Matt Cassel and Kyle Orton developed a close relationship in a short amount of time. The two veterans built up a great amount of respect for each other and their ability to work with one another no doubt helped Orton's huddle command and Cassel's leadership role.

According to Kent Babb of the Star, former Chiefs coach Todd Haley believes that the team bugged rooms at the facility and "tampered with" Haley's phone. (The team denies the accusation.)

I wrote an awful lot about the Kansas City Chiefs from 2002 to 2004, when I was columnist at The Kansas City Star. Even now, I'm not sure that people realize just how singular those Chiefs teams were:
2002 Chiefs: first in points, 28th in PA (finished 8-8)
2003 Chiefs: first in points, 19th in PA (made playoffs at 13-3, lost first playoff game)

Those offenses - led mostly by an amazing football player named Priest Holmes - were among the best in NFL history. But those defenses were bad. Staggeringly bad.

Spygate was using a perfectly legal (in the courts) videotape to do something the league found morally reprehensible.
This is talking about secretly taping conversations, which is considered to be an illegal wiretape. There is also the allegations that phones were tapped. These are felonies, and if true, would result in significant jail time.

I work in a pretty fucked up environment myself, so I could kinda see someone recording conversations with there boss.
there is a person in my office ready to throw anyone under the bus and take the blame for things rather then have the buck stop in her office.
My standard operating procedure with her is to send an email to her after every conversation along with my imediate boss.
Having a record of what is said in a conversation eleminates the “it your fault you told me, and I hold a higher position so my word is the truth line.”
But I’ve been around the block a few times.

And he gets ripped for being a micro manager. I call it responsibility and accountability. if he infuses these things into a losing organization, hey i’m all for it. As for using technology to momitor your workforce, why wouldn’t you, you have a responsibilty to earn your money and I am sure that every person in the organization was made aware of that when Pioli took over. The old “the buck stops here”, thing made famous by Harry Truman. I doubt that the Chief’s are committing federal crimes and think that Haley has dropped a bomb on the way out the door as a last act of spite.

I've got no problem with the whole candy wrapper thing.
Nobody should, really. It’s a valid management technique. Though some could argue how effective they think that kind of thing is, but that’s subjective.
I’m not sure what the law is, honestly, on a bug in a conference room for example. If it’s legal, then so what – big deal. A little skeevy for my tastes, but whatever.
But phone tapping is a felony (at least personal phones. Again, I personally don’t know the law pertaining to businesses recording their own phones with or without notifying employees).
If they’ve done anything illegal, they should be kicked square in the nuts for it. And hard.
If they haven’t, then at worst I’d just wrinkle my nose a bit and go, “ewww, shitty management style ya got there” and keep on hoping for wins.

as far as taping in a public facility… there is no issue.
The club could put up video cameras that film and record every square inch of the facilities if they want to (well, aside from the bathroom stalls). People have no legal recourse, because there is no legal expectation of privacy inside the company facility.
If you knew about even a tenth of the times every single day that you were videotaped in public places you might throw a fit as well, but the bottom line is… you have no expectation of privacy and any business has the right to tape their premises if they so choose.
A telecom company might tape every phone call in which a consumer talks to a company representative so that they can evaluate their employees, or keep a record of what was promised to a customer, or both. If the phones inside Arrowhead that are used to discuss business dealings bare the same kind of taping.. it really isn’t all that out of bounds.
Someone wants to be able to evaluate how the business side staff is interacting with customers for reasons of evaluating job performance, and to keep a record of the promises/deals that are made in case it’s ever needed in the future. You have no expectations of privacy while using those company phones.
If, in a review of the tapes, an employee were caught making several phone calls per week to phone sex numbers…… or kiddie porn lines, or to set up dates with “escorts” in exchange for a customer purchasing season tickets….. would anyone decry the use of taping those conversations? Or would the outrage be directed at the person involved in the nefarious activities? My guess would be the latter.
Personal telephones are another matter entirely. And it seems to me that if Haley wanted to know if his phone had been “messed with” or “bugged” it wouldn’t be very hard to get that question answered. I mean.. wouldn’t YOU (if you truly thought it were happening) have taken that phone in somewhere to have it checked out by now? … if not before, at least now AFTER you’d been fired?
So why are we only seeing reports of Haley “thinking” his phone “might” have been messed with? If it had actually happened, wouldn’t we be reading a story about Haley FINDING a bug in his phone. He’ll even if I thought my phone was merely cloned so someone else could listen in… I’d have made some phone calls where I said untrue things (I stole all the pain killers out of the lock up before I left, or I planted a camera in Pioli’s private bathroom and have recording on my laptop of him taking a shit that I’m going to sell to the tabloids) just to find out if someone showed up to check and see if it was true. (to confirm my taping suspension) ?

I walk in the mens room one day and see gum stuck to the urinal that was there the night before.
You know what I do? … I peel the gum off the urinal.
Then.. I mention to my store manager that there was gum stuck to the urinal for over a day, and that no one cleaned it up.. and that he should speak directly with the person responsible for the job.

The point could have been better made by leading by example, rather then sending it down the chain.
Owner yells at manager because it hasn’t been done.
Manager yells at shift leader because it hasn’t been done.
Shift leader yells at day crew member because it hasn’t been done.
Day crew member yells at night crew member because it wasn’t done the previous night.
Night crew member yells at the exact staff member that was supposed to clean the bathrooms because it wasn’t done properly.
yet another day has passed… and the job STILL hasn’t been done. It’s pure idiocy. Had the owner that saw it, and disapproved, just picked it up themselves and then USED that as a motivating point (no one around here is too big to do ANY job.
Everyone needs to work together to make sure we all respect the tiniest of details… just like this wrapper [pulls wrapper out of his pocket] .. The smallest of details matter. Everyone that saw this COULD have picked it up. Everyone assumed it was beneath them, so it never got done….. It’s not beneath me, and I’m your boss… so it’s not beneath you either. Take some pride in your work and your facility and do what needs to be done, regardless of whose job it might be. The guy whose job it was won’t work here for long if they can’t do the work, but the job needs to be done weather they are doing it or not. Just get it done.

1. KC is not going through a rebuilding phase, especially on defense. We’re one year removed from the playoffs and only didn’t make it this year because our coach tanked the season.
2. Carr is already on a potential playoff team and already has a starting role on that team.
3. He is demanding a lofty contract or he would already be re-signed. On the open market with the overwhelming need at CB his contract will only get that much higher.

Pereira is the best, and the NFL dearly misses his leadership.
In my opinion the quality of officiating has dropped, and even more important, the accountablitiy has dropped. Periera segment on NFL Network when he was in charge was the best thing on that channel, answered questions, called out mistakes, and improved every fans understanding of the game.
Fox made a great move getting this guy on their broadcasts.
(And it is probably closer to 6/6 the guys on the field got wrong)

The official was wrong on Sunday
The first Packers fumble that was challenged and was obviously a fumble but not ruled correctly. Pereira got that right and the guy on the field did not.

They didn’t say it was “confirmed” like many have stated. They said there wasn’t conclusive evidence to overturn call. Calf down equals down? If so, I think there was enough question to let it stand as well, even though I would have called it a fumble as well.

My problem with the "stands as called" on that play is that it was called a fumble and down by contact by two different officials
In cases like that there shouldn’t be a call and it should fall solely on the official under the hoods judgement.

Well.
Presumably they go with the person who had the better angle, I’m not sure. But it’s always been the case that different officials saw things different, even long before replay. So a system has always been in place for determining who has the final say.

This could have been so many things that nobody knows about. What if Haley didn’t want Palko in the first place? Maybe he was trying to make a point on why he never wanted him. A lingering question I have about the Babb article...
At the end of the season, Scott Pioli was giving interviews all over the media talking about the Cheifs. He was talking to websites, he was on TV, he was on the radio…it was like the dude had a new book coming out or something. Which leads me to my question…
How on earth was Babb unable to get Pioli for even a comment or quick interview during that period? Pioli seems like he’s talking to anyone who will listen, and Babb can’t track him down at all? The article lets a lot of voices point fingers directly at Pioli, and then comes out right after Pioli’s been giving a ton of interviews. Did Babb actually try to talk to Pioli? He parenthetically says that Pioli “was not made available by the team for this story”…which to me could mean a wide array of things.
I hate beating this dead horse, but this occurred to me last night and has been bugging me since.

Yes. The man started Palko 4 games. I can see sticking with him after a tough MNF against a team still playing, however, he should not have been allowed to play the entire Pitt game much less after that game, especially with Haley spewing how he is always going to play the guy who gives the team the best chance to win. I wasn’t a Haley hater by any means but I am finding it difficult to let go of that. The Palko era was a new low for me as a Chiefs fan.

Cassel was THE quarterback get of the 2009 offseason. People forget he was so sought after that there was talk of Pioli pulling a Hoodie-wink.
He struggled his first year with a new team and a crappy receiving corp.
In 2010, he posted a season 93.0 QB rating, still with a crappy receiving corps.
Then this year, he disappointed with a 76.6 rating and a should-be improved receiving corps.
When exactly should Pioli have fired him? After his first season with a new team and a crappy receiver group? After his second-season Pro Bowl appearance? Or maybe Pioli should have cut him right after the Bills game this year, so that Haley could play Palko for the whole damn season.

I’m aware if all the facts you presented, and you’re right, but what gets to me about all of it is that Cassel is untouchable, and has been since the second he signed a contract. He never had to win the starting job nor has he ever had to worry about any competition.
The problem is that having Matt Cassel does not set us at QB, and that kind of seems to be Pioli’s idea of things.

I was just addressing the point of when Cassel should have been cut. There really hasn’t been a good time until this current offseason…..from a roster standpoint as well as a contract standpoint. Plus, Cassel had/has so little experience that he deserved a shot to develop.

At the end of the Season, Haley was disatisfied with Cassel, and wanted to get QB in the draft or through free agency. Might have even had one in mind. Pioli said he wouldn’t remove cassel, and maybe drafted a qb later in draft then Haley and not the one he wanted, perhaps even Haley was told, you got the QB you wanted see palko.
Perhaps Pioli was talked into Stanzi by his good friend in Iowa, and perhaps Haley didn’t think much of him, or thought he wouldn’t work with our system.
Durring free agency Haley might have even asked for a veterian QB, and is told.. Palko is your guy you will have to work with him.
Perhaps this and other things was a death spiral between the HC and Pioli.
So playing one bad QB that Cassel didn’t think much of, and then losing him, started a new war, and Haley said fine I’ll play my guy.. who he new would not be successful, but would not play Pioli’s new guy who was a slap in Haley’s face. (thats on Haley, but the sitution is on Pioli if this were the case).

He turned a second round draft pick into a pro-bowl performance and playoff appearance. No one is claiming that Cassel has no faults, and if you think Pioli isn’t aware of Cassel’s shortcomings then you’re fooling yourself. Also…he drafted Stanzi, and brought in Orton. He’s clearly willing to try different things at QB. This myth that Pioli is blindly married to Cassel doesn’t make sense, and certainly doesn’t any of the facts of the situation. Did you even watch the Crennel introduction press conferences? There was no bold endorsement of Cassel in any conceivable way.
The inability of fans to observe the facts of the situation points to different people “losing their minds.”

I’m happy to admit Pioli’s mistakes and discuss the pros and cons of many of his decisions. What I’m not going to do is re-post the same ignorant talking points over and over and misrepresent the opinions of others every chance I get.

You can’t tell me that any one of you wouldn’t be happy as larks if you could be playing a role in that Chiefs organization, an organization you claim to be so loyal to as fans. And given the chance you would be as covert as the best Navy Seals.
Look I think we’ve all seen or been part of organizations that allowed the inmates to run the show. It’s not pretty when that comes to an end.
As for strange business behavior, it seems successful businessmen must come by it naturally. Case in point:

Anyway, this guy was high enough in the food chain that he had to attend these corporate meetings that T. Boone would lead. He claimed T. Boone could go off on wild tangents at any meeting. The best was one day when T. Boone got to talking about the blue barber water in the jars that the combs sit in at the country club locker room. He wnated to know where the blue water comes from, who is respoonsible for buying it, how much does it cost, and on and on. So ask yourself what does the blue barber water have to do with oil and gas exploration and mega corporate dealings? Nothing. But as my friend put it, T. Boone was the boss and the blue barber water discussion was his to do with as he wanted, and no one in that meeting said otherwise.

The longer it goes without hearing anything the more I think this is a money issue. I personally would pay him the same as Flowers to keep him here as I feel he is just as valuable. If this team let’s him walk because they don’t want to pay him, I’m jumping on H2E’s bandwagon to go lynch Clark Hunt.

He’s six feet tall and gives KC the option of putting him on bigger wideouts, and/or TE’s if need be. That kind of flexibility is valuable. Flowers is, what, 5’9"? Those three inches can be the difference between a catch and an incompletion or INT.

He is part of a solid young core, pay the man and move on. Bowe is the one I would worry about getting lazy after being paid.

A few points. Take them or leave them. (IMO)
I read all of these stories and coverage. I wanted to voice some of my thoughts on this whole thing. Take them or leave them.
1. Pioli is a micro-manager – It obvoius but it seems like a lot of NFL GM’s run their organization like this. I never liked micro-managers but I have never worked for a GM in the NFL. Could be completely different from corporate america. This attention to detail is probably a good thing.
2. Pioli has an ego – Of course he does. So do alot of other coaches, owners, players, etc. The story about the car space is probably true. But, it might not be as bad as it sounds. Pioli could have easily walked into the building and said whoever has this truck parked in my space better move it or you will not be working here anymore. I could easily see any boss saying something like that. The being called by his last name thing I believe is true but again, it could sound a lot worse than it is. What if this woman was saying it in a disrespectful way? It states Pioli said this after numerous times being called it. Maybe she was saying it in a disrespectful way the entire time? If that was the case, I would be reprimanded by my boss.
3. The candy wrapper – The KC Star article stated this wrapper was laying there the entire week. Pioli kept checking on it through out the week to see if someone threw it away. No one did. He brought it up and said something about it. He was easily using this small candy wrapper as a way to get his point across that things need to change and people need to be held accountable and pay attention to detail. It is a very odd way to get your point across but take it or leave it.
4. The drawing of the blinds – I dont see a problem with this at all. I think this is a good thing. Don’t give anyone or anything an advantage. I will give an example here. With my company our internal information kept being leaked to the newspaper. Someone within the company would keep doing this. Point is, its a large company and you can never really trust anyone completely.
5. Todd Haley’s conspiracy theory – Todd is just a nutball. After reading this I was pleased he is gone. Seriously, our head coach was acting like this? Do I think Pioli was monitoring his coach? Yes I do (what GM wouldn’t). Do I think Pioli did all these things to Haley? No. I will give an example here. My uncle is a very paranoid man. He is very scatter brained. He works for company (under 20 ees) that he was convinced was trying to get rid of him. He was conviced they bugged his phone. He was convinced they broke into his car and bugged it. He was conviced they installed a tracking device on his car. Now, my best friend works for this company too. I asked my friend what he thought. He replied…“that’s your uncle being paranoid. They aren’t doing any of that stuff. He is completely off his rocker.”. My point, Todd Haley is completely paranoid.
6. Monitoring emails – Get over this. Every company watches online traffic. My company has the ability to monitor emails if need be. I even know some people got let go because of emails they were sending (inapproriate and grounds for termination). Again, you never know what people are doing and saying to the competition, etc.
7. Recording conversations – Through the phones? Its illegal. Peter King made a good point about that. I do not think the chiefs are listening in on phone calls. However, they can easily pull a list of who the person called. Any company can do this and I am sure a lot do monitor these calls. What is a worker in a normal company simply talked to friends all day long and didn’t do any work. Do you think the company would let this just go by without addressing it? Of course they wouldn’t. As for the bugged rooms, who knows.
8. Turnover – In any company when a new regime takes over, there is always change that comes with it. Carl Peterson was there a LONG time. 16+ years (I think). A culture was established by Carl Peterson. Pioli wants to change the culture. He will make let people go to change this culture regardless if you are a hard worker. People also get set in their ways. They feel doing the very least to get by in work is the way to go. I think he let people go for all of the above. Culture change, unproductivity, etc. Do I think the comment about anyone over 40 is true? I don’t know. I am surprised at the amount of turnover here but not surprised at all the turnover (make sense?)
9. Overall – Anyway you look at it this story is bad for chiefs football in the public eye. I am concerned of this public opnion. I am also concerned that because of this story it may draw players and coaches away from the chiefs. I am concerned it will cause problems in the locker room. I hope this does not happen and everything works out. As for Pioli, he needs a few more years before my final verdict is made on him as a GM. I do believe he is doing good things player wise and through the draft. But he also made some big mistakes. A few more years will tell. As for Pioli as a boss, I am glad I do not work for him, but if this management style works out in the long run I am all for it.

I notice you didn’t mention current employees afraid to be seen eating lunch together. It still doesn’t sound like a healthy workplace. Personally, I would have a hard time pulling people’s shades down and then berating them with some “we’re all in this together, let’s pick up the litter!” speech. If Pioli thinks secrets are being picked up be secretaries looking out at the field, the rest of the secrecy and paranoia don’t seem out of character.
