Like the 2009 season the Kansas City Chiefs have ended the season on a high note by beating the Denver Broncos and potentially knocking them out of the playoffs. KC completed the game, 7-3. Low scoring, ugly, defensive, whatever you want to call it. They got it done.
The game ended on a Brandon Carr interception. Carr is scheduled to be a free agent this year and most fans want him back so it was a fitting end to the season.
The Chiefs had two sacks on the day and played good defense, only giving up three points. The Broncos did as expected offensively and ran. A lot. Tim Tebow only completed five passes. Willie McGahee had 147 yards but needed 28 carries to do it. The Chiefs offense seemed to be decent moving the ball at times but they were too often ineffective. Only scoring seven points in an NFL game won't win very often.
Kyle Orton finished the game 15-of-29 for 180 yards and played average at best. Dwayne Bowe had a big first half before leaving with a neck injury. (No updates on him.) Dexter McCluster and Thomas Jones combined for 27 carries.
That's it -- 7-9 for the year. Funny to think about but that was my preseason prediction considering the hard schedule. Things didn't go as expected this year (not even close) but the end result sounds about right, surprisingly.
So the playoff scenarios in the AFC West are now easy. If the Oakland Raiders win this afternoon, they're in. If they don't, Denver's in.

Never thought I would say this...but go Raiders!
I don’t want Tebow in the playoffs.

Raiders just lost...
Get ready for Tippy Toes Tebow and the Denver Donkeys to go 1 and out in the playoffs. Can’t think of a worse team to make the playoffs than this one.

That wasn't great defense.
That was a battle of ineptitude, especially at the QB position for both teams.

As much as I hate thw Raiders...
Today’s win is more satisfying if it knocks the Broncos out of the playoffs . Though watching them get manhandled would be nice too.

I'd rather see the Broncos in the playoffs.
I know the Broncos will lose their first playoff game against PITT. Oakland, although they probably would’ve lost, still have a real QB. They would have a better chance to win, and I’d rather not see an AFC West team win a playoff game unless its us.

Just as I expected going into this week
The Broncos would lose but back into the playoffs with an Oakland loss.

This season should be considered some kind of very weird success
Brutal schedule, losing 4 of our best 7 players, losing starting QB and HC, and we somehow finish 7-9 and beat the only unbeaten team? I’ll take it I guess.
Next season though, my expectations are extremely high, schedule will be better, injuries should be healed, and Houston/Bailey/Bawldin should be ready to dominate.

ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012

Just not super excited for 2012.
Muir is still the OC now. He could very well be next season. I’m not banking on him being gone until he is
RememberDelaney37 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Why Not?
I mean he's done such a great job this year, we'd love to keep his services I'm sureNah, I expect Zorn to be promoted if anything.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
Why would any offensive coach on this team currently make you feel good about their promotions?
And Zorn? Seriously? The same Zorn that had Cassel regressed to sub-Blaine Gabbert status? Why in the world would that be a good thing for him to be promoted to OC???
RememberDelaney37 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
It doesn't make me feel good, but that's probably what will happen with a Crennel hiring
He named Zorn as one of the guys who gameplanned for the Packers win. He doesn’t call the play though, Muir does and Muir has shown to be shitty.
As for Cassel regression, I chalk that up to line play and a lack of JC, plus Cassel lacks talent and has always been a back-up masquerading as a starter. He had a “solid” season last year stat-wise, but wasn’t really any good if you actually watched games. He still had issues, compounded by the fact that we had no run game and horrible pass protection you get a bad one out of Cassel.
Again don’t think its the best ever thing in the world, but most likely to happen. Anything would be better then seeing Muir calling plays again anyways.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
I'm ok with Romeo
as long as we get a new OC.
Orton is better then Cassel, and Cassel was going to be our starter next year
So we draft 12 vs 8…if there is a player we really want, we’ll trade up 4 spots.
Players are coming back easier then in the past, but even if you are correct…JC and Berry will still be better then TJ and JM/SP/RL
AZDiamond75 - January 1, 2012
Very true
A 70% Berry/JC are better than any other RB or safety we ran out there this season. But still, I just think too many people are expecting them to come right back in 2012 in top form of 2010. Don’t think its going to happen that way. They may not be able to help improve this team much next season.
RememberDelaney37 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
The thing they had going for them....
Is that their injuries happened at the beginning of the season. Will they be 100%? No…..but I think they have a good shot at coming out of the gates in pretty good form.
Zimmy - January 1, 2012
Good point
I’m obviously hoping for the best from them, and the time frame of their recovery before the beginning of the season might make a huge difference for 2012. No doubt we need them back at 100% asap
RememberDelaney37 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
I think we were
actually a better team talent wise in 2010 then 2011. Houston, Baldwin, Hudson, Bailey are guys we can build on. Our playmakers on both sides of the ball will be a lot better when we fix our OL and DL, which just got blown off the ball all year.

7-9 is pretty good considering the crap we went through this year.
There’s a lot of work to be done in the off season and I don’t expect it all to be completed by the time next season rolls around. We definitely need to get rid of Muir as OC and find somebody who’s halfway competent at the job. The next is to find an O-line. We really do need a new QB, but I don’t see that getting addressed this year, with our draft position and all the other things we need. Finally, we need another pass rusher opposite Tamba.
All that being said, I have some optimism for RAC as HC. The players are obviously behind him and so far he’s 2-1 in his stint (assuming that the interim tag is dropped). We just need a shake-up in the coaching staff.

Positional value was my problem with T Jax pick
3-4 DE not worth the value. NT a better pick there
bonesjackson - January 1, 2012
I disagree.
I think all line positions are first round worthy.
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012
but not top 5 worthy
G,C, RT and 3-4 DEs are not worth a top 5 pick
bonesjackson - January 1, 2012
Again I disagree
Tyson Jackson was the prototypical 3-4 DE coming out of Kansas City, just because he hasn’t been as good as he should have been, doesn’t necessarily make it a bad pick.
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012
I look at it like this...
If you have an offensive line that can keep a QB off his back, and a 3-4 DL that can allow LB’s to run free then you can plug those other spots in with average guys and they can excel.
I agree that there is a different priority on those positions, but I don’t think taking OL or DL in the first round is bad… Especially if you think they will be worth it… Ideally KC would have traded down and still have taken Tyson
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012

LHO - January 1, 2012
No
I’m sick of trying to make something out of career backups. We need to resign Orton to a short contract and have him compete with Cassel next year. Whoever loses the competion is traded for whatever we can get. Stanzi should be backup and get some reps in practice and preseason and if our starter goes down. After next year (or this year if we get lucky) take a REAL Qb in the draft.
I have enough faith in whoever wins between Orton and Cassel to make us somewhat respectable next year that I am ok with either as our QB for a little while.

1. I have never been a fan of the saying “backing into the playoffs”, but if there was a case to be made for it is the 2011 Denver Broncos. Not a single impressive victory and losing 3 straight games to finish the season.
2. Bowe is clearly a huge part of the offense. Pay the man!
3. What if…..Damn Raider game
4. I am excited about next season. As long as our guys come back at least 95% of what they were, we are adding 2 first round quality players and a 2-3 round player. We are only a solid QB away from being a real SB contender.

5280ChiefsFan - January 1, 2012
Its just a question to guage who the fanbase would rather have.
If I had to pick, I take Carr
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012
Carr
LadyChief - January 1, 2012
Why the hypothetical?
KCRiseFromTheAshes - January 1, 2012
why not
averagegatsby - January 1, 2012
Both!
JrRaven - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Carr
But either way you have to replace a first round talent if one of them leaves.
radyman - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Carr.
But I’d suspect we sign both.
ArrowSpread - January 1, 2012
I checked the back of the book
the answer is C) All of the above
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
carr
but the way its set up…bowe gets tagged
carr has to be signed long term in the next couple weeks
SDChief - January 1, 2012
Carr
I think we are pretty good at WR and really short on depth at CB. We are somewhat spoiled as fans by watching two great corners go at it every week. We were very lucky they were both healthy this year or it would have been much worse.
I know it sounds crazy but I think Bowe is more easily replaced. (maybe with Lloyd and McD?)
Bonofied - January 2, 2012
What names are out there for OC?
Todd Haley? Just kidding, but the rumors in Texas are that the Cowgirls want Haley as there OC next year.
RGCChief - January 1, 2012
Tony Sparano?
And have his DC Nolan come over as well…
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
I wouldn't wish that on Romo.
Fozzyboyd - January 1, 2012
They are more than welcome to him.
May he and Jerry Jones cuss at each other in the middle of a game for many a year.
jhoward8780 - January 1, 2012
How appropriate that would be.
Have him going back to be OC for a HC who wants to be involved in the offense.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
I love that defense in the final minutes.
I’ve saying it all year and the Chiefs listened*. Sit back and Tebow will tear you apart; play tough, and Tebow won’t be able to do anything. The Chiefs were perfect.
* Not really
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
Good enough to win, anyway....
I think the play calling from Crennel got real conservative in the last couple of posessions.
KCRiseFromTheAshes - January 1, 2012
I hate conservatism in sports. The offensive playcalling was horrible.
But, defensively, it was a clinic. As someone that enjoys the strategy of the NFL over the big hits, etc., it was a joy to watch.
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
Crennel?
You think the defensive play calling got conservative?
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Offensive playcalling tends to be conservative
(without a Brady or Rodgers) when you are starting from your own three yard line.
neiowakcfan - January 2, 2012
Held em to 3
Must have done something right.
ArrowSpread - January 1, 2012
Zorn?
RGCChief - January 1, 2012
Another sucky NFL Rule - now you can't touch a QB's legs?
electriclight - January 1, 2012
Thank Bernard Pollard for that
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
Agreed.
Tebow pulled a serious soccer flop.
radyman - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Chiefs had a hand in creating that rule when they played the Patriots in '08.
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
Horrible call by the official....
guess they felt America wanted to watch some Tebow “magic”…..we saw it!
KCRiseFromTheAshes - January 1, 2012
nice win.
more wins on the road than at home, though. gotta fix that. if we have anything, its supposed to be a strong home field advantage.
be cee - January 1, 2012
I'll bet Carr has a contract by tuesday.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
you confident on that?
SDChief - January 1, 2012
After today he better.
And if he doesn’t before he’s UFA then Pioli needs to be fired.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
have to agree. i keep trying to tell myself that he has to see what so many see...the same way he did on the lilja signing,
then paying hali, flowers, dj, charles etc
SDChief - January 1, 2012
After today?
I hope Pioli doesn’t negotiate based on one game.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Banned from MHR
All I said was good luck with that (playoffs)
bonesjackson - January 1, 2012
A bit touchy over there, huh?
radyman - January 1, 2012 via mobile
I guess....
Clinch a playoff spot and get all cry babyish….Tebow was arguing with the refs.
bonesjackson - January 1, 2012
Heh.
I read that as douchy at first. :)
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Looks like your post was deleted, what did you say?
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
Playoffs??
Good luck with that

And I mentioned Chiefs get 2 extra first round picks with Berry and Charles coming back

GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
I didnt have a chance to put that on there

Can see how they'd receieve that badly. They are too sensitive, though.
Colorado fans, in general, are pretty polar.
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
I know I lived in Colorado Springs for 7 years before coming to Germany
I put up with their BS daily…I was trying to make it to next week. So I could say something worth getting banned for :D
bonesjackson - January 1, 2012
Why is this not green yet?
jhoward8780 - January 1, 2012
I greened it
NJChieffan16 - January 1, 2012
LMAO
Truth hurts I guess -
Classic Broncos mentality..
chiefsfan62 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
best way to end this game was on a play by carr, a pick....awesome. pay him please. or all many will fear the 1 tag, 2 players scenario
SDChief - January 1, 2012
Gotta lock up our entire defense, although I still feel like our DL needs some work.
5280ChiefsFan - January 1, 2012
yes, yes it does.
SDChief - January 1, 2012
this game was a good reminder to Pioli to pay both Carr and Bowe
Bowe dominated Champ Bailey and we accomplished nothing without him on offense.
nickpapagiorgio - January 1, 2012
thats a good point
SDChief - January 1, 2012
Finally
electriclight - January 1, 2012
I don't know
I was perfectly content with the way this game played out. How some people can say we suck on both sides of the ball is madness to me. The second half of the season (with one exception being the Jets) the defense was fantastic.
And I agree with those who posted upthread that this team looked a lot different without Bowe on the field. But besides Dex we also had no serviceable running back either. Just like the Bears game, that’s the offense that was needed to close out the game. It’s not pretty, it’s not supposed to be. It chews clock and wins the game when the Broncos showed no signs they would be able to score.
Clear needs on the OL and TE positions and our offense immediately improves leaps and bounds with Charles back.
I’ll take 7-9 when most here were trying to find ONE win at 0-3.
Steve_in_RI - January 1, 2012
Yeah, I remember that.
electriclight - January 1, 2012
Sucks that one block last week
and we are the ones in the playoffs
bonesjackson - January 1, 2012
As they say in one of my favorite movies
“Without the bitter baby, the sweet isn’t as sweet”. Someday it will be all worth it when the Chiefs hoist the Lombardi again.
Steve_in_RI - January 1, 2012
Offense going all out in the first half while Bowe is in game
Bowe is injured and we fall apart on Offense. Doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together and realize losing Bowe will be disastrous for this Offense
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
I think that was more the conservative play calling than Bowe....
Seemed like Crennel was channeling “Marty Ball” there at the end, but hey….a WIN is a WIN!!
KCRiseFromTheAshes - January 1, 2012
Yep, several runs up the gut for 3 and outs
Its like we mailed it in offensively by the 2nd quarter.
And the announcers were giving us props for it which I found very weird.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
why do you think they went conservative
little faith that they could get it done passing without Bowe. I mean they couldn’t possibly think Thomas Jones sweeps will work
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
They went conservative....
because Romeo trusts our defense a hell of a lot more than our offense…..and who can blame him?
KCRiseFromTheAshes - January 1, 2012
it was conservative in the second half, but the chiefs had bad field positiion for most of the second have and
no bowe to go with it
niageriannit1 - January 1, 2012
Have to agree.
Whether Bowe had an effect on the playcalling is debatable, but it had more to do with the offense than Bowe’s absence did.
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
Broncos defense keyed on stopping the run after Bowe was hurt.
The OC just didn’t adjust at all.
rocko1 - January 1, 2012
Still not sure why Carr is getting a lot of love for this game
multiple times he was caught out and luckily for him Tebow was the QB and couldn’t hit the wide side of a barn or find an open Eric Decker
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
Pretty sure Carr has been good most of the season.....
NJChieffan16 - January 1, 2012
I'm talking about this game only and how people are saying this game sealed it for his contract
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
ah well, I think he did well covering
but considering Tebow completed 8 passes this season against us, its good it was Tebow
NJChieffan16 - January 1, 2012
thats not what people are saying
people are saying what a way to seal up the season, and send a message
and honestly, your case about him being lost is tied to tebow’s Terrible throws
SDChief - January 1, 2012
I imagine he played differently
knowing that Tebow was there. He was probably keeping more of an eye on the run, knowing that he didn’t have to respect the pass much.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Orton average at best?
Thought Orton played well. No turnovers and ran the game plan well. Not his fault the OC called the game on his heals or that Bowe was injured. I’m sure KO would’ve loved to air it out! Why no deep passes?
rocko1 - January 1, 2012
I agree 100%....
Orton managed the game pretty darn well, was at least moving it in the 1st half, something we haven’t seen too much of with Cassel.
KCRiseFromTheAshes - January 1, 2012
id like to see him with timing down w/ recievers
SDChief - January 1, 2012
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
KCRiseFromTheAshes - January 1, 2012
Red zone play
I’d like to see his decision making improve in the red zone, first and foremost. Unfortunately, that had always been his biggest negative, and I don’t see that changing.
RememberDelaney37 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
a lot of that is timing though. you cant hit a fade route with consistency without it, and thats possibly why we never saw it called
SDChief - January 1, 2012
Getting Bradon Lloyd will fix that.
Tempestuous Binary - January 1, 2012
Once McHoodie is the OC/AHC
bonesjackson - January 1, 2012
I agree
but I’ll take that problem over the 15 that Cassel has or the 99 problems Palko has.
Bonofied - January 2, 2012

trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012

SDChief - January 1, 2012
Hugh Jackson is
trentchiefsfan - January 1, 2012
Oh yeah, he's ripping the Ray-duhz something fierce.
I’m kinda surprised by that. Never heard that before when Al was alive.
jhoward8780 - January 1, 2012
He's probably pissed
that he looks like a jackass for bragging on the Raiders and predicting how great they were going to do this year. He’s like Rex Ryan without the humor.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Tebow throws 200 passes for pre game warm-ups!!!
Hilarious
electriclight - January 1, 2012
Someone should tell them that flea flickers don't count.
jhoward8780 - January 1, 2012
One thing I noticed.
Teams seem to score a lot more in the red zone when they have a good tight end. Pope and becht need to go. Since Tony was hurt the whole season, I think that lead to some of our problems. 7-9 to me with all the injuries is really not that bad and gives me hope for next year.
Orton’s arm will open up more running lanes for Jamaal. I just hope he comes back at full strength.
Navychief - January 1, 2012
Yet another reason
to consider trading down in the first round to take Dwayne Allen, TE from Clemson. He & Moeaki would be a great tandem.
MattL - January 1, 2012
i kind of hope somehow WR mcnutt from iowa makes it to kc to complete team iowa, with stanzi to mcnutt and moeaki
ah well
SDChief - January 1, 2012
need to be Serious consideration to taking a TE in the first 2-3 rds...this team loves 2 tight sets anyway
SDChief - January 1, 2012
Man I agree.
Look at all the quarterbacks that made the playoffs. Tom, Drew and Alex Smith all had go to TE. There is something to be said about a backup QB but that also could be said for TE’s.
Navychief - January 1, 2012
Orton worked very well with Olsen and Clark in Chicago!
Had absolutely nothing to work with in Denver. Play action and throwing to the TE works extremely well inside the 10 yard line.
rocko1 - January 1, 2012
Making A Statement For 2012-13
Just two months ago when we lost to both Denver & Miami in Arrowhead, I though that Romeo was done as DC. The problem with this season was Todd Haley and his playcalling. What I learned during the month of December is that, this team LOVE PLAYING FOR Romeo, and I was wrong about saying that the game done pass Romeo by. The head man for our Chiefs should be either Jeff Fisher or Romeo. We can’t go wrong with either one running this team. I do have some concern about next year OC !! The word out on the street is, if Romeo gets the job then Josh McD. will be hired as the OC, and that scares me.
If this defense plays like next year and with Cassel, Charles & Moeaki coming back for the offense, we should be able to regain the AFC West title back with some key addition: veteran backup QB( Orton), OL, DL, RB
Great Game!!!
BGayles1 - January 1, 2012
orton will be the starter over cassel next year if we resign orton
don’t want mchoodie any were near one arrowhead drive
niageriannit1 - January 1, 2012
I have no problem with McD as OC
outside of this year he has been in charge of AAA offenses in this league, including record breaking ones. He has worked with Cassel and Orton, getting the most out of each. We have the pieces on offense in place that he will need and a HC/GM he respects and I’m guessing will listen to. He also presumably brings another all-pro level WR with him.
Sign me up.
