4 months ago: KANSAS CITY, MO - DECEMBER 18: (FILE PHOTO) Head coach Romeo Crennel of the Kansas City Chiefs watches from the sidelines during the game against the Green Bay Packers on December 18, 2011 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs named Crennel the permanent head coach on Monday. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)
Romeo Crennel has his second head coaching position. The Kansas City Chiefs have their 12th head coach in franchise history. Whether the pairing works or not is to be seen in the near and perhaps distant future. However, both made the right choice in the current times.

For the Chiefs, how could you go in another direction? The team has been a coaching carousel since the days of Marty Schottenheimer and for the most part, a doormat. Finally, a young and talented nucleus has been put in place. The time has come for some continuity and consistency in the coaching ranks. Scott Pioli had to stabilize the team with this hire. He's done that.
Sure, Kansas City could have thrown money at a veteran coach (Jeff Fisher, Jon Gruden) or tried to hire a young assistant. Maybe those things would've worked out, but i doubt it. The team would have to go through another future change and no doubt a reshaping of the roster. It would be tougher to keep Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr especially if an unproven coach was brought in.
This team is built to win now, even with the quarterback situation in limbo. The defense is championship caliber with the return of Eric Berry and the offense is loaded with weapons. Hiring Crennel allows the Chiefs to continue on the same path defensively and hear a familiar message in the locker room. These things cannot be understated.
Some will point out that the offense is still going to be affected and changed. That needs to happen anyway even if Todd Haley had been retained. Bill Muir clearly wasn't the answer as an old and at out-of-touch offensive coordinator. Changing schemes and philosophy isn't going to be a burden on that group; it will be taking one off their shoulders.
This hiring comes with some risk. It can't be ignored that Crennel was fired in his first and only head coaching job. On the flip side, you could easily argue who has ever won in Cleveland since it became an NFL franchise again? We're about to find out which factor was more responsible.
Crennel is the ultimate roll of the dice and safest move at the same time. It's the right decision. Let's just hope it doesn't come up snake eyes.

Hey, OT
did anyone listen to BCarr on Wright’s show tonight? I don’t see any news coming out of it, so I assume nothing big was revealed.
bossmanham - January 12, 2012
I heard the tail end and then Nick's comments.
I guess the most telling is that Carr wanted to sign before last season. Pioli’s unwillingness to do so is going to cost the team, if Carr comes back. Made it sound like he wanted to be in KC but that he wouldn’t be taking much of a discount to do so, nor should he.
HIV 2 Elway - January 12, 2012
Hmmm,
I don’t know that I’d put too terribly much into the timing. He waited with Tamba Hali as well. Tamba wanted to sign before the lockout and not be franchised, but it happened and then Tamba got paid.
He could be the guy we franchise, though…
bossmanham - January 12, 2012
NW'S point is
That Scott could have signed him for a helluva lot cheaper (in the 5 yr 25 mil. Range) not so much anymore
chiefnation - January 12, 2012 via mobile
That's true.
He’s more valuable now. You could say that about any player who has his best year in a contract year. Of course, he didn’t know he was going to have his best year.

I just hope he stays in KC...he obviously proved himself
and gave himself a bigger pay check in my opinion. Pioli better get this done!
jcrunninwild - January 12, 2012
Did Carr himself say he wouldn't give a hometown discount?
Or was that Wright bloviating?
bossmanham - January 12, 2012
Made it sound like he was going to look out for #1.
That Pioli had his chance for a discount and that time has passed. Of course none of that was said explicitly so mouth breathers will probably be up in arms.
HIV 2 Elway - January 12, 2012
It's not my fault I have a deviated septum.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012

That too.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
Oh, but we always assume Pioli means
something other than what he says, right?
neiowakcfan - January 13, 2012
I can't say I blame Pioli for not giving Carr a long term deal sooner
He only this season became consistent about getting his head around most of the time, and still wasn’t the corner Flowers is. Priorities.
Hindsight being what it is, it would’ve been a good move to long him up long term. At the time, though, I can see why the hesitation.
“No hometown discount” could mean almost anything. Does he view himself as the equal to Flowers? If so, we’ll have to pay him as much.
MNchiefsfan - January 12, 2012
Why Not
He gave up less TD’s this season.
Paying them equally seems fair to me
Steve_Chiefs - January 12, 2012
But he was far inferior against the run
Which is a big deal to me.
MNchiefsfan - January 12, 2012
yup no doubt about that and b flow
And another thing I like about Carr is, somebody in the kc media (I think Mitch holthus) said he thinks Carr is the strongest pound for pound on the team.
chiefnation - January 12, 2012 via mobile
yeah
But we had the damn money. Its a mistake pioli should learn from. Could of for sure locked him up and for a lot less.
chiefnation - January 12, 2012 via mobile
I'm not sure I buy into that argument
Just because you have the money doesn’t mean you spend it.
I personally am all for getting him re-signed, though.
MNchiefsfan - January 12, 2012
mouth breathers usually say
Hunt is too cheap and Pioli is stupid, so you’ve got that going for you
neiowakcfan - January 13, 2012
He also commented on how he felt like he had some unfinished business with regards to winning with the rest of the secondary he's grown so close with
And that he loves Kansas City, and would love to come back. But, yes, he does want to assess his worth on the open market.
ArrowSpread - January 12, 2012
Crennel does make the most sense for the current scenario
The chances of KC landing Fischer, Gruden, or Cowher were pretty weak from the start. Even if the Chiefs had gone all in its a bit unrealistic to expect great results the first couple of years. It would take at least two years for the team to be great again because the entire scheme and feel of the team would have changed. By that point, some of our best players would be starting the downward slide of their career. Sure they would still be good players, but the window of opportunity would be narrower, and who knows which free agents would have decided to stay or leave.
I like our team. I think we have some great players that don’t get enough coverage in the spot light. Because the team believes in Crennel and supports him, chances are eveyone is willing to fight hard for him. Who knows how players would react to the other choices? Although Crennel doesn’t seem like a great hire because of his time at Cleveland, I feel he really was the best candidate for this team going forward. Only time will tell how true that really is.

That’s debatable. In any case, we need both.
Tarkus - January 12, 2012
That's true.
2010 was Flowers, 2011 was Carr.
My question will be, if we let Carr go, what the heck were we saving that cap money for? It sure wasn’t some awesome quarterback. BJ Kissel had a good article that asked how are we going to hit the salary floor if we don’t pay our guys.

PFF has Flowers ranked considerably higher than Carr...
Top 5 in the NFL, actually.
A big part of it is that Flowers is excellent against the run, while Carr is subpar.
MNchiefsfan - January 12, 2012
Carr is six damn feet tall
who gives a shit if he is sub-par against the run? We’ve got T-Jax for that.
guffaw
Who is gonna cover the six foot five receivers in the division? Hmmmm?
neiowakcfan - January 13, 2012
Brandon Flowers
I want to keep Carr as well, but Flowers’ height hasn’t hurt him against Vincent Jackson and others so far in his career
PVChiefsfan - January 13, 2012
Flowers has done just fine against those receivers
At least as well as Carr.
And it’s foolish to not care if your players are one-dimensional. Stopping the run and tackling ability is an important part of a CB’s job.
MNchiefsfan - January 13, 2012
True
and we have even more than that available to spend.
We could spend up to 150 Million if I read correctly that 2011 cap can be carried over into 2012
Steve_Chiefs - January 12, 2012
We'd have to give Carr a 5 year contract worth probably $35 mil minimum....
That’s what he’s worth, probably closer to $40 mil. Some team might offer him $50 mil+. We’ll have to see.

He needs to hire a qualified oc, and let him run it. No more r2p2, sure a good run game is a defenses good friend, points are their best friend! Get the o-line what it needs, Orton at qb. Cassel could be the downfall of RAC.

RAC is right if we can get the right OC
We need a good one, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. DC is less of a problem with RAC calling the plays. An upgrade at OLC to go along with an upgraded OLine (hope, hope).
Could use a QB coach with a good track record of developing rookies, if not for this year, for next.

electriclight - January 13, 2012
Cassel may get his shot
Orton’s a FA, and the cold fact is that a rookie QB needs a decent Oline.
If we trade picks to get RGIII, we lessen our chances to build Oline in the long term. Ergo, you get the line first, with a long term plan and OLC, and THEN you can trade picks to get a QBotF.
My take: The Oline will get work this draft, not a QB pick. KO walks, and MC gets another shot.
Bleedingredandgold - January 12, 2012
I like Cassel but when the OL breaks down so does Matt Cassel. WE need a QB that will make plays when the OL breaks down. i
Matt Cassel is not that player. Matt was an improvement and serviceable as we improved from a 2-14 to a 10-6 and a 7-9 injuried football team. We now need a QB that is going to take us to the next step—which is 11-12 wins, home playoff games, playoff wins, and a possible Super Bowl Championship.
NFL season ticket holder - January 12, 2012
O line first
You won’t get 11-12 wins behind a bad line, which is what we will have if we don’t work BOTH the draft and FA. New QB can wait (unless we can land Peyton)
Bleedingredandgold - January 12, 2012
Not totally down on Cassel
He has had his chance, he has shown he has not grown in the last three years. It is time to move on.
Eric Allen - January 12, 2012 via mobile
Not at the price of a rookie QB behind a bad Oline
Bleedingredandgold - January 12, 2012
Personally, I don't hate him, I just think he's not going to get any better.
He’s an average at best QB who has struggled when playing without Randy Moss or Jamaal Charles. Thankfully we’ll have Charles back next year, but our lives would be a lot easier if we could upgrade the position. The goal should be to win the Super Bowl, and Cassel is the type of QB who we could win it with, but we require a lot of talent around him. We’d be better off taking a risk at QB, either by starting Stanzi or signing Manning or drafting a new guy, than to be content with mediocrity.
wustl_chiefs_fan - January 12, 2012
You certainly aren’t looking for friends on here.

TRSChief - January 12, 2012

Tarkus - January 12, 2012
I like Cassel too. He seems like a nice guy and a fierce competitor. But he’s not a starting QB, and the sooner the Chiefs realize that, the better off they would be. There’s a reason the chiefs offense improved the moment he was gone, and a proper QB was inserted.
Topchief1 - January 13, 2012

True. I'm probably setting the bar a little high for these parts.
Entirely my mistake.
TRSChief - January 13, 2012
I like Matt too hes a good QB but hes underdeveloped in certain areas and at his age I dont he can improve with us as hes basically never been challenged to improve
The pressure will be on if he struggles early in camp and the start of the season and he will essentially be the scapegoat and the chatter will be about why we didnt bring back Orton .
Willie Beamon - January 12, 2012
what should help in signing carr is the fact that RAC is the head coach
niageriannit1 - January 12, 2012
I aprove.
I really don’t think it matters that much. When healthy, we have enough talent to be a good team and are a good QB away from being one of the best teams. So we don’t need the greatest coach ever, we just need somebody who isn’t going to screw it up, so Romeo is a fine choice.
wustl_chiefs_fan - January 12, 2012
Cowher or Fisher
were the better calls but if those two were unattainable, then RAC really was the only choice remaining and time will tell if his soft player’s coach rep from his Cleveland days is accurate or not. I’ll be crossing my fingers for him for sure. But he’s not going to win a lot of playoff games with Matt Cassel although if they solidify the OL and JC stays healthy and we can have a short yardage back who actually gets first downs, then we can win the AFC West even with MC. It’s a very weak division. I for one want us to not be one-and-done in the playoffs anymore, so sticking with MC is a waste of all this roster’s talent. With Orton, we’d probably get at least two more wins a season than with MC and with Manning, good God we could become an unstoppable playoff powerhouse. When has Manning ever had a 12th-ranked defense backing him up? I can dream, right?
Nicoloco - January 12, 2012

Or a debate over who should be our HC
Or a “real fan” post
Any strong writers out there want to take a stab at a Chiefs 2011 season recap? I’m trying to get Chris Sembower to do a posterized
comicgraphic novel about the ups and downs of what this year has been for the team and us at AP.Also, since MN is to
longwindedeloquent for twitter, I’m thinking about setting up a fake account for him and doing funny 140 character summaries of his posts.shh don’t tell him

FakeMN ?
He will sue your Chinese ? Wait ? Uh carry on :)

Season Recap:
The first two games were about as bad as could be. Not only did we get blown out, we lost two of our best players for the year. We then spent the next couple weeks beating bad teams to get back to a winning record, before blowing “easy” games to the Dolphins and Broncos, losing Cassel for the year in the process, just in time for the tough part of our schedule.
So Haley makes one of the two really bad decisions in his head coaching career by starting Palko over Stanzi (the other bad decision was Thomas Jones). Palko gets destroyed by the Pats, but surprisingly managed to make the Steelers game close and actually beat a Cutler-less Chicago team. Then we got crushed by the Jets, causing Haley to be fired, and Romeo took over.
After Romeo took over, Orton recovered from his injury and led us to a win over the Packers in a game that showed how good our defense can be when not given terrible field position by Palko. We then lost to the Raiders at home for the millionth year in a row, and beat the Broncos 7-3, showing again how dominant our defense is.

I know you could condense that some more :)
Steve_Chiefs - January 12, 2012
WTF?
Hell, I’m not even high, and I know we went 0-3
neiowakcfan - January 13, 2012
I've really been waiting for something that maybe compares Orton and Cassel
Maybe suggesting we sign Orton and trade Cassel.
With any luck it would spawn a lengthy conversation about how they’re the same quarterback / not the answer and that we should trade up to the top of the draft for a franchise QB.
TRSChief - January 12, 2012
We will do all that and then
draft a guy at the top of the 2013 draft
See www.walterfootball.com
it is all very clear for me there
Steve_Chiefs - January 12, 2012
the best qb is orton, if we do zero upgrade at qb this year, i want to role the dice with orton

We could talk about who is most likely to move to L.A.
Considering that the NFL is the largest sports league in the world, that it involves the second largest city in that country and has a very high probability of happening in the next couple years, people really don’t talk about it much.
I’m thinking it will probably be the Chargers, because of their stadium situation and they probably have some sort of fanbase already in L.A. I’m hoping the Rams move, so if I ever have to spend another football season in St. Louis they will be more likely to show Chiefs games.

Not to rain on everyone's parade
but Scott Pioli might see Brandon Carr the same way he viewed Asante Samuel.
Just food for thought, I really hope Brandon stays.
Chief Willie Wildcat - January 12, 2012
Old and washed up and wanting too much money?
Last part maybe, but definitely not the first.
JacinB - January 13, 2012
Pioli is a fast learner!
Pioli has to make a big splash this up coming season because he’s not getting another chance, if he’s wise, meaning able to evaluate reality based on decisions made in the past and make better one’s. We could be in for a pretty exciting year. I think he (Pioli) respects RAC opinion’s far more than Toddy (Pioli had to baby sit (control!!!) hot head Todd Haley) Haley, which could keep him away from some of his would be bad personnel decisions, regarding players of course. I think Pioli is a fast learner, we’ll see! Go Chiefs!
absolutetruthyeahnojoke - January 13, 2012
I'm Excited!
We are in for an exciting season!
absolutetruthyeahnojoke - January 13, 2012
lets just hope we dont get hit with injuries.
or we will blame romeo for that and fire him like Haley. Its been a disaster every time we hire a "players " coACH. rem Frank Ganz, Gunther Cunningham and Herm Edwards.?
I want to be optimistic about this but we hired a bandaid for a coach who is not much younger than MUIR. Ortons QB exploits have been mediocre at best and he still makes stupid decisions in the red zone and the 4th qtr.
