Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 1/23

Good morning, and congratulations to Brian Waters for making the Super Bowl. The moral of the story is a guy off the street can make it in this crazy world of the NFL. Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news.

Story You Missed

"The Brandon's" both had a good season staying away from defensive pass interference calls. Between the two corners, opponents only accepted three defensive pass interference penalties in 2011.

Star-divide

Earlier this month, the Chiefs participated in a "Thank you, fans" commercial spot for the NFL that aired before each Conference Championship Game on Sunday. The commercial is also set to air as the last spot before kickoff on Super Bowl Sunday.

While the backup market is going to be workable, it is not going to be easy to get a better starter. Another important point is that, while the Chiefs are making strides in certain areas of the team, we still have a lot of holes to fill on the roster and if we go all in toward one of the bigger name players out there, we automatically hurt our ability to improve the rest of the team - possibly for years.

So here are some of the notable options and what they would likely cost us after the jump.

Upgrading At QB: What It Will Cost The Chiefs from Arrowhead Addict

The New York Giants will head to Indianapolis in two weeks to face a New England Patriots side seeking vengeance for defeat four years ago, which saw their previously perfect season end without the biggest prize.

And as on that occasion, the Giants owe their presence in the game's showpiece to an overtime kick from Lawrence Tynes, the Scottish-born kicker now in his fifth season with the "Big Blue".

But no one in coaching annals has suffered the ignominy of Marty Schottenheimer, the star-crossed, sixth-winningest coach in NFL history.

With the Cleveland Browns - after no losing seasons and a 32-15 record his final three years - he was fired.

Then with the Kansas City Chiefs - where he had nine winning seasons out of 10 - he was fired.

Then with the Washington Redskins, he was fired after one season, in which he won eight of his last 11 games.

Then with the San Diego Chargers, he was fired after his fourth year, a 14-2 season.

(Look at those last two jobs again, with the Redskins and the Chargers: Schottenheimer was fired winning a combined 22 of his last 27 games.)

Two thoughts..

1) Lee Evans needs to send Billy an Edible Arrangements

2) We might now have some coordinator news this week

Number one is truth.

As much as Cundiff shouldn’t have missed that field goal, Lee Evans had the winning touchdown IN HIS HANDS.

Absolutely, the radio here in Baltimore seems to already have forgotten about his drop.
Yeah that was a great defensive play and a very lax job by Evans
It does, however, make coming into work today quite enjoyable

As my years of being a Chiefs fan has left me a bitter, miserable miser, who takes joy in the sorrows of my surrounding Ravens fans.

Schadenfreude can be pretty awesome sometimes.
I tthought the point of schadenfreude was that it is pretty awesome all the time

even when you should feel like a douche for reveling in it =)

You got me.

I was trying to pretend that I had at least a sliver of a soul.

But yeah, schadenfreude pretty much always kicks ass.

I have to post this...

For all fans that might be a bit bitter like some of us Chiefs fans. This is my Uncle playing his new tune “Crappin’ on the Steps of the Stadium”.

apparently the "link" function doesn't work...or it's user error...

disregard.

He seemed rushed. Why didn't they call a TO.
i bet they though NE would try to ice him
Brady better bring his A game in Indy -

The G-men are relentless..
This will be another road playoff victory for them.

The Patriots barely got by the Ravens at home.

Well the Ravens are one of the best road playoff teams around.

So barely getting past the Ravens at home isn’t really anything to laugh at.

But I agree that the Giants should probably give the Pats all they can handle.

And the Ravens were the first team with a winning record that the Patriots have beat all year
Broncos finished 9-7

against other teams.

huh?

Not sure what you are trying to say. Regular season the broncos went 8-8, if you include playoffs 9-9. Not a winning season.

They were 9-7

against teams not called the Patriots.

Ahh,k

I just woke up from 18 hours of sleep. I was still a bit groggy

Wow, that's a long night!
yesterday was my friday

And I work 40 hours in a 78 hour time span

Marty wasn't fired in KC, was he?

He resigned!

true
Didnt he knock up a hooters waitress?
I heard a rumor he was banging Greg Hills girl
If you heard this rumor in a pizza joint, then it's automatically true.
I heard a rumor ...

That he resigned after knocking up a Hooters waitress Greg Hill was dating and that he actually did the knocking up in a pizza joint.

I heard he was run out of town

by the local media. ;)

...in a pizza joint
Was hopin the niners would win

I hate both New York teams. Would be interesting to hear Waters take on the difference between NE, and KC culture.

He would tell us, but he is worried his phone is tapped.
hehe

What does that have to do with anything?

It's a topical joke

That’s what.

The heck?

My reply was supposed to be elsewhere….reply….FAILURE!!!

That's what early Monday mornings are for.

If you don’t meet your reply fail quota on a Monday morning, you’re not trying hard enough.

The only reason I'm glad the 49ers didn't go is

if they would have gotten to the SB with their average QB and won, Pioli would be more inclined to stay with Cassel in hopes that he could ride our D to the big show

The niners and ravens rode their Ds to the conference championship

That might be reason enough to believe in Cassel.

But the real reason to believe in Cassel is because there may not be a better option this season, unfortunately.

Just like the Jets last year and the year before
And unfortunately for them this year

There was no better option than Sanchize.

It's been 5 years since a quarterback who wasn't AT MINIMUM a fringe Hall-of-Famer played in the Super Bowl.

And it’s been even longer since one won the damn thing. The new NFL rules have made passing far too important to ignore that position anymore. The 2000 Balitmore Ravens would probably not have won it all if they had been playing in, say, 2010. I know the 2003 Bucs wouldn’t have.

If you don’t have an elite franchise QB, you need to constantly be trying to find one. Period. Matt Cassel is an acceptable stopgap until then but he isn’t the answer and shouldn’t be treated as one under any circumstances.

We need to take a QB high (like in the first two rounds high) this year or, failing at that, bring in somebody to compete with Matt Cassel in free agency. Super-duper extra Brownie points to Scott Pioli if he brings in somebody like Peyton Manning to take Cassel’s job instead.

you mean he shouldn't try to trade up for luck?
If the Colts are open to it he absolutely should.

I just haven’t heard anything to indicate that they would be willing to do it. That’s also one where the price might actually be too high. You can’t give up 4 whole drafts or anything, no matter who the player is.

Matt Cassel is an acceptable stopgap until then but he isn’t the answer and shouldn’t be treated as one under any circumstances.

I agree completely – however, many people on AP who, shall we say, are less than enamored with Mr. Cassel, often argue that he is treated as an “answer”. I haven’t seen any evidence of that from the front office or coaching staff – every response they give seems to be along the lines of, “Matt gives us the best chance to win games right now.”

He got a "Matt you're our answer at QB" contract
No. He got a "Matt, the Patriots franchise tagged you, so you're do at least (X) amount of money next year anyway" contract.
can we get Orton back INSTEAD of "believing in Cassel"

that really should an option on the nonexistent poll

Wake up chiefs orginization

Whats this say about our leaders who makes big decions on who to keep and not to keep.way to go Brian Waters you deserve this chance to win a ring, since the chiefs let you go.isnt it funny how one team can take everybodys leftovers and turn them into a champion.their not afraid to take chances and spend that money.

There were many other factors in the Waters thing

namely he wanted to go, we had a young Jon Asamoah ready to play, we probably couldn’t have traded him, etc.

I could see the Asamoah thing being a factor if he was playing LG

but that have Lilja in that spot and he hasn’t looked all that good there this year

In fairness, neither did Waters last season

He struggled with making a push on the line in short yardage situations. He also suffered from a rapidly declining Wiegmann playing next to him.

Lilja was better than Waters last season.

And he’s younger. There was no reason for them to keep Waters over Lilja. That is, unless they could see into the future.

You mean the Chiefs can't see into the future‽

Then what the hell am I rooting for them for?

Look...

I was as upset as anybody about losing Brian Waters. He was the glue that kept our line together, and an absolutely great human being.

That said, he is nearing the end of his career, and he’s had so much success in KC, it was time for him to go somewhere he could get a chance at his well overdue, and hard earned Super Bowl shot. He EARNED that right.

We should all be proud of him. The majority of his career will always be as a Chief.

I wish him nothing but the best, and I hope he enjoys his big dance on the biggest stage in professional football. He deserves it, and he’s earned it.

Way to go #54.

I dont get why people keep giving Pioli crap over this

Waters was the same as Tony, they both wanted a chance to go to a potential SB team since they were both nearing the end of their careers, and Pioli did the class thing and let them go

yeah!

all the other 32 teams are made up ONLY of either chiefs players or their own drafted players.

NO other team has let go a player who has gone on to do well with another team.

Poor Marty

Now we know why he wanted the Tampabay job,its the Pizza capital of the world. Now that viagra is on the market,he should do quite well.

I'm really just not seeing all the "holes" that need to be filled on this team

RT, NT, maybe a 2nd RB, depth at several positions. What real holes need to be immediately addressed that would require the couple of first round picks and a few mid to lower round picks we would give up in a trade into the top 3 to address the most important position on the field? I say none, and there is no reason to avoid trying to make a move like this to aquire a franchise QB

I just don't think Pioli will give up that many draft picks for it.

And I don’t see the teams in position to get one of the QB’s in this draft trading for anything less that two first round picks and several others. They need a QB as much as we do.

I don't think we have the ability to outbid certain teams either

But that is no reason not to try.

I think Pioli may try.

Lots of teams may. We may never hear about it though.

But I predict right now, when we trade down people are going to freak out.

I'm expecting a trade down

I’d be more surprised if we stayed where we are

Ditto.

Though if Carr splits, we may grab a corner in this spot.

I wouldn't expect to hear about it (at least not right away)

I just want them to at least try, whether we know about it or not.

I don’t see any reason for teams to trade up. What player really begs multiple picks to be given up after the top ten?

Might have to pull off a Ricky Williams trade

to outbid all the others, but I wouldn’t want to do that

OG for one, along with RT and yeah, NT maybe and if we don't get more TALENTED depth at CB, S, RB, TE we're in trouble
if we go all in toward one of the bigger name players out there, we automatically hurt our ability to improve the rest of the team – possibly for years

and that’s only if we get our own FA’s that we want/need to keep re-signed, if not then we ALSO have more huge holes at WR (Bowe) CB (Carr) FB (McClain) …

or, we can become the Raiders and wait til the 3rd Round to find available “talent” for a couple of years

You need to stop talking please

I agree with too much of what you are saying, dammit :/

No Quarterback

We might as well face it,Cassel is the man,Pioli isnt going to let cassel go that would make Pioli look bad, like Kyle Orton done.Cassel is not the long term answer for the chiefs unless you have a team like the ravens who can back you up and make you look good.

Dude, stop it. For real.

Even if Pioli wanted Cassel gone, how would he do it without being extremely irresponsible with draft picks?

This is not the hole-riddled team it was when Pioli took over (and that's largely to his credit).

We now have a solid core of guys (hopefully including Carr and/or Bowe) locked up. The window is beginning to open and now is the time that the Chiefs can afford to make a play for their guys.

If than means trading next year’s #1 and/or a player like Bowe to move up and take RGIII, that is not too much if Pioli believes him to be a franchise caliber quarterback. If he like somebody like Tannehill, he should nab him. If he hates every single QB prospect in this draft that isn’t Andrew Luck, he should still try to re-sign Orton or another FA QB to compete for the job or try to nab Peyton Manning from the Colts.

Like I said above. Any team without a clear franchise QB should constantly be trying to find one. And it’s beginning to drive me crazy that the Chiefs seemingly have little to no interest in even trying to upgrade from. I mean doesn’t Pioli realize that a big part of the success of the “Patriot Way” was having one of the 5 greatest QBs ever on the team?

Settling for another 30 years of mediocrity at the QB position is not a better option than taking a risk on a guy in the first and failing. It’s just not.

lets hope pioli doesnt create a hole letting carr walk
It'll take more than a first round pick and Bowe.

Try two or three first rounders and maybe a second or third.

Other options?

Everyone wants to crucify Pioli for Cassel, yet no one can come up with a plausible, controllable alternative to improve the position.
What else can the team do?

Try to sign Orton

I know he is slightly above average, but he would at least force the opposing defense to play in a pick your poison situation in stopping the pass or run

Lombardi says we ARE trying to re-sign Orton.

No guarantee that happens.

fair enough, I'll take Lombardi's word for it

even though he’s … you know, basically a reporter, like Babb

oh wait, we can’t trust THOSE guys, can we? (or is it trusting and believing only what we want to hear? hmmm)

seriously, I believe the guy … I just hope it does happen, would solve that issue for now

They have his name on the Super Bowl trophy.

That has to count for something.

I c whut u did thar!
And if he signs somewhere else, are we assuming the team didn't even try to sign him?

Because that would be the perfect way to support the theory that Pioli is blindly sticking with Cassel since he doesn’t want to admit his mistakes.

and what other options are out there this year

without giving up way too many draft picks to move up in the draft

Cassel could be a backup

Why not have two good Quarterbacks and let one be the backup.if one goes down then their not hurt.

So we would have to sign 2 good QB's and make Cassel 3rd string?
if you have 2 good qb's they will both want to be the starter

and if not then they will go somewhere that will allow them to be the starter

If Cassel leaves the team to start elsewhere, I won't be heartbroken.
Cassel number one or two

cassel would either be number one or two, stanzi three, unless he is ready to compete for the job, just dont know why he didnt get a chance to prove himself unless Haley was stuck on Palco.

still no

reports on who was interviewed at the senior bowl? wtf

Here's a thought germane to the Cassel Dilemma...

Alex Smith took 7 years to get this good & he was a #1 Draft pick…So… Is there hope ?…Always as a Chiefs Fan…It’s what we do…& it pokes a few holes in the First rnd QB being an instant improvement…I believe after gathering up the meager crumbs of info that are leaking out of the Krem…1 Arrowhead…That lack of a true challenger to Cashole is what has hurt this team ( Which equaled no viable back-up option either)… an oversight of Titanic proportions…So says Captain Obvious of the USS Self Evident…

Smith still isnt good

he showed yesterday just how bad he still is, he rode his defense to the playoffs this year

he showed how bad he still is?

I think he is not the reason they lost.

but

he also couldnt lead them to a score to win the game though

In all fairness

Niether could Eli Manning without the help (2 times mind you) from the same return guy for SF.

So does that mean Eli is horrible too?

Where do you get a true challenger who might be ready to step into a starting role?
If you go by Alex Smith 7 year development plan

Cassel will be about 34 and we may miss our window. The QB position is the main thing holding this team back.

have to add another 4 years because Cassel didn't start in college
yeah, always thought smith would put it together, but id related it to stanzi here.

how fun would it be to wait

seven years…..for a qb to develop…seven freaking years.

Dont know what games this guy was watching when he fomulated his opinion on Cassel
Kyle Orton = Matt Cassel. Or so I asserted in a column last offseason. This season proved that the two quarterbacks are very comparable, although each has small edges over the other in different areas. Orton is a quick decision maker and is very accurate in short-to-medium throws, while Cassel is a bit stronger and more accurate with the deep ball.
He really thinks Cassel has a deep ball?
Maybe it's a sexual thing
Mistakenly switched names perhaps????
accurate outside the deep ball

i think cassel actually has a better mid range throw off play action. you need a 15-20 yarder, cassel imo is more accurate out of playaction than orton…

but the deep ball, even i who was against orton and dissed his deep ball did the research for 2 seconds to find that orton has quite a nice deep ball….no research required to know that cassel lacks one

I was asking, "what the hell is this guy on?" when I read that.
please just overpay if you must, not flowers cash but 5-40 type of deal is fine

i love carr’s size, i love carr’s chemistry with our db’s, ive never seen a group of db’s seem to not just work well together, but really care about each other.

keep our secondary together or risk another freaking hole
