Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli went on 810 WHB's Border Patrol this morning after the team officially announced Romeo Crennel as the new head coach at a Monday press conference. Some of the topics were repeats of what we heard on Monday but the guys did ask Pioli about some free agents.
And when we mention Chiefs free agents this year, we're usually talking about the two big fish -- WR Dwayne Bowe and CB Brandon Carr.
"These are guys that are key components of the past and hopefully the future," Pioli said told Steven St. John and Nate Bukaty. "They're players we have a great deal of respect for. We're going to try to continue to talk to those guys and, again, it's a matter of what those players want to do with us as well."
So this confirms what we basically already knew: the Chiefs want Bowe and Carr back in KC next season. They're both scheduled to be free agents which means KC has to work out a contract with them or slap the franchise tag down to secure the rights to at least one of them. It sounds like contract discussions are ongoing but we don't really know the specifics of where we're at with them.
Pioli also noted the obvious about free agency: not only do the Chiefs have to want a free agent, the free agent has to want the Chiefs. It's a two-way street (and I'm hoping the Chiefs mentioning that yesterday and today isn't a situation where they're greasing the skids for Bowe and/or Carr's exit).

I'm wondering if free agency is
Not just a product of Hunt being cheap but also the fact that players didn’t want to sign with a team coached by Todd Haley.
golfbard - January 10, 2012
A player like Bowe may want to try his hand at Free Agency
See if he can get on a more pass-happy team, with a dynamite QB, one that makes the playoffs more often. Who knows what his agent is telling him, what kind of “brand” he wants to establish for himself, etc. He could want to go to a bigger market (NY team?) to get a bigger national profile.
Lots of factors could go into a player wanting to move on. I hope we can keep him, but sometimes just offering a lot of money and history isn’t going to cut it.
cheapham - January 10, 2012
Never though Bowe would re-sign.
Seems like the type of guy who would want a bigger stage. I think they have a much better chance of retaining Carr, though obviously I hope both are re-signed.
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
bowe will join the saints
and he will break his ankle and ruin his career..like dante hall
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
Dante broke a lot of ankles in his career.
/human joystick
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
until he broke his
he decided to be a bitch and run off to the rams
and he’s watching tv and saying “that was me”
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
and now*
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
Funny....
I seem to remember Dante being a casualty of the switch to the Herm era…
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
don't you remember?
he wanted to join the rams because they had better “training facilities”
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
Nah, I don't remember that.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
We traded Dante to the Rams,
for 5th round pick I think.
ICTChief - January 10, 2012
This is true.
Hall and a 3rd to the Rams for a 3rd and 5th.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
Heard Bowe on ESPN radio doing pregame for the LSU v Bama game last night.
He was excited about Romeo being hired and said that he wanted to be back and called himself a “team player”.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 10, 2012
he's a team player alright
by not signing a new contract with the chiefs
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
What do we know about what's been offered?
What do we know about what Dwayne’s agent is telling him, or KC for that matter? Not having signed as of yet doesn’t mean he won’t… and hearing him be excited about the Crennel hire and that he wants to be back is good news.
neiowakcfan - January 10, 2012
Great to hear
Letting him go and drafting another WR only sets us back another year or so. He won’t be able to come in and be a top notch guy and baldwin isn’t ready either. And Breaston is not a #1 WR at all. he’s built fir the slot, he is all day across the middle of the field.
KC_Chiefer - January 10, 2012
The question is, which team?
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
I heard the interview also
Sorry, I didnt see this post when I mentioned this interview much further down……Bowe was just brimming with personality and candor of his Chiefs team…….I dont think that anyone in the middle of an acrimonious negotiations or unsure of where he will be next season talks like Bowe was talking.
aaronbrown87 - January 10, 2012
+1
and I agree. It’s possible negotiations haven’t even started, or are in early stages. If they were going badly, he’d at least remain mum if not hedge on where he’ll be. Hope you’re right.
neiowakcfan - January 10, 2012
Personally, I say tag and trade Bowe
Spend some money on Carr…unless the money is ridiculous.
SCKSChief - January 10, 2012
I'd retain both unless either is asking for ridiculous money
Then re-sign the guy who is being reasonable, tag and trade the other.
MNchiefsfan - January 10, 2012
Both will likely ask for ridiculous money
Bowe will want Fitz money and Carr will likely seek Flowers money. Personally, I think that is a bit steep for the product.
SCKSChief - January 10, 2012
What are you basing this assumption on?
kcsno56 - January 10, 2012
Gut
And yes, it’s only an assumption. I just think both these guys think they are “all that”. Maybe I’m wrong. I’d like to be wrong when it counts, once! LOL
SCKSChief - January 10, 2012
Haha if it helps, I hope you're wrong too
In that case, make the tough call. Which one is worth overpaying? Frankly, I’d say Carr.
MNchiefsfan - January 10, 2012
Agreed
Tag n trade for the Bowemeister in that case. We could get something nice for him, I’d hope.
SCKSChief - January 10, 2012
Honestly, if that's the route it ends up going
I can see us trying to trade up with STL or MN for RG3.
By offering Bowe to either of those teams we’re offering something more valuable than any pick from this year or next year.
MNchiefsfan - January 10, 2012
Proven commodities are good things
And StL (at least) could use a good WR.
SCKSChief - January 10, 2012
Rec the use of the phrase 'all that'
kcsno56 - January 10, 2012
I believe if we tag and trade Bowe...
then I think we take a penalty in our salary cap.
supersoccersteven - January 10, 2012
I think in a trade, the new team picks up the contract.
Brsrkr - January 10, 2012
no tag no trade pay the man
the chiefs can not replace D. Bowe. to good a player to let go.
niageriannit1 - January 10, 2012
Tag and trade Bowe....for what?
Name a receiver who can come up with a 1000 yard + season with tyler Palko at the helm for a quarter of it. Name a receiver that can be more of a game changer than Dwayne Bowe. You can’t. Not Megatron, not Andre Johnson, maybe Larry Fitzgerald, but he’s not human.
Why would you trade a known commodity that is performing at or above expectations and really turning into a dynasty and pick up a complete and total unknown?
mugglemage - January 11, 2012
Bowe to the Saints.
I’m calling it now.
aasukisuki - January 10, 2012
Think they can afford him?
jmcgoblue - January 10, 2012
Don't they have to throw all kinds of money at Brees first?
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
and Carl Nicks if they want to keep him
KC_Chiefer - January 10, 2012
and 2 other pro bowlers on the o line
reedeasy - January 10, 2012
Who else on the line do they have to re sign?
KC_Chiefer - January 10, 2012
me fail
those guys aren’t FA’s I guess
reedeasy - January 10, 2012
i could see this
with Colston leaving they need a big time WR… but then again i could also see them trying to resign Colston, but i would love to let Bowe go and pick up Colston… but i think we should trade Bowe, 1st, 2nd, and a 2013 1st, maybe another 2013 pick to the Colts for the #1 draft pick and Garcon….
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
I assume this is tongue-in-cheek.
Who would trade for a free agent?
BinSC - January 10, 2012
I guess you mean
trade after Bowe is Franchised
km230015 - January 10, 2012
I've had this same feeling for awhile now...
That Bowe would rather be playing somewhere else.
New England, perhaps?
Scott B. - January 10, 2012
Holy crap, Brady to Bowe would just be stupid
With Welker and the two-headed TE Monster in there
I don’t want to see that.
TRSChief - January 10, 2012
Brady to Bowe equals nightmare
But I do think the Pats have a couple 1st rounders…..not positive though.
hyney99 - January 10, 2012
Trade him to NE
for Hernandez and a pick.
SCKSChief - January 10, 2012
you forgot to add.........
Gronk
LadyChief - January 10, 2012
Yeah
That would make my britches soil themselves. Realistically, we’d never get Gronk…I don’t think. I do think that Hernandez would be an option. Hell, if they wanted to deal Gronk it’s not like I wouldn’t listen!
SCKSChief - January 10, 2012
I thought the same thing
New England makes too much sense for him in some ways. He’d be huge there.

Charles, DJ, Flowers, Hali

Hey, I'm a Colbert fan.
Good WR depth.
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
He coaches college TE's with the best of them.
But his one-liners? To die for.

Tarkus - January 10, 2012
I like the Colbert Report, too.
neiowakcfan - January 10, 2012
Haley didn't seem to hurt our free agency last year...in fact, it seemed to help.
Not disagreeing with you on THIS year’s crowd, though, esp. if Haley’s rift with Bowe was true (which it might not be).
go_saleaumua - January 10, 2012
Yea, it actually seemed that Bowe and Haley got along good. I would imagine that Bowe
respected the “tough love” and how it helped him to greatness. My bet is that he remains a Chief.
jcox31mc - January 10, 2012
It's why I sort of hope our next coach retains Richie Anderson as WR's coach.
He might’ve been an old-school H-back/hybrid TE, but he really seemed to do well with several of our guys (Colbert responded well to his work, as did Bowe, Tucker in ’10, etc). They need some work on routes, from what I can tell—everyone but Breaston. Bowe just needs to keep working on staying focused on the task at hand.
Some folks want to give credit to Haley, sure, but Todd couldn’t be head coach and staring at every snap of reciever practices too. (He had other places besides WR to nervously meddle).
go_saleaumua - January 10, 2012
we already know players
don’t want to play with Matt Cassell. I think he was more of a factor than Haley.
Nicoloco - January 10, 2012
Here we go again.
I can’t make it through one blog without somebody attacking Cassel.
rdlvegas85 - January 10, 2012
How do you know that?
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
Good news, to finally actually hear them say that they're important pieces.
Contract negotiations are one thing, but I was wondering if the Chiefs even wanted these dudes back.
severn58 - January 10, 2012
I think not only does Pioli want them back, but Crennel wants them back even more than Pioli
… and if Thorman was any kind of true journalist he’d be calling Crennel for quotes already

NJChieffan16 - January 10, 2012 via mobile
They are free agents...
So unless they use the franchise tag, we don’t have the option of trading them. They may also just leave of their own accord. I’m sure they will try to at least sign Carr.
pit9 - January 10, 2012
We have the option of the franchise tag.
Don’t have to let one of them walk.
They better “at least” try to sign Carr. Big, strong, top five corners aren’t exactly a dime a dozen.
neiowakcfan - January 10, 2012
I have a bad feeling about these situations....
Chiefs447 - January 10, 2012
Agreed
KansasCityShuffle - January 10, 2012
I'm a little worried, but not too much
Look at the guys comparable to Carr/Bowe — DJ, Charles, Tamba. They’ve locked all those guys up.
Joel Thorman - January 10, 2012
Right.
That might be what scares me most. They’re done but yet these guys are not.
Chiefs447 - January 10, 2012
They were done in their contract years too.
These two are a little later in the process, but not that much.
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
Hali was tagged and only signed during the camp prior to his tagged season
Expect the same with Bowe. Everyone talking about Bowe signing with NO is crazy. He will get the tag if they can’t work out a contract extension, and if it looks like he doesn’t want to be here, Pioli will trade him to a team he’ll sign long term with and get value out of his departing star player.
Sudden - January 10, 2012
Good point about Hali.
I had forgotten about that. So they’re still ahead of the game, compared to him.
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
They are probably waiting to see how the HC situation shook out
and for Bowe he may wait till the OC is picked so he knows who he is working with.
km230015 - January 10, 2012
Hali's timing was affected by the lockout, too.
Brsrkr - January 10, 2012
I want Carr
more than Bowe. That guy has seriously improved. Bowe is still inconsistent. Still, I see them franchising Bowe and trying to get some dumbass franchise such as the Browns to give up more than they should for him and trading him. Carr is more irrepelaceable than Bowe for this team at this point. If Baldiwn improves thee WRs will be alright but we’ll definitely need a thrd WR from free agency. All I want tis an OG and an OT for Jamaal Charles and whatever power back we get for next year. I would be in favor of running the ball 70% of the time with Cassel at QB. Really wish we were in running for Luck or Manning.
Nicoloco - January 10, 2012
Well.. I’m sure we will atleast have one of them next season.. my prediction is resign Carr and franchise Bowe and possibly trade him…
tomahawk44 - January 10, 2012 via mobile
I have a feeling which ever one get the franchise tag
the other will chase the money
KingChief - January 10, 2012

kcchiefsfan515 - January 10, 2012 via mobile
Bowe also had his best season under Cassel
Joel Thorman - January 10, 2012
Bowe had is best season under Weis..
pit9 - January 10, 2012
So he's going to sign with Kansas?
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
I was simply pointing out that Joel's argument
isn’t necessarily valid. Bowe/Cassel success in 2010 should probably be attributed more to Weis than to Cassel’s skill.
pit9 - January 10, 2012
and all this time I thought it was Bowe's skill at going up for passes that were overthrown ...
upamtn - January 10, 2012
Not to be confused with his skill
of dropping easy passes right in his hands.
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
Did Weis throw the ball to Bowe.
2010 Cassel threw the ball 475 times. Brees threw the ball this year 657 times.
2010 we rushed for 2627 yards this year we rushed for 1873 yards.
The only thing Weis did was run Charles. Cassel did not get a chance to throw the ball that much. Charles helped Cassel not Weis.

And Bowe has still been a beast. There is no way we can let him go/trade him. Look at the offense against Denver without him.

I do enjoy you doing the work for me though! Rec & Props Bro!
crashman6 - January 10, 2012
I'm more worried about losing Carr than Bowe
Carr is a good #2 CB and there are a lot of teams in need of a top cover corner (i.e.. Dallas, Carolina, Atlanta) and he could get overpaid like a #1.
The free agent class of WRs is deep plus a few receiver needy teams will draft guys in round 1. Since he wants a big contract and has a history of work ethic issues, teams may not want to pay him. Therefore, he might be best suited to staying here.
golfbard - January 10, 2012
I'm not sure if Carr has as high of a profile outside of KC as inside
KC fans LOVE Carr, and think he’s one of the top CBs (or at least top #2 CB) in the game, and clearly an ascending young talent. I’m not sure if he is thought of as highly elsewhere, even with profootballfocus giving him tons of love.
cheapham - January 10, 2012
By fans
You are right he is relatively unknown. But GMs and those who write checks certainly know him. Every year there’s always a relatively unknown player that becomes a free agent and gets overpaid (i.e. Jason Brown).
golfbard - January 10, 2012
I don’t think it would be overpaying – Carr is better than a lot of #1 corners. Next year he might be OUR #1 corner
PVChiefsfan - January 10, 2012
He's a top 20-25 NFL CB
He deserves to be paid as one.
kcsno56 - January 10, 2012
Carr isn't a number 2
He’s a 1A/1B type, especially since he stays on the right side and sees his fair share of elite WRs.
ChiefWarPaint - January 10, 2012 via mobile
If Bowe leaves, that sucks (though at minimum we should tag and trade him).
But we have to get Carr back. I’m much more comfortable with our depth behind Bowe than with our depth behind Carr.
We could probably move on with Baldwin, Breaston, and a mid round rookie or reasonably cheap FA at receiver and be okay.
But if Carr leaves, we’ve got Arenas, Brown, and Daniels sitting behind him. Brown is probably the only one of those three who even has the potential to be a good to very good starting cornerback, which would mean that we’d need to either sign a top free agent or spend a high draft pick replacing Carr. Carr is arguably the top FA CB, and I’d rather spend our first rounder elsewhere. Get it done, Pioli.
MtHammer - January 10, 2012
actually
Travis daniels and the most decent 1 but i get ue point on keeping carr tho.
kcchiefsfan515 - January 10, 2012 via mobile
Oh, he's definitely the most decent option of the 3 right now.
But he’s also hit his ceiling. If you want somebody to come close to replacing the production you were getting from Carr, though, Brown is the only one who even has a shot to do it.
MtHammer - January 10, 2012
as long as
Brown doesn’t get any more stupid penalties. He was always starting something on ST
GaryfromIA - January 10, 2012

Pioli type of thinking? Some thought we would take Prince last season.
tomahawk44 - January 10, 2012 via mobile
You can never go wrong with a good corner
Chief-blinders-on - January 10, 2012
If we lose Carr
then yes but this offensive line needs to be upgraded badly. You can have all the skill position players in the world and a young QB but if you have no line then you got no offense.

neiowakcfan - January 10, 2012
so the question is
should the chiefs overpay to keep either of them.
and what is overpay.
as a fan do you care what they have to pay to keep them, or you just want them no matter what the cost since they have cap space?
just curious what people think.
fongKC - January 10, 2012
Pay what they're worth.
Slightly overpaying is acceptable, but nothing ridiculous.
bossmanham - January 10, 2012
Worth to whom?
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
Worth to the team within the context of our own personnel situation and the free agent market, obviously.
TRSChief - January 10, 2012
yes.
bossmanham - January 10, 2012
The team.
bossmanham - January 10, 2012
Isn't that what every team does?

Tarkus - January 10, 2012
Isn't that what the question was about?
What us fans think?
bossmanham - January 10, 2012
I forget.
But the point is, of course they’ll offer Bowe what they think he’s worth to the organization. But if he doesn’t agree, the fans will be up in arms over failing to sign him, and call the team cheap. Most fans think the Chiefs should just basically hand him a blank check.
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
Sign Carr.
If Bowe turns down the offer, tag him. Then you know what you have to pay him, and the franchise rules translate to “what he’s worth.”
neiowakcfan - January 10, 2012
I'm on board with you.
I was just saying what was acceptable to me as a fan. If they want to overpay him a bit, I’m fine with it. Depends on how much.

Bowe interview prior to BCS championship game
Did anyone else hear this?………..Bowe was being interviewed due to his being recruited by and played for Sabin for two years and being coached by Miles for two years at LSU. He talked of the smack talk of the chiefs locker room with 3 LSU guys and three Bama players. Talked about Brodie Croyle being a good guy for a bama product……….when asked about returning to the chiefs he made every indication that he has no plans of leaving……I was struck with his answer becuase it didnt have any of the political correct say nothing that is usually part of any of those types of responses……..anybody else hear this interview?
aaronbrown87 - January 10, 2012
Bowe has been
a team guy since day one. Sure..he had a poor interview once where he unintentionally got some teammates in trouble at home, that aside I’ve always thought of Bowe as a career Chief. Guy always shows up on Sunday and has no off-field issues.
Thanks for the post on the interview.

Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
duhhh
Chiefs3188 - January 10, 2012
Seriously? I'm saying this while typing it right now.
It’s not that hard.
MtHammer - January 10, 2012
Cool,
I was saying that exact thing ,while you was typing also.
dbakerku - January 10, 2012
Not at all really.
The whole point to drafting Baldwin and signing Breaston was to make our receiving core better. We let Bowe go and we take a step backward.
bossmanham - January 10, 2012
I don't think anyone really wants him to leave
But if he’s too expensive to keep, it would be better to get some picks for him than to not.
jmcgoblue - January 10, 2012
he's our best offensive player besides JC & by FAR our best this season.
I’ll be surprised & pissed off if he isn’t resigned.
reedeasy - January 10, 2012
Same here
Bowe is a very good player. Rather we are able to get a first round+ for him or not, to me his is worth more than a first round pick. Bowe is a proven commodity, plays at a high level, and doesn’t have any off the field issues. Sure we could draft a better WR than Bowe, but it is far from a guarantee and if we get less than a first for him, it is very unlikely we could draft a better WR.
Scaryclouds - January 10, 2012 via mobile
i say we let Bowe go
and try as hard as possible to sign Carr, not slap him with a Franchise tag… Defenses win Championships… besides Bowe gives the feeling like he just doesn’t like KC… we are a run first team, and Bowe is a character as we all know (wether it be drop passes or what not) but i feel Bowe is done with the Chiefs….
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
I think the Packers, Saints, and Pats will have something to say about defense wins championships
KingChief - January 10, 2012
We beat the packers with defense
not offense, just ask the 2003 Chiefs
Chiefs3188 - January 10, 2012
At least one of those 3 will be in the SB
KingChief - January 10, 2012
Calling Pats v Ravens for the Lamar Hunt trophy.
But if SF can beat NO this weekend, they might beat GB too. We’ll get to see how good SF’s defense is.
Falcon58 - January 10, 2012
if not, slap him with a Franchise Tag... bleh
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
i'll never understand the "tag and trade Bowe"talks
no reason we should trade all that talent away. and on top of that, he’s in his prime… i think its dumb to trade a proven player for draft picks.
LookListenLearn - January 10, 2012 via mobile
he doesn't like KC
he’s just half assing it. Draft someone who’s willing to play
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
what's makes u think he doesn't like kc?
LookListenLearn - January 10, 2012 via mobile
*what
LookListenLearn - January 10, 2012 via mobile
the way he gives up on plays
the way he drops easy balls
pretty much the whole thing
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
halfassing it ... you mean like when he goes out and BLOCKS?
when he does his job and bowls over defenders for Charles and Dex? THAT kind of halfassing it?
I’ll take that any day …
upamtn - January 10, 2012
some pretty halfass plays here ups
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by5NcnVLGQ0
jmcgoblue - January 10, 2012
I know, huh! :-)
upamtn - January 10, 2012
Damn,
that made me ready for the 2012 season already. Plus Bowe makes Cassel look damn good :)
GaryfromIA - January 10, 2012
that right there
is the best thing i love about Bowe… he can take out a corner and safety with ease when he isn’t half assing it… besides didn’t he also get in Haley’s doghouse cause he gave some women tickets to a game in exchange for some sexual favors later on?? i think i remember his name being affiliated with that… i think Bowe loves the Jack almost as much as Orton… the BO connection…
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
and especially what makes you think that in light of his interview last night, as quoted above ...
and as to Bowe “half assing it” … not sure where you come up with that, given that in the game v Broncos he was like our ONLY guy catching anything … and when he went down with his injury our offense came to a standstill
upamtn - January 10, 2012
pittsburg enough said
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
that ball was not catchable
LookListenLearn - January 10, 2012 via mobile
nice to see his entire career is summed up in one questionable play.
km230015 - January 10, 2012
Wow
What LLL said.
MNchiefsfan - January 10, 2012
If half "assing it" means he's a perennial 1000 yard WR and can occasionally lead the NFL in REC TDs I'll take it.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
Yeah!
Chiefs3188 - January 10, 2012
Right?
Guess we need more half-assers.
Chiefs447 - January 10, 2012
If he were full-assing it would he put 2,000 yards and 30 TD’s in a season?
PVChiefsfan - January 10, 2012
Would that make him a complete ass?
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
I'm going to go with "no" there.
I’m a complete ass, and I’ve never had 2k yards and 30 TD’s.
TRSChief - January 10, 2012
Very true. Actually with the right QB, 2000 yds. would not see unreasonable at all.
Bowe’s a good guy, great player and I’d bet that he’s back.
jcox31mc - January 10, 2012
get rid of bowe, draft a WR
let him go to atlanta and fail with matty icicles
Chiefshero - January 10, 2012
never... i say use him
to get the #1 draft pick and Garcon… then we got SB written all over us…
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
You hate Bowe
WHYYY? He has played with how many crap QB’s and still put up numbers. He never (NEVER!) complains.
Chiefs3188 - January 10, 2012
don't hate him..
i love Bowe, he’s been nothing but great for us and the team.. and with Haley gone i could see him really loving this team… but he holds alot of potential in trades… everybody wants that WR that can jump up and just grab a ball 1 handed and make it look like he is playing with school kids… i believe Bowe (plus some other things) holds the key to Andrew Luck… in today’s world i am a firm believer that everything has a price…
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
Everyone wants one
except for us???
Chiefs447 - January 10, 2012
this just makes no sense
Give me a SOLID reason to just let Bowe walk Chiefshero.
ValkRider - January 10, 2012
Carr gets re signed, Bowe gets tagged.
I’m calling it now.
Carr at least has continuity with the defense and some security now that Crennel is HC. My guess is that Carr gets offered a decent deal and takes it.
Bowe on the other hand will try to get out because this offense is not doing so well. The OC position is in turmoil, the QB situation is up in the air, Jamaal might never be the same. Bowe probably wants out. Pioli would be wise to tag him then trade him.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
trade him to Indy
along with what it takes in picks… maybe even McCluster also… get that #1 draft pick and Pierre Garcon… we got Luck, Garcon, Baldwin, Breaston, Moeaki, Charles… oh so vicious….
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
add in #44 also to that Offense
then switch it around to Defense and we have Flowers, Carr, Berry, Lewis, DJ, Hali, Belcher (DJ and Belcher compliment each other very nicely), Houston, Dorsey (maybe trade him to Indy also) Bailey, T-Jax…. that there is a SB caliber team… only other thing you would need to build on is backups and o-line through FA and the Draft…
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
Woah now.
I can see trading a few picks and Bowe for Luck, but I’m not comfortable letting a few picks plus 3 good players go for him. I’d cap trading players to 1 good one.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
remember you are also getting Pierre Garcon
a just as good if not better IMO WR… who can REALLY stretch a defense, we have another Bowe, his name is Baldwin…. get that WR that can finally stretch a Defense…
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
Not sure why the Colts would trade Garcon for Bowe but ok.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
he's a big WR... with that many picks
they can jack Blackmon as the stretch WR with RGIII… by trading some of our picks we just gave them
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
So they'll trade with us to move back to 11 (or 12)
Just to use those picks to trade up to 3rd to draft RG3? And there is no way they could land both Blackmon and RG3.
I think you’re putting too much thought into this.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
or forget about RG3
and just pick up Blackmon, wait a year with Manning then swoop up a QB in next year’s draft… supposely going to be a better pool for QB’s…
BlackDoom - January 10, 2012
Blackmon won't make it past STL.
Tomahawk29 - January 10, 2012
DWAYNE BOWE is a good guy
Just like Knocknheads mentioned
I can’t agree more with Bowe being a cemented Chief. I might have had s hunch he may get away if RAC was not retained as HC. But with RAC in place, I think it adds a new perspective on how Bowe view the organization.
58 was my friend - January 10, 2012
Bowes Crennel comments were part of the interview that struck me
In the interview they ask Bowe about the Crennel hire……..Bowe talked how happy he was with the hire and the good things that it means in the locker room…….Who syas things likes this in the middle of negotiations when one is trying to posture for more millions. Sounds to me that the negotiations are further along with Bowe being part of the team
aaronbrown87 - January 10, 2012
Hey Joel,
Call Pioli and tell him that SFL gives him the green light sign Bowe Carr McClain and Orton…
Thanks
SFLChief - January 10, 2012
Here's a thought: Let's lure the ex-OC from Tampa, Greg Olson, to KC.
-uses power running game…good for McClain
-knows how to use big recievers (or at least in 2010)…good for Bowe, Baldwin
-has worked in college (Tiller) spread, Coryell, and West Coast style systems…good for our system (diversity)
Best of all? He was Orton’s OC his first two years of college. Familiarity breeds success.
go_saleaumua - January 10, 2012
His name came up last year too.
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
yes, I believe that you are correct.
SFLChief - January 10, 2012
Haley had a crush on him. He left Purdue to coach quarterbacks in '03 for Da Bears...when a certain coach of ours was their receivers coach.
Then he migrated to either SF or Detroit with Mariucci (one of the two), ended up with the Rams as QB coach and then OC for Linehan and the Lions, and got hired in Tampa to coach with Jeff Jagozindski. He turned out to be a joke, so the Bucs turned to him…and viola.
I just think his system—a mix of short to intermediate passes, use of TE as a weapon as well as a blocker, some crossing patterns, outs, and slants—is a sucessful mix of what works in the NFL with a team full of taller wideouts and TE’s who can handle the running and passing game. You know…like ours :)
There are hotter names out there, but he’s been around the block in good and bad years and can work with a mix of talent. The biggest difference between what the Erhardt offenses typically do, and what Olson seemed to ask Tampa players to do, is the occasional crossing pattern and the language used to call and diagram plays.
go_saleaumua - January 10, 2012
Excuse me but...
Familiarity breeds successit actually breeds contempt.Jus’ sayin’.
(Backs from thread slowly)
crashman6 - January 10, 2012
I see what you did there....
go_saleaumua - January 10, 2012
and maybe extend colquitt while we're at it
SDChief - January 10, 2012
Well, at least talk is cheap
HIV 2 Elway - January 10, 2012
re-sign Talk!
plays every position & knows everything!
reedeasy - January 10, 2012 via Android app
Hue Jackson is out
KC_Chiefs92 - January 10, 2012
So he can help someone else find their GM?
Tarkus - January 10, 2012
heh
that didn’t work out too well for him!
neiowakcfan - January 10, 2012
$$$!!!
Gotta pay the home grown. If not, why even draft them?
ArrowDread - January 10, 2012
pay them pioli. just pay carr at least, and franchise bowe, or pay bowe and franchise carr
i just cant stand the thought of watching one walk for nothing
SDChief - January 10, 2012
RG3 to enter Draft.. Come on Pioli resign bowe and then trade him to St louis along with are 11/12 for the 2nd pick.
Then go out and get Marqus Colston or Vincent Jackson
Jeremy Daniel - January 10, 2012
This!
This is probably the only way tagging and trading Bowe makes sense.
Don’t trade Bowe for just any picks, trade him for a guaranteed shot at a franchise QB. It may work, it may not, but at least TRY!
Otherwise, Bowe is too good to give up a sure thing starter, just to try and draft a potential starter somewhere else.
Our draft spot (11/12) does not match up with our main need. (O-line) It’s too high to draft a Right Tackle or a guard. We’d be reaching instead of getting value.
If we stand pat at 11, I’d be happy with an Inside LB to join DJ, Hali and Houston. Or a CB to replace potentially upgrade Carr.
I think the best option is to try and tag/trade Bowe to St. Louis where they need a WR and will pay for one, while letting them get out from the strange position they are in. They basically get 1 instant starter and a probably starter and we get our chance at a franchise QB and potentially a dynasty in the upcoming years if it works. Otherwise, we’ll just languish in “not quite over the hump” land with Dwayne Bowe making decent QBs look good, but not much else.
UNIPanther - January 10, 2012
Keep Bowe and Carr
dont trade them, and dont overreact to the fact that we were one game out of first place in our division without the best rb in the league, our 2nd best defensive player who brings our already formidable defense together, and an extremely talented tight end. Not to mention an inside linebacker in siler who always had a knack for making tough and big plays for the chargers.
andrew33 - January 10, 2012
What if....
Injuries happen. Maybe next year, it’s to Albert and Bowe, along with Hali and Flowers. Then do we say “Well if we had those guys…”
You have to overcome in order to win championships. I don’t think just returning our lost starters puts us over the top quite yet. We still have to figure out the O-line and depth issues at safety, corner, linebacker and probably running back.
UNIPanther - January 10, 2012
How can you not mention QB? That has to be our 1st priority Period!! end of story! if we dont nothing we do will matter.
Jeremy Daniel - January 10, 2012
I say we trade Bowe, Carr, and our 1st round pick to St. Louis
so we can get RGIII.
5280ChiefsFan - January 10, 2012
PFF has bowe as the #12 WR? 10 drops this year.
they said he is a top 10 WR but is inconsistant at times.
curious what top 10-12 WR type money? 6 years _ milion, with _ million gauranteed? what kind of contract we working with here?
same questions with carr, what kind of money we talking about?
personally I would really like to sign both no reason to let talent go if we have the money we would be better off keeping our talent we already have and building off of it if possible. add atleast 2 starters ( one on the O-line, ) ( another one somewhere else ) fix the issue at QB either being orton, a FA like maybe jason cambell, or whatever just get a guy who can play that is not named cassell since we dont have the pick to get RG3 or Luck lets atleast upgrade from what cassell brings and only work with what is in our control. add atleast 2-3 solid backups at random positions, and hope we can draft a stud in the draft that we didnt pick in round 1 meaning someone from rounds 2-7 that was better than we all expected like Houston and Bailey was for us last year, we know we got talent in baldwin and hudson it was extra credit getting the talent we got in houston and bailey lets continue to draft like that.
the great thunderlips - January 10, 2012
But we don't have any more control in free agency than we do in the draft.
Less, most times. Any single free agent, we only have a 1/32 chance of signing him. We have as good of a chance of working the draft as we do working free agency.
I would like to bring back Orton, though. Regardless of the gooey personal stuff like Orton being friends with Matt, a QB needing to know that he’s the man….bah, humbug. I want this team to have the best players we can get top to bottom. Last year we suffered a lot because we didn’t have two veteran QBs on the roster, I hope Pioli doesn’t make that same mistake twice.
