Good morning! We have a light day of Kansas City Chiefs news. I hate the offseason. Anyway, here's your news. Enjoy.
Words like honesty, integrity and accountability were used by Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt and General Manager Scott Pioli to describe Romeo Crennel earlier this week, but Crennel filled those words with meaning during Todd Haley's final months, weeks and days as Chiefs head coach.
Despite his deep-down desire to one day lead an NFL team again, Crennel was fiercely loyal to Haley though an often-times tumultuous 2011 season. And he stayed loyal until the plug was pulled on Haley's tenure as head coach last month.
The Romeo Rules from The Mothership
You can go ahead and add Brian Daboll's name as a possible replacement of Bill Muir as offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs heading into the 2012 season. Daboll was most recently with the Miami Dolphins as offensive coordinator and has experience with new Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Romeo Crennel, from their time in New England together.
NFL Coaching Search: Brian Daboll Becomes Possible Choice For Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator from SB Nation Kansas City

Kansas City stifled the Packers just two weeks after Green Bay invaded MetLife Stadium and piled up 29 first downs, 449 yards and 360 passing yards in a 38-35 defeat of the Giants. Rodgers threw four touchdowns against the Giants for the second time in less than a year to lead the Packers to a victory that was not secured until Mason Crosby kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired.
The Giants have been candid in saying this week they have studied the Chiefs-Packers game to see how Kansas City succeeded where so many teams came up short.
KC Laid Out Blueprint from The Giants Beat
Schottenheimer coached the Kansas City Chiefs for a decade, and his boss for those 10 seasons was Carl Peterson, an advisor to Ross who tried to recruit Fisher to Miami.
Schottenheimer said Friday that he spoke with Peterson just last week about the possibility of resuming an NFL career that spanned 30 years. Schottenheimer also coached Cleveland, Washington and San Diego but has been out of the league since 2006.
"I told Carl I was going to make an effort to get back into the NFL, and left it at that," Schottenheimer said. "We haven't talked since. Notwithstanding the fact I'm 68, my energy level is very, very high, and I have the same drive and motivation I've always had."

I'd like to see Marty come back
i don’t think it will be with teh dolphins, just seems like the bucs are a better fit for him
Arrowhead25 - January 14, 2012
Not sure about that
Miami’s defense seems more in line with Marty. Marty is a 3-4 guy — not sure he runs a Tampa 2 defense, which would mean big changes to a defense that’s already pretty good.
Seems to me Miami is a better fit for Marty, Player & Management wise…
Chief_Elmo - January 14, 2012
marty will run a 3-4 or 4-3 and do it well
kcguy - January 14, 2012
I am advice for you Romeo.............
no Daboll please his offense sucks and we as Chiefs’ fans want no more sucky offense!
LadyChief - January 14, 2012
How does Daboll's offense suck, Lady?
I’m legitimately curious. They hung 38 on us at home, with Cassel’s brother from another mother at quarterback…in fact they did that to a LOT of teams this year.
I’m not necessarily disagreeing, I just want to hear your thoughts is all.
go_saleaumua - January 14, 2012
It bothers me that he was OC when RAC was at Cleveland............
of course he had no decent QB at Cleveland
LadyChief - January 14, 2012
then he'd feel right at home with Cassel
zing!

He wasn't RAC's coordinator. Never once.
He called plays for Mangini (which would be hell for anyone), and has been solid to good in Miami.

I wish we would have got Marty back and Romeo as DC. Bring in a awesome OC,(HUGH JACKSON),sign Bowe and Carr. SUPERBOWL!!!!!

Someone has to explain to me
all this love for Huge Action. I suppose he put together a decent offense in Oakland, but the guy still seems like a mediocre coach. He said and did goofy shit all year with Oakland (seemed like more this year at least) and in the end still couldn’t his team to win when it mattered the most.
The only thing I would like about it is getting to say Huge Action a lot more during his tenure.
Maybe (probably) it’s just the anti-Raider in me that makes me say – I’d prefer we take our chances elsewhere. Saunders gets a free pass cause he was here first. But Hue? Meh.

LadyChief - January 14, 2012
Al Saunders is the sensible choice
if he wanted to return.

AL saunders
he has been in KC twice that I know of once with Marty and again with dick vermeil… I think Marty tied his hands a bit but with Vermeil both in St louis and KC he was realy good . I would like to see him back in KC
Battle AXE - January 14, 2012
but he wasn't OC with Marty ... he WAS the OC for Uncle Dick
upamtn - January 14, 2012
So help me figure this out - from what I remember from Saunders
His offenses were very complex – and I think I found a picture of his playbook on the googlenets

I remember lots of motion (which didn’t seem to fool anybody by the end of his tenure) and it was outside run heavy (lots of tosses and sweeps – but maybe that had more to do with who was running) with intermediate & deep passes lots of screens. Play action was also heavily featured.
So my honest question is – what QB would be best to run that system? I can tell you for sure that I’d rather have Orton running that system than Cassel.
Otherwise I think our personnel would fit that decently well – especially running to the outside with our stout blocking WRs. It would seem to fit Jamaal and Dexter well. The only thing I would fear is the transition – can all these guys pick this offense up quickly? It seems like it would be a considerable enough departure from the current system that it might be a slow transition.
Ochophosphate - January 14, 2012
The only thing I would like to see Cassel run, is out of town.
Mr.Pibbs - January 14, 2012
Not sold on Saunders
I think a guy like Jeff Davidson who has worked closely with RAC in Cleveland would be the best choice.
He ran a two back system in Carolina and did a good job at it. We need that two back system here….especially if we get TR in the draft or anyone to compliment JC.
If I were Crennel I would get an OC that I could trust and I could depend on. Davidson fits the bill
Matt_Grbac - January 14, 2012 via mobile
his playbook, that's about the size of it, yes
ages ago, sometime in the 70’s, one of the Kings (our long gone basketball franchise) wandered over for a tour of Arrowhead and came away muttering about the size of the playbook he saw … the one the Kings used was like a thick magazine, the one the Chiefs used was bigger than a telephone book
what Saunders had … well, one can only imagine … definitely a stretch the field offense, and w/o question Orton would be better than Cassel, but a lot of pulling and motion on the OLine just as now with the ZBS, but we need guys like DeCastro who can pull and block while in motion
upamtn - January 14, 2012
Aren't you just setting yourself up for disappointment when you go all-in with one draft pick, ups?
Like you did last year with Sherrod, it just seems you aren’t giving yourself much leeway to accept any other pick that way and will just pit yourself more against the decisions of the team.
I like Decastro, and would be just fine with us drafting him, but I’m definitely open to other players and strategy possibilities too. Like last year, I really wanted Taylor, but I was pretty pleased with the trade back, addressing a major need in WR, and using that extra pick on the 3rd on a 1st round talent that fell. I know you have talked exhaustively about your displeasure with Baldwin, but does that anything to do with the fact the team took him over Sherrod?
Is Decastro the only thing that would please you? You have made your stance against drafting a QB in the first. Would a front seven player not work for you? How about another WR or maybe a CB, if we lose Bowe or Carr? Just wanting to get some open dialog with you about other possibilities in the draft, since we know what you want the most
RememberDelaney37 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
if we lose Carr (please, no!) I'd not be against the best CB on the board at our 1st Round pick
WR? meh … a bit less urgency on that if (big if?) Baldwin can “be that guy” for us
also depends on who and what positions we fill in Free Agency (if any of those happen before the draft, of course) … and I’m still not totally pleased that we took Baldwin over Sherrod (the thumb fiasco notwithstanding) I think Pioli’s doing a “scattergun approach” to rebuilding the team … adding talent to be sure, but not with a focus on any one particular area (OLine, for example, is an area that takes more time for players to develop, and I’m of the belief that you build a team from the inside out: ie, start with the lines and do it thru the draft if at all possible)
there are indeed other possibilities in the draft … DeCastro, being the best at his position (by a longshot) and addressing a need and “completing” that Oline Interior group is my preference, yes (he’s actually considered “Top Ten” talent, FWIW)
now granted we could get maybe Reiff, or Martin instead, but neither of them is “the best” at OT (granted either one would likely start at RT and that’s not a horrible thing) but if you can get the best, the cream of this year’s crop at a position of need …
that’s my viewpoint on DeCastro
upamtn - January 14, 2012
So you would rather Pioli wears every position along the o-line in the draft and free agency before he addresses any other need?
And assuming so, we are ignoring the moves made that have pretty much addressed each position of need along the line, such as signing Lilja and Wiegmann, along with drafting Asamoah and Hudson?
I think something you tend to fall into the trap that sense some moves didn’t exactly work out for the best (keeping Wiegmann and Richardson as starters), you speak like Pioli has done absolutely nothing to address those needs initially.
Not many people could complain about the o-line moves made in the offseason considering their level of play last season. Say what you will about releasing Waters, but the team rightfully needed to get Asamoah on the starting interior, and Lilja was arguably one of the top two linemen last season. Wiegmann’s rapid decline (not unlike Cassel’s) was a bit unexpected, so Lilja and Asamoah suffered because of it, as would Waters would have as well, and could reasonably argue suffered more considering his advanced age as well.
The o-line just isn’t in as bad of shape as you make it sound, and it has definitely been addressed pretty thoroughly through Pioli’s tenure.
With that says, Pioli himself stated he wanted to see better play from the line this season. Most can wager he is talking about the RT position, along with some interior play likely, which should improve with the addition of Hudson. So I just wonder who the odd man out would be for you if we drafted Decastro?
RememberDelaney37 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
He also brought in Gaither.
Who couldn’t find the field in KC, but did well with San Diego. Yeah, it’s not like he’s been ignoring the line. But as he himself said, more needs to be done.
Tarkus - January 14, 2012
how the hell did we cut gaithers
one answer haley
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
Wait!
I thought Pioli made all the personnel moves with absolutely no input from his coaches and just shoved the players he wanted down his staff’s throats (please ignore Muir’s full media field day on why Gaither was released, and Haley’s likely signing off on the decision)
:-)
RememberDelaney37 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
I see what you did there.
Tarkus - January 14, 2012
Ok, I'm done, no Haley/Pioli talk here
For any of Pioli’s faults, he has been damn good about identifying the team needs in the offseason and addressing them as best he can, o-line included.
I have no doubt he sees our QB play needs improving, so keys just hope we are in a position to do that, be it in the draft, or free agency (Orton, Flynn)
RememberDelaney37 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
yeah lets cut oline help when we have none
one more haley move to screw the chiefs. Lets keep palko on the roster and cut gaithers
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
(sorry about all the auto-correct mistakes. I get going, and I don't catch all of them)
RememberDelaney37 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Lilja was "ok" ... Wiegs was clearly a temp move, though I was surprised Pioli allowed a "former Chief" to walk back into Arrowhead ;-)
I have NO issues with Asamaoh or Hudson (remember Asamoah was the year before, along with Lilja and Wiegs, both of whom are stopgaps) and yes, I’d have preferred keeping Waters instead of Lilja (what was THAT all about? and don’t tell me AGE because Wiegs is older than either of those guys, and Pioli grabbed another stopgap, Kelly Gregg, who’s the same age as Waters)
right now, I see 3 OLine spots that need to be addressed (although with the assumption that Hudson starts at C in 2012 that leaves 2 spots) … nonetheless, OLine takes longer to develop players, so the longer you wait the longer it takes to get a solid group in place … and, I see the interior 3 spots of the line as a “group” or an entitiy in itself, making the LG-C-RG positions a crucial point of need, and in my mind more important that RT
if RT can just force the defenders to go OUTSIDE on a passing play, the QB is going to generally have time to find someone IF the inside is solid … regardless of who we have at QB, if that inside group is a stone wall on pass protection, even BRich (with help from TE if needed) can hold the fort long enough
on running plays, you want that interior group to be strong yet mobile (especially in our ZBS) so you need guys who can pull and can block “in space” as well as get that initial push in the Red Zone (something we sorely lack right now)
in my mind, if we do take DeCastro he’s the immediate starter at LG in place of Lilja (who becomes our #1 LR/RG swing backup) and gives us Albert – DeCastro – Hudson – Asamoah – BRich (and if we find someone in second round or free agency to plug in there, fine by me) … and that interior group should be solid for 10 years (and in 5 years people would be talking about our OLine having all the Pro Bowlers instead of the Saints Oline)
upamtn - January 14, 2012
I think kelly gregg comes back for one more year
didn’t he sign a 2 year deal with kc
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
One, I think.
And he’s given hints that he’s about done.
Tarkus - January 14, 2012
My concern there
Is that now you would have a rookie-first year starter-2nd year starter along the interior. Lilja is still in his prime, and I’m betting with Hudson likely to take over at center (although you have to wonder if that is even accurate considering he hasn’t played center in a regular season game yet), the team probably won’t be inclined to take veteran presence and leadership like Lilja away, at least right away.
The o-line went through some big change last year with the release of Waters, moving Lilja to the left, and adding Asamoah. You yourself said the continuity of this group is important, so why make even more change that may not be necessary? Again, we all assume Hudson will take over at center, and now we want to change Lilja out for a rookie, along with possibly changing RT? Not doing so well on the continuity
RememberDelaney37 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
we didn't seem to have issues with our rookie starter at Safety last year ... that Berry kid, remember?
Hudson has been projected at Center since before we drafted him (ie, too small for OG position, and he did play C in college before moving to OG there)
as for continuity, how many times do we want to change it? every year? get it established now and be done with it … and DeCastro certainly projects as a day-one starter at his position, and yes, I do belive there’s something to be said for that continuity in a “group” such as OLine … read the link to that article I posted in fanshots yesterday about the Saints OLine (if you haven’t already)
and as for Lilja, not saying he’s “washed up” but DeCastro … well, think about it: is Berry (as a rookie) better than McGraw (a seasoned veteran) … which one should start? if the answer is Berry (and it should be the answer) and it applies to Safety, why shouldn’t the same logic apply to OLine? get the best and use the best, as much as possible
upamtn - January 14, 2012
Fair enough point on starting a rookie
But it still doesn’t change the fact that by taking Lilja out for Decastro, you are replacing the veteran with the most experience for a rookie. I think that Decastro is clouding your judgment on Lilja, who doesn’t really need upgrading at this point. Now whether the staff determines that they need more strength for power blocking from the interior, I’ll let them be the judge, but I wonder how much is due to Wiegmann’s ineptitude this season, and not so much Lilja.
RememberDelaney37 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
they had no qualms about replacing the veteran Waters, did they?
and ultimately they replaced him with Asamoah … who, I admit, was pretty good …
I’d still take Waters over Lilja … said it then and again now … and since you mentioned Wiegs, great guy and amazing streak, but why is he in there? again, yes he has EXPERIENCE but so does Jeff George … maybe we should have gotten him instead the younger Kyle Orton
upamtn - January 14, 2012
seriously, you're making all the wrong points here ... and defending the indefensible
I could have seen them keeping Waters and cutting Wiegs, that would have made sense … but Waters was then and is still better than Lilja (and he’s proven it with the Patriots)
it’s time for the young studs … it’s time for Hudson and it’s time we get someone like DeCastro and get that interior done once and for all
upamtn - January 14, 2012
Lilja was MUCH better than Waters last season
Again, with the transition from RG to LG and Wiegmann being as close to retirement as you can get, Lilja struggled some this season. Maybe he isn’t quite the LG that Waters was or could have been this year, but there is no reason to believe he won’t return to form with one season under his belt in moving back to LG and improvement from the center position. You can’t really argue against Lilja being younger and was better than Waters last season.
Again, you are assuming we will have to change Lilja out again sooner than later, which really isn’t anymore than your bias opinion for Waters and Decastro. No need to mess with continuity of a sound line anyhow than necessary, and moving Lilja out definitely isn’t necessary

niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
Yep, Al Saunders is one of the most famous proponents of
the Vertical Offense, or the Air Coryell offense. It tends to include a strong running game (Charles), a #1 WR who can stretch the field and catch jump balls (Bowe), a good receiving TE (Moeaki) to attack the middle of the field and a FB (McClain) who fills the role of lead blocker and is a final option as outlet receiver. It is run almost exclusively from the Pro Set (TE, 2WR’s, HB, FB), but these things tend to morph over time as you use the talent available (Breaston and McCluster).
It would appear that KC has the players in place to implement his offense.
You might recognize versions of this offense in San Diego and Oakland as Hue Jackson also runs it. It is also favored by Cam Cameron, Mike Martz and Tom Moore, although the Martz variation may not be as recognizable. I think it’s what the Bears are trying to do with Jay Cutler.

powercat12 - January 14, 2012
if tebow wins today what will u guys do. ????????
The hype this guy is getting is unbelievable.
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
I'll watch tebow against houston in the AFC champ
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
btw I think it's just ESPN/NFL hype
more hype=higher ratings=more commercials=more cash
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
chiefshero , they won't take down Big hood and brady too many weapons
don’t have the fire power to hang with the pats
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
you asked me "if tebow wins today what will u guys do. ????????"
I told you, I’ll watch tebow against houston…
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
I know
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
i answered and now you're telling me that tebow's going to lose?
I’m confused
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
will u turn your tv on next week if tebow wins
every channel got that dude on tv. I haven’t checked the wheather channel yet, maybe that will be a safe tv channel if tebow wins. All the hype is unbelievable on tebow
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
i rarely have time to watch tv. I'm actually working right now
just waiting for the boss to read my memo and tell me to do more research
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
i think the donkeys are getting 13.5 pts againest the pats
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
depends on how the broncos play
if they play run heavy—i agree
if pass happy (assuming tebow this week=tebow last week), 21+ points
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
Shoot myself?
What’s the waiting period on handguns these days?
Tarkus - January 14, 2012

Chiefshero - January 14, 2012

Tarkus - January 14, 2012

niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012

Tarkus - January 14, 2012

I wonder what lady chief will do.?? I can’t wait to see what the picture diva will do.
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
tebow's saving himself for marriage. sorry lady chiefs
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
I need a parlay where is
craig in calgery at
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
honesttly, I wouldn't be at all upset if the Broncos win today ...
no love for the Patriots, and Brady’s had more than his “15 minutes of fame” … still pissed at the “tuck rule” BS call where the refs STOLE the game from the Raiders
upamtn - January 14, 2012
worse call i've seen in football the tuck rule againest oakland
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
worst than the megatron catch?
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
Other than the fact that it was the right call.
Tarkus - January 14, 2012
Yes i say it is , there no way thats a forward pass by brady
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
if that was a forward pass, I would argue for intentional grounding
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
Intentional grounding
Is throwing the ball away intentionally while in the pocket, to avoid a sack. That’s why it’s legal to spike the ball, because it’s not done to avoid a sack. And Brady wasn’t throwing it away intentionally.
Tarkus - January 14, 2012
correct
he wasn’t throwing it … that’s what you call a fumble
upamtn - January 14, 2012
oh, it clearly wasn't a forward pass ... that wasn't even a question at the time when they did the review in the booth, they KNEW he was tucking it in
the rules section that exists and has that rule, the part about “anytime the QB’s arm is in motion EVEN IF HE’S TUCKING THE BALL IN” … needs to be purged, should have been done the day after that BS call
upamtn - January 14, 2012
IOW it was a good call.
Tarkus - January 14, 2012
now, it was an atrocious call on a clear fumble
upamtn - January 14, 2012
it's like negating a fumble by a RB because he was tucking the ball into his body, so his arm was in motion, therefore it's not a fumble when he's been hit
and THAT is 100% hogwash
upamtn - January 14, 2012
I was with my cousin and he's a big raider fan
He broke his tv after they came up with that call the tuck rule. the game is over if it wasn’t for the tuck rule for NE. You never heard of the tuck rule until the raider pats game. Then u over turn the call on the field for some bs rule that never been called before that game.
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
I can see if brady arm going forward, but that was a BS call
niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
because this is so awesome
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
well, it did go farward, but it was also going DOWN ... far past the point where he was throwing the ball (because he WASN'T) and in the replays you can CLEARLY see he's tucking it away ...
… any RB holding the ball like that, it’s a fumble and that’s that
upamtn - January 14, 2012
but no one wants the raiders in the SB
not even raiders fan
Chiefshero - January 14, 2012
sweet my boss is letting us watch the saints vs 49ers....

Chiefshero - January 14, 2012

niageriannit1 - January 14, 2012
