The Miami Dolphins fired their head coach Tony Sparano (who just got picked up by the New York Jets) at the end of the 2011 NFL season which means there could be some turnover on their coaching staff.
And methinks we should keep an eye on Miami for potential coaches for the Chiefs staff.
Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, who covered Romeo Crennel when he was with the Cleveland Browns, took a guess that Brian Daboll, Miami's current offensive coordinator, could end up being the Chiefs next offensive coordinator. (Let's reiterate -- he's just guessing, not reporting.)
[Update: And I just heard that Michael Lombardi on 810 WHB this morning speculated on Miami as well. Here I thought I had some original thoughts...]
I've also separately heard that the Chiefs could be looking at someone on Miami's staff and Daboll makes a lot of sense, if the Patriots connection matters. He was in New England in the early-to-mid-2000s so he knows both Crennel and GM Scott Pioli. He's worked for several guys (Tony Sparano, Eric Mangini) who have that Pioli/Parcells connection that we sometimes see in Chiefs' hires.
I'm not saying it's going to happen. I'm just saying he's one of the names being thrown around in league circles.

Enough , with the Patriot connections
go sign Jackson.
Hoochdawg - January 11, 2012
won't happen

he does that anyway

Do you remember the lockout time frame?
Holy crap on a stick we were getting a little desperate for stories around here
nateforchiefs - January 11, 2012
Grats, Nate.........keep it going my brother! One year down and many to come!
Masons - January 11, 2012
Hell yes he does and so do I
The lockout was awful. It just makes me appreciate this kind of stuff all that much more. Keep it comin
TheScootness - January 11, 2012
too bad we let spanos get away
But Daboll did a good job with his team this year especially late.
Bigcherokeechief - January 11, 2012
Sparano?
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
yes.. some reason I started spelling it wrong.. :P
Bigcherokeechief - January 11, 2012
The Chiefs are looking for a "dynamic offensive leader"
Daboll would not satisfy that for me.
GenericBrand - January 11, 2012
Well I know what I would be looking for
But what Crennel Pioli are looking for, not a clue
Not many of note worked under crennel the first time.
Bigcherokeechief - January 11, 2012
please no
Daboll stunk at Cleveland… and stunk in Miami. May as well bring back
SolariMuir. IMO, we need to get an OC that has some experience with QB’s and high scoring offenses. Joe Lombardi from New Orleans would be a nice choice.Chiefsfan584life - January 11, 2012

That was my interpretation too.

I like this hire I think it would be a good fit and he well be here for a wile has well instead of one and done oc also this guy got matt moore going has well he would get cassle to play at is high level again lets get him in here!!!!
Micheal Pearson - January 11, 2012
question is was that spanos who took over and got that going?
Bigcherokeechief - January 11, 2012
Sparano?
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
Brian Shottenheimer?
Thoughts on this? I don’t pay enough attention to the Jets, but certainly an OC that’s been a part of an offense that went to the AFC championship game 2 years in a row…
Shamrock2k - January 11, 2012
If anyone knows how to work with a below mediocre QB it would be Shottenheimer.
GenericBrand - January 11, 2012
Yeah how to do so badly anyways
ChiefWarPaint - January 11, 2012 via mobile
I think Shottenheimer is going to work for his dad in Tampa Bay.
Oh, also I think his dad is going to get the Tampa Bay job.
MtHammer - January 11, 2012
hearing he's talking to Saban about the OC job at Alabama
Chiefs_KC - January 11, 2012
I'm assuming you mean Brian and not Marty.
Although either way that’s interesting…
MtHammer - January 11, 2012
yeah, Brian
Chiefs_KC - January 11, 2012
Actually
I heard from a Miami fan here at work today that Brian said he doesn’t want to work under Marty. Wants to forge his own way instead. Not sure if that’s true or not.
TheScootness - January 11, 2012
I heard the same thing.
Tarkus - January 11, 2012
I want Martz
Our Defense isn’t the problem! Bring Martz in light up the scorebaord, we’d have a complete team. soliod D good Offense. Hve we ever had a complete team! Marty’s era real good D, Offense was alright. With Vermeil, all Offense, no D. Keep Crenell calling the D! Martz Offensive gu ru. Super Bowl!!
ed2k - January 11, 2012
Nobody else wants Martz...
He ignores running backs, never max protects, and let’s his QB’s get killed.
neiowakcfan - January 11, 2012
He ignores running backs?
Tell that to Matt Forte and Marshall Faulk. Jamaal Charles would be fine in Martz’s offense. It’s Tony Moeaki and Leonard Pope who would completely disappear. And also Matt Cassel would die.
Not saying I want him, because I definitely don’t. But Martz can definitely incorporate a dynamic running back into his scheme.
MtHammer - January 11, 2012
Not using the Rb was part of the reason him and Lovie didn't get along
there were games Forte would have less than 10 carries and the media would show some stat that would show that whenever Forte didn’t get x amount ov carries the Bears would lose.
KingChief - January 11, 2012
really, he has pretty much sucked since coming back
after the Greatest show on turf.. But the Bears were contenders so hard to say. I’m ok being pass happy, problem is no one is going to trade us for drew breeze.
Bigcherokeechief - January 11, 2012
okay, so maybe he doesn't _ignore_ running backs
but he certainly seems to burn bridges and get shown the door pretty much everywhere he’s been since St. Louis, and that didn’t end well, either. Not sure that kind of personality is good for the Chiefs, and certainly not for Matty Nice.
neiowakcfan - January 11, 2012
I love how formatting doesn't work in the title.
Note to self: Don’t try to italicize in the title of the post.
neiowakcfan - January 11, 2012
At least you taught me how to italicize
See, something good came of it.
old_school - January 11, 2012 via mobile
He does burn bridges. I am pretty sure under the word Cocky in the dictonary you would see a picture of Martz
Fozzyboyd - January 11, 2012
not a fan, but
we are weak at TE anyway, and i dont suspect too many people would mind if Cassel got killed. I would though.
ottawachiefsfan - January 11, 2012
Everyone says Martz ignores RB but he had a HOF in Marshall Faulk
and this year Matt Forte was having his best year.
I agree with the max protect and that the QB can get killed, which we know that Cassel would do.
Fozzyboyd - January 11, 2012
Don't his backs catch a lot of passes?
The question is whether or not Charles would fit well in that role.
old_school - January 11, 2012 via mobile
He would indeed.
But Martz is a bunghole.
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
he's a double bunghole.
Fozzyboyd - January 11, 2012
Charles has decent hands and him in space is scary.
Fozzyboyd - January 11, 2012
At what point do people begin to realize that maybe, just maybe it WASN’T Martz who was mostly responsible for St. Louis’ offense, and maybe, just maybe, it was actually Vermeil that got his team to the top?
Topchief1 - January 11, 2012
Both answers are incorrect.
It was the 5 Hall of Famers (Faulk, Warner, Pace, Bruce, Holt) and 2 dynamic playmakers (Proehl, Hakim) that put the Rams offense over the top.
RedNose - January 11, 2012
There certainly won't be 5 HOF's
But your point is still valid and the same.
kcsno56 - January 11, 2012
What do you think? Three? Think Warner gets in?
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
Warner probably gets in.
Will be close. He has a very strange career.
I’d set the O/U at 3, yes.
kcsno56 - January 11, 2012
I think Pace is a shoe-in, Warner is likely but not a lock, and Faulk has obviously already been inducted.
I’m less sure about Holt and Bruce.
MtHammer - January 11, 2012
Dunno, Vermeil was able to build another great offense here
Martz hasn’t done that since.
Fozzyboyd - January 11, 2012
Tory "Now I've Got Two Rings" Holt a HOF'er?
Ha HA ha HA HA.
neiowakcfan - January 11, 2012
Daboll isn't bad I think he did good for what he had to work with
I like Brian Schott also
FrankPitts - January 11, 2012
love how Shutdown Corner puts it ...

hell, people here calling for Muir’s head on a platter all year long … odd though, when Haley was gone and Orton was QB we moved the ball pretty well

Hasn't someone made a story/post with a near-exhaustive potential coordinator list in the past?
That’d be fun to see. A poll of all the possibilities would be fun, too. Just saw Dirk Koetter (sp?) listed by Williamson on ESPN as a possibility. There’s probably close to 10 names that might make sense by this point.

yes, an exhaustive list of names of all OC candidates, with work history and scheme beliefs for each one
… and a summary of how each team did while under that OC
about 4-6 hours of work, so we can kick the idea around for an hour, all of which will be summarily ignored by Pioli and Hunt
splendid idea!
upamtn - January 11, 2012
I think someone could do it quicker, especially the regular writers
And, of course, it wouldn’t factor into Pioli and Hunt’s decision. I thought the purpose of this site was for us to share our thoughts on these types of things…

With Dirty Sanchez handing out INTs like candy?
Lots of finger-pointing and name-calling in Jetsville these days.

Nurture + Nature = a lot of 6-3 games.

just get the right guy, and soon before teams start taking away the best options.
who cares about cassel, you could have an awesome run game if romeo commits to what he said on the dp show about the o-line and running game…id like to think we see some te/hb/oline early in this draft. run that football, use our speed guys in space 1 on 1vs lb’s finally mccluster can be a lesser version of sproles, and you could have a really efficient offense to go with a top 10 d.
go get someone
SDChief - January 11, 2012

Man that Miami O looked pretty potent this season
Brad-KC - January 11, 2012
also...he's Canadian, no thanks
Brad-KC - January 11, 2012
Kind of depressing
Only two times in the past 10 seasons has a defensive coach won the super bowl without Manning or Brady.
The two was the Steelers with Tomlin and Cowher.
Looks like you gotta have an elite offense or an elite defense to win…..doesn’t help to be conservative balanced.
I think we are on the verge of a dominate defense. Hopefully through the draft and FA we get even better.
Matt_Grbac - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Yes, being elite on one side of the ball or the other helps win Super Bowls.
More news at 11
Brad-KC - January 11, 2012
weak
ottawachiefsfan - January 11, 2012
What in saying is
Instead of a more balanced approach…like a top 10 offense and top 15 defense.
You may be better off to be top 3 offense and top 20 defense.
Or
Top 3 defense and top top 20 offense.
Matt_Grbac - January 11, 2012 via mobile
no no ...
balanced would be top 3 defense and top 3 offense :-)
upamtn - January 11, 2012
what about special team?
Chiefshero - January 11, 2012
Ya and how did that balancing act go for the Chargers last year...
Didn’t they have the top defense and offense… yet floundered their way out of the playoffs.
ravenhawk - January 11, 2012
that's norv turner's fault
we have RAC
Chiefshero - January 11, 2012
A la Vermeil's Chiefs?
Doesn’t work either
ChiefMedicineMan - January 11, 2012
Brady and the Pats' offense was not real impressive in their first Superbowl run.
They were a balanced and extremely boring team that year.
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
yeah, but their D hit HARD
They had the Rams wide-outs hearing footsteps by the second quarter, and the Greatest Show on Turf was running scared.
neiowakcfan - January 11, 2012
Yeah, I seem to remember that they won that whole season mostly because of their defense.
Which would go against Matt’s comment because Brady wasn’t Brady yet.
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
GAAAAAWWWWWDDDD!
I’m getting sick of these discussions. They start to run together. HIRE SOMEONE ROMEO… I mean PIOLI!!! Get it done. Sick of wondering and waiting.
Falcon58 - January 11, 2012
You don't have to read them :)
timmer - January 11, 2012
But then he might feel guilty commenting.
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
Why should he feel guilty?
It never seems to bother anyone else.
TwelfthMan - January 11, 2012
Sick of waiting?
Crennel was just named HC a few days ago… only one other team has hired a HC for open spots, the Jags. McHoodie went back to New England to a team he used to work for, but other than that, do you see teams hiring right and left? Fercrissakes, the playoffs are still under way.
Free agency is a ways off, and the draft isn’t until April. Slow your roll a bit. Let’s let RAC do some interviewing and get the right guys, not the first guy necessarily. Sheesh, do you think he had his staff identified even before he knew if he was HC?
Heck, he might not even be done letting people GO yet, let alone bringing new people in.
neiowakcfan - January 11, 2012
God I hope not
Daboll is sorry, wouldn’t mind bringing him in at a lower coaching position.
ChiefWarPaint - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Adding Tom Moore to List
Hue Jackson ( He turned the Raider around)
Jim Zorn ( not Bad of a choice, He could learn from Tom Moore)
Dirk Koetter
Brian Daboll
Nick Siriani ( Let him work with Tom Moore)
Philbin( He’s staying in GB)
Muir ( go ahead & retire)
Maurice Carthon( still have ? about play calling, now IF he was to work with Charlie Weis this Summer than YES)
Al Saunders ( NOT COMING BACK HERE BEEN SCREWED TOO MANY TIME. Last time he was here, did great job of calling plays)
Brian Schottenheimer ( TO PREDICTABLE) LOOK AT THE JETS!!!
TODD HALEY
Tom Moore ( Just look at Indy & what he did with Peyton in company, He could help develop Cassel or Stanzi) With his Offensive & Romoe defensive from the last three game, we could be in the Super Bowl in Two years.
BGayles1 - January 11, 2012
Tom Moore
is on the Jets. He is a retired coordinator and now just a consultant. What makes you think he is leaving?
michael28102 - January 11, 2012
time to not mince words.
Hue Jackson would be a prime candidate. Hes pissed and wants to prove everybody wrong. If we cannot get hue, i would be fine having muir back. Muir might have been conservative. but the last 5 games he picked up his aggressiveness. With a HEALTHY chiefs team, his play calling might be a lot better.
Sinny - January 11, 2012
No thanks, no Muir
Hoochdawg - January 11, 2012
Tom Moore
It wouldn’t hurt to see if he would interested in be part-time OC, He could help groom either Zorn or Siriani to be the OC for 2012-13 season.
BGayles1 - January 11, 2012
Just put red and glod on him and tell him to go hit somebody!
antony555 - January 12, 2012
We don,t need conservative
Are the Saints conservative, is new England conservative we get to conservative we will never win a Super Bowl< 65 T-power trap, Hank Stram was not that conservative, i have not forgotten those teams running the scores up on us while we were down, we have never had our fans come to our games with Paper Bags on their heads and if it was not for the Chargers letting Brees go, they still would be walking around with sacks on their heads
