On Sunday morning Kent Babb dropped a jaw-dropping story in the Kansas City Star that included a nugget in which former Chiefs coach Todd Haley had indicated to Babb that he felt there were areas of the complex that were bugged and that his personal cell phone had been tampered with.
This obviously took the NFL world by surprise and the league office has responded with a statement issued to multiple outlets, including us (but first reported by Danny Parkins of 610 Sports).
"The Chiefs have notified us that these claims are completely false and no such allegations have been made to our office," the statement reads.
So what we have here is two things. First, another denial by the Chiefs that this occurred, which Babb included in his story. Second, an indication that no complaints of alleged phone bugging or anything like that were ever made to the league office. It's a good point by the league -- if Haley believed this was happening he should have contacted the league office. It's like going to the HR department with complaints -- it needs to be on the record or else it may not matter in the end.
While the alleged phone bugging has been the focal point of the story for many, I think the broader issue is whether and to what extent others thought something like this was even possible. We're all creating our opinion based on the same story with the same amount of information so we'll let you decide how you feel about it.

Oh good lord
Here come 600 comments over deja vu!
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
But we haven't gotten our point across yet
Talking points, talking points, blah blah blah. I hope we get at least four more threads about this so I can clearly show you that my position is the one that is right.
old_school - January 18, 2012
I disagree!
Rabble, rabble, rabble, jargon, jargon, jargon. Idiot, moron, buffoon, Clark, Scott, and even sometimes Deron Cherry. Mock draft, mock draft, freakin’ Sabby, freakin’ Sabby, strange black vans, cameras, and let’s not forgot toilet microphones………………harumph!
severn58 - January 18, 2012
Mock drafts and Sabby don't belong in this thread
That would mean actually talking about football. Shame on you.
old_school - January 18, 2012
Cudos...
I guess only the wise can truley understand the profound humor in your post! Awsome.
David Winton - January 18, 2012
Did someone say Deron Cherry?
Pacific Chief - January 18, 2012
One thing is probably true...........
Pioli is a SOB to work for
LadyChief - January 18, 2012
Or he expects the most outta people
Than the previous regime did. Goes both ways
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
you can do that without being an asshat
LadyChief - January 18, 2012
Or he's just really strict
Which most bosses are and their “asshats” for that. McDonalds is always hiring, warehouses are always hiring.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
Mickey D's hires kids, not adults who need to earn a living and feed their families ...
warehouses don’t hire many with backgrounds like those in the offices at Arrowhead … you seem to be sadly out of touch with the realities of the working world and the economic disaster that’s going on around us
upamtn - January 18, 2012
Actually I'm not
Most of the people in my warehouse that I’m in charge of have degrees in other fields, higher fields. Think before you speak about my field of work
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
well then, I'll have to apply there
upamtn - January 18, 2012
Economic disaster?
You mean asshats like Mitt Romney who make their millions by raiding company pensions and pocketing the money while putting employees out of work, and then tell the American citizens that they are “just jealous” and it’s all class warfare?
Or do you mean the 5.4% unemployment in the great state of Iowa, where a B.S.E.E. like myself has his electronics company but must also work a second job to provide for his home and family by choice, regardless of the “oh the economy is in a shambles” bullshit that every unemployed person uses as an excuse to sit on their ass and watch TV?
Or perhaps you refer to jobs in the extremely vertical market of the NFL, where a few fortunate people have the opportunity to chase their dreams? The football side, not the business side, of course. The business side can GFTO and go work for some other entertainment industry if they think the big bad wolf that is Scott Pioli is too hard to work for. Except that the business side works for Donovan… RAC sure doesn’t come across with the same paranoia Haley has displayed.
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
You said yourself that you have a BSEE yet you still have to work two jobs, and then you call other people lazy because they can’t find one job which pays more than their unemployment check.
You’re a tool.
Not everyone has a BSEE and not everyone wants to work 60+ hours.
manofnothi - January 18, 2012
It's not what you want to do, it's what you have to do.
If it takes 60+ hours a week then do it, or sit on your ass and get a check from those that do.
Super Gnat - January 19, 2012
I have 38 employees, and I am sure a certain
percentage of them think I suck. Largely this is because I expect them to do their job in a responsible and consistent manner. Any time one is in charge of an organization or bus there are going to be people who think you are an asshat.
G.L. - January 18, 2012
business^ above not bus
G.L. - January 18, 2012
True............
but I have been in a different situation
LadyChief - January 18, 2012
Amen
That’s the problem with people now-a-days. I’m a forklift drive overnight for a warehouse, pretty damn good employee(not trying to sound like I’m the shit). I can do 9 of 10 things perfect and my boss would rip me on the 1 thing I didn’t do perfect. They never want you to be complacent, cuz thats when you start taking it easy on your job.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
My opinion is if you treat your employees
the way you would like to be treated yourself, you will retain your good employees and have a happier department. Still, you have to expect your people to do their job with minimum feedback from higher up.
G.L. - January 18, 2012
I hear ya
I just think of it this way. The previous regime was so easy going and this new one was just the complete opposite and alot of those people aren’t used to dealing with that.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
That very well could be the case.
G.L. - January 18, 2012
That's where I'm at with this
Is Pioli probably TOO strict, sure. But it’s probably magnified cuz Carl,Herm,Dick were TOO easy going.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
This is old school, and in today's society, it doesn't work
People aren’t motivated by fear anymore. People need to be respected in order to be motivated. When you rule with an iron fist, people fear doing great things; it’s counterproductive. It’s not the 1920’s.
It’s simple: respect your employees but make clear your expectations and manage them individually. Just like a football team, you can’t coach/manage each player/employee the same way; you’ve got to get to know them and find out what makes them play/work best, and go with that.

This just in....
the way you manage fork lift drivers effectively is different from the way you motivate professionals. If my boss (VP level) tried to manage me through fear and intimidation he’d quickly find himself dong all my work as well. Professionals aren’t as easy to replace as warehouse staff.
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
This guy
Who says he’s trying to manage out of fear and intimidation? The dudes clearly a perfectionist and expects the same outta his staff, period. They can’t deal with that then like I said, McDonalds is hiring.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
If by “he” you mean Pioli than curent and former employees.
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
Ha you mean former ones who could be bitter?
And current ones who feel not intimidated enough to continue working there. Gimme a fucking break
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
Yeah! If you feel intimidated by your current boss, just quit!
I mean, in this economy, jobs are almost literally falling out of the sky! It’s not that hard to get a new one!
I have no idea whether the phones and offices at Arrowhead are bugged. But the fact that a lot of both former and current employees believe that they are or could be is not convincing evidence that Scott Pioli is a great boss to work for.
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
Like I said
McDonalds is hiring right now. Plenty of warehouses hiring right now. Theres jobs out there, not falling outta the sky, but theres alot out there.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
If your boss is crossing the line, you shouldn't have to quit your white color sales job in the NFL to go work the fry machine.
In fact, we have laws to prevent just such things. Come on, now.
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
And yet, no laws are being broken
Otherwise there would be lawsuits and charges filed or even a police investigation, which they’re not. Come on, now.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
Do you seriously believe that there are no laws being broken by any company that isn't currently under investigation? Intimidation and fear are powerful weapons agianst potential whistleblowers.
And even if you do believe that, there is a very good chance that those things could be forthcoming, now that the cat’s out of the bag, so to speak.
And even if not a single law is being broken (which I think is actually probable), Babb’s article is still deeply troubling. Because you can be a shitty boss and a bad GM without breaking any laws. And the fact that multiple employees fear or feared that their private conversations were being monitored, and that they often felt they needed to leave in separate cars and different times to go to lunch together, and that security guards are accosting guys outside Arrowhead with camera phones, speaks volumes as to how Arrowhead is currently being run.
The fact that you think anyone who doesn’t like how Scott Pioli runs Arrowhead should quit doesn’t magically make Pioli a good boss. In fact, eventually our best employees will start taking your advice and, with the word officially out there about what it’s like to work for the Chiefs, it’s going to get a lot harder to bring in quality people to replace them with.
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
And yet, we've locked up some of our best core players"
So I guess they’re fine with this “terrible” boss. You choose to believe Babbs article about off-handed comments that have yet to be proven, and I said up top earlier as to why I choose to believe it’s bullshit, period.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
You realize Jamaal Charles doesn't work in sales, right?
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
So Pioli doesn't work with the players and isn't in charge of the football side
Gotcha. This argument is past old, it was old when it came out. Your not gonna convince me or anything and I’m not gonna convince you of anything. End of story
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
I wasn't convinced until you dropped that "end of story"
That sold me
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
Glad to help
Cassel>Sanchez
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
Cassel and Sanchez both suck...
I get what you’re trying to do, and it is somewhat humorous…
SFLChief - January 18, 2012
and you realize the business side
reports to Donovan and not Pioli, right?
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
oooh, the class card has been played
Apparently, the Chiefs organization doesn’t hire professionals, ‘cuz folks are still lining up to work for them, or so it seems. The article didn’t say one thing about not being able to replace the disgruntled ex-employees.
Seems like everyone wants to overlook the fact that Haley did not report his suspicions to the league office, and the supposed “call from an unknown number” to Babb to discuss the situation hasn’t happened, either, by Babb’s own admission.
So, Pioli is a perfectionist and micro-manager. Haley, apparently, is a paranoid delusional who, as of yet, hasn’t backed up his suspicions with action of any kind.
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
They are?
They’ve had a different PR director each year and that position is currently unfilled. I guess people aren’t just flocking to work there.
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
Sounds like they've had no problem
filling that job each year. Or one open job means no one wants to work for the Chiefs? Really?
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
I'm lower middle class
and i tend to agree with you. Because I would work for the Chiefs tomorrow even in these “conditions”. A boss who demands perfection? How do these people liveeeeee?
But then again, I am no professional. So I have probably no clue about workplaces or anything like that. I should leave it to the experts I guess.

I think the only thing you can conclude is that Pioli is a perfectionist, and he expects the same from his staff as he expects from himself
He worked his way up from the absolute bottom of the totem pole because of his work ethic and attention to detail, I’m sure he expects the same from his staff.
jmcgoblue - January 18, 2012
Pioli undermined his HC using the media during the season
Pioli is an unethical, insecure “perfectionist.” BTW, if Pioli is such a wonder perfectionist, why didn’t he know Gaither was a damn good tackle? Why did Pioli release him?
Maybe Pioli spent too much time on coffee prices and trash in stairwells.
ChiefConcern - January 18, 2012
Undermined the HC using the media? how so?
Nobody knows why Gaither was released, because other than Muir saying that he’d lost his explosion, they haven’t said a thing about it. My guess is that they released him because someone was trying to snatch Mims from our PS & Pioli (and the coaching staff) didn’t want that to happen.
jmcgoblue - January 18, 2012
Think he's talking about the

NJ Chiefs Fan - January 18, 2012
That may be true but..
Those employees have the right to quit and look elsewhere for work. If they think Pioli is a modern day Stalin they don’t have to put up with it. This is America

but in this economy BTW Stalin killed his own people
LadyChief - January 18, 2012
Now i want to watch Enemy at the Gates... :-)
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
It's not that easy in this economy.
And if the accusations are true, it’s irrelevant. Employees do have rights, and if their personal phones are being bugged they shouldn’t have to quit to avoid it, just like they shouldn’t have to quit to avoid sexual harassment or abuses of power.
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
IF their personal phones are being bugged...
I think Haley used the word “tampered,” and he didn’t report it to anyone in a position to follow up and see if something illegal had occurred. Again, he didn’t take the action necessary to confirm/deny his suspicions.
Further, why was Haley concerned about what he might be overhead saying on his office phone? He stopped using it in recent weeks prior to his firing. It would seem his paranoia got in the way of him doing his job. What could he possibly discuss during a phone conversation in the normal course of work that would get him in trouble? Not using said phone probably contributed (in some degree) to his lack of success at the end of his tenure.
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
First of all, Haley was concerned that his personal cell phone, which he had been using since before becoming the head coach, had been bugged. Not the office phone (or perhaps not just)..
Sorry, “tampered with.” By which I’m sure he meant that Pioli installed Tetris on it without asking.
Second of all, are we really going to take the, “If you have nothing to hide, why do you care?” route here? Because I thought we had finally moved past that kind of McCartheyist logic.
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
Seriously?
I’ve worked for a Fortune 500 company who shamelessly told all employees that they were being monitored, as needed, at any time (except bathrooms) and that included reserving the right to monitor phone conversations.
It NEVER made me pause for even a microsecond to pick up the phone and make a business call, in-house or out. Why should it? You don’t think that unsubstantiated claims by Haley, that he himself did not follow up on, are indictments of the workplace and have no basis in paranoia?
McCarthy, huh? Now you believe Pioli and Donovan have blacklists and bring in employees to tattle on others?
But since Haley was concerned that his personal cell phone had been tampered with (a serious crime) it must be true and he didn’t report the allegations to any authority because, um, why?
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
This is what I don't understand as well.
If he had suspicions of wrong doing, why wouldn’t he take his phone to the authorities? If the phone had been tampered with, wouldn’t that be easy to prove? Is there a way to tamper a phone without any chance of finding out? I’m asking someone who knows more than I do about it because I honestly have no idea if it’s possible or not. Surely we have at least one techy guy on this site that can inform us of what is and isn’t possible. Not only that but, assuming it can be proven that a phone has been tampered with, why can’t he turn the phone over now? Also, why isn’t this a legal investigation already? I would really love to hear some facts for a change.
Chiefs_40 - January 18, 2012
So you're going to believe and unsubstantiated claim from Haley that his phone was bugged?
When he had absolutely no proof of it and furthermore and even more damning, didn’t even follow up his claim with an investigation of it? Go ahead of that’s how you operate but I presume innocence until proven guilty. Especially from am employee who could see the writing on the wall about his job status…

Maybe.
But he’s our SOB.

A little OT but Kevin Keitzmann pointed out yesterday on 810 that
Haley’s wife sued McDonalds I believe back when he was just a WRs coach for something like 1.7 million dollars for finding a dead baby rat in her salad. That’s disgusting and all but idk if it warrants 1.7 million dollars to a family that doesn’t need that kind of money in the first place. Hope she donated it to somebody That really needed it and learned the ultimate lesson: Stay away from McDs… Not saying that it relates to Haley’s nuttiness but it might point towards the character of the Haley’s in general.

Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile

Ochophosphate - January 18, 2012
I don't listen to 810 (I live in Pittsburgh)...
…but this seems STUPID to even bring up. It has nothing to do with Haley’s unofficials “claims”. It’s just them sucking up to the Chiefs by enacting some good old character assassination on the Haleys.
Don’t forget that 2 days after he was fired, he and his wife were finishing up charity work on a home for a needy family. Same guy who handed cash to the guy waiting at the bus stop in the freezing cold. By all accounts, the Haleys are good people.
MattHoover - January 18, 2012
Im not saying the Haleys arent high character people...
Just pointing out a fact that Mrs Haley sued McDs for 1.7 mil before. The Chiefs organization has always made it a point for their employees to be heavily involved in charity. I’m sure Tamarick Vanover and Bam Morris were involved with charity too when they lived in town, doesn’t make them upstanding citizens. And pointing out that they’re the type to sue for an insane amount of money might pertain to this since Haley was the one making ridiculous claims like his phone was tapped and all the walls are bugged. I’m sorry but that sounds paranoid schitzo to me. I think their character needs to be judged when claims like this about a billion dollar business are being made. And why would 810 have to suck up to the Chiefs? That makes no sense.
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
In the Haley's defense,
they probably had to pay their lawyers about 1.6 million dollars.
Brsrkr - January 18, 2012
Oh, im sure they had to pay a hefty percentage of that to the lawyer (not 95% but a good %)
But that makes it appear all the worse. That doesn’t make it an better. Because if it happened to you or I then we prolly couldn’t do anything about it cuz no normal person has that amount of money sitting around to sue a corp like that…
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
I take it jokes aren't your strong point?
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
Okay, let's take this point by point.
First off:
The rat in the salad wasn’t a “paranoid schizo” delusion of Haley’s. There was an actual rat in the salad. That has nothing to do with anything.
Now the suspicion of Haley’s that the phones and offices were bugged would totally be a “paranoid schizo” delusion – if he were the only one who suspected it. But Kent Babb found those suspicions were shared by a bunch of both former and current employees.
Why would “810 Sports Radio, WHB, Exclusive Broadcast Partner of the Kansas City Chiefs” have any motivation to parrot the official line coming out of Arrowhead? I can’t think of a single reason.
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
My major problem with all this is...
The only employee named was Todd Haley! Why didn’t Babb name anyone else? Why haven’t any of these former employees at least came out and claimed the same thing and put their name on the line? Hell, why hasn’t Haley even came back around and substantiated his absurd claim? You can’t just assume Arrowhead is some freaking CIA wanna-be based off of claims by Haley and ‘numerous former and current employees’ when none of them have even publicly appeared to corroborate these outlandish claims. God I hope I never get tried for murder with you on my jury…
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
So, Pioli dropped a dead rat in Haley's lap?
That’s what is being said. The dead rat was there, but the complaint is the Haley’s got too much. So, the accusation was correct.
Bad form, Keitz. Your analogy helps Haley.
ChiefConcern - January 18, 2012
Jesus, you people.
The dead rat has NOTHING to do with Pioli or the Chiefs. Its just an event that occurred to the Haley’s that might shine some light into the their character. Nothing else. Gleam from it what u will…
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
If I found a dead rat in my McDs salad
I’d blissfully sue those bastards too. You don’t get an opportunity like that very often! (paraphrasing Burn After Reading there…)

Did Haley actually go on record claiming that he thought his phone was bugged?
I thought Babb’s article simply suggested that Haley’s behavior was that of someone who thought it might be, and then connected the dots from quotes of others.
I can’t remember; I haven’t read the article since the day it came out. But I think it’s fair to mention, if that’s the case because everyone seems to be holding Haley to the fire for making “bold claims” that I don’t recall him ever actually making. It was more of the way he was acting.

I think he told Babb during the season he thought his cell was tapped
Which people with common sense know that that’s bullshit. And it’s funny if he really did think these things instead of going to someone that could find out or do something about it(police, whatver) he goes to the media.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
yeah and
Haley was never quoted.
chiefnation - January 18, 2012 via mobile
Haley, who is currently seeking employment with other NFL franchises and doesn't want to hurt his chances by being seen as the kind of guy who would badmouth his former team (regardless of how true it might be) declined to go on the record for Babb.
That doesn’t mean Babb just made it up when he said that Haley expressed suspicion that his phones were tapped.
MtHammer - January 18, 2012
I never meant to suggest Babb "made it up".
Just that Peter King and Mike Florio both called for Haley to speak up and explain himself if he was going to make those kinds of accusations.
However, I didn’t remember Babb’s article every stating that Haley explicitly made any accusations. Just that his behavior seemed to corroborate – or at the very least, correlate with – accusations from other Chiefs employees.
jbj8609 - January 18, 2012

KC Nate - January 18, 2012
It's a tough and progressively more competitive league and it looks like we are only going to get closer and closer to a playoff win.
This “stupid shit” could result in One Arrowhead losing a
greatgood GM.And if you are already wanting football played again, then you my friend are in for a looooooong offseason. Usually it’s just looong with three o’s.
Chiefs_swagger - January 18, 2012
I'm not sure anything could be longer than last offseason
Normally you’ve got free agency, the draft, OTA’s and minicamps (and the tidbits that come from them), more free agency, training camp, and finally pre-season before we get to te regular season.
Last year, with the lockout, we had a combine/draft, and then FA/training camp/preseason all shoved into a 4-5 week span.

Also, recent ratings disagree with that statement. Wright is clowning on that cranky dinosaur.

My support of one radio host "sums me up."
Yeah that makes sense.
And since when do ratings determine who actually is a better host? Compare them to the marks of truthful and smart journalism. One garners ratings on pure sensationalism. The other doesn’t. I’m not surprised in the least that sensationalism sells, doesn’t prove anything.

So Kietzman is the biggest ass in KC but you think Kietzman Jr. (Wright) is the coolest. And no, just because Nick’s bumps are hip hop songs doesn’t make what he does any different than what Kietz did coming up.

Much like that tool Holtus, Kietzman jumps at the opportunity to felate local sports figures
For that they can both go to Hell
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012

Wtf man, he’s a KC sports radio legend. He eats, breathes, shits and sleeps Chiefs and Big 12. What do you have against him?
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
He's a radio legend? No, no he's not. Those titles belongs to Kevin Harlan, Bob Davis and Denny Matthews
Like, I believe ChiefDJ or UC said, its one thing to be a company man its another to constantly felate the organization. Holtus is a less talented Bob Gretz
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
ive never quite understood the love for holthus. i think he obviously knows the chiefs better so listening to him is better than the cbs broadcast

SDChief - January 18, 2012
Well we'd be better than any team that didn't have Harlan
Who cares if you know the team if your just some pompous shill? It would be totally unbearable if it wasn’t for Dawson’s complete lack of filter. Holtus isn’t as bad during games because, well they have to discuss whats going on, but listening to that ass on Chiefs Kingdom is straight torture.
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
i will agree, Harlan is tops but
C’mon, you seem to disdain certain people affiliated with the Chiefs (Hunts, DT and now Holtus) for whatever reason but without knowing these people like family or close friends, how can you form enough of an opinion to dislike them as much as you do? I’ve met Holtus and met DT before he died and neither of them were pompous or assholes to me. In fact Holtus was very gracious and held a conversation with me like any regular person I would meet on the street. There’s nothing to dislike about him so I don’t get why you insist on hating certain people.

Of course, Barely Wright considers the story confirmed now.
bossmanham - January 18, 2012
If people thought this was possible, either there’s a surprising lack of understanding in what tapping or even bugging a phone entails, or arrowhead had a lot of people prone to believe conspiracy theories.
bossmanham - January 18, 2012
You're surprised that the man on the street doesn't know how a cell phone works?
Brsrkr - January 18, 2012
I guess I shouldn't be.
bossmanham - January 18, 2012
The only way
someone would suspect their phone has been tapped is if a higher up within the organization shared information there is no way they possibly could have known. The article recently from the Mothership detailing Crennel’s fierce loyalty almost makes you now question how it is they know so authoritatively? Todd probably realized quick the walls had eyes, and conversely Scott probably found out quickly Todd wasn’t true blue(red) about the Chiefs organization. This would explain the dirty secret around league circles about the discord between HC & GM at Arrowhead.
KansasCityShuffle - January 18, 2012

This is a guy who believed there were magical powers in some dirty cloths from last season, along with his facial hair
jmcgoblue - January 18, 2012
Please
The dirty clothes & facial hair was a middle finger to Clark Hunt & Scott Pioli. I’d bet Z-Man’s on it. After his raging outbursts on the sideline at some point you know they spoke with him asking to conform. One thing we know about assholes is – they don’t conform. They then grow spiteful and see what they can do to make it worse
KansasCityShuffle - January 18, 2012
I don't agree with this
Because I identify with Todd Haley a lot. I loved his coaching style and his personality because it’s similar to my own and how I’d be as a coach. When an employer doesn’t let you be who you are, and let you do the job they hired you to do your way, you do rebel, because you believe in yourself and you move to make a stand and not give ground. It’s not about being spiteful, it’s about not caving in and abandoning who you are. I don’t know how you can fault Haley for that; if anything, fault Hunt & Pioli for not letting the guy be himself and creating a restrictive work environment.
MattHoover - January 18, 2012
What coaching style would that be?
Football wise? Cuz he was flat out terrible at the 1 thing he was hired to do here.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
Yeah, Winning that AFC West Title was "terrible"
Getting a team that the prior Coach had left in shambles, into shape and totally turning around the losing, non accountability culture was “terrible”
dablueguy - January 18, 2012
Right cuz that was all Haley
The same guy that has half the Chiefs historic blowouts under his belt in only 3 years time.
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
Well stated
I have been waiting for somebody to say this! What is wrong with facial hair? Hunt & Pioli can dress like they want but they should have left Haley alone. In my view – they are the ones who look small after this. I will always pull for the Chiefs but now I would like to see Haley do well just to show them.

The Signs Of Cocaine Paranoia
When do you know if cocaine is making you paranoid? During the hours following cocaine use, in the cocaine comedown period, you’ll start to feel anxious and nervous. You may start to feel hostile and mistrust people who are around you. You might start to believe that people are talking about you, plotting against you or about to attack you. Your heart will be beating faster than usual and it may be hard to calm down and reassure yourself. Added to this is the effect of being tired without being able to sleep and lacking in nutrients that have been depleted by cocaine use
(H/T WebMD)

If this is true,report them
Don’t keep ya mouth shut and cry about it after you get fired.
denmaster - January 18, 2012
If you go back and re read the story carefully
There really IS nothing of substance there. You have a couple former employees bemoaning the fact that it’s no longer a family atmosphere, and that they couldn’t deal with the changes. The “candy wrapper” incident took place nearly 3 years ago, and it was done to make a point to senior staff. People wanting to go outside to talk negatively about the company? Well DUH, I do that at my workplace too…it’s not paranoia, but some things are private & I don’t want the people around me to hear what I’m talking about.
The whole premise of the article is based on Haley’s paranoia and the words of 3-4 disgruntled former employees. The Star says they “spoke to” two dozen former employees and eight current ones. There are a few negative quotes, and a lot of conjecture, but that’s it.
jmcgoblue - January 18, 2012
That's my biggest problem with the story
Whether or not anything is true, Babb just has too many references to “a former employee”, he has very few names. A “journalist” used to be able to cite specific sources.
bakerlee - January 18, 2012
Uh...
actually a journalist doesn’t. In fact the right of a journalist to protect their sources’ identities is protected by law to protect those that fear retribution of coming forward.

jmcgoblue - January 18, 2012
Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reports:
The Jets and Haley came to a “mutual decision” in recent days that Haley will not join Sparano on the team’s staff.
jmcgoblue - January 18, 2012
Must be because of this, huh?
Or maybe because there’s only room for one playcaller on a team.
Brsrkr - January 18, 2012
Unless your the 2011 Chiefs lol
KCinIL - January 18, 2012
ExACTly.
Brsrkr - January 18, 2012
The Jets had already hired Sporano when Haley went there to interview
They gave him a job offer to become their “passing game coordinator”, and this story came out a day or two later. Now they’ve mutually agreed that he won’t be coaching there… Doesn’t sound odd to you?
jmcgoblue - January 18, 2012
Sounds like they made the right decision, just based on football.
I understand that both guys worked together before, but they’ve also both been head coaches since then. And we saw the mess that happens when Haley tries to share play calling. If Haley and Sparano actually are friends, then this non-hire probably saved that friendship.
Brsrkr - January 18, 2012
Here is the thing, I liked Haley for some things and then hated him for basically the same reasons, but
Haley is FUCKING NUTS! This guy might have some serious psychological issues.
readANDgold58 - January 18, 2012
Because you know him personally?
Or because you’re an internet psychologist?
MattHoover - January 18, 2012
Because of his overall actions, and the way he conducted business on a day to day.
His constant feeling that someone was listening to him and the overall spite that he grew towards the organization that made him completely tank games.
The way that he would put blame and made his players take ownership on things, but then never took it on himself, and his reason for it was a constant run around bullshit story. Then he tries to go and further take down an organization that he helped build/destroy. Sane people dont generally have such a strong hatred for whomever, and feel a constant need to try and come up with elaborate stories.

Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
My thing is that if the bugging and phone tampering was true...
Why didn’t Haley go to the League office before he got fired? Apparently he knew he was going out.
Haley obviously was trying to get at the Chiefs by playing Palko the way he did. It makes no sense if privacy laws were being broken. He could have brought major shit to Arrowhead AND filed a lawsuit if these allegations have any truth to them.
So instead of keeping it legal and filing a complaint about privacy laws he instead starts Palko and doesn’t bathe for a month? Yeah, that’ll really teach the Chiefs a lesson…
I like Haley, and had no ill will towards him, but he’s making it hard to continue to do so. Dude is seeming more and more like a raving mad lunatic.

Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
So Haley couldn't spite Pioli and the Chiefs by making a serious complaint?
Pioli would likely lose his job, spend possible jail time, and the Chiefs would forever be tarnished.
Jail time isn’t the only consequence that can happen. Powerful people get in trouble all the time. Pioli and the Chiefs aren’t immune to public backlash and reprimands.
If there was any truth to Haley’s claims, then Pioli and Hunt are in deep shit.
Tomahawk29 - January 18, 2012
unless they remove it all and leave no evidence behind
then haley would look crazy
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
Which is exactly why Haley should have gone to the authorities RATHER than talk to the press about it.
Instead he played Palko, didn’t bathe and grew a beard to get at the chiefs organization? Ok…
Seriously man, if there was any truth to this, other than Haley looking more and more like a coked out lunatic, then we would have heard nothing until the Chiefs were served with a warrant. Haley already looks crazy.

having a dead rat in your salad is a health code violation. Would you like a disease carrying rodent in your food?
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
That's his point
Haley knows the proper channels to create a lawsuit.
Chief Willie Wildcat - January 18, 2012
i thought his wife brought the suit, not him
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
Gotta imagine Haley knows a lot about lawsuits after that...
Tomahawk29 - January 18, 2012
DONT GO TO McDs!!
Problem solved…
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
And your point?
Tapping personal cell phones is a violation of privacy laws.
Tomahawk29 - January 18, 2012
First and Foremost.....
with these allegations, speculation, and pure guessing as to what is going on inside of Arrowhead it seems like the front office change over hasn’t gone very smooth.
There is chatter from a bunch of you that this must be true and then the other half of you saying this is just a bunch of disgruntled employees. I can think of one thing and one thing alone that would sum most of this up and everyone of you experience this is every day life. If you are doing the right thing and not doing anything wrong then why would you give two rats ass’s about if someone was bugging your phone or listening into what your doing at work? I am sure some of you are going to say well its just the point. Who cares! If your doing your job right and doing what is being asked of you then you don’t have anything to worry about period! If someone wants to try to micro manage you that is responsible for writing your paycheck or if they are literally paying your pay check then your are being payed to do as they wish. If your being asked to do something illegal then you have a responsibility of reporting that to the NFL if you have gone up the chain within your own organization then that is the next step. Nothing has been said by anyone that I know of that the Chiefs asked them to do something illegal. With that being said then what your asked to do by your upper management, whether you agree with it or not, you have to do. I say again if your doing what your supposed to be doing then who cares if they are looking over your shoulder, listening in on your phone conversations, reading your email, bugging the facilities your job is located in. This says to me that people were not doing there job correctly to begin with and had reason to worry about this being done.
78Chief - January 18, 2012
Orwell... Orwell anyone?
Granted the shallow surface of this agrument may sound Ok its the practice of it that gives me the creeps…..From my observations of human nature there are two groups that respond to a given potential injustice in a radical way……..a victim of said injustice or a prepetrator of said injustice. My guess is that front office personnel of some teams were a source of info that the “Patriot Way” utilized to spy on other teams……..Pioli is hopefully a reformed criminal of that system and taking safeguards against its exploitation of the chiefs.
aaronbrown87 - January 18, 2012
Well...
We could be the Chargers.
Check this out, I promise it will brighten your day. At least it did mine.
kcsno56 - January 18, 2012
Am I wrong to use this whole thing as a reason to be even happier that Haley is gone?
DisplacedChief - January 18, 2012
Nope.
I’m right there with you.
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
Welp.
Nothing to see here olololololol.
NotAGoodName - January 18, 2012
I'm sure ALL of you are also aware of the SOPA act that's currently winding thru congress ... that and another that will REQUIRE everything you do online to be monitored

While I myself do not support either of those I am also quite aware that this already goes on just not legally lol
78Chief - January 18, 2012
don't worry, we'll just form havens to protect us from government intrusion
look at china, government controls everything but the people created their own safe haven
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
Ol babby boy has been pretty quiet over on twitter
Since his story came out…why does the star hire guys like Babb and Whitlock who seem like they are always trying to tear Chiefs apart??
jcrunninwild - January 18, 2012 via mobile
because they bring in readers?
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
i dont read anything whitlock writes
Babb I have read some things on and if he keeps writing things like this that are all speculation then he needs to fo. But if it turns out to be true that anything illegal is being some by the Chiefs then he deserves some credit. But at this point his story has no substance to anything other than current/former employees not liking to work for Pioli.
jcrunninwild - January 18, 2012 via mobile
babb has never been a real shock journalist. he hasnt been the whitlock, hes reported pretty much facts, and some opinion
but he rarely pulls this “inside sources” stuff, so im inclined to believe him. doesnt mean its true, i just think he reported what he saw, and whether or not it is true is unknown because they would have puilled any wire taps instantly after the story broke
SDChief - January 18, 2012
Let me get this straight.
After the story broke, they would go get Haley’s personal cell phone and remove whatever “tampering” they had done to it?
Any other monitoring, either from IT on company computers, or monitoring of company phones, would not be removed because it’s perfectly legal.
neiowakcfan - January 18, 2012
I still can't understand why a candy wrapper lecture bothered some of the workers
I would be annoyed if someone left a candy wrapper on the floor…even more annoyed if it was on a stairwell where there was traffic and no one bothered to pick it up. It’d be embarrassing to have guests or potential free agents see a sloppy and lazy workplace. Didn’t they get that? Keep your workplace clean. Have some pride and passion of where you work.
worc - January 18, 2012
yeah. they teach you to throw your garbage away in preschool, i agree on this one, thats ridiculous
i would be speaking up and lecturing them too, act like a complete child, and you get the lecture a child would get.
SDChief - January 18, 2012
+1
Tamba Hali obviously never used That stairwell because we all know he would have picked That up. Pioli Just wants a workplace full of Tamba Hali’s
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
The Chiefs would win 10 straight Super Bowls if they were full of Tamba Halis.
Tomahawk29 - January 18, 2012
this is a fact
SDChief - January 18, 2012
The Don is working on it
But he needs more time. Obviously our organization has more holdovers than Hali’s
Chiefs08Matt - January 18, 2012 via mobile
babb better hope he can get more information or else this may hurt his credibility more than some think
personally i believe that he reported what he saw, and heard….whether or not that means our guy haley really was crazy or not, who knows, but id sure like to.
SDChief - January 18, 2012
if his story had any substance then i think all sports
Media would be talking about it, but they aren’t. That to me says something.
jcrunninwild - January 18, 2012 via mobile
You miss yesterday ArrowHeadlines? Lots of people are talking about it
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
yeah, babb seems to claim he has more, but is trying to get legit proof etc
SDChief - January 18, 2012
For all those saying Babb is making stuff up to get attention/sell papers
He isn’t out hyping this story much
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
no. i think hes 100 percent legit here....and i have no problem getting pissed off with people using sources or stirring bs
but he isnt lying here, just not what he does
SDChief - January 18, 2012
All he had to do was publish it though.
The fans and other media sources will do the rest to “hype” it… especially since there isn’t much other Chiefs news going on.
Tomahawk29 - January 18, 2012
too bad we couldn't draft tebow
tebowmania still running wild
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
Most "media whore" will jump at the chance to get their face in front of their story though
HIV 2 Elway - January 18, 2012
so why aren't we doing it?
pioli?? Media whore? that sounds perfect
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
yeah, i just hope its not the other way, and pioli did have a smear campaign, took down haley, and now no one will take him seriously
plus he hasnt made these allegations, so its just hard to say, hes probably not allowed to hence his desire to resign, which is fishy
SDChief - January 18, 2012
Pioli didn't make Haley play Palko and not bathe for weeks on end.
Tomahawk29 - January 18, 2012
no not at all, im not defending haley, im just saying there is a lot of fishy stuff here, and its not j ust on one end
in fact, ive been almost against haley in this scenario because it seems a bit crazy…..so relax. im not talking his decision to play palko, ive never defended it but i will now…
fact; palko played over stanzi, period. orton came in when he knew the playbook a bit, got hurt, and palko played over stanzi.
anyway. there is a lot of smoke here. and it doesnt look good for pioli or haley, it seems like childish games were played on both sides, however…pioli Is in charge of the freaking roster, he could have cut palko a long time ago, based purely on the voice of the left handed qb coach we have
SDChief - January 18, 2012
True, it's not just one end.
But no one defamed Haley’s character more than Haley himself. That’s all I’m saying. I wasn’t arguing, just adding a comment to the conversation.
But to defend my position on Palko: fact; when Romeo took over, he pretty much immediately inactivated Palko and made him the 3rd QB, putting Stanzi and Orton above him.
To cut Palko would have helped Pioli’s image how? That if a coach doesn’t do what he wants, rather than firing the coach, and solving the problem at the root, he cuts a player that really had no say in whether or not he should start? Seems like a bitch way to do things…
Tomahawk29 - January 18, 2012
In other news, this season the Chiefs put the hammer down
Because there was a legitimate fear they might hurt themselves with it.
TRSChief - January 18, 2012
I thought we were into that type of stuff?
Chiefshero - January 18, 2012
With the way we looked to start the season, you'd think so
TRSChief - January 18, 2012
The NFL should investigate its a joke to take their word
