So maybe Bill Muir won't be retiring.
On January 2, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora cited league sources saying Muir, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator last season, was "likely" to retire.
Bob Gretz of BobGretz.com spoke to Muir at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama and news of Muir's "likely" retirement was news to Muir. He is not retiring.
(Which begs the question why someone, let alone multiple people, told La Canfora he was.)
But he tells Gretz he will not be the Chiefs offensive coordinator next season. He's currently on the Chiefs staff as the offensive line coach, the position he held before Todd Haley announced his added OC duties last year during Super Bowl week. He says he's planning on staying in that position until someone tells him otherwise.
So, it sounds like Muir very well could end up staying on just as the Chiefs offensive line coach.
Check out the full report, where Gretz lays it all out with quotes from Muir.

Wonderful.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
You'd miss him.
But shouldn’t Oline coach be up to the OC?
Brsrkr - January 24, 2012
I would think so.
Not sure how that works, though.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
I'd think with Romeo as the head coach,
the OC would be defacto lord captain commander of the offense, so would get to pick a staff.
Brsrkr - January 24, 2012
agree
But I would like Muir to stay on as O-line coach
Steve_Chiefs - January 24, 2012
We could use his expert opinions on why Gaither was released for Barry Richardson
KC_Chiefs - January 24, 2012
Im sure the OC will have input and preferences
But final call is up to Crennel. Im sure he wouldn’t pick two people who are going to clash to much
nateforchiefs - January 24, 2012
i would be okay with muir as oline coach
thats where he belongs.
niageriannit1 - January 24, 2012
He said he is staying until someone tells him to leav
That someone could be a new OC
Chiefs fan in ST Louis - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Exactly.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
its romeo call on that one
if romeo wants muir back then muir staying.
niageriannit1 - January 24, 2012
I am fine with that, as long as he has nothing to do with play calling
banshee_01 - January 24, 2012
O-line coach is fine with me.
Just get a new goddamn RT for Muir to work with
nateforchiefs - January 24, 2012
exactly, and throw in a decent rg for safe measure...
LHO - January 24, 2012
Asamoah might punch you.
Brsrkr - January 24, 2012
and he'd be justified
stagdsp - January 24, 2012 via mobile
yeah i totally meant lg
LHO - January 24, 2012
haha
Thought so
Prepare yourself for 1 more year of Lilja… he might surprise you and be good with Hudson starting at C
Unless Decastro is drafted!
stagdsp - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Lilja will be the wizened vet.
Every unit needs one.
Brsrkr - January 24, 2012
Maybe Gaither will be available.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
As LT
So we can move Branden Albert over to his natural position of Tight End/Line Judge.
cheapham - January 24, 2012
Muir would like that.
He’s a big fan of Gaither.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
exactly. and so is pioli, the man who cut gaither.
SDChief - January 24, 2012
Branden Alberts natural position is Center/ Director of player personnel
Kool TA - January 24, 2012
Agreed, O-line is where I draw the line..
I think Haley had more to do with Gaithers being cut the Muir did..
Kool TA - January 24, 2012
Even though Muir threw him under the bus after he was cut.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
yeah i don't blame muir that much for that
haley wouldn’t let muir do his job, not that muir would of done good at oc, but muir never was given a legit shot at oc. haley called the plays most of the time
niageriannit1 - January 24, 2012
You act like he wouldn't have a script to read off of.
He was singing the “company line”—whether it was Todd’s or Scott’s, it was still the KC “company line”—as loudly as he possibly could. A blind man with a hearing aid could see that Gaither could play…someone saying something that dumb, that loudly? With Muir’s experience and knowledge?
go_saleaumua - January 24, 2012
sounds good
One less spot to fill
stagdsp - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Everything in this post is good news
HisDirkness - January 24, 2012
2nd
Steve_Chiefs - January 24, 2012
Amen
cheapham - January 24, 2012
Peyton Manning for OC!
He can also throw the ball around if he would like.
DrDC - January 24, 2012
ol coach. good news.
but it makes me wonder why an offensive coordinator would come here if he cant hire his own staff
SDChief - January 24, 2012
not hire, but have say in position coaches on the offensive side* since this is when coaches repay others who helped them get where they are
SDChief - January 24, 2012
Nothing there to indicate otherwise.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
ah k
SDChief - January 24, 2012
its romeo call as to who the oline coach is
niageriannit1 - January 24, 2012
They're not lying about looking for a new OC
but they’re keeping Muir in his OL coaching position as well as the others until they get an OC that will go through the staff there and see who he wants to keep and who he doesn’t…some coaches/coordinators can finds some gems in their new position and others do a clean sweep and bring in all new people. That’s how I see it.
chrisjo07 - January 24, 2012
THANK GOD
I could care less if he’s on the team or not at this point but I’m SO GLAD he’s confirmed he will NOT be our OC.
Tyran - January 24, 2012
Also does anyone have any real idea why Haley promoted him?
It never made any sense to me even at the time of the announcement.
Tyran - January 24, 2012
Because he went nuts?
I don’t know, that’s all I got.
Tarkus - January 24, 2012
he has a screw loose
LadyChief - January 24, 2012
Pioli said it was either McDaniels or Muir, hoping to force him to take McDaniels.
electriclight - January 25, 2012
Duh
Because Pioli strapped him to Haley, like he did with Palko, Gaither, and all those other losers that caused us to get blown out of the water in the majority of losses
RememberDelaney37 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, stupid Gaither!
If it wasn’t for him, we would have been competitive against the Patriots, Jets, Bills and Dolphins!
DrDC - January 24, 2012
Omg is this a coordinator update Joel??
This is probably the best news we heard in a while
NJChieffan16 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Sarcasm fail?
Falcon58 - January 24, 2012
I damn well hope so
SCKSChief - January 25, 2012
Good! As long as he’s not calling the plays it’s a good thing!
Ncchief31 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Good! As long as he’s not calling the plays it’s a good thing!
Ncchief31 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Holy crap!
This is the first bit of good news I’ve seen regarding the team since Romeo was hired. Now, lets get a OC to replace him, re-sign Bowe and Carr, win the super bowl, and be done with it
RememberDelaney37 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
If only it were that easy...let's win a playoff game first
I never seen anything like that happen to this franchise.
NJChieffan16 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Well before all that
We DO need to get another OC. Y’know, a good one.
SCKSChief - January 25, 2012
Yay!
bossmanham - January 24, 2012 via mobile
More sarcasm fail?
Falcon58 - January 24, 2012
Here's hoping
SCKSChief - January 25, 2012
WHEW! I've just breathed a sigh of relief when I read this article..
We do NOT want to lose a coach this valuable. I mean, the guy’s been around the game since the game was invented.
J_r0kk - January 24, 2012
That is the best Chiefs news I've heard for awhile.
Fozzyboyd - January 24, 2012
Nice.. I hope he interviews Carmichael for OC
Jeremy Daniel - January 24, 2012
FU#K!!
It’s like trying to get rid of a bad penny….or a teacher in the NY public school system. It’s almost like he is our very own Milton!!! Someone check the records, I am sure he was removed from payroll by Hank back in the 60s. Then get to HR and stop giving him checks. The rest should work itself out…no need for a confrontation.
chiefsandcigars - January 24, 2012
You sir have made me laugh with this comment
What if he was on the staff with Hank?
NJChieffan16 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
"I think you ought to know... I'm feeling very depressed."
Falcon58 - January 24, 2012
Oh... my bad. Reading fail.
NOT the offensive coordinator! YAY!
Falcon58 - January 24, 2012
Lol haha I wondered why u said "Sarcasm Fail"
NJChieffan16 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
I like this
Muir is a solid O line coach, but he should not be the OC. The best Oline performance we’ve had since Pioli came to town is when Muir was OC
IPWT2009 - January 24, 2012
this is just nuts.
What else can one say?
Buck'O - January 24, 2012 via iPhone app
Fantastic
Seriously. This is good news. I think Muir has done a pretty damn good job with the offensive line. I, for one, am glad to have him back and devoting all his time to that role.
TheScootness - January 24, 2012
what i would like to know is up in tell haley got fired what was the percentage of
haley calling the plays or muir. my money on haley called most of the offensive plays this season
niageriannit1 - January 24, 2012
If he ain't retiring
Maybe there should be a firing.
