The Kansas City Chiefs 2011-12 season is finally over and the Chiefs finish the season just under .500 at 7-9. They beat the Denver Broncos on Sunday but still finish the season in last place in the AFC West.
So what grade do we give the Chiefs on the entire season?
I'm thinking a C right now. Anything higher would be too high, I think. And I can see an argument for a lower grade but, at the end of the day, the Chiefs did win seven games.
The adversity they faced is well-documented by now -- from the injuries to Todd Haley's firing. The Chiefs had excuses for losing but they also did plenty of bad things this year on their own. The reason I give this a C is because, if you had told me at the beginning of the season the Chiefs would win seven games despite losing Matt Cassel for part of the year, and Tony Moeaki, Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry for most of the year, I would probably be betting the under. From that standpoint, this season wasn't too bad.
We'll be wrapping up the season asking for grades at each position group but for now, take a look back at the season as a whole, and grade the Chiefs one last time.

Before the season I said anything greater then 7 wins would be a success
Anything less that 6, a disapointment. C sounds right.

Bright spots...Bailey and Houston look legit
Now lock down Bowe and Carr
HIV 2 Elway - January 2, 2012 via mobile
Agree completely
Graded them the same for the same reason and I think we need to get our 2 biggest FAs locked up.
I’d also like to see McClain back next season.
Spiderwomn69 - January 2, 2012
C overall
A for effort by the players. I never noticed any let down in effort or intensity by the players through out the whole season. Defense, omg, our defense is scary.
F for playcalling, overall front office douche-baggery.
That being said, with all the issues we had this season, the difference between 2010 and 2011 is 3 games. We lost 4 starters and a coach. That’s some serious fight from our boys, and says imho.
Go CHIEFS!
Pacific Chief - January 2, 2012
Five losses of 27 or more points.
You’re saying there was never a let down in effort or intensity?
Tarkus - January 2, 2012
Yes
Those losses came from turnovers and bad playcalling…again it’s only imo.
Pacific Chief - January 3, 2012
C-/D+
certainly not a total failure … but when you end up last (even 7-9) in a division as bad as the AFC West a C is being overly generous
upamtn - January 2, 2012
C-/D+
Considering all the injuries, give’em a high C. Consider if you will, Haley letting Palko stay in control for 4 games?
trchief - January 2, 2012
AFC West isn't bad.
how many other divisions have three teams at .500 or better? How many other divisions have 7-9 for their last place team?
It’s a mediocre division, but it’s definitely not a bad division.
Tarkus - January 2, 2012
Yeah that's my thinking
TheScootness - January 2, 2012
To stay competitve despite all of the injuries is astounding.
There is no doubt in my mind that in we keep Orton, resign Carr, Bowe and McClain, draft a franchise RT and grab Nicks and Solai in the free agency we will win the division, and it won’t be close.
Staying healthy and grabbing some quality depth could help, too.
NigerianNightmare - January 2, 2012
astounding
Orotn showed me nothing. His inability to get the Chiefs into the endzone, does not warrant bringing him back. He lost out to Tebow speaks volumes.
trchief - January 2, 2012
Ya, it speaks volumes that the Denver coaching staff has their heads up their u know whats
Chiefs08Matt - January 2, 2012 via mobile
My initial thought was to give them a D
but then i thought about the season as a whole. Before the season i think the majority of fans had us at 9-7 8-8 and 7-9. So looking at big picture for us to get to 7-9 with the huge injuries we had, the terrible offseason, the fued between GM and HC, and tyler palko im actually going to give them a B-
tyson_jackson who? - January 2, 2012
i give it a c+ this year.
they finally fired the teacher haley, but it was to late to score an A. Its like trying to study for a test covering 12 chapters, but you only have 2 hours to do it. Romeo i think becomes the new teacher full time no subsitute.
niageriannit1 - January 2, 2012
I give it an F-
any season with no playoff appearances is a bad season
Chiefshero - January 2, 2012
the teacher was bad though, the team rallied around the subsitute romeo C+
niageriannit1 - January 2, 2012
We were close
If we would have won the coin toss in the Raiders game maybe we are talking playoffs right now. I have to think Manning would be interested in signing with KC if he is released. I know, I know, the owner said he will stay with the team. I’ll believe it when they pay Peyton the 28 million he is owed.
Crown Chief - January 2, 2012
Raider fan here...
not here to grade any team (if I was grading mine, it would be a D-) Just here to thank you guys for a roller coaster of a season and for opening the door by beating the donks! You guys did your part, we fell flat on our part. See ya all next season

For the 8 penalties against SD. Just didn’t seem right if the Raiders didn’t own that record.

yea thanks we couldnt have you guys having THAT WONDERFUL record....
what a shining moment for our team!! Im surprised we didnt do something to celebrate it with fireworks….

Chiefs08Matt - January 2, 2012 via mobile
They regressed
after winning the division to being last. The coach was fired. The offense can’t score more than 12 points or so on average. There are some bright spots but every team’s goal is to make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. They Failed. F-
ChiefMedicineMan - January 2, 2012
D
7 wins could not get you a C, 8-8 gets that, I give Pioli an F for starting a fight with his HC, and Haley an F for stubbornly fighting Pioli.
Bigcherokeechief - January 2, 2012
F--------
For starting Plinko
NJChieffan16 - January 2, 2012
C-
Would give them a C/C+ but the issues at OC, ST coach, Haley/Palko fiascos sank us this year. I give all those aspects an F-. I give the Defense an A, Romeo Crennel an A. The most encouraging thing I take out of this year is the players never gave up. You have to like this teams spirit and I look forward to next year when we get All our pieces back and add in the few parts we need to make the next step.
Chiefs08Matt - January 2, 2012 via mobile
Can't believe this team won 7 games
Arguably lost their best players on both sides of the ball, and had Tyler Palko play what felt like 13 games. I’ll say C. I have big hopes for next season, based on a hopefully strong off-season.

A disapointing B
During the preseason many people including many here had said 8 or 9 wins against the schedule the Chiefs face might be improvement over 2010. That was before the injuries. After week 2, 4-5 wins was optimistic. At the end of the season, the Chiefs were a blocked FG away from winning the division.
bonesjackson - January 2, 2012
7-9 is failure
under 50%. This team FAILED.
The G - January 2, 2012
but its like finishing below 50% but only having half the information needed to get 100 to begin with.
thats why i grade their performance a B.
TheMainEvent - January 2, 2012
Winning changes everythink, so does losing.
Add sugar to it, argue all you want, the final record for this season is 7-9. LOSING season. As stated before, this is the NFL, and once again we will not be in the playoffs.

in 2010, we start 3-0 and go 7-6 the rest of the way.

Hmmmmm…C for the season

NJChieffan16 - January 2, 2012

yes
Which means our schedule wasn’t as tough as it appeared

Colts are cleaning house
RamX21 - January 2, 2012
D
I was going to give them a C, because that’s what their record is, but I think they underachieved. That combined with five blowout losses = D.
Tarkus - January 2, 2012
This was a D season
I don’t care how tough the schedule was… when the offense is as inept as ours was this season, there can be very few bright spots. The play calling was uninspired and pedestrian, the O-line has glaring issues that need to be fixed and we have an obvious QB situation that needs to be handled by almost anyone except the person that will handle it. Muir needs to leave. Bye.
The front line of the D and special teams need an upgrade, but other that that, all other things are either tolerable or perfect.
Don’t let Bowe or Carr go. That would be dumb. Go get Weeden and a free agnet NT.
Superbowl next year.

casey keenum lighting
Up #5 ranked pass defense penn st he looks good quick release accurate on most his throws finding the open guy I like it
rickrock58 - January 2, 2012 via mobile
This team entered the season on a historically BAD pace
They were, at the beginning, among the worst teams in NFL history. It was a rather Herculean performance to get close to 0.500. They get a D from me for how bad they began and their general offensive ineptitude.
Dagda - January 2, 2012
F
Solid “F”. This is the grade that was earned. This team failed, failed us, the fans, and even worse, themselves. Get better, do better, and then a better grade will come. Failure is poison, and this team is full of it. Fix it.
The G - January 2, 2012
LOL
bonesjackson - January 2, 2012
FAILED
FAILED to have a winning season.
FAILED to make the post season.
Grade that was earned “F”
The G - January 2, 2012
I actually graded
them out to a “B”.Before the season started many on this site said they would be satisfied w/ 8 wins. Not completely happy, but satisfied. They won 7 games without some of our best “O” & “D” players.Other players stepped up & can now be counted on as back ups or starters next year.If Pioli gets off his high horse & picks up 1 or 2 FA’s & can draft well this team should automatically be better.Especially w/ the guys coming back.
chiefs63 - January 2, 2012
D
From a football standpoint I’d say they were C- to C, but the fact that the organization was completely exposed for being as dysfunctional and pathetic as it was and in such an embarrassingly public way… I gave them a D. They only reason they didn’t get an F is that they finished with 2 wins out of the last three games after the bomb went off in the clubhouse.
Buck'O - January 2, 2012
i gave it a B
to go through what we went through with injuries, to fire your coach, & starting palko 3 games, and still end 7-9 is an amazing accomplishment in my opinion.
TheMainEvent - January 2, 2012
I voted a C/C+ due to the fact
that we had several key injuries and a very tough schedule. Our defense would have rated generally higher than the offense, even though we did get blown out by 30+ points a few times. Our offense was woefully inadequate for the duration of the season. Orton/Cassel aren’t the future for this organization I hope, they are good backups though. I hope we trade up in the draft for RGIII or we pick up someone else in a trade or off free agency.
5280ChiefsFan - January 2, 2012
Colts fire Bill Polian and Chris Polian.
That’s the VP and GM. Now they owe Peyton $28 million before the draft, and will be taking Luck… hmmm. Grade that.
neiowakcfan - January 2, 2012
Lets break this team down a bit and grade the parts separately
Passing offense: F-
Rushing offense: D
Passing defense: B
Rushing defense: B +
Special teams: D +
Offensive Coaching: Z
Defensive coaching: B +
Overall coaching: F
Personnel decisions: C -
Overall: C -

Z for Zing!
Tarkus - January 2, 2012
While many say they expected this record with our schedule
No one expected us to get completely blown off the field in the majority of our losses, some against good teams, some against bad teams. When we eek out wins against some of the worst teams in the league and get rolled by some of the worst, its hard to feel too good about our record at the end of the year
RememberDelaney37 - January 2, 2012 via mobile
Schedule was only 12th toughest anyway.
It wasn’t nearly as difficult as it first looked.
Tarkus - January 2, 2012
12th in total defense
31st in offense, VERY lucky to be 7-9.
The G - January 2, 2012
D
When Palko was starting, I actually started to lose interest. So bad. The Colts would have beat us if Palko was QB when we played them.
Lucasjr5 - January 2, 2012
C
We still won 7 games with all the injuries with the tough schedule. That’s just amazing to me. We were also still in the playoff hunt till the end of week 16.
Our defense was also pretty scary given the blowouts and on the field a ton. The defense finished 12th in points allowed, 11th in yards allowed, and 6th in passing yards allowed. We need to work on rush defense though coming in at 26th.
This is to a healthy team and great offseason!
Chiefsfan85 - January 2, 2012
When you dont make the playoffs , you fail in the NFL
Chiefs fans should not settle for anything less than a Championship, so not even making the playoffs gets you a grade of F……yes we had some injuries, but good teams find a way to win….Pioli did not address needs in the offseason, Haley did not get the best out of his players and coaching staff, and our starting QB, lets face it, SUCKS ASS…
Chiefs were BLOWN OUT several times….lost to Tebow who only completed 2, yes 2, passes….never scored an opening drive TD all season, scored 1 TD(hail mary) in the entire month of November….the play calling and game management by Haley and his OC and QB was comical most of the time…I dont care if you lose your starting RB or not, you HAVE to find a way to put points on the board…
SEASON GRADE=F-
KCinAZ - January 2, 2012
C-
Considering they were blown out 89-10 in the first two games, started 0-3, lost Moeaki, Berry, Charles, and later Cassel to injuries, fired a lame duck head coach, and acquired a sub par Kyle Orton, and fielded the worst offense in the NFL….and to go 7-9 and nearly one mistake or a win or two from playing in the playoffs speaks volumes to what this team did accomplish after so much crap happened. Sure, a lot Of work is needed to be done but I think this team can fix those things to win the division again in 2012.
