The
Kansas City Chiefs are down at the Senior Bowl looking for the players that will eventually fill out the 2012 NFL draft board. The coaching staff will be down there for the week leading up to Saturday's game and they'll talk to just about every player that's there.
But we'll also see and hear reports that team A was spotted talking with player X after practice. It's the obsessive NFL fan in us that has resulted in the media feeding our appetite by writing reports on which teams talked to which players after practice. Not a formal meeting or anything -- just which teams chatted up which players after practice.
This doesn't necessarily mean anything because teams will talk to just about everyone but it gives us a good excuse to start to get to know some of these prospects.
For the Chiefs, they were
spotted down in Mobile talking with Cincinnati RB Isaiah Pead and Penn State G Johnnie Troutman, among others, after practice. The theme with those two is experience (as it is for a lot of players in the....
Senior Bowl).

Pead came in at 5'10" and 193 pounds, which is an inch shorter and a few pounds lighter than he was listed at Cincinnati. Pead has four years of experience with an increasing number of carries ranging from 30 carries and two receptions his freshman year to 237 rushing attempts and 39 receptions his senior year. He's eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark the last two seasons. The number of receptions he has jumps out at me -- 39 last year, 26 in 2010 and 20 in 2010. The Chiefs always talk about guys that can do multiple things, which Pead apparently can. It's super early in the process but Pead is projected somewhere around the third round.
Can the Chiefs use him? Yep. Thomas Jones and
Jackie Battle are both impending free agents. The Chiefs need to pair someone with
Jamaal Charles next season and future seasons. It's way, way too early to predict where but a third round pick is a reasonable spot for a complementary back.
Troutman came in at 6'4" and 325 pounds, which is about 10 pounds heavier than he was listed at Penn State. The Chiefs will have plenty of tape on him as he's been seeing time since his freshman year and developed into a regular starter by his junior year. He was an All-Big Ten honorable mention pick by the media and coaches. He's a senior (obviously). Also of note is that he was popped for DUI prior to the 2011 season.
Can the Chiefs use him? Yeah they can. They can use any offensive line depth, really. GM Scott Pioli indicated the offensive line has to be fixed this year.
Jon Asamoah fills up one guard spot and will for the foreseeable future. Ryan Lilja's future is less certain on the other side as his contract expires next year.
Rodney Hudson was the only interior offensive line depth the Chiefs had last year so they need some reserves waiting in the wings.
Wouldn't hate Pead after the 3rd
He’s a pretty good back with some speed and vision. He’s not Charles, but I think he could be a nice 2nd option. Don’t know if he’s a true “power back” or “short-yardage guy”, but a nice RB.
SCKSChief - January 24, 2012
I agree
I would almost like to see a little more of a power or all around type guy than another smaller shifty guy.
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 24, 2012
Power back
I think McLain can serve all the goal line power back needs when he isn’t blocking, and he is an inspiring leader, and simply MUST be re-signed. So, another quick and elusive back might be best in terms of a draftee. Battle needs to be re-signed. He is pretty strong and is great on special teams when he is not needed at RB. But he would serve as a stronger back in situations. I really think that re-signing McLain and Battle would eliminate the need to draft a power back right now. But if McClain and/or Battle get away from us in free agency, then we have to get a power back by rook or by crook. A complete must.
Bilyous - January 24, 2012
The Chiefs dont need a power back or short yardage guy though
KC_Chiefs - January 24, 2012
Why?
SCKSChief - January 24, 2012
Agree
Thunder and lightning combo backs are outdated
HIV 2 Elway - January 24, 2012
agreed
lightning and lightning
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
But I would not mind if they could get Micheal Bush from the Faiders though....
Kool TA - January 24, 2012
Get enough beef on the line
And any FB works just fine for short yardage.
MNchiefsfan - January 24, 2012
I don't know if they need a "true power back" or "short yardage guy" either
But more of an all around compliment would be nice. Someone who can take one some people, then still have a little speed to do something after he gets by them. If they have that guy around then I think it would benefit McCluster too if Charles goes down again.
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 24, 2012
Pead is ideal
he’s got great speed, and is a decisive, 1 cut, ZB runner
perfect fit
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
Pead is a nice back but.....
In the 3rd round range I like Pierce (Temp) or Martin (Boise) better. They are near same in quickness but stouter. For a slasher at 200 lbs I like L. Miller (Miami) or Wilson (VaTch) much better but they can go earlier. I really like some later guys: Ganaway (BU) or Ballard (Ms St) or Bolden (MS). They have nice combo of Power and enough quickness to take advantage of cut back lanes for longer gains than most pure power backs.
CatChief - January 24, 2012
Agreed
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 24, 2012
I think the later round guys lack the quickness and explosiveness KC needs
remember, this isn’t an OL that typically creates huge holes, gotta have a guy that can get through a crease and make a big play
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
Pierce in the 3rd
or Vic Ballard in the 4th…are my personal choices..
cyberry - January 24, 2012
I like Martin too! He can break a long run and has good cutting ability also...
Kool TA - January 24, 2012
I say we just re-sign McClain for our power back/short yardage guy
banshee_01 - January 24, 2012
agreed
but, Pead would be a GREAT fill in for JC if he’s out
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
Im not saying I wouldnt want him
I just think people forget that we can re-sign McClain then we can draft another back similar to JC, instead of a bruiser type, then we dont miss a beat when he’s not out there
banshee_01 - January 24, 2012
McClain
would need to add back those lbs he lost when he tried to convert to a RB. Dont forget he wanted to try and be a featured back before coming to KC. Also he doesnt add much in the pass catching area of the game. If you can add a guy who can be a dual threat out of the backfield as well as get the tough yards… If McClain stay with KC I think they are going to ask him to return to the traditional FB role and that is it.
KSU-Chief - January 24, 2012
McClain IS a good receiver and runner
but, didn’t get many reps.
but, I agree with banshee, re-sign McClain, add a back similar to JC
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
He is a good receiver
I agree that he is an ok reciever and runner. I think we want him to be better than he actually is. He isnt going to break off many big plays. That just isnt his game. He is a career 3.8 ypc back. If you are going to use him ONLY on short yardage, 1 catch a game and to block that is cool. If you are looking at him to be an actual compliment back then he would be crappy.
-
If I have a choice between a RB out of this draft in the 3rd or 4th and McClain… I would take the RB. It just gives you more options. Is McClain going to motion out of the backfield to run a route? Is he going to get you a 20 yard run? Is he going to take a pass and get you 25 yards? I just see McClain as being what we got in TJ last year.
-
I thought it was a heck of a signing last year and wanted him to get the ball more once JC went out but that didnt happen. Also he would have to want to stay here. I think the only way KC (upper management) would resign him would be as a pure FB.
KSU-Chief - January 24, 2012
I like him as a FB/RB
they should work him into the offense more.
no, he’s not a big-play guy, but he’s a valuable player that can do a lot of the little things on offense to help the team win.
Charles, Dex and the WRs are more than capable of making the big plays.
But, we saw without Charles, the whole Offense suffered… so i think it’s a priority to get a guy that can play like JC in the draft… AND bring McClain back to have the full set of skill players on Offense
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
I agree
I thought that is what they were going to do with him this year. I was hoping he would take TJ’s carries. That didnt happen and maybe it was all Haley. I hope they give him a shot if they bring him back. He was really wasted on this team this year and I hope HE wants to come back.
KSU-Chief - January 24, 2012
Need both a RB compliment for JC for one back sets and a FB like McClain for 2-back sets.
2 Feature RBs plus a RB/FB. Plus a backup like Battle. Plus a scat back like McCluster is OK as well.
CatChief - January 24, 2012
I like him
I don’t think many teams are going to sign McClain to be the type of RB he wants to be. I can see him staying in KC as a FB. I’m not even 100% about him being a FB for Charles. I know there wasn’t much of an off season last year to work together but in the preseason and early in the year before JC’s injury it seemed Charles would out run him to his blocks. It looked as if McClain would hesitate or be a step slow on a block and Charles would be running past. With a full off season I’m sure the timing would improve.
He gives the impression and has the swagger that he is one tough SOB and I hope that the rest of the O picks that up and plays with the same attitude.
brinkdaddy - January 24, 2012
OR
even pickup Peyton Hillis from Cleveland. I think he has potential on a good team.
GaryfromIA - January 24, 2012
similar player to McClain
with a worse attitude
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
that's true
I mean, the guy did land the cover of Madden. That counts for something right??!
GaryfromIA - January 24, 2012
It means the Browns fans all organized in shockingly high numbers to advance Hillis through the fan-vote bracket because it was the first chance for something good to happen to that team in years.
Plus he picked up steam as the voting went on because people like a good underdog. But his season last year, while very good, wasn’t all that great. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry and had 11 touchdowns. And it appears, based on his awful 2011, that that was probably his absolute ceiling. You could do worse, but he’s probably going to be massively overpaid in free agency.
Anyway, it’s pretty clear that the developers were planning on it actually being Aaron Rodgers.
MtHammer - January 24, 2012
I'm find with Pead in the 3rd
As long as the Chiefs sign a solid, not already 30 year old, RB and draft a young guy no later then the 5th, I think the position will be looking that much better. As long as McClain is re-signed of course.
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 24, 2012
What
IF the Rams take RG3 with there first pick, would you be happy trading our first round pick for Sam Bradford? I’d actually be ok with this, the 3rd best QB in this draft would be Ryan Tannehill (spelling?) and i’d consider Sam Bradford a much better QB than him. I know he’s got a big contract but he’d certainly be an upgrade on Matt Cassel. Any Thoughts?
kcchief1981 - January 24, 2012
id rather
Keep Orton trade first pick to cincinnati for 17 and 23 picks
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
I like the idea, but going by the trade chart (If it's still relevant) we'd be short
Trade comes up around 1250/1200 for their 1710, we’d have to throw something else in.
severn58 - January 24, 2012
Trade chart, like Two Yard Thomas, is old and worthless
HIV 2 Elway - January 24, 2012
It may be
But I thought I read/saw somewhere that with the rookie salaries being
brought back down to earthchopped down, the chart might have been brought back to life in some capacity.severn58 - January 24, 2012
I said this on another tread.
With the new rookie scale we only have one year to go off of when looking at the Trade Chart now. Atl, Jac, Cle and NO all traded up in the first round last year.
Jac and Cle trade picks in just the 2011 draft. Those teams both lost 100 points when trading up in value.
Atl trade picks in 2011 and 2012. They would lose 110 points if they were drafting in the same position in 2012 that they did in 2011.
NO trade picks in 2011 and 2012. NO gave up 420 to trade to get Ingram if they were drafting in the same position in 2012 as in 2011. Yes that was with NE. Dont ask me how he always gets massive value for his trade(Dude must have naked pics of ever NFL GM!)
So in 3 of the 4 cases the trading team gave up around 100 points in value to trade up.
KSU-Chief - January 24, 2012
I could live with the 17th and 23rd pick and keep Orton..
Kool TA - January 24, 2012
Time to get the sortable draft table up and running!
nateforchiefs - January 24, 2012
pioli is probably going to trade down a couple slots
Unless he is really sold on someone. But you never know as the weeks go on can’t miss prospects start popping up once mayock gets on it.
sexassassin - January 24, 2012 via mobile
I'd still prefer
Sam Bradford than Orton and our first round pick, We’d have a very good high draft pick young QB which is what nearly everyone on here wants, no?
kcchief1981 - January 24, 2012
I know he's smart & accurate, but does he have any arm strenth?
Bradford almost seems like another Chad Pennington to me…
jmcgoblue - January 24, 2012
Better arm than Chad
However Bradford is not an option due to his massive contract, they can’t eat all that cap then sign a risky top QB
BAMFSpecialOps - January 24, 2012
Meh, he's no LaMichael James
/yes, I know he’s not at the Senior Bowl
HIV 2 Elway - January 24, 2012
you really think he'll still be available in the 3rd?
i can see a team grabbing him early 2nd as a rb/return guy ala “mcreach”
reedeasy - January 24, 2012 via Android app
Last mock I saw, and I don't look at them all that often....
had him going like 2 or 3 picks after the Chiefs 3rd round pick.
HIV 2 Elway - January 24, 2012
Him and JC can be called slash and dash
and then they can sign the law firm to be the power back
KingChief - January 24, 2012
If James is available that low
KC’d be stupid not to take him. Better RB than Dex, IMO.
SCKSChief - January 24, 2012
funny though. McCluster was being mocked in the second by pretty much everyone
Arenas is th one who we reached for. He was being mocked in the fourth sometimes fifth round
IPWT2009 - January 24, 2012
I don't know about that
I remember both being 2nd-3rd round prospects
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
CBS final rankings were
Dex #54 and Javy #103.
Brsrkr - January 24, 2012
Braford not going anywhere
Sam Braford is the man of the rams, they wont let him go for nobody.jeff fisher came their because of Braford.resign orton and let him and cassel battle it out for the starting job.
chiefsfool - January 24, 2012
Or did
Jeff Fisher want the job due to the 2nd round pick and the fact he’d be able to take RG3?
kcchief1981 - January 24, 2012
2nd overall pick, sorry
kcchief1981 - January 24, 2012
Was reported all over the place he wanted to go to a place with a QB already in place
BAMFSpecialOps - January 24, 2012
Just speculating bro, would be a nice option if at all posible
kcchief1981 - January 24, 2012
Rams can't pick RG3 and trade Bradford
because every team would know that they’d HAVE to trade Bradford. They’d get royally screwed in that deal.
Brsrkr - January 24, 2012
All it takes is one team to pull the trigger
See Palmer trade…
KSU-Chief - January 24, 2012
I'd pull the trigger
Bradford is a better QB than any the Chiefs have on the roster and I think he has a very high ceiling. I think he’d be amazing with the WR corps KC has and add another TE (maybe two for when, not if, Moeaki goes down) and I think he’d have a hay day.
SCKSChief - January 24, 2012
OT, but PFT had a little snippet about the Nike uniform take over coming up
I keep forgetting about that, kind of excited to see what happens………for better or worse.
severn58 - January 24, 2012
Bring on the mirrored helmets
HIV 2 Elway - January 24, 2012
Fresh to def
+ Flat colored helmets
severn58 - January 24, 2012
The flat colored helmets are pretty sweet
I have only seen black or dark grey ones though. I wonder how other colors would look.
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 24, 2012
chiefs getting new uni's? they need them, just like new england and denver switched it up in the past.
the uniforms are some what lame to be honest im ready for something new, throw some black in with the red and yellow.
the great thunderlips - January 24, 2012
Add Shawn Loiseau
The Chiefs spoke to him at the east west game. He really liked Chiefs scout Pat Sperduto. Loiseau is projected to go in the 7th as an aggresive ILB.
tomahawk44 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
id rather draft to
Make our great defense epic. Address the oline issues in free agency. If we don’t spend money then u can blame the hunt family. Because we wont get a ring with him.
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
if the Chiefs happen to talk to a player from Tennessee, and they find out they really like the guy but he wants to play elsewhere ..
… would that mean our reps are Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again
upamtn - January 24, 2012
So Pioli has pead on his draft board?
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
Pead would likely be a 3rd round grab, Others that I like better in that range:
RB: Martin (Boise), Pierce (Temp)
OT: Datko (FlSt), Mosely (Aub), Potter (Boise)
OG: Washington (Miami)
OC:Jones (GA)
NT/DT: Josh Chapman (AL)
DE: Nick Perry (USC)
CB: Gilmore (SC), Johnson (Mont)
SS: Allen (SC)
FS: Lester (AL)
CatChief - January 24, 2012
Nice spot for extra picks.
CatChief - January 24, 2012
I think Perry and Gilmore will be gone by the 3rd.
Perry maybe even in the 1st. Chapman might be interesting but he played the Championship game on a torn ACL (I think that was the ligament) so he may not be ready for a while. But if KC picks up a decent stop gap or someone to hold it down til Chapman is healthy he may be a good pick. I like the trade down thought too. If theres that many available chances are one might be 10-20 picks later too.
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 24, 2012
along with lester
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Chapman is a beast
played with that torn acl like more the half a season if he gets healthy might be a good pick
kcchiefs2782 - January 24, 2012 via Android app
The fact that the Chiefs need O-Line help
leads me to believe you’re right. If they’re satill high on Charles, they’ll grab a RB in the 4th. If they’re concerned about his durability, they may pick up Richardson in the 1st, or Wilson in the 2nd. An alternative is that if Richardson is sitting there at 11, the Chiefs could trade down for an extra 3 round pick+. I believe this years’ draft is going to be interesting, if you’re a KC fan!
David Winton - January 24, 2012
We should get a 2nd rounder if we trade down in the first.
Pick 12 is worth 1200 points, which equals picks 21 and 50.
Brsrkr - January 24, 2012
I like the G washington.
the great thunderlips - January 24, 2012
Chiefs scouts talked to
DT Kendell Reyes and Harrison Smith of Notre Dame
tomahawk44 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
I think we should...
look at kellen Moore for maybe a 5th or 6th rd pick qb if we can get one of the top 2 we all dream of us getting if we can’t snag one my pick rg3 by trading up. but I see us taking ol to sure up the front 5 I don’t like it but it is what it is helps the future I like the 1st and 2nd rd picks to be explosive players that contribute right away not that ol doesn’t but they don’t put up point or take them away set for the long post guys but my picks are:
1st pick rg3 meaning we won’t have a 2nd or 3rd so 4th OL/DT 5th OL/DT
or
1st decastro 2nd poe 3rd RB/LB 4th RB/LB 5th kellen Moore 6th OL 7th OL/S/CB
sry again what do you guys think?
kcchiefs2782 - January 24, 2012 via Android app
I've been thinking about this
Given that Richardson is the greatest talent since Peterson according to pretty much everyone. I have a feeling we will take him in the first. We have a history of drafting the best talent available for a position of need and this just seems like something KC would do.
brinkdaddy - January 24, 2012
I wouldn't complain but...
idk about that do you think we really need another number 1 running back saying jc comes back 100%
kcchiefs2782 - January 24, 2012 via Android app
I don't
like taking a RB that high, but we are Chiefs fans. Anything is possible.
How high in the draft we take a RB will be a good insight on what they think of Charles and his health.
brinkdaddy - January 24, 2012
decastro
Wold be best player available, fills a bigger need.
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
This makes perfect sense to me...
since I have Pead in my Chiefs Mock Draft as a 3rd round pick, behind a QB or G DeCastro in the 1st, and an OT in the 2nd. I origionally had Pead as a 4th rounder, but I see him moving up draft boards as we get closer to draft day. KC could suprise and go with Richardson in the 1st, or Wilson in the 2nd, because of the depth of O-Line talent available in this darft.
David Winton - January 24, 2012
im a defense guy
Kuechly / hightower first. Then zabre in second. Jones oc in third. Top three picks can come In start day one. Offensive line is set and defense is set with a few exceptions ( bowe and Carr) then pick up depth 4-7 and free agency.
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Rather have Martin, from what ive heard hes the only one who could handle blitz pick-ups.
And Walterfootball says we met more then two people.
http://walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2012meetings.php
ChiefWarPaint - January 24, 2012
i heard martin
Is alot less athletic then most tackles in this draft.
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
From where?
Doesnt seem that way on film, and he ran a TD back against ASU, I doubt any Tackle could do that.
ChiefWarPaint - January 24, 2012
todd mcshay...
I bet more then u think could given the opportunity.
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Yeah maybe if they got really lucky
Also Todd Mcshay is pretty garbage as far as draft analysts go. I think he still has Burfict on his top 10 list, or at least just took him off recently and thats just turrible.
ChiefWarPaint - January 24, 2012
well he does this for a living id take his analysis over urs
Also burflict is a top 10 talent. Last time sum 1 question a linebacker like him he turned out to be a. Hall of famer. (ray Lewis)
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
He also says dumb crap to get attention
Burfict is not a top 10 talent, potential.. yeah, talent.. no.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 24, 2012
agree
he is like a 3rd round pick which we should look at in the 3rd sure up our elite LBs saying we don’t snag hightower or Luke
kcchiefs2782 - January 24, 2012 via Android app
Luke doesn't fit SILB for us though
At least IMO.. he doesn’t take or shed blocks well, doesn’t attack the LOS very well. He flows along the line to clean up the plays. He is a WILB in our scheme, which we have no need. Especially with big question marks at NT
BAMFSpecialOps - January 24, 2012
agreed about Luke
not a fit.
though, I’m not as worried about NT as most people are
stagdsp - January 24, 2012
With Belcher/DJ I'm not too worried
With Luke and DJ I would be scared. All that money tied up in the secondary, and no team would every have to throw the ball
BAMFSpecialOps - January 24, 2012
yhe guy makes plays
Brendon - January 24, 2012 via mobile
No idea what that means
BAMFSpecialOps - January 25, 2012
vontaz is a top 10 talent, quit hating.
the great thunderlips - January 24, 2012
He is not a top 10 talent, get over it.
He could be ranked top 10 on potential, but has not been able to put that potential to good use.
No worries, I still remember the sigbet
BAMFSpecialOps - January 25, 2012
So youd take say a faux news contributors word over soneone elses because its there job?
Have you seen either Burfict or Martin play? You could start with that instead of leaning on others whos sole job it is to get attention.
ChiefWarPaint - January 24, 2012
The more I think about it..
The more I think we should trade back in the first round and get more top 100 picks..
