limitations, have put up some points on teams at times.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Muir is fine
Just demote him back to O-line coach.
BigRoz - January 1, 2012

we can go back especially with this staff to what we were.
Now is that the best plan and it all depends on WHO the HC is going to be

Should Tebow ever be capable QB he is going to have to get much better.
Because the current version of him has been figured out.
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012
You mean he might have to complete over 50% of his passes?
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
He can not pick a defense apart to save his life
He had open WR’s and didn’t even attempt to throw to them. Get in his face and he is useless.
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012
And yet...
I’d take him over Cassel or Orton in a heartbeat.
Scott B. - January 1, 2012
Sure glad you're not our GM.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Me too
But at least Tebow has found a way to win some ball games this year. If Cassel or Orton “led” the Chiefs to any big wins…I guess I missed it.
I’m no big fan of Tebow…don’t get me wrong. But me personally? I’d trade Orton and Cassel for him. And even throw in a Palko for good measure.
At least he might make a good Fullback…if our team ever gets around to getting a good Quarterback.
Scott B. - January 1, 2012
I don't know how you missed the Packers game
But I suggest finding a replay of it, it was pretty damn good.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012

Understandable.
I just don’t get the Tebow (as a QB) love.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I don't either, really.
I was just yapping. Mostly from fear of our team deciding to roll with Cassel and/or Orton for another year or two.

Yep.
At least he knows his limitations. He knows those passes to wide open receivers were as likely to be intercepted as completed.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
The glaring point I saw from todays game?
Is the same one I’ve seen all year long.
Our Offense is a complete joke. From the play calling, to the line, to our running game (or lack of), to our QB (no matter which one we played). We suck.
We will not be any kind of “contender” unless these issues are addressed. And unfortunately, that’s actually quite a bit to address in one off-season.
Scott B. - January 1, 2012
Jamaal back next season upgrades the offense immensely
As does Moeaki with his blocking and pass catching skills, few more upgrades on the linen and at QB we’ll be in business.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
Charles and O-line upgrades alone would help a lot
Orton could be a decent stopgap while they continue developing Stanzi and/or someone else they pick up.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
Yes, having Charles back will help
But, I think we’ve seen what not having a #2 RB will do to a season.
Same with Moeaki.
And I’m sorry…but Cassel sucks. And Orton is only slightly better. Maybe?
Our line gets pushed around by almost everyone.
And the mistakes / penalties?
The play calling is…I can’t even begin to understand that one. Seriously.
Besides having Jamaal back, and having decent WR’s…I see our Offense as needing a complete overhaul.
Scott B. - January 1, 2012
And we can go out and find a #2, just like we did Thomas Jones who was serviceable last year spelling Jamaal
Orton is much better then Cassel, and in an average AFCW he could put us in playoff contention every year.
Which is why I said we need to find a few upgrades, Albert-Hudson-Asamoah are a great start and will be solid rocks on the line for years.
Mistakes/Penalties can be worked on, and play calling can be better with a new OC
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
If McCluster can keep playing like he did today
He could spell Charles. Then McClain, if he’s re-signed, could be the power guy.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
I'm fine with Battle as depth.
4 YPC from your #3 RB doesn’t suck, especially if our OL is as bad as everyone here says it is.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I'd be fine with that
Charles, McCluster, Battle and McClain.
I was kind of hoping we’d get a chance to see Draughn in action today just to get an idea of what he might be capable of.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
Our OL is good at run blocking for the most part
Pass protection was the real issue, particularly with our smaller players on the line getting overpowered.
He just has zero burst, which is why I don’t want him. The ZBS is predicated on RBs that can find holes and hit them hard, why Jamaal is perfect for it. Battle, not so much.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
I disagree about our run blocking
While it’s decent for the first 80 yards of the field, we really struggle close to the end zone. We need to get another guy who can provide push in there.
Which is why my dream offseason at this point involves drafting DeCastro in the first.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
Well no disagreement there
We’re just to small up front that’s the major thing
ChiefWarPaint - January 2, 2012
Very true
Replacing Weigs with Hudson will help. Hudson’s no powerhouse, but he DOES outweigh Weigs by 15 pounds. That’s pretty significant.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
We think it does.

averagegatsby - January 1, 2012

We’d probably be 0-16 trotting Palko out there with Breaston/Baldwin
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
The problem without Bowe isn't that he's irreplaceable.
It’s that the OC lost all confidence in the rest of the offense without him today. We need an OC that will take what he has and keep playing. That guy got hurt? Well, that sucks. NEXT!
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
None of the other receivers were able to get separation from the defenders.

A third max for Nnamdi and maybe a 6th for Miller? Still a couple opportunities at least to find something.

Much as we like laughing at the Raiders when they're down
As they do for us I’m sure, I think the rivalry’s more fun when both teams are good.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
I don't know if he's a good coach or not.
But that trade for Carson Palmer was stupid, and that was all on him, apparently.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Ya
We vary on that too. I’m actually liking it though. Palmer’s had some rough games, but when he’s on, he throws the kinds of passes Campbell can only dream of. He does definitely need to keep the picks down, but he did that today. Had a solid effort. And as for the draft picks, as I often remind people, our last First Round Pick QBs drafted were Marinovich and Russell.
Somebody from over here compared Campbell to Cassell, and I think that was more or less an honest comparison. It may well be that Campbell would have held us back, as many of you have said you thought Cassell was doing. But if Palmer, after a proper offseason and working with a guy he’s known since college, can find it, then we have ourselves a real QB. The kind we haven’t had since Gannon.
Which is partially why I’m here tonight. At this point, I’d rather listen to Chiefs fans bashing the Raiders (which you haven’t even done), then listen to the constant griping by certain Raider fans about Palmer.
rightnasty - January 1, 2012
Oh, I think getting Palmer was a good move.
I just think they way overpaid for him.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
See
The crux of the matter is, that Palmer is probably good for 3-4 years. If we can put together a good enough defense in that time, we could go all the way. If we do get there, then it’ll have been worth it. Plus, it’s a Raider tradition trading picks for players. We traded two #1s for Mike Haynes. A first and a second for Ted Hendricks.
Our problem is essentially the opposite of yours. You already have the D, and now just need a good enough QB to get you there.
rightnasty - January 1, 2012
Haynes and Hendricks were elite players.
I don’t think Palmer is an elite QB, but the Raiders gave up elite compensation for him.
To be fair, I ripped the Seymour trade too, and that’s turned out pretty well.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Perhaps
But neither was Gannon before he came to the Raiders or Plunkett. Also Hendricks got off to a rough start with the Raiders, and almost got cut. Al had to pull rank for them to keep him.
You know, mostly, I just tell them over there. The deal is done. The Bengals are not giving those picks back, even if some people don’t like the trade. So the only thing to do now is hope for the best, and see how this thing shakes out. Course some of them over there are completely unwilling to do that.
rightnasty - January 1, 2012
seems Chiefs faithfull forget Dawson
was a Bust too till he got a chance in KC
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
Opinions vary
I believe he’s entitled to as much time in as Cable had (and whom I couldn’t wait to get rid of). It’s been a particularly horrific year for injuries, the passing of Al, Chuck Bresnahan being foisted on us, and the GMship thrust onto Hue…it’s a lot to overcome. He ought to get at least one “normal” season before he’s really judged.
rightnasty - January 1, 2012
Yeah, I'm not a fan of firing someone after one year.
Unless you pretty much have to. Especially a year like this (don’t forget the lockout).
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Not what I meant.
I meant more like, “We had the money, we just didn’t want to give it to you.” But yeah, I’m sure Nnamdi didn’t mind.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Would like to think Al knew better than that
For the life of me, never understood the logic behind it.
rightnasty - January 1, 2012
I don't know.
I know he was supposed to a player’s owner, but the whole Marcus Allen fiasco proved that he could be vindictive to his own detriment.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Yes
He could be at times. He was a player’s owner in the sense that he would pay the players a fortune with no problem much of the time, but was skimpy with the coaches.
rightnasty - January 1, 2012
Exactly.
Hated to pay coaches, but loved to pay players.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012

But that was nothing compared to not wanting to pay Gruden, trading him to Tampa Bay, and then having them beat us in the Super Bowl.

Take out the 2-3 games where the defense said "F this" and we're a top 3 scoring defense.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
Best thing is.
Most of the core is still ascending, and they were playing without arguably their best player on that side of the ball. Another couple pieces, plus continued development of the young guys, and they could be dominant for years. Need to lock up Carr, though.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
And need an answer at NT.
I think they expect Siler to come in and raise the level of play at the other inside backer but you’re right about the other pieces. Houston has every indication of being a stud, Bailey will likely eventually make Dorsey expendable and our depth at CB is better then we think. Carr is a must signing and I hope after the display those two CBs put on today, Pioli sees that.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
I don't know how Siler will do that
He’s great at defending the run, but that’s about it. We’d need to take him out of Nickel Packages just like we do with Belcher…
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
The way we run sub packages we would probably pull out any ILB that we put in there unless Patrick Willis is available.
I think Siler raises the competition and if we believe him he was slated to be the starter this year. I’d like to see more depth brought in there but it’s not the huge concern that NT is or safety depth.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
Or we don't pull out the ILB, because he has coverage ability
Plus we pull the Nose tackle for Nickel packages as well.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012

ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
Had to be close on the Steelers, too.
joplin chiefs fan - January 1, 2012
I looked at them.
I think they had two other games with fewer points. Their offense wasn’t real good this year.
Oddly, the most impressive of the those four games was the one who scored the most points. Holding the Packers to 14 points was extremely impressive, if you take a look at their other scores over the course of the season. And 7 of those points came late.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I'm actually disappointed.
A great defensive effort, which we are starting to get used too, but our offense should not be this bad, injuries or not. I certainly don’t compare this win with the 2009 game. I don’t leave this game with near the same optimism I did with that win. I wanted to finally see some explosion on offense.
I don’t necessarily even blame the players that much. I don’t know why our playcalling is so damn conservative, especially in the redzone. I honestly think an OC, who is willing to trust the passing game, and utlize the weapons he has, will be almost as important than adding more players. Playcalling can make medicore offenses look good, by taking some pressure off of the O-line, and keeping the opposing defenses off balance. I don’t think we are as far off, talent wise, as many seem to believe. One more good draft, 3 or 4 good FA’s, to mainly add a little more depth, and this team can go places. They just need someone willing to let them do it! If you don’t trust your QB, or your offensive weapons, or are too obssesed with turnovers, then you end up with an offense called the Kansas City Chiefs!
Racyman - January 1, 2012
I'd take consolation that Muir will most likely be out during the off-season.
I think our biggest focus should be getting a good OC and a good O-Line. After those are fixed, everything else is gravy.
jhoward8780 - January 1, 2012
After Matt Flynns performance today I believe even more it should be Tom Clements.
It will never happen because it would mean going outside the family tree but he needs to be an OC somewhere and it might as well be here.

Needs for 2012-13 season
With our 1st pick we should draft OT Matt Kalil from USC, move Albert to RT or LG. So our OL for nest season would look like this: Kalil, Albert or Asamoah, Hudson, Lijia or Asamoah, Richardson or Albert.
BGayles1 - January 1, 2012
Please not another season with Brich at RT.
Please please god no. That ship has officially sailed.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
Albert was probably our second best OL this year.
Why do people keep wanting to move him?
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
So he can play his natural position
Whatever that is.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
Agreed
He did a great job today, AGAIN, against some very good rushers.
Our offensive line, first and foremost, needs more power on the interior. Even more than B-Rich needs replacing (I know, I know, but I swear I’m serious).
Replace Weigs with Hudson (who, while not very powerful, is 15 pounds heavier than Weigs), draft DeCastro, and our line (as well as our RZ offense) looks much, much better.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
Wiegs is gone so there goes that issue
A run blocking mauler of a RT would help us out so much, JC would appreciate having Asamoah and a good RT to run behind, and that helps us out in the power formations too
nateforchiefs - January 2, 2012
We already have a mauler at RT
We need a guy who can pass block a little too, without having to keep a back or TE on his side to help him every single passing down.
But yeah, I think we’re speaking the same language here.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
How in the hell are we gonna get Kalil from USC?
He would be the first pick taken in just about every other draft.
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012

Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
There's some crack being smoked here...
Kalil? At 11th/12th pick? Ummm…. NO. He’s not going to fall. Riley Reiff or David DeCastro. RT or G. Pick the other position in Free Agency.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
Or take DeCastro now and draft your RT in the 3rd or 4th round.
Take Ta’amu in the second to play NT. Line problems solved. Get the safety in free agency.
I do hope we resign Carr. Bowe… franchise him and let someone take a crack at him. Pick up one of the other stud WR’s in FA that doesn’t have a bad case of the dropsies.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
Line problems wouldn't be solved with Ta'amu
It would just make them worse ):
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
Especially when we have a young NT project in Powe
And there are multiple NT’s available in FA. Garay, Soliai, and Pouha would all be able to give us at least what Gregg has this year, and likely more as Gregg’s faded down the stretch. Crap, even Franklin (everyone’s DREAM last year) could be had for pretty cheap at this point.
With a young dude already here and proven vets available, I see no reason to waste a draft pick.

jmcgoblue - January 1, 2012
Plus
Kolb just signed a HUGE contract with Arizona, so that would have to be factored in.
rightnasty - January 1, 2012
Please Not Flynn !!
I have nothing against Matt Flynn. He have one career game, and people want to give him the farm. We seen what happen to Arizona with the Kevin Kolb. Too much to lose for a 1st time start.
Matt Cassel will be fine next year now that Haley is gone !!! Look Romeo and Charlie Weis are good friends. Weis wouldn’t have any problem creating the playbook with Jim Zorn or Josh McD.
Richardson to important to cut, just take a look at the injuries to Green Bay OL.
BGayles1 - January 1, 2012
Screw Flynn
I say go after free agent Peyton Manning.
Trade Bowe for a 1st & 3rd, sign Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon.
We’re set for 3-4 years
jmcgoblue - January 1, 2012
If Peyton's completely healthy
We wouldn’t need to change a thing at WR. If he can make it work with some of the guys he’s had in Indy over the years, he can make it work with Baldwin/Breaston/Copper/Urban/Horne/whoever.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
He could solve the OC problem too.
Since he’s done a good job as OC in Indy.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Honestly... I'd think about this long and hard.
Especially with a picks & players type of deal for him.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
Don't want to trade for him.
Wouldn’t mind getting him as a free agent, though.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
He won't be a free agent, Tark. You're smart enough to know that.
They’d have to try to trade him as part of the rebuilding project.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
It's not impossible.
The Colts will have to pay him a shit-load of money to keep him. It’s not a given they’ll do that with Andrew Luck coming on board. And any team trading for him would not only have to give up draft choices and/or talent, but they’d be on the hook for that huge contract and roster bonus too.
It’s not like I just thought of this on my own. A great many paid analysts have speculated that there’s a good chance he’ll be waived.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I'd be all for this if it happened.
But if it’s a free agency issue, I don’t think he’d come to KC. If he was being traded, it’s a different situation.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
Where in the league would he find a better situation?
A young, good defense. A stud RB. A decent WR corps. A talented young TE…
If we address offensive line a little I don’t see where he’d be a better fit.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
Tarkus is right
The Colts aren’t going to pay $28m just for the right to get a couple draft picks for him. They could sign 3 elite established players for that money.
jmcgoblue - January 1, 2012
I missed the rest of your message.

Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
I'd like to see Richardson at gaurd
Its valuable to have a guard who has the ability to slide over and play tackle in case of injury. Haley and Muir screwed the pooch with gaither. One of the many questionable personnel decisions that helped get Haley fired.
DenverDonkeyHater - January 1, 2012
Hmmm.... this is a radical idea that MIGHT have some merit.
Personally, I’d rather have him has a back up.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
What are U Smoking
This is the NFL not flag football. By adding Peyton Wayne or Garcon, the offensive would be to old and we would have to rebuild in three years. Can’t to that again !! Remember what happen when Herman took over !!!
BGayles1 - January 1, 2012
Chill, dude.
Adding Peyton would make us Super Bowl contenders right now and we can draft a project to groom to take over when he’s done. If we can add Peyton and a couple lineman to protect him, we’re a top tier AFC team immediately.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
IF he is healthy. He'd have to pass a serious physical before any deal would be agreed to.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
You mean
like the physical before he signed his new contract?
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Yeah, I'm not sure what happened there, but he bamboozled Indianapolis pretty good.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
I agree and think your right. If healthy, Payton could lead the Chief's talent to the SB.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
Garcon is 25 years old & has been as productive as Bowe this season
Adding one old player doesn’t make the team old. If he’s fully recovered I’d take Peyton in a heartbeat.
jmcgoblue - January 1, 2012
I don't think you "fully recover" from the type of operation he had.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I'll just go on pretending I didn't see this :)
jmcgoblue - January 1, 2012
He could be in a wheelchair and still be a better option then Cassel.
GenericBrand - January 2, 2012
Recall Joe Cool !!
We did this back in 1993 when we brought in Joe Cool from the 49ers, that when we had a defense back in the day. I’m sorry that too much to bank, What about how much it going to cost U $$$$, !! Are you aware of what its costing Indy right now? They can’t keep Wayne, Garcon, and Mathis !! Peyton will need 2 TE, who do we have for him ???
BGayles1 - January 1, 2012
Adding Mathis
I would like to see Mathis as DE. He would give us the pass rusher we been lacking sense Allen, Hicks, Smith, and the Late DT.
BGayles1 - January 1, 2012
Mathis is 6'2" 245
He’d get eaten alive as a DE in a 3-4.
For comparison:
Dorsey is 6’1" 297
Gilberry is 6’2" 268
Bailey is 6’3" 288
Jackson is 6’4" 296
bh13 - January 1, 2012
When he get's his chance, Bailey is looking good.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
I agree
He’s improved as the year went along.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
He'd be an OLB for us
Like Hali and Houston, I think he’d do a pretty good job at that too…
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
OC ?
If SD fire Norv Turner, I would rather Norv than Josh. Norv is a better OC the HC, and he does great job in developing young QB ( Cassel & Stanzi).
Mathis is better than all those guys. I just now starting to see life in Dorsey, Giberry and Bailey need more playing time, and Jackson is Jackson. Only 3 sacks in his career.
BGayles1 - January 1, 2012
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LadyChief - January 1, 2012
Funniest tweet Ive ever read.
GenericBrand - January 2, 2012
Not a wasted season
If someone said the Chiefs would finish the year 7-9 w/out Berry, Charles, Moeaki, and Cassel would you say they were crazy? I know I would. Heck a lot of people thought we’d be that w/ all those players healthy. The defense really came into their own this year and we might have found the right head coach. Yeah we have issues but I think we made progress this year. With line help, better QB play, and better play calling and we could be a contender. Was far from lost year! I say we have more promise then any team in the division going forward.
Brandt34 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Totally agree but....
how do we get better QB play? No first rounders are going to be on the board and I just can’t believe that Cassel is somehow going to get better at this point in his career. Orton is better but how much better is a big question mark and he’s not under contract.
DenverDonkeyHater - January 1, 2012
And this
Is why I’m glad I’m not the GM. There are a lot of options. They could keep Cassel, sign Flynn as competition, and draft one in round 2 or 3. Trade Cassel, sign Orton, and draft a QB. Orton won’t sign w us if Cassel is here. Try and package a deal w Bowe and others to the Rams or Colts for Luck or RG III and have Cassel keep the seat warm. What option do you all like?
Brandt34 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Hard to see a scenario where we end up with Luck or RG3
too much competition for really the only two NFL ready prospects. However with so many QBs taken last year it might be a good year to snag a bargain in the 3rd round or later. I’d like to see Orton take a 2 year contract, dump Casse,l and draft another project to compete with Stanzi.
DenverDonkeyHater - January 2, 2012
Who do you want to see gone next season?
I think I’ll be disappointed (for different reasons) if the following names are still on our roster next season: J
Jake O’Connell (we could use a much stronger complement to Moeaki)
Jerheme Urban (had a couple of bright moments, but…)
Jeremy Horne (was a project from the start, and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere)
Anthony Becht (seems like a nice guy, but shouldn’t have given the guy TG’s number)
Steve Maneri (again, nice guy, but a perfect example of lack of depth)
Tyler Palko (nuf said)
Barry Richardson (if he weren’t a free agent, I’d say hang on to him as a backup, but…)
Casey Wiegmann (I love the guy, but we need to upgrade)
Jovan Belcher (a nice story, and I wouldn’t mind his staying on the team, but he’s on the field more often than his talent should allow for)
Demorrio Williams (dropped off a lot this season)
Cory Greenwood
Sabby Piscitelli (the reason I hate the expression ‘the right 53’)
If we could upgrade on all dozen of these positions, we’d be a much better team. Of course, we probably need a better QB, but I don’t see that happening this off-season.
CraiginKC - January 1, 2012
No offense to anyone else but,
I want to see all of these players gone. Richardson can stay but only as a back up tackle.
kcgiant06 - January 2, 2012
I agree with the list
though some might make good depth on a better 2012 Chiefs team
Steve_Chiefs - January 2, 2012
I’d keep O’Connell, Horne, Maneri, Richardson, Belcher and Greenwood until a definite upgrade is found. Not like any of them are breaking the bank.
bh13 - January 2, 2012
I agree
with this. We should especially keep richardson for backup, Belcher for depth, and Greenwood for special teams.
andrew33 - January 2, 2012
This
GReenwood is a really good ST’er. Its not often you find a 240lbs LB with 190Lbs CB speed.
