Brandon Carr On Returning To The Chiefs In 2012

The topic of free agency with the Kansas City Chiefs this year will center around two names -- CB Brandon Carr and WR Dwayne Bowe. Both are impending free agents and both can command some serious coin in the open market.

And one of those guys wants to stay in Kansas City if everything gets worked out. Carr talked to Nick Wright of 610 Sports on Thursday afternoon and said that, while he didn't want to talk much about the contract, he'd be willing to come back to KC if everything works out.

"If everything works out the way, you know, that it should I will be in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform but at the end of the day it's going to be my decision to make," Carr said. "It's going to be a hard one. It's not going to be easy. I've been out here four years and I have a lot of things established here and a lot of friendships and on the field getting a lot of things done."

Indeed, it will be a hard decision. This is where Carr grew up as a professional football player. He's ingrained into the community. He's friends with players on the team. The fans (and the team) want him back.

I hope it all works out and Carr is indeed in Chiefs red next year.

Here's the full audio of Carr's appearance on Nick's show. There's some franchise tag talk in there, too.

I hope Pioli & co can get it done to keep both Carr & Bowe

Not start muddling with changing starters already when this team is just starting to gel…

Very huge piece to the puzzle...

got to get it done.

5 years $50M

Do it. That’s what it takes? Do it. Signing our own guys is an important part of FA? Prove it. Do it.

$10m per year?

maybe with incentives

he'd make more if he was f. tagged.
Depends how it is structured.

But I’d go with 5 years at $40 mil.

Yeah or somewhere in between

$50 mil. puts him on par with Flowers. He’s good but does his play warrant the same kind of deal?

Flowers got 5 years $50 mil. with $22 mil. guaranteed.

He's better then flowers

So I don’t see why not

I love Carr, but at this point he is not better than Flowers

Even after a slump to start 2011 Flowers is often considered a top 5 corner by analysts. In 2010 Flowers had such a great season that only Revis and Asomugha were arguably better.

Carr is not there yet, but given that he started with a steeper hill to climb coming from Division II, he may still be farther from his ceiling than Flowers is from his. I would love to keep Carr, and I think it’s worth $50 million if that is what it takes, but he is not better than Flowers at this point…

I'd guess Carr would get no more than 5 years at $45 mil.

He’d be considered the 2nd best CB on the team, but the margin isn’t that wide. Flowers is considered top 5? Carr is minimum top 20 in the league… maybe top 15.

He's been better then flowers for two years now.

Way more consistent, bigger, faster and has shut down a host of elite WRs.

Flowers allows way to many TDs and no name WRs somehow have career years on him and he’s injury-prone.

He’s got better ball skills but theyre not elite enough to phone home about, tackling is better but bigger players still give him trouble there.

The data (at least as organized and presented by PFF) disagree with you

Flowers is consistently Top 5 – I have seen them put Carr in the high teens overall (he is occasionally ahead of Flowers in a given category – I think Carr led the league in passes defended last season).

Don’t misunderstand me – I think there is a solid chance Carr will be better than Flowers in a year or two.

How?

Explain this with your own words not a cop out to a stat site that is very questionable to begin with.

Biggest Priority this offseason is locking this guy up.

I would rather have Carr than Bowe for sure. Teams overpay for CB’s because of their value… people won’t overpay for Bowe. Best case scenario for me is resign Carr at something like: 5 year 40 million and 18 guaranteed. Then either resign bowe or franchise and trade him. Reggie Wayne will be a free agent as will Pierre Garcon and i’m sure many other good receivers. Frankly i would feel comfortable with Breaston and Baldwin starting and drafting a guy to develop.

We have too many other needs

We already have a very promising starting WR corps, might as well try to keep it together. In this next offseason, we will need a new starting RT, NT, TE to backup Tony Mo, powerback, and maybe even QB. Some of those may get addressed in free agency, but some will have to be drafted. That means we likely won’t be able to take a WR until the mid to late rounds, and we should be doing that anyway to replace Urban and Copper. To me, re-signing Carr and Bowe needs to happen.

Yes

There’s no reason IMO that they can’t work something out for both of them

Sign him. Don't be cheap.
I think we should keep in mind

While we can complain about the Chiefs going after other teams’ free agents, they’ve been pretty good about extending their own guys (DJ, Tamba, Charles, Succop, etc). Hope Carr and Bowe are soon included in that group.

Dammit Joel, I missed that "on" at first glance.

I’m positive you did that on purpose.

Ya but, if they just let one or both walk

i’ll be pissed. I understand one might leave but, you have the tag for a reason. Use it to negoiate or trade. i agree they have been doing a good job getting their guys but, this would set us back some when we are moving forward.

And hopefully you built all this cap space for this reason
Craziness Joel...sheer and utter craziness

like Pioli would have the foresight to keep enough money to sign all OUR good players who succeeded in OUR system and schemes

the way

some of these guys that are talking above me, I’m surprises no NFL teams have shown interests in hiring them to become their GM….. /s
Truth is, we don’t know the real financial numbers behind the Chiefs as a organization. Isn’t 2012 the year where 98-99% of the salary cap have to be spent according to the new CBA?

No, that is 2013.

Although you would think they would get a jump start, so they don’t have to pay a bunch of players next year who they may not want to.

They never HAVE to pay anybody. Any shorted amount is forfeit to the league.
so if they miss the floor by 10 mil,

they pay the league 10 mil?

That's my understanding from discussions last year.

Second hand knowledge, though, I haven’t read the CBA myself. But I’ve heard/read that whatever amount they are under the cap goes to the league to be used for ? So there’s not really a penalty for underspending, and I could see teams doing that rather than locking themselves in to player contracts that they don’t like.

oh man, that sucks

i was hoping the floor would help us out this offseason. if we could back-load the contracts. Pay less in 2012 and more in 2013

Well, it still takes away the "cheap" argument.

If Pioli doesn’t sign whoever, we’ll know that it’s because he didn’t like the value and not that he’s just saving money.

that's a good point

i’ve been on the cheap bandwagon the last few days, but you do have a point.

That's a good point

and you can bet that new contracts will be structured accordingly

Epic Fail that We're at this pt with Carr

Bowe, i can see, just franchise tag him, not that big of deal. But Carr is ridiculous, someone could way over pay for him and he’s gone. If chiefs had taken care of this already, wouldn’t be an issue.

They could franchise Carr too.
I believe teams can only franchise one player per season
No, I meant instead of Bowe.
Gotcha
takes 2 to tango

if you were carr, wouldnt you want to get maximum value for yourself? millions of dollars at stake MILLIONS

exactly why take care of this before he hits free agency

they knew he is a very good CB for years, why wait until he’s a free agent? Like Joel said, they did do the right thing with flowers, jc et al, but why didn’t they do this with Carr too?

i wonder if they tried to cheap out and low ball him just because of where he was drafted. he has played about as well as flowers so the compensation should be in the ball park.

completely agree..

but we don’t know whats going on behind closed doors. my guess is that they have tried to negotiate with him and nothing has come to fruition. personally I would take Carr over flowers b/c flowers can be inconsistent and is injury prone. its hard to dedicate that much cap room to one position on the field. AND i would franchise Carr over Bowe. we have a deadly CB tandem right now, i hate to go messing with that. Put that in with our developing pass rush and it makes it hell for offensive coordinators to game plan for us. I think receivers are easier to come by and easier to be replaced in a system.

If I were Carr I wouldn't have signed either...

Posted below before seeing this thread. I think Carr (and his agent) knew going into this year that there would be demand for his services, so they’ve purposefully not signed to drive the price up. The demand (and contracts) for good cornerbacks has steadily risen the past year, and with more money freed up (theoretically) for veterans it makes financial sense to try to create a bidding way.

3

I assume Carr has an agent. Hali’s agent seemed to be the guy who held that deal up.

If I was the agent...

I would have pushed Carr to test the waters….More money for me. If Pioli offered my client a contract before he was a free agent I would have told my client (He is just trying to low ball you).

you risk injury or bad year if you wait until FA though
Carr could have said he wanted to wait til the end of the year

and he proved he was worth bringing back and deserving of a nice contract. Remember BFlo signed a new deal at the beginning of the year and then went out and got raped for 2 straight games

Then why was he making the universal sign for "pay me" after big plays
Just because someone waits to negotiate don't mean they don't want to get paid
Hali was franchised before he signed a long term deal.

I’m just sayin’…

so then bowe's a FA

and the WR corp goes from a strenght to a big hole if he goes.

Translation:

“You guys should have paid me before the raiders gave Stanford Routt that ridiculous contract. No way am I making less money than a guy who has half my talent.”

I’m starting to think that we can expect either Carr or Bowe (maybe both) to be on different teams next year.

Shouldn't be both with franchise tag

tagging a WR isn’t that expensive as CB

what I like about Carr (and Flowers) is how they've become a "unit" on the field ... and how they prepare before the games AS a unit

certainly hoping he’s with the Chiefs for a long time to come … and yeah, Bowe as well

Flowers' contract will probably be the ceiling

I THINK it’s safe to say that Carr can’t reasonably ask for or expect more money than Flowers got. I believe Flowers got $50.6 for 6 years, $22 guaranteed? If he wants more, I think they’ll let him walk.

Another comparison would be Cromartie, since he is a good second corner. He signed for $32 for 4 years, $14 guaranteed.

So maybe $35/5, $20 guaranteed? I think that would be reasonable. Thoughts?

I think I wish I was a CB in the NFL
I wish I was a practice squad member.

What you talking bout?

Those guys make peanuts though

I think it’s like $5k per week…something like that

peanuts sound good when you're living off peanut shells
well, it's all realative, right ups?

as for us ‘common folk’, well it builds character, right? :(

Yeah, that's just terrible.

What would I do with $20,000.00 a month…?

Spend $20,000.00 a month?
sorry, I thought that's less than what the "common man" earns

signed – Mitt Romney

I'd love to make $5000 a week

When you have to live off of $5000 every four months

Look what he says.
… I will be in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform…

I ignore both sets of ellipses.

I approve of this line of thinking.
Cough up the cash, Clark
Not since Lewis and Ross, have we had such a great corner back tandem. Don't mess it up pay the man!
Although Hasty - Carter was awesome too
This is true

That was a great Tandem.

Just pay them and get on with it.

I wish we had some new news. I love to hear about this, but honestly As a true Chief fan I want both of them back and just wish that the Chiefs brass as we call them would just get this done so it’s one less thing we have to worry about. Pay BRANDON CARR.

Our defensive secondary is getting there.

Next year we have the chance to not just be scary good, but dominant, ass-kicking scary good. In order to do so, we need to retain Brandon Carr whatever the cost. It is obvious he wants to be in KC, so pay him what is fair for that position. Then, let’s get this offense on track and make a Super Bowl run!!!!!!

new england moved on without samuel and hobbs, who are very much like flowers/carr....

differernce is carr will last in the nfl if healthy, hobbs had those issues, but put up identical numbers in a 16 game season.

i would hope carr gets his money, its a mistake that we even have 2 big time players and 1 tag as is….

and those mentioning “at least we pay our own”…yes….pioli has paid dj and charles and hali and flowers, but my issue with that is simply the lack of free agent activity allows for signing our own talent that we draft…..carr is one of those players, or should be, he gets along with our secondary, take him out, and there is just another freakin hole on our defense that will need to be plugged, or we find ourselves hoping somehow someway jalil brown is ready….

sigh

NE is last in the league this year against the pass

and their secondary has gotten worse every year since those guys have left. I really wouldn’t call that moving on. They have basically turned into the Colts. All offense and no defense.

You become your enemy.
king, re-read what i said. and realize, that I am PrO signing carr....

the pats made a Huge mistake letting samuel and hobbs walk

hobbs had almost identical numbers to carr in his last season in new england, where he was traded on his last year of his deal

the comparison is made because the pats DID move on, does that mean that it was successful? no…it just means they let samuel go and didnt pay him, and they traded hobbs….off a 40 tackle, 3 pick, 14 pd season….identical to carr

just saying…the mistake made once by the pats may be getting replicated here

where did I defend the pats pass d?

seriously…..

fyi, pioli was on the pats during said mistake....its like people seem to forget this when i bring up a hobbs carr comparison
In fact that just Reminded me The Last time.....

We had a secondary this good was when we had

J. Hasty, D. Carter, R. Tongue, and J. Woods 1997 Chiefs

B. Flower, B. Carr, E. Berry, K. Lewis Current Chiefs

KEEP THESE FOUR TOGEHTER

I'm not sure how long you have been watching the Chiefs

But the best secondary was Ross, Lewis, Cherry, and Burress.

Those were some badass days.

I used to have this poster up in my room with that entire D (Smith, D.Thomas, Simien, Saleamua, Maas, and your aformentioned secondary). They were all war-painted up and (at least according to poster) has some name which I can’t remember.

They were some sick D. It was never a matter of IF the turnovers/Sacks would happen, but WHEN.

Believe it was "The Tribe"
Get this done Pioli.

We have too many holes to fill as is. The last thing we need is adding another one to it. Got to spend that money somewhere.

Takes two to tango...

There is NO financial incentive for Mr. Carr to sign now. He (or at least his agent) knows that there will be a bit of a bidding war for his services, with good cornerbacks being highly sought after. It may ultimately work out for the Chiefs, but if it were me I’d certainly test the market to drive up the final contract.

He said in Wright's interview that he's "curious" to see what the rest of the league thinks of him.
I would rather have Carr over Bowe...

Carr has quietly became one of solid cb for the Chiefs. I always stress this; the defense wins championship so if it came down to it, I would rather the Chiefs tag Carr than Bowe.

This defense is almost a complete unit for 2012…if Pioli plays the offseason just right like last year, drafting wisely and sign the right FA for right price, they can be very scary under the guide of new Head Coach Romeo who will keep calling the plays while retaining most of the defense staffs. I believe we won’t miss Bowe if they fix the line on both sides first because the war is won in the trenches.

We have to keep both

You take out Bowe, and you’ve got Breaston and Baldwin, that’s not that good. Add Bowe and you’ve got something. i don’t know if i can chose between the two, have to have both.

If we get to keep both then I will consider this off season a success on that alone.

However, we have to face the possibility that KC can only keep one of them because of one franchise tag. If they tag Carr and let Bowe walk, we should be fine as long as the line is addressed. With better Oline, any rb can run behind it (think LJ) and with better pass protection, Cassel wouldn’t have to tuck his tail and play dead whenever he see any pressure. With Moeaki coming back, along with Breaston and Baldwin, the offense will be very slow but keeping the Chiefs defense fresh….they are playing solid without Berry already.

Bowe has loudly become an elite NFL receiver.

Letting him walk means we’re hoping Baldwin can become an elite WR and that guys like Jeremy Urban can somehow become productive.
While in the secondary we have an elite CB opposite of Carr not to mention a very good safety in Lewis and maybe an elite safety in Berry.
Losing Carr hurts our secondary…losing Bowe is almost a death blow to our WR corp.
Just for the record, I don’t want to lose either…we need to sign both (or use the tag on one).

CBs are isolated on opposite sides of the field. Flowers' presence doesn't help Carr's side at all.

On the other hand, Berry coming back should help coverage.

On the other other hand, any receiving threat improves the passing game as a whole. Moeaki should be back next season, as well as Charles who is a big threat in the passing game.

agree to disagree

Having an elite corner like flowers most certainly helps Carr in my opinion…especially since he is a very good corner himself. QB’s are forced to throw into very good coverage because they are avoiding “shut down” coverage on the other side of the field. This results in a much higher chance of INT’s.
Also in 2010 the Chiefs finished 30th in the league in passing (2,968 yds). This year they lost Charles and Moeaki…and Cassel and finished 25th in the league (3,080 yds) and improved their passing numbers. In addition, they only threw the ball 25 more times this year than the 2010. This tells me that Charles and Moeaki are not real difference makers in the passing game. Certainly they are more talented than what we were left with for the 2011 season, but the fact is Bowe makes the passing game go. Finishing in the bottom 7 for passing is not ok. It is a glaring weak spot for this offense and has been for a long time. That’s why if I have to choose between Carr and Bowe, I choose Bowe.

it should be easy, if he wants to be back. the money should work itself out.

+1

That ^ sounds a lot like another way of saying this:

If everything works out the way, you know, that it should I will be in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform

we saved money for this very reason…unless he wants out, no reason to low ball one of our own.

Both Carr and Bowe are heading

into their first contract post draft….and with the new CBA, more money is available to veterans. They are playing positions where many teams will overpay for their services and this is most likely their last contract in the NFL, but definitely their last big contract. If I were them, I would look for the best deal as well.

They'll both be back
Teams are desperate for corners in a heavy passing league

Nnamdi Asomugha got 5 years $60 mil. We need to go 5 years $50 mil (20 guaranteed). So he’s close to Flowers but not quite as close.

WE HAVE THE $$$$$$$$$$

Non-Exclusive????

Can they not franchise Bowe and then hit CARR with a non-exclusive franchise tag. If someone offers to sign him for more we can then match the contact and keep him or let him walk and get 2 first rounders.

Do i have something wrong? Cause if not I think that’s pretty awesome. Essentially it means:

A) we sign them if we can
B) lock bowe up cause CARR is worth more on open market. If someone grabs CARR we save 10 million a year and get 2 first rounders. Use the cap room to pick up a corner in FA. Use the pics for another Corner or line man or trade em both and get QB in the top 5.

Or do you only get one franchise tag exclusive or not?

One of the other.
Sign Bowe, non-exclusive CARR

So then Sign Bowe. if his attitude is okay. Send him to catching Camp with Tony G.

Tag CARR if he is being a dick. Let someone else overpay him. Take the two first rounders and trade them both for top5 and get us a god damn QB OF THE FUTURE.

Brown – it will be job to step and we will pay you later, okay, bro?

Didnt we tender Carr last offseason?

Don’t think you can do that 2 years in a row…

nvm, i get what ur saying now

And yeah, you can only franchise 1 or the other

If this doesnt get done then Jalil Brown better be one hell of a baller.
personally

i think that this part of his quote “but at the end of the day it’s going to be my decision to make” is rather telling.

He didn’t say “hey the ball is in Pioli’s court, we’ve told them what we want”

so just to be different I’m gonna say “C’MON CARR, take the $$ and stay”

:)

Dude sounds like his heels are dug in and he's waiting to go home (Detroit)

Fuck you Gunther.

If Carr isn't signed by Pioli, we should solicit the left wing looney squad, OWS

to Occupy Pioli’s House. Same goes for Bowe.

Or the Right Wing Looney Squad

of Tea Partiers (do they know how to party?).

yanno, just to keep it balanced :)

I dont recall any tea parties taking a crap on cop cars.

I have seen OWS pics of such activitiy. Depositing a load in Piolis living room would be fitting. Ya got to go, ya got to go, you know what I mean? :D

Get enough people together and there's always going to be outliers that have swung so far into their own orbits

that the media LOVES to use as examples of the whole. But I’d laugh my arse off if he doesn’t re-sign Carr and someone were to do this – oh and get a picture taken to prove it :)

Carr better

not forget where he came from and get a big head now. I wonder if he was on anyone else’s radar when we took him out of Grand Valley.

When some players are drafted in the late rounds

they feel disrespected (like Bart Scott) and feel they have to switch teams and get that big payday to prove they are not a system player.

Not sure how Bart Scott fits into this analysis

He went to the same system as he followed his DC from Baltimore to New York. Hard to prove you are not a system player when you go to the same system

He’s a franchise player. Pay the man!!!

agreed, pay him and let’s draft o line and that rb from mississippi state, and the nt from memphis

if you don't even know there names that is never a good sign
Their...

And what would you do if the Saints and Chiefs played eachother? Would your head explode?

I would pick the Chiefs

A: Because the Chiefs are my hometown
B’ Saints have already won a SB and about to win another
C; I already went crazy , balls out when the Saints won(people at the bar looked at me funny) and would love to relive that moment again with KC

Especially when everyone else will be a Chiefs fan celebrating with you.

When (not if, when) the Chiefs get to another Superbowl, I’m going to go to KC for it. That’s going to be a wild day in KC!

I love KC

But, I was made fun of in mid school when I wore my saints xxl t ( remeber those) Guess what, I wore it the very next weak , because I don’t give a f**k. I do and say what I want no mater how popular/unpopular it may be

Keep the probowler.

Carr aint shit. Well, he’s alright now but in years past, I remember screaming at the t.v. “Turn your head around!”

Flagged for dumb.

Lol, gee thanks!

(as I walk away mumbling under my breath)

Its just

Carr has never wowed me. Actually, he’s pissed me off more then he’s ever made me happy. No stats to justify my opinion this time, just my “feelings” about him.

ok pioli franchise this guy

Talk about a polite way to say I don’t want to be here. Remember, he was the last guy to sign his RFA tender last year

Dont think anyone has talked about this...

One benefit to having a DC like RAC was that you could "plug N play quite a few “average” players who excel or come very close in his systems.

Probably the biggest and best example are DE’s like Shaun Smith, but I really think cornerback meets this bill as well. Was Ty Law ever at the same level after leaving NE?

Every good coach has at least one position like this. For Herm it was secondary, he could get more out of a guy than other coaches. For RAC I think its all positions on defense.

Having said that, I like Carr, but we can get an average guy to do a really good job with RAC as DC. Why pay top dollar for CB’s who are only gonna help just a wee bit more?

Also, RAC is now HC, so it remains to be seen if he will have the same impact with these players, but I think it will. I see virtually 0 dropoff in play from these guys.

On top of that consider that Eric Berry will be back next year and Kendrick Lewis will help with any WR’s lined up on our number 2 corner.

I just dont see a big return on our investment at this particular position by paying top dollar. I see a much better return if we invest in other spots, like the OL, DL, and QB positions.

Carr is a smart guy.

He knows that this team was three victories away from the playoffs this year and with all the major players returning to the team next year, on top of the Broncos probably not being so good next year because of winning the division and the inconsistency of the Chargers and Raiders, he knows this team has a good shot of bouncing back and winning the division. The defense might be a top 5 D next year with Crennel being the head coach, so why not come back?

3 victories away, huh?

by my feeble mathematics skills, i count….one.

Yeah, a win against the Raiders would have put them in.
bwahahahahaha...

Maybe he tuned out after the Jets game. Try one PLAY away from the playoffs dude…

Brent Grimes, Terrell Thomas, Cortland Finnegan>Brandon Carr

and they are all Free Agents.

SIGN HIM UP!!!!

He deserves a similar contract to what Flowers got, no questions asked, he is bigger, more physical and is easily as good as Flowers was the past year and a half. We lose him and it is a set back in our excellent secondary (with Berry).

Not Flowers kind of MONEY!

Thats asking too much to have 2 DB get paid that kind of money. DJ, Flowersm JC and Tamba all resigned because they WANT to be a Chief. If his heart isnt w/ the Chiefs best he goes, i want guys who take pride in putting on that uniform and not for the money. He most def deseves a raise no doubt but jus be fair bout it. Plus ive become a legit fan of Arenas and he has big plays in him too, he shut down elite wr wes welker all game against the PATS.
