We might be waiting a while for the Kansas City Chiefs to name their offensive and/or defensive coordinators. Bill Williamson of ESPN.com interviewed Romeo Crennel this week and in a blog post indicates that the position(s) are unlikely to be filled in the "immediate future".
Check out the full story here.
The big highlight is that Crennel tells Williamson he hopes to conduct interviews for potential candidates next week and at the Senior Bowl, which is 16 days away. That's a sign that this thing could take a while. Like a couple of weeks.
Perhaps the Chiefs are waiting, like they did with Todd Haley, until a team finishes their playoff run. If that's the case then the it doesn't seem like they would be capitalizing on the advantage of getting an early start on the process, as they've talked about in recent weeks. As long as the right guy is hired, I suppose the timing doesn't really matter.
Williamson lists a few potential candidates in the story. I think the idea of Crennel promoting someone from within on the defensive side makes a lot of sense, especially with the news that he'll continue to call the defensive plays. On the offensive side, I don't think anyone has a really good read on what they'll do.
Then again, some coordinator the Chiefs really like could get fired tomorrow and then the search would be over. It's cliche but it is a fluid process (but I just hope it's not, like, early February-fluid).

They just assumed they’d get McHoodie and were totally unprepared for him to take that Pats job.
NotAGoodName - January 12, 2012
This is all Jerry Sandusky's fault
jmcgoblue - January 12, 2012
Sandusky fucked us...
Indirectly.
Crown Chief - January 12, 2012
If he kept McDaniels out of KC...
that is actually beneficial for the Chiefs.
Though nothing Jerry Sandusky did benefited anyone.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
chiefs will get mchoodie after the pats win the super bowl haha
njchiefs - January 12, 2012 via Android app
I just hope they get an OC that's gonna be around for more than 1 year!
njchiefs - January 12, 2012 via Android app
yeah, though if we get a good one for a year or two
he may be promoted to Head Coach…
I want someone that can continue grooming Nick Sirianni, that is, if Haley doesn’t steal him away to the Jets when they hire him soon.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
I don't think we were ever trying to get McDumbiels.
We never asked permission to interview him. Just silly conjecture from the media. In fact, no one had him going back to the Patriots. Just shows you what they actually know.
bossmanham - January 12, 2012
nobody has had a good read on that since 2003 ...
upamolehill - January 12, 2012
Mole..................
you are back! How are things underground?
LadyChief - January 12, 2012
By golly it is molehill!
I haven’t seen you around these parts sice last April!

Did Romeo call the defensive plays in Cleveland?
jack_sparrow - January 12, 2012
Hue Jackson seems likely
I just posted this in the previous thread. Someone mentioned that Crennel brought Jackson up from USC. Jackson also recruited Cassel while at USC. Those are two significant connections.
Assuming Jackson has the hate on for Oakland and Pioli wants to roll with Cassel, this hiring would make a lot of sense. Jackson could get pay back twice a year against Oakland and could be re-united with the guy he recruited several years ago. Unfortunately, starting Cassel would probably be the result of this hiring…
7chiefs7 - January 12, 2012
I think starting Cassel is going to happen regardless.
But at least we could give him a coordinator that can stay awake during games. Jackson did quite a bit with Campbell.
EricBerryYoYouScary - January 12, 2012
There is not a coordinator alive who can make throws for Cassel.
Mr.Pibbs - January 12, 2012
Hey don't look at me...
I’m leading the Orton train or anyone else for that matter. It’s that Pioli guy you have to worry about.
EricBerryYoYouScary - January 12, 2012
I'd like Jackson
but with each passing day it seems more and more unlikely.
Hoochdawg - January 12, 2012
Not necessarily
The guy was unexpectedly fired a couple days ago…I’m sure he needs some time to figure out what he wants.
jmcgoblue - January 12, 2012
Maybe
But then again he only had 1 year as the Raiders HC. If he was there for 3-5 years I could see him wanting to look over everything and re-evaluate. However, that’s not the case. A guy like that would surely want to redeem himself after his public tirade against his players and assistants and would like want to find a fit where he can get back in the game and win it with a team waiting to take it to another level.
Sure. he’s there are things he’s surely gotta weigh out but an open vacancy like this? It also gives him a lot of control with the offense, a condition he likes to work under.
JMagsKC1 - January 12, 2012
He may be waiting
to see what opportunities are available. There will likely be some more GM/HC changes around the league, and Jackson may be waiting to hear about any HC offers before interviewing for OC spots. I don’t get all the panic around here to hire an OC right now. if we get into February and don’t have an OC, it may become more troublesome (unless he is coaching in the Super Bowl).
Chiefs4Life - January 12, 2012
I would want one before FA starts for sure
nateforchiefs - January 12, 2012 via mobile
this would suggest that the offensive coach to be named may be in the playoffs right now.
otherwise i see no reason to wait a week….just saying….
obviously romeo still is running the D, and thats awesome because we all know gibbs and thomas are freaking awesome assistants.
so the question is, who are they targeting, and is the target a HC candidate anywhere that may ruin what we want.
this is a major major hire….imo this offensive hire will determine just how much success the entire team will have, lets hope they get the right guy who has just been waiting for all the weapons the chiefs have
SDChief - January 12, 2012
Clements anyone......? Whose with me?
talastan - January 12, 2012
weis was the best thing to happen for cassel
my guess orton becomes the starter unless peyton manning comes to town. i would try to trade cassel. his contract isn’t that big anymore. he already got alot of up front money
niageriannit1 - January 12, 2012
Carmichael Sanit OC would be AWESOME!! Bring in Mike Nolan for DC
Jeremy Daniel - January 12, 2012
I like the idea of Mike Nolan running this defense
even if he is in cahoots with Crennel making the final call.
While the final three game were gravy outside of that Dick Seymour… this is still a defense that gave up a lot of points and missed several tackles early in the year and played out of position often. Sure, they got progressively better. However, I think it would be good to hire a couple coaches that would help give the team an extra eye and someone that has talent making game plans.
One of the Chiefs biggest flaws this season, was their utter lack of ability in game planning on both sides of the ball or making corrections at half time. Even late in the season… Looking at you Pittsburgh, New York and New England games.
Continuity is all well and good, but this team still needs fresh perspective on both sides of the ball IMO. Yes, even the defense. I know everyone is excited about RAC and that is amazing! For me, I don’t want to watch this team walk into next season status quo on defense plus the return of Berry and Siler. It probably just won’t be enough.
This team needs some smart hires, hires like it had two years ago that led us to a divisional championship when they brought in Weis and Crennel. There are some solid names out there and I would like to see some serious effort being made soon.
Waiting until Mobile is fine, as long as they don’t leave with a bunch of no’s.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
They were also on the field considerably more than the offense
Just wanted to add that as well
JMagsKC1 - January 12, 2012
Sure they were, the offense didn't give them much to work with.
I think everyone knows that. Does that excuse them being blown out like they were? No, not IMO.
Even on defense, this team has a lot of improving to do and I think it is important that they don’t think they are good with were they are.
They will have to adjust to life with Eric Berry again. Schematically, that will take some adjusting. Getting him back is a huge get, but I don’t want to see them screw it up.
They need to maximize blitz opportunities between Hali and Houston and probably work in another new NT. That will take some time and a new coach will help with those things along. This next DC hire is huge.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
Late in the season the Jets marched right down the field on the first possession.
electriclight - January 12, 2012
we got embarrassed in the jets game
haley got out coached alot this past year
niageriannit1 - January 12, 2012
The entire team got out coached a lot this year...
Haley is gone now, but let’s not pretend he was the only problem. That is my worry at this point, that the Chiefs are going to ignore some serious issues because Todd Haley was fired and a that ought to do it attitude…
Though, at this point all that we can do is wait patiently and see what happens.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
I don't see Nolan happening
But that would be ridiculously awesome
MNchiefsfan - January 12, 2012
agreed, but everyone should be on the table buddy...
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
Maybe they are waiting to see
who Jeff Fisher hires. Where does he coach, again?
neiowakcfan - January 12, 2012
In his mind.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
with his brain
LadyChief - January 12, 2012
I don't care how long it takes
As long as they get it right.
Most important hire of the offseason moving forward.
kcsno56 - January 12, 2012
I agree...
I just hope that we don’t take too long. I would hate to see another team make a move that we should have made.
O.C.ChiefsFan - January 12, 2012
I can't imagine they are just sitting on there thumbs right now...
However, I was also thoroughly convinced Kansas City was going to be ready for the Buffalo Bills last September 11th, so you never really know.
They could be playing beer pong on Scott’s huge desk that Joe Posnanski wrote about. Who knows?
I hope they are doing the dam thing.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
Clements is on Dmitroffs radar. I wonder if he's on Pioli's.
Being buddies maybe so?
GenericBrand - January 12, 2012
could be
LadyChief - January 12, 2012
Atlanta is going to be making some serious changes as well...
I wonder if Tony will retire this season. One day contract anyone?
It would be nice to get him for a year opposite Tony Moeaki, but that is a dream…
Here is a nice dream
Tom Clements OC
Mel Tucker DC
Peyton Manning QB
Carl Nicks G
Tony Gonzalez TE
Re-sign Dwayne Bowe
Re-sign Brandon Carr
Healthy returns of
Jamaal Charles
Tony Moeaki
Eric Berry
Gabe Miller
Brandon Siler
Awe, keep dreaming
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
Yep........
Dream on
LadyChief - January 12, 2012
TG just signed a two-year extension.
Let him fail somewhere else.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
Yeah, I guess he did
One year 7 million
I don’t know how I missed that… my god.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
My bad on the length of the deal.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
It's no biggie smalls...
I didn’t even know it happened. He had a pretty decent year this past season, why do you think he will fail?
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
I had forgot that happened..............
I just didn’t like him whining his way out of town
LadyChief - January 12, 2012
Tony G was a great Chief...
and I understood his reasons for leaving. Especially in today’s NFL where it is rare to have team loyalty for a career. Heck look at Jerry Rice, the greatest ever. He finished his career as a donkey.
TG will always be one of my all time favorite Chiefs, he gave me way to many dunks and lay-ups to celebrate to just treat him like garbage now.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
Jerry Rice
Finished his career with Seattle, but played for the Raiders before that. Jerry and Barry Sanders were my favorite players growing up.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 12, 2012
hmmm
San Francisco 49ers (1985–2000)
Oakland Raiders (2001–2004)
Seattle Seahawks (2004)
Denver Broncos (2005)*
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
i think jerry rice stopped for a cup of coffee in denver
didn’t make it through training camp i believe
niageriannit1 - January 12, 2012
exactly... but it is in the books
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
yes it is
niageriannit1 - January 12, 2012
kind of like when ronnie lott was in kc for a week or 2
niageriannit1 - January 12, 2012
or Zach Thomas
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
that NT Castille i think from the cowboys, hung around for a week
niageriannit1 - January 12, 2012
Jerry and Barry
are a couple of amazing players in NFL history. Ya can’t go wrong with those two.
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
Talking about playoff fail.
The reason he begged himself out of KC.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
and fail they did do
Chief-blinders-on - January 12, 2012
Again.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
Yeah, he's been terrible.
kcsno56 - January 12, 2012
No he hasn't.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
Of all people
Didn’t think you’d need the sarcasm font.
kcsno56 - January 12, 2012
I'd be in favor of Hue Jackson
I actually like the guy. He’s in it, he’s agressive, he’s not a pushover…I like his style! Just saying
JMagsKC1 - January 12, 2012
It would not be unsigificant
to have an African American head coach, OC and DC (depending on who gets the hire there).
Might even help get some potential free agents to look our way with the positive rep that both Crennel and Jackson seem to get from players.
I’m not saying it should be done because of this, or that it even matters in a football sense.
However you couldn’t escape the historic nature of such a situation. Not to mention in a city that houses the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
UNIPanther - January 12, 2012
I've had the same thoughts myself
personally I think Jackson is a great fit for us regardless, but the history it creates is well worth noting too. He has my vote….wish it counted….
shotty - January 12, 2012
I'm on board
we need an OC with a little fire under his feet. Maybe a little revenge for Oakland too :)
GaryfromIA - January 12, 2012
we need a return of Raider Week!
Bleedingredandgold - January 12, 2012
Not a bad thought
Emmit Thomas as DC would compound that.
ExRoyalsFan - January 12, 2012
Jackson appears to be disruptive
Al Saunders come home!
HowSweetItIs - January 13, 2012
i was on youtube looking at the Chiefs 2010 season … Charlie did fix the QB and saw us having fun out there.
i know it is hard to have fun when majority of your Pro Bowlers are on IR and the coach threw a fit and stuck in a person who shouldnt have been in the NFL at all playing QB.
2012 season should be … The Year of the Chiefs!!
