The 2012 Super Bowl is now set which means 30 teams are no longer in the playoffs. For the Kansas City Chiefs, the end of Championship Sunday could mean progress on a new offensive and defensive coordinator.
The Chiefs are said to be interviewing potential candidates at the Senior Bowl this week but there was also an indication that they could be waiting to interview potential coordinators on teams still in the playoffs.
Now that two more teams are out of the playoffs -- Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers -- are the Chiefs closer to finding their coordinator?
No names have come out of folks they could be interested in but a couple of folks to keep in mind would be Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. I'm not sure if the Chiefs would have any interest in them but I've seen their names floating around.

Thats what I thought last year
And then it came:
Bill f***ing Muir

Double This!
And thank you for finally clearing up Bill’s middle name.
ARROWHEADSHANE - January 23, 2012
I think I'd take anyone involved with the Niners defense
They played like a championship caliber defense this season, and put their team in position to win the NFC Championship several times. Every facet of their defense was quality this year.
RememberDelaney37 - January 23, 2012 via mobile
AGREEED...
The way that defensive line works is a thing of beauty constant pressure… The 49ers OC/OL/DC/DL coaches should all be considered.
I wouldn’t want anyone from Baltimore except maybe their DC/DL coaches. Stay away from any of their O coaches.
No one from New England and even the Giants… we shouldn’t go after “coaches” with elite talent on the field… give me someone that can use “mediocre” players and make them look elite.
.
DT58 in NJ - January 23, 2012
IDK...
Was that more about the players or the coaching? They’ve got a ton of talent on that front 7.
MNchiefsfan - January 23, 2012
Besides...
Drafting Smith, and getting rid of A. Franklin it’s the same group… to my knowledge (I’m no expert)… regardless their defense was playing good last year, their record didn’t show it but they were competitive in most of the 2010 season.
Our front 7 isn’t that bad either, NT, another LB and re-sign Carr and the chiefs are at top 10 defense across the board… IMHO…
DT58 in NJ - January 23, 2012
Bowman really came into his own this year as well...
I think their coaching was SO awful last year that even having competent coaching gives a team with their talent a good shot at being a winner.
MNchiefsfan - January 23, 2012
Cam Cameron????
Ehhhhh Idk…..but isn’t he a pretty successful or has been a pretty successful coordinator?
Njohnson816 - January 23, 2012
He's certainly been better as a coordinator than he was as the head coach of the 1-15 Miami Dolphins.
MtHammer - January 23, 2012
Yea i thought he was a head coach
But wat has been his stats as a coordinator? is the question
Njohnson816 - January 23, 2012
His offense was pretty good in SD when he had Brees and LT
but it’s been pretty middle of the road since
KingChief - January 23, 2012
And I remember whaen those offenses were good
The ravens offense was good at ties, I even think the playcalling was good, but like they said on ESPN they didn’t execute, underthrown/overthrown balls, and dropped TD’s
Njohnson816 - January 23, 2012
yes, I hate going to the play off only 4 years out of 4 years..
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
Their defense is the reason they go to the playoffs
KingChief - January 23, 2012
Exactly
Their Defense is one of the main reasons why they go to the playoffs…Their offense has players but as a whole is ok, and they even said during the season they frequently wondered why the OC kept going away from Ray rice when that’s why there were winning…so yea you’re right I do want a person that can get us to the playoffs over and over again, but to be honest that wasn’t because of the OC
Njohnson816 - January 23, 2012
so your saying they go to the playoffs with out scoring points..
Seriously people
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
No
I’m just saying that you saying that the OC or the offense for that matter was the main reason for the Ravens being in the playoffs wasn’t correct.
Njohnson816 - January 23, 2012
He's generally viewed as a terrible offensive coordinator by most people I've talked to.
m.yashi - January 23, 2012
And that's why I'm glad to know that
Because the last thing We need is another terrible OC
Njohnson816 - January 23, 2012
yes would hate to have an OC that goes to the playoffs every year.
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
You can have a 3 year old at OC...
if you have one of the best defenses in the world. You’re not making a strong case.
supersoccersteven - January 23, 2012
you still have to score points
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
If that's your criteria, then sure.
I like to examine it a little deeper than that. The highest the Ravens have been ranked offensively in those 4 years is 13th. And like I said, I’ve talked to Ravens fans and they seem to overwhelmingly hate him. They’ve certainly seen a lot more of that team than any of us have.
m.yashi - January 23, 2012
lol
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
What the hell does going to the playoffs have to do with someones ability to be a coordinator. Greg Robinson should have shown you that terrible coordinators can make it to the post season. You like Jamaal Charles? Want to keep his legs fresh? More interested in Matt Cassel throughing 40 times every game, and lining up on the shotgun on 3rd and 1? Then please, hire Cam Cameron.
Topchief1 - January 23, 2012
Edit: Meant to say Matt Cassel throwing, and changing the number to 45 a game, that sounds about right.
Topchief1 - January 23, 2012
I'm only interested in winning
I’m not attached to Cammeron or any other OC. As far as bad coordinators going to the playoffs, what I’m saying is they guy is on a team that is a winner, and for all the ups and downs of this season, last season, the season before, this group of coaches (yes I believe its a team effort) get to the post season.
And I would take that over not getting even to the post season, cause if you don’t play in the post season you don’t play in the SB.
In that context, If Cam Cammeron is the guy that gets us there, then I’m for him. Otherwise find a guy that can.
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
Aside from a few tricks here and there, here are words associated with Cam's offensive strategy
Predictable
No separation from D
Not complex
Easy to read
Boring
In other words, he might be a good fit in KC to continue our run of mediocrity ha ha. From what I understand and read about, I don’t think he would be a fan favorite coming to KC unless he changed our offense the way Charlie Weiss did in 2010 (don’t see that happening under Cam).
JMagsKC1 - January 23, 2012
I could careless, if we make it to the AFC championship on a yearly basis
that is an improvement.
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
True
In the end, whomever they hire you have to give them a chance – like it or not. If the next OC can take us to the AFC Champ game then we’d all be happy – but that’s the expectation anyway right? Except that we should be shooting for the Super Bowl annually ;)
JMagsKC1 - January 23, 2012
I take every 4 years
;)
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
Tomsula? Eh, sure. Why not.
But as for Cam Cameron, I’m usually pretty wary of hiring guys that the other team is glad to be rid of. I have no idea how the Baltimore coaching staff and front office feel about him, but Ravens fans have seemingly all been desperate to get rid of Cameron for the last two years at least. Caveat Emptor.
MtHammer - January 23, 2012
yeah, I saw a lot of tweets questioning his playcalling last night
most familiar to Chiefs fans… “why the draw play on 3rd and forever?”
stagdsp - January 23, 2012
This is from my memory, so it could be rusty, but here goes:
I believe that call in question was a 3rd and 3. They were on the edge of Cundiff’s range, which is not much, and were basically trying to get him a little closer…
…so they run a play that starts 3 yards in the backfield, 2 seconds after the ball has been snapped. Back is tackled in the backfield, and the FG is no longer an option. In a game you lose by 3 points, that’s a big damn deal.
DanielH123 - January 23, 2012
i think the draw play is a brilliant play
if done at the right time in the right circumstances.
like on madden last night, it was 3rd and 25 because of stupid penalties and a sack. so I call a shotgun hb draw to charles and he runs for 30 :) as the defense was lined up with 3 men rushing and 3 men back deep and then the rest over the middle and on the receivers. :D
KC Nate - January 23, 2012
Yea... it's frustrating...
The draw was designed as the football version of the off-speed pitch (in baseball). It only works if the other team is certain you’re going to pass. The coverage has to be back – playing pass. Teams that have a reputaion for running the ball find it hard to fool anyone.
David Winton - January 23, 2012
You mean like Jim Zorn?
Nick Britt - January 23, 2012
I'm not sure. Where the Raven's fans or organization anti-Zorn?
I feel like Flacco had his best year under Zorn, but I’m too lazy to actually verify that.
Either way, I don’t think he should be the offensive coordinator, either.
MtHammer - January 23, 2012
Flacco's productivity dropped off pretty huge this year
So that’s something in Zorn’s favor I’d say.
cheapham - January 23, 2012
and Cassels production increased this year?
I Think I see more statistical anomolies rather then a clear drop off.. yardage was the same, touch downs down, interceptions slightly up.. yet, division champtions.
I would give it at least two years to figure out if the drop is the product of a tougher schedule or Zorn not there, or something else for that matter.
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
His completion percentage TUMBLED.
That, to me, is more the mark of coaching than yardage, touchdowns, etc.
cheapham - January 23, 2012
So did Zorn improve Cassel?
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
Not really sold on Cam Cameron
His offenses have been up and down throughout his career
KingChief - January 23, 2012
I like Tomsula as an option.
He could come in as our defensive coordinator/defensive line coach and go to work with Jackson, Dorsey, Hali and Houston which I think would be good for them. I don’t see anybody in the league making a lateral move from OC to OC though. At least not without being fired.
DeuceDouglas - January 23, 2012
look, the truth of the matter is we will have no idea
who the coordinators will be
and when we do we will be mighty disappointed
sm7600 - January 23, 2012
How do you know that?
Mr.Pibbs - January 23, 2012
How about Josh McDaniels? He didn't sign on as the OC in NE, but as an assistant, right. So what's to stop us from signing him after the SB? It would be a promotion and thus legal by the league standard.s
dubld - January 23, 2012
McD is taking over as the OC once their current OC goes off to Penn State
KingChief - January 23, 2012
What KingChief said.
And you’re also wrong about the league rules.
Tarkus - January 23, 2012
I heard that Haley guy is still out there
ace328 - January 23, 2012
And for good reason.
Tarkus - January 23, 2012
Cam Cameron has been in the back of my mind the last few week
He’s always had great running games.
kc_radrh8r - January 23, 2012
He'll be available.
Ravens didn’t pick up his option.
Falcon58 - January 23, 2012
Just read Chip Kelly is taking the O.C. position.
strathclyde - January 23, 2012
Ooops, he just changed his mind...n/m.
strathclyde - January 23, 2012
That was quick
Nick Britt - January 23, 2012
my bets:
OC Jeff Davidson. He left Pats for Cleveland with Crennel became OC after Carthon was removed and later with Carolina were they led league in rushing. Currently OL coach of Viking.
DC Gibbs whom we know
Special Teams: Kevin O’Dea of Chicago
FrankPitts - January 23, 2012
OL coach to OC has always been a struggle
Nick Britt - January 23, 2012
Agreed
I’m not a fan. We need someone who can put together a good passing game in order to really compete.
cheapham - January 23, 2012
Cam Cameron is considered to be one of the best OCs in the league.
And I do think he’s a bright offensive mind. But Baltimore’s offense hasn’t blown up the way many were expecting. So I can see why so many people are down on him.
mistamic - January 23, 2012
They still haven't announced that Muir is done have they?
I know everyone is assuming so, but it hasn’t been made official yet has it? Either by retirement or firing?
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 23, 2012
Not to my knowledge.
But I think everyone would be shocked if Muir is the guy next year.
MtHammer - January 23, 2012
i would be okay with muir being the oline coach
niageriannit1 - January 23, 2012
Off topic... I find nothing at all in your draft list to like...
But your family photo is pretty cool.

wouldn’t mind Cameron or Saunders as the OC

Need a Todd Haley Type As OC
The OC hire is much more critical than the DC hire for both Crennel & Pioli. Given the negative perceptions that Hunt & Pioli have already projected, Crennel should demand that the Chiefs pay big bucks to hire a former head coach as OC who will be loyal to Crennel & will not put up with any crap from Pioli. Despite Haley’s negative perception as being a demanding control freak, he came from the Bill Parcells coaching tree in which loyalty is rewared rather than the Bill Belichik coaching tree which is based on ruthless secrecy. I wonder how successful the Patriots would have been with out Tom Brady? Assuming Hue Jackson will be loyal, I think Crennel should demand that the Chiefs pay the money to bring in Hue Jackson as asst . head coach. I thought it was chicken shit that Pioli & Hunt would not let Crennel interview for the Rams head coaching positon because Crennel was under contract. Pioli probably wants to keep Zorn hanging around in the event that no outsider is willing to take the job & put up with the Cheif’s dysfunctional organization.
Chief Fan from DFW - January 23, 2012
I agree
Bring in Hue Jackson
BGayles1 - January 23, 2012
What is chicken shit
about asking your current head coach to finish his contract?
And what do you mean about not putting up with any crap from Pioli?
Tarkus - January 23, 2012
Really !!!!
I was agreeing with bring in Hue Jackson as the OC, What did Zorn do in Washington, Baltimore? So put down the crack pipe.
BGayles1 - January 23, 2012
Cureent Interim Head Coach
The point that I was trying to make is that Hunt & Pioli have a plantation mentality. i agree that the Chiefs should not allow Crennel to interview for other coaching postions after he was under a new contract as the head coach. However under NFL rules Crennel should have had the opportunity to check out other head coaching jobs after the season ended if Crennel had been promoted to an interim head coaching position. Hunt & Pioli must not think that Missouri is not a "Right To Work State. Crennel is not able to look for other head coaching jobs & msut stay under contract if he refused to accept the Cheif’s head coaching job. Of course if a new head coach is hired, he can fire Crennel after all of the other head coaching positions are filled. I am not advocating that Zorn is made OC. I am only saying that Hunt & Pioli will try to save face if they can not hire a decent OC & will promote Zorn. The only people smoking crack are Cheif’’s fans who think an OC coordinator will make a lateral move to work with a cheap skate owner, a mediocre QB & a paranoid GM.
Chief Fan from DFW - January 23, 2012
if romeo wanted the rams job or to interview for other jobs, then he is under contract seeking employment elsewhere
why grant that permission when hes your top choice to coach your team? you hand out permission, and say the rams did want to hire romeo….then we lose romeo because permission, and a promotion in posiiton, is all one needs to leave his contract
SDChief - January 23, 2012
its a bit like saying bowe deserves the shot to sign elsewhere....he can talk to others unlike romeo because its not written that talking overrides the contract
franchise bowe, then can trade him to a team if he doesnt want to stay, but to not tag him and let him talk with other teams and sign there for no compensation=the same as letting romeo interview for a higher position
SDChief - January 23, 2012
Interim or not.
Romeo was the head coach at the time. Otherwise, the Chiefs would have been forced to grant permission.
Tarkus - January 23, 2012
Like Tomsula as DC/ DL ; OC ?
If we can lure Tomsula away from the 49ers, that would be great for the our DL, which was dead last in sack last year. I think Tomsula could help make our defense become a top 7 defense in the league.
As for the OC, I would like to see someone who could develop QB, and could be creative in their gameplan. This franchise hasn’t had an OC like this Hank Stram. We were close when Charlie Wies was the OC, but Haley ran him out of here.
The next OC Must be able to do the following.
1.) WANT TO WIN & BELIEVE IN HIS GUYS
2.) Develop quarterbacks ( starters, back-up, & future)
3.) Unpredictable in play their play calling & game planning
3b.) Convert on 3rd & extend drives.
4.) CAN NOT BE ONE DIMENSION
5.) Not a fear to change the game plan @ half time or during the game.
6.) Communicate with the Offensive staff & with DC. (
7.) Scoring TD rather than kicking FG.
BGayles1 - January 23, 2012
I'm kind of hoping for Greg Roman
The 49er OC has done a good job alongside Harbaugh this year, and I’ve seen some good match-up creativity from them this year that wasn’t there in the past.
midcalchief - January 23, 2012
why would he leave that OC Job
to take our OC job?
Bigcherokeechief - January 23, 2012
And why would they let him?
Tarkus - January 23, 2012
Both good questions.
For which I have no good answers. But if I’m going to wish for someone—having no actual clue about what Pioli is looking for in an OC, and wanting someone of obvious qualifications—I might as well wish for someone I’d like to see there.
midcalchief - January 27, 2012
I think
That if we sign a big time QB then we will have a much better chance of landing a top OC.
griffey2 - January 23, 2012
I hope we don't wait that long.
