The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos on Sunday but Tim Tebow and Co. are still AFC West champs. The Oakland Raiders lost to the San Diego Chargers which means the Broncos win the division. They used the third tiebreaker -- common opponents -- to determine the division winner.
This is an odd feeling. The Chiefs just beat the Broncos an hour ago yet Denver is now celebrating a division title. (That's what you get for counting on Oakland.)
I found myself wanting the Broncos to miss the playoffs so I'm disappointed by the result of the season. The Chiefs are, officially, a last place team (which is nice for scheduling purposes next year). But it's still a depressing result.
1. Denver Broncos (8-8)
2. San Diego Chargers (8-8)
3. Oakland Raiders (8-8)
4. Kansas City Chiefs (7-9)

what a shitshow of a division we were this year
rdub - January 1, 2012
you would think being in last place with only a 7-9 record would indicate a good division
nope
dudeustupid - January 1, 2012
Medicore.
Neither good nor bad.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
Well I predicted we would go 7-9 this season...
Though I thought that we would be good enough for 2nd… though Denver would be in last place, and San Diego just behind us.
Only thing I got right was the record…
ravenhawk - January 1, 2012
I thought at the beginning of this year that 9-7 would win the division
turns out 8-8 would’ve been enough for us.
Sudden - January 1, 2012
Ill take it
Better schedule and draft, some may call it a losers mentality but this is fitting
Supersexy - January 1, 2012 via mobile
most people were saying
Before the season we would be lucky to be 7-9 or 8-8. And that was before we lost 4 major starters. So I would say 7-9 could be considered a decent season considering everything that happened this year
banshee_01 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
agree
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
And also
Despite everything, we’re two blocked FG’s from being the division winner…
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
not to mention one questionably blocked FG
KC Nate - January 2, 2012
Ugh
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
I fully agree with you...
For all the obstacles that they had to hurdle to get to 7-9… they have a long ways to go though.

HughSchloobie - January 1, 2012
Agreed, think about how far we've come in a few years
To be able to sustain this many injuries to key starters and not go 2-14 or 4-12.
Wait and See - January 1, 2012
Now the Broncs can lose 4 in a row
they won’t hold up to a playoff caliber team.
Chiefs4Life - January 1, 2012
Playing Pittsburgh will be be a laugh all the way
35-0 Pitt?
super8 - January 1, 2012
Pitt on the road....
5-3 and 2 of the wins were in KC by 3 and in Indy by 4.
Pitt is NOT a good road team, and with Big Ben hobbled, I’m taking Denver plus the points for sure!

It’s a really good match-up for them.
MountainManMike - January 1, 2012
At this point, I'm glad we're last place
Higher draft pick and schedule. Next year, this division is going to be really close between us, Chargers and Raiders. Any slight advantage could decide things, and our schedule may be the deciding factor.
super8 - January 1, 2012
What a depressing victory...
Nathan4288 - January 1, 2012
hey, on the BRIGHT side ... we pick AHEAD of those three teams in the draft ;-)
so …
Romeo as HC
Wouldn’t mind Norv at OC
Need to re-sign Carr … like yesterday
Re-sign Bowe as well
David DeCastro first round choice, please and thank you
Jamaal, TonyM and Urc Burry ALL need to come back healthy and strong
Dear Oakland: we did OUR part, but once again you blew it! Don’t blame us …
Matt Stafford … how close is he to “Elite” status? damned near there in my book
Dear Eli: please do your very best Peyton impersonation and ring up 49 on the Cowgirls
Final Four: Packers, Saints, Lions, Ravens, Pats, Steelers … what? that’s six? right!
upamtn - January 1, 2012
I agree on DeCastro as 1st Round pick...
as long as the three big-name OT are gone. DeCastro, based on his play this year, looks to be an absolute stud at guard. A DeCastro, Hudson, Asamoah interior should be solid for the next ten years.
Now to figure out the OT…..
MattL - January 1, 2012
Id imagine a decent tackle will hit free agency
During the offseason. Otherwise there is always Mins :)
Scaryclouds - January 1, 2012 via mobile
Arenas too, depending how serious his injury was today.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
Looking at the interior...
We will be getting bigger on the line if Hudson takes over at Center. Add in Decastro, or Nicks… and we have some beef that can push for the first down.
I want to beef up the center of our line, and get an athletic Tackle… not necessarily big.

Buffalo is better than you think.
Let’s not forget KC went 0-4 against the AFC East, and they weren’t even close… and even during the Bills seven game losing streak, they were putting up points.

You don't know how good I think they are ;)
What matters is relative strength and I definitely think full-strength, not coming off the “take-it-slow” preseason approach, we can beat them.

KC Nate - January 2, 2012
I believe that there is an alternating 4 year rule...
with the AFC and NFC south. I’ll have to double check this thing that I was reading from a few weeks ago as it might just be the AFC.
It was kinda strange.
ravenhawk - January 2, 2012
If we had made 1 of those 2 blocked field goals last week, we'd be in the playoffs.
We didn’t even get to knock out Denver, so it really would have just been better for us to lose and secure top 10 in the draft. Now we’ll be top 15.
Hopefully the win will bring some momentum going into the offseason. Keep Romeo as coach and bring in a competent OC with a new QB. Orton isn’t the answer.
Vince D - January 1, 2012

Wouldn't have gotten Top 10 pick
We were 11 before this week. The two teams we were tied with that we could have jumped (Buffalo, Carolina) both lost, so likely, we would have stayed at 11. Now we are likely the #13 pick. I’ll get over it.
UNIPanther - January 1, 2012
I count 10 teams with a worse record than KC,
and one team tied at 7-9 (Seattle), so I assume that means KC picks either 11 or 12?
MattL - January 1, 2012
I don'
Bleedingredandgold - January 1, 2012
I don't believe in top 10 picks anyway
too expewnsive and hard to sign for the risk of a rookie player. I hope they trade down to 15-20, pick up a good value in the 1st, and pick up an extra later-round pick.
Bleedingredandgold - January 1, 2012
I hope we don't
cause at least in this 2012 draft you are sacrificing talent for numbers.
The Chiefs don’t need numbers right now but quality players.
Maybe 3 will get us back into the playoffs and a win too
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012

NJChieffan16 - January 1, 2012

Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012

Once Muir ran out of his cool sixteen scripted plays, it was over.
I think if he’s got a week, he can draw up ten to twenty winners…which is why we usually look good in the first and second quarters.
But once he’s off his cheat sheet and forced to get creative, well, THAT’S when he starts to fall back on that patented sweep with TJ, or his world-famous McCluster Draw.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
i heard muir ran out of red bull that was the problem
he would of been good for 24 plays or a case of red bull
niageriannit1 - January 1, 2012
Ok
If we trade Bowe it’ll be for 2 1’s or a 1 and 2, something like that. How would you not at least think about that?
KCinIL - January 1, 2012
To Denver
They wouldn’t use him, best of both worlds
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
I actually wouldn't want Bowe with Tebow.
Bowe’s a great “bailout” WR, and Tebow’s a guy who’s good at extending plays.
He’s TERRIBLE at finding the open man, but if he had a stud to lock onto like Bowe I think he’d look a lot better out there.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
I would think about it, and seriously
But he was shaking Champ all day, and no one else could get open once he went out. I’m just saying that he makes a difference just being on the field. It’s not all about his catches it’s the other catches he makes possible. Not to mention his blocking, I think our running game suffered when he e=went down today as well.
Better to trade Dorsey, who doesn’t really fit in our D anyway.
Gumpster - January 1, 2012
Dorsey will get nowhere near the trade value Bowe will
And coppers usually in on running plays alot too. Are running game sucked cuz we have Muir calling plays
KCinIL - January 1, 2012
No way we'll get that
We’d be lucky to get two 2nds, and we’d still need to franchise him.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
That was my point
In order for him to be traded he’d have to be franchised first, which is gonna make teams have to give up alot if they want to grab em.
KCinIL - January 1, 2012
no sign up bowe long term
u don’t find guys like bowe, even though he drops some, he too good of a weapon not to have

Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
God I love giving MHR a taste of their own medicine
No JC, no Berry, no ToMo, went threw 3 QBs and 1 HC and an 80 yr old OC. The other teams are their record WITH all their top weapons. I’ll take that good feeling going into the offseason
KCinIL - January 1, 2012
There's a giant circle jerk going on over there right now.
I love seeing the “Enjoy your team being on vacation next week!” comments. Let them feel good about it. It’ll last for a week until the Steelers start playing playoff football. 8-8 vs 12-4? Beechez please.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
Oh I already been called classless
But fuck that, they live over here talking that bullshit. What goes around comes right back to MHR! And we came within 4 to the Steelers with PALKO. They wont even get to double digits it’ll be an all out blowout
KCinIL - January 1, 2012
Well, the Steelers are worse than their record.
They got a pretty cake schedule playing the NFC West and AFC South. Of those 8 games, they lost to San Fran and Houston. (the only teams from those divisions that are in the playoffs)
If the spread is 7 or more, I’m taking Denver and the points.
UNIPanther - January 1, 2012
No way
The Steelers in the playoffs are a different breed of beasts. It wont even be close
KCinIL - January 1, 2012
Steelers' run game might be terrible.

KCinIL - January 1, 2012

WHO CARES!! If they really felt they needed to play for something they should have showed up last fuckin week! That win cost us the 8th pick in the draft and now we are picking 12th!!

NJChieffan16 - January 1, 2012 via mobile
And what better player would we have gotten at 8?
Barkley? Nope.
Luck? Nope.
….
The o-lineman of our dreams will still be there. Or the ILB. Or S. Or another bad-ass wideout…although I’m stuck on us going O-line, personally. DeCastro would be a hell of a pickup for this team.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
I need to look into DeCastro more
Seems to be an early favorite pick.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
That's also not correct. We would have been 10th on Strength of Schedule tiebreaker.
Wait and See - January 1, 2012
Chiefs draft #11?
I will take it.. Is it true? Does any one know?
Good win by the Chiefs today. With out 1/2 our team…
Atomic Punx - January 1, 2012
I think it's that or 12. You can't rely on the NFL league standings.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
12.
We were 11 before last week. Tied with Buffalo and Carolina.
They both lost and I don’t think their SoS was affected enough to get above ours, so we would have stayed at 11 even with a loss.
We are actually tied for the 11 spot with 7-9 Arizona, but again, their SoS was worse than ours so we get the 12 spot.
So overall, winning only lost us 1 spot in the draft, not a Top 10 pick like some whiners were bemoaning.
UNIPanther - January 1, 2012
Arizona won today
They’re 8-8, not 7-9.

HOF4DT58 - January 1, 2012

Bleedingredandgold - January 1, 2012
Sorta...
But Flynn has the arm strength that Cassel lacks.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
I dunno. When Matt sets his feet, his arm strength is above average--he can get it done.
His passes are just terribly placed. When his feet aren’t set? Ye gawds, his arm is…well…Palkolicious.
The knock on Flynn coming out of college was his lack of PT in a pro-style offense, and his weak arm. A boffo game with the kind of weapons GB has? Against a Lions D that evidently was scared of playing like men?
Not sold on Flynn yet, he looks like more of what we have right now.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012

Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
It's two games, actually.
Flynn nearly beat the Patriots last year in his only start, I believe after Rodgers concussion against Detroit. Dude looks way better than Cassel, but is still a back-up. A free agent back-up, who increased his value considerably, and might be looking for a place to start. Again, just like Cassel.
neiowakcfan - January 2, 2012
Exactly Falcon, exactly.

We Can Be
There are a few teams in the NFL whose fans deserve to be as pessimistic as they want. The Browns, Chiefs, and Lions. None of these teams have been to, much less won, a Super Bowl since before 1971. The only other teams to not have a Super Bowl appearance are expansion teams, which are still relatively young. Every other team in the NFL has reached the big show. We’ve been abused as fans for decades now, so please excuse us if we get a little snippy. It’s been a rough 40 years.

Best case scenario happened if you ask me.
Raiders wasted two premium picks on nothing. Denver is stuck with Tebow for the near future, which should set the team back about 5 years and Norv and all his aging talent mightve bought themselves another year. Win win win.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012

SDChief - January 1, 2012
disagree... a loss might have given us a higher draft pick.
Otherwise the rest is true.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
Moving up one or two spots isn't really going to make that much of a difference considering where we're picking.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
Not considering the aformentioned damage to the division.
Idahochief - January 1, 2012
BEST case scenario
Would’ve involved OAK going to the playoffs and winning a game.
Because then the 2nd rounder they sent to CIN turns into a first rounder.
MNchiefsfan - January 2, 2012
I believe they would have to win two games...
the second conditional 1st round pick requires them making the conference championship game.
neiowakcfan - January 2, 2012
Oh, well then nevermind
It wouldn’t be worth it to have Raiders fans insufferable over getting to the conference championship…

first one out is Pitt -7.5
No Mendenhall says Tomlin. This is actually a decent line for Bronco backers but it should move a bunch during the week.

My hope at this point is Fisher for HC.

Rumor has it...
Fisher was @ the Buc’s hotel today..

Draft RG3!!
RG3 RG3 RG3 RG3 RG3 RG3…
We won but I still dont think orton is the answer
Cassel sucks and stanzi is not nfl ready!
albuquerquechiefsfan - January 1, 2012 via mobile
The only way we do this is trade up 7 picks.
Pioli won’t do it. We need to fix other problems first… like the OL. For like the fifth year in a row.
Falcon58 - January 1, 2012
Our 1st and 3rd this year and first and 3rd next year, plus Cassel and Orton
For a spot to draft RG3
CorFueled - January 1, 2012
So we draft who? I know its early and combine tends to mix things up a bit but
If it were my decision, I would do everything possible to trade up and draft RG3.
I can see us drafting an Olineman( Riley Reiff -Iowa/ Jonathan Martin-STanford/ David Decastro – Stanford) or Trent Richardson. Otherwise we trade back for more picks, but still fill those positions.
They can build a team with FA too, but they really haven’t shown a history of that
CorFueled - January 1, 2012
My early vote goes to Martin.
GenericBrand - January 1, 2012
Reiff or side of the Stanford beef would work for me.
DeCastro in particular would be a fine choice…
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
barring a crazy trade or things getting shaken up during the combine
I think the chances are high that we draft one of the guys i mentioned
CorFueled - January 1, 2012
Yep, I agree
Steve_Chiefs - January 1, 2012
Agreed
J_r0kk - January 1, 2012
Agreed but Pioli wanting to trade back seems much more likely to me
Wait and See - January 1, 2012
I'd love RGIII, maybe even over Luck. Looks like Flynn might be a good possibility too.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
chill out on flynn
even Palko would have looked good in Flynns spot out there
CorFueled - January 1, 2012
Flynn = a less athletic Cassel
Cassel made his bones throwing to Randy Moss, Wes Welker for a season. Flynn has made his throwing to Nelson, Finley etc.
No thanks, I’ll stick with our caretakers we currently have. Let’s draft the young passer of the future, if we can.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Flynn has a better arm than Cassel
Felt I should mention that if you’re comparing the two.
ChiefWarPaint - January 1, 2012
To you Flynn haters...
aaaaaaaaaaghk!
You’re wrong. The only thing stopping this guy from starting in the NFL is some dude named Rodgers. And btw, Cassel didn’t work out. Get over it.
Orton has proven that argument quite substantially. Even on today’s crappy passing day for Orton, he still finished with 180 yards… only 10 yards shy of Cassel’s average for the season.
And whoever wrote that post about Flynn being less athletic than Cassel: BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! Based on WHAT research?
Personally, I like what Orton brings to the table. With that being said, bring in Flynn and let’s see who can lead the team. Think about it, half of Flynn’s old LSU teammates are already here.
J_r0kk - January 1, 2012
Hi, J_r0kk. I'm the one who aksed about Flynn, athleticism, Cassel, etc.
Guess we need to be introduced. I checked out your profile, and see you hail from Cajun country. That explains the Flynn love; you’d actually know more about him than I would then.
1) I’m not a Flynn hater. If the man’s destined to be a star—and he could be, remember, Len Dawson was a backup before arriving in KC—he will be and someone will give him the chance.
2) I’m not wowed by a player putting up Tecmo stats with a loaded offense. Flynn may be a starter in waiting, but his numbers today came from an insanely good opportunity against an opponent who couldn’t stop Flynn OR Flynn’s teammates. So did Cassel’s big money year in NE…he just had another fourteen games to show it in that one year. Both men showed their skill in loaded offenses as backups to the league’s best passer (at that time). That’s all I was saying.
3) Don’t misread me, I’m over Cassel. I got over Cassel in training camp when I saw ZERO improvement. My acceptance of Cassel’s mediocrity, in fact, is possibly biasing me against Matt Flynn.
4) The athleticism comment comes from the Athlon Pro Sports 2007 Draft scouting report (yes, I still have the magazine). I cannot web-link it but the mag sits in my spare bedroom.
5) I too dig Orton as a skilled placeholder QB…if hell freezes and he becomes more, I’m all for it. But I want to see this team snag a real, young passer to groom, preferably in the draft.
Give me some good info on Flynn…strengths? Weaknesses? And out of curiosity, is LSU’s passer worth a rookie FA contract or not?
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Sup Sal...
I’ll answer your questions as you have them numbered. (Love the name btw. I was a huge Saleaumua fan from back in the day).
1) The guy has always played behind superstar QBs. At LSU he had to watch JaMarcus Russell lead the team until he was drafted by the Raiders. Although “doughboy” Russell was a complete bust in the pros, he was a force to be reckoned with in college. In his first full year as a starting QB at the college level, he led LSU to the national championship. Even in college, without much seasoning, the guy was a winner.
Then, of course, in the pros he follows another superstar in Aaron Rodgers. IMO though, I think it’s the best thing that could have ever happened to Flynn. For four years he’s been able to sit behind Rodgers and study the defense as Rodgers sees it. Today was his day to show everyone what he’s made of.
2) I understand what you’re saying about the Madden stats. Looking back though, I’m really not that impressed with the stats Cassel put up in his year with NE. They weren’t much better than Tyler Thigpens even though he was surrounded with all that talent (he only averaged 230 yds/game passing and 89.4 QB rating vs. Thigpen’s 186 yds/game passing and 76.0 QB rating). TD:INT were almost even between the two QBs that season. I think they thought they had something special in Cassel, but they were wrong.
3) You and me both. I think Cassel has regressed since the 2010 season. More often than not, Cassel has gone for his first option in passing situations (whether his receivers are locked up like Fort Knox or not) and he has repeatedly failed to work his progressions in the routes being run. He is the prototypical “primary receiver or dump off” option QB. There is no middle ground with him. I have seen him pass on so many wide open receivers this year because he simply misread the development of the patterns being run. It’s actually quite a shame. I would have thought a $63 million investment would have paid better dividends. Cassel has proven to be a serviceable back up.
4) Here’s a scouting report I dug up from his combine:
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles?id=367#tabs:tab-analysis
Give it a read and you will get a better understanding of this guy.
5) I agree with the “draft and develop a QB” mentality. But c’mon. We’re talking about the Chiefs. We haven’t done that since… since… since… hahahahahaha. Either way, I look at it like this: If you can’t get Luck, you’re throwing darts in the dark. Just wait until your guy becomes available. Don’t try to force it.
As far as your last question, I would imagine you’re talking about Jarett Lee? I like the kid and I believe he’s a transfer from Harvard so he’s obviously got some intellegence. After college he will probably be a very good insurance salesman.
I hope this insight helped a little.
J_r0kk - January 1, 2012
Not Jarrett, the other one. Jefferson?
Read a report talking up his measurables, wondered about his intellect. Lee is all intellect and no measurables.
I appreciate the run-over—and the scouting report on Flynn. It actually HAS changed my mind somewhat…you know what, he has potential. His physical skills sound better than I’d first understood.
If we were hiring the coach from the Packers, Philbin, I could see a run for Flynn. But he’s not a Parcells/Belichick “system guy,” which leads me to suspect we’d pass over him for Cassel (again) or Orton (again). Especially since, like you said, we don’t exactly draft our passers in KC.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Jordan Jefferson?
OH
PLEASE
GOD
NO!
J_r0kk - January 1, 2012
LOL...allrighty. That's all I needed to know.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
...that could be, WP. The knock I keep seeing/saw back in '07 was his arm.
And we know Cassel ain’t Jeff George…
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Chiefs will be picking 11 or 12.
The only 7-9 teams are the Chiefs and the Seahawks. For those saying Arizona, you’re wrong. They won today and are now 8-8.
Vince D - January 1, 2012
I just read that KC and Seattle
will flip a coin for draft position. Evidently, they tied on all of the tiebreakers.

Haley’s last season, even if he wasn’t here for it, ends with a victory over the Broncos in Denver.

It was funny. I think it was our first time on offense and right away, Richardson got
called for procedure. It’s almost automatic every game.
jcox31mc - January 1, 2012
And people made a big deal over Gaither's false start.
Tarkus - January 1, 2012
It's like he has no "head" for what's going on out there. None.
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
Anyone see him fall on his butt without getting touched?
MountainManMike - January 2, 2012
I think this year doesn't count because of the lockout.
It’s just like the season finale of The League. This year was tainted. The Chiefs remain division champions one more year!
Vince D - January 1, 2012
is anyone else as
Excited as I am to watch this defense play next year with berry back. I mean if it wasn’t for arenas fumbling that punt we probably shut them out today

Love the addition of the salsa music when Cruz scores a TD.
ArrowSpread - January 1, 2012

husker_doc - January 1, 2012
Time to move on
I think Kyle Orton has shown the last two weeks that he is not the answer at QB in KC. Since Stanzi apparently isn’t good enough to play then it must be time to draft a QB.
maddirishman - January 1, 2012
No sane Chiefs fan sees Orton as "the answer."
But he is a much better caretaker QB than Cassel is, that’s for sure. And you and I can bet money we don’t have all night long, but you KNOW Pioli isn’t going to sacrifice the picks we’d need to spend to get Griffin.
I do think we’ll draft someone, just not sure who yet…
go_saleaumua - January 1, 2012
I'd still bring Orton back
Try to trade Cassel and if no one bites, keep him through camp. Never know when a team will lose a QB or two in preseason and get desperate. After that, keep whichever three QB’s look the best.
bh13 - January 1, 2012
so your answer is starting over ?

ACTUALLY FLYNN LOOKED GOOD
LAST YEAR PLAYING NEW ENGLAND ON MNF…SO ITS NOT BASED ON THIS ONE DETROIT GAME…ITS OBVIOUS KC NOT DRAFTING A FRANCHISE QB THIS YEAR…WE GOIN O-LINE, SAFETY DEPTH, LB, AND RB TO NAME A FEW…AS WELL AS TE
JustaArrowheadDude - January 1, 2012 via Android app
KC CANT & I REPEAT CANT
Go into nxt season with these QBs…the only way I wld accept Orton is if its temporary & we grooming a QB…I want a QB we can go and tell him “Go win this game”. We remember the 90s right? BEAST OF A D but our O couldnt put enuff points to win a fuckin playoff game…10-7 lost to Indy wit Bono, 14-10 lost to Denver wit Grbac…we have to FIND A QB
JustaArrowheadDude - January 1, 2012 via Android app
Orton went and put us into position not once but twice to beat Oakland
The Blocking Failed not the QB
