We've had several people ask if there's any updates on the status of Kansas City Chiefs free agents Brandon Carr and/or Dwayne Bowe. The answer, as it has been for a while, is no. There aren't any updates. The Chiefs have surely approached the reps for both players to hammer something out but I don't know where they stand in that process.
And I don't expect an update on those two anytime soon. At least not for a few more weeks.
That's because the players only real leverage here is the threat that they could leave via free agency. Are the Chiefs more likely to offer the best deal in January, with free agency seven weeks away? Or in March, with free agency only days away? Thus it may not make sense for Carr and/or Bowe to flesh out a contract ASAP when they may not have maximum leverage. And maybe one of those guys, if they're not franchised, would want to at least test the open market first, which would delay the process even further.
The first date in which the franchise tag can be applied is February 20 and it has to be used by March 5 so if one of these guys is going to get the tag it has to be within that window. Free agency starts on March 13.
I think/hope the Chiefs get something done with these guys. But I think it's gonna go down to the wire.
(Now watch, after I write this, they'll sign 'em both this week.)

If that happens, write an article on how the Chiefs won't win the Super Bowl any time soon
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
or how we wont ever find a franchise QB
banshee_01 - January 25, 2012
Or how tickets are too expensive
DanielH123 - January 25, 2012
right!
we need a QB very very bad like someone named RG3 I say sign Carr tag and trade bowe and a our 1st rd pick to stl snag our QB for the next 15 years and win 3 superbowls during that span
kcchiefs2782 - January 25, 2012 via Android app
what, pull a madden...
and win the superbowl all 15 years… sry other 31 teams, Im selfish, but if you ask nicely ill allow us to only go 14 of next 15…
Akr_Baby - January 25, 2012
some people are just greedy, yanno?
upamtn - January 25, 2012
at this point i'd settle for just a playoff win
out of every team i root for this one is just the most depressing
mightymosdefinition - January 25, 2012
what?
there ARE no “other teams”"
upamtn - January 25, 2012
He's probably talking other teams from other sports...
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
what
I said 3 superbowls in 15 years I’m not crazy 15 out of 15 years I’m with you I’d just love a playoff win but if we make those moves I think it is very possible
kcchiefs2782 - January 25, 2012 via Android app
Bowe's Agent?
Didn’t D-Bowe change Agents last year? If I’m not mistaken he is using Drew which means he’s going to be looking for the biggest contract available.
If it comes down to Carr Vs Bowe give me Carr everyday of the week especially when Vincent Jackson and Reggie Wayne will be available.
doriang03 - January 25, 2012
Bowe should be looking for the biggest contract available
HIV 2 Elway - January 25, 2012
He'll get a ton of money, no doubt.
My gut feeling is that it will be somewhere else, though.
Scott B. - January 25, 2012
If that happens, it will be because the Chiefs traded him for picks
The Chiefs have a few options.
Sign Bowe and Carr.
Sign Bowe, franchise and trade Carr.
Sign Carr, franchise and trade Bowe.
It would be hard for them to really lose in this , I’m hoping that they sign both of them, but the possibility to add draft picks is enticing as well.
No matter what, it should be fun to follow once the info finally comes…
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
Or they could franchise Carr...and watch Bowe walk off into the sunset.
Scott B. - January 25, 2012
I don't think they will Franchise either of them
until the other is signed…
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
Why dig a hole like that?
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
I agree
But, I don’t know if Pioli does.
Scott B. - January 25, 2012
all of these past contracts gives me some faith in Pioli in this area
Jamaal Charles signed on for some six feet bubble tape bubble gum and Elvis Costello mix tape…
he managed to sign Tamba Hali after that ridiculous Charles Johnson contract for less money, this is the one area where it is easy to have faith in Pioli.
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
I definitely agree with you.
This is one of Pioli’s plus sides.
GaryfromIA - January 25, 2012
If one is determined to walk and opposed to signing a contract with the Chiefs
that is the one you franchise.
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
they wont let him just walk

TRSChief - January 25, 2012
At a certain point
Is there much of a difference between 9 million dollars a year and 10 million dollars a year?
If I get a choice between a place I really don’t want to work and a place I’d really like to work, a 10% diffference in salary isn’t going to be the biggest factor.
MNchiefsfan - January 25, 2012
But how can you feed your family on only $9 million
you need that extra million for groceries
KingChief - January 25, 2012
Only difference is
About a million dollars a year :)
Eastcoastransplant - January 25, 2012
11% isn't trivial
These guys have a limited window to earn and in many cases are trying to support many people. The teams can and do cut them at the drop of the dime, so players should be trying to squeeze every dime possible out the team.
HIV 2 Elway - January 25, 2012
That's a solid point
Guarantee money is always the primary factor.
Given Bowe’s history of not getting hurt, I wouldn’t have a problem showing we’re willing to drop as much or more guaranteed money than another team.
MNchiefsfan - January 25, 2012
That's one less
Chrsyler 300M with 24’s on it…
Among other things like jewelry and shoes
GaryfromIA - January 25, 2012
Depends on how much family you're taking care of
jmcgoblue - January 25, 2012
Agents work for players, not the other way around.
If he wants his agent to get him the most money possible, he’ll do that. If he wants him to get him the best possible contract with the Chiefs, he’ll do that.
Tarkus - January 25, 2012
^ This
And we have no real way of knowing if Bowe even wants to stay here.
Scott B. - January 25, 2012
Who wouldn't want to stick around with Pro-Bowler Matt Cassel throwing you balls?
joplin chiefs fan - January 25, 2012
That's possibly the biggest concern with Bowe's contract talks.
If he could go play with a better QB… would he take less money for a better shot at the ring?
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
You mean the guy
who helped put him in the Pro Bowl last year?
Tarkus - January 25, 2012
He was on the pregame show for the Bama vs LSU game.
stated he wanted to stay in KC.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 25, 2012
So it must be true
money talks in the sports world
KingChief - January 25, 2012
in other words, for the next month or more, this will be like the Daily OC/DC Updates ... No Gnus
upamtn - January 25, 2012
What's so bad about that?
I was always told that no gnus is good gnus.
TRSChief - January 25, 2012
Maybe
Pioli is waiting to see what happens with Manning before signing any big contracts
badassz1987 - January 25, 2012
Maybe everyone is waiting for Manning's head to fall off before giving up on that fantasy.
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
LOLOL
upamtn - January 25, 2012
Manning drops back, looks downfield ... his head falls off, and now there's a flag! let's see what the referee has to say about it ...
“there is no flag on the play, the whistle was blown to allow the player to reattach his head … please reset the play clock to 7:45 … it is still 3rd down”
upamtn - January 25, 2012
Lego Madden?
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
I would not sign Bowe long term
He has maturity issues now imagine what he will be like after getting 35mil guaranteed. Focus on Carr and franchise Bowe maybe move him via trade before the draft, sign V-Jacks and lets go lose another playoff game next year
doriang03 - January 25, 2012
I had to update my draft sig
I think Carr is still the bigger priority over Bowe, only because I think we would have to take a 1st or 2nd round CB to replace him. Brown might be the answer, but he might not.
The issue of not signing Bowe is if the Chiefs don’t… what makes us think they will spend money on another WR in FA? Unless that’s the plan all along. We do need more speed at WR.
Most of all, we still need beef for the OL and a QB.
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
I think Brown is going to turn into a pretty good corner
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
I feel good about him being Carr's replacement.
I’d roll the dice on it. And as much as I like DeCastro… if the Chiefs went out and signed a G in FA instead… I’d be okay with that. The FA Gs are much more prolific than FA®Ts. Sign a G, Draft a RT. If they get it done before the draft, I can see that 1st round pick being a surprise to everyone. Someone like Hightower, Richardson or even a Burfict.
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
Interesting... that should be FA RTs. The R was supposed to be in parentheses.
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
I kind of like it
DanielH123 - January 25, 2012
You are just finding clever new ways to write fart
kudos…
I don’t want to lose Carr, but I do think Brown will develop into a good player once he learns the ropes. He has all the tools in the world.
Those Stanford lineman scare me… they are playing in front of a QB that people want to give up 109 draft picks for and are a tandem.
Who is the Peppers? Who is the Sims?
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
Yeah, that's why I could see going after a G in FA.
I was looking a Brisiel from the Texans. Maybe the 4-5th best G in FA. Good in a ZBS if we’re going to stick with that.
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
Actually, now that I look at it...
That whole sentence with FA®Ts in it is pretty hilarious if you read it at face value. It was obviously not meant the way it looks.
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
Agreed
I would however argue that the opposite is actually true.
DanielH123 - January 25, 2012
Oh yes... I think FA(R)TS are more prolific.
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
Cough up the cash, Clark
ArrowDread - January 25, 2012
I think Bowe gets the franchise tag.
Carr will either get a long term deal or he will be gone.
saskwatch - January 25, 2012
Why draft them if you aint gonna pay them?
ArrowDread - January 25, 2012
Unless the Chiefs are building for a trade up.
There is zero reason not to keep both.
Cough up the cash Clark… agreed.
Chief-blinders-on - January 25, 2012
Because sometimes when you're from NE... you draft players.... find the studs...
And trade them for 73 draft picks. Because we love MOAR DRAFT PIKKS!
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
Patriot way= exploit cheap labor
ArrowDread - January 25, 2012
You should take up a collection for their poor players.
Tarkus - January 25, 2012
I say why not
if you can draft a guy in the 3rd, turn him into a stud then get 4 draft picks for him, meanwhile you keep winning, then why the hell not do it
banshee_01 - January 25, 2012
Because the only real reason that this is an option is when you have
TOM BRADY! My god people, he is the constant there and the reason that they are always in contention. Look they got him in the late rounds and could have traded his ass for 3-4 first round picks. Did they? NO, because that would be f*cking retarded. The franchise QB is what people need, everyone else is a role player. This is why we all need to be pissed that this franchise has no real want to go out and get a franchise QB. Sickening
readANDgold58 - January 25, 2012
I think Brady is the best QB in NFL history but...
they also went 11-5 the year he was hurt, so it must not be all him that makes them win….just sayin
banshee_01 - January 25, 2012
Brady (Franchise QB) + Offensive System = Super Bowls
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
Cassel (Backup QB) + Offensive System = 11-5
Falcon58 - January 25, 2012
Oh yeah, how many playoff games did they go to and win without Brady?
Oh yeah thats right ZERO!
readANDgold58 - January 25, 2012
It's rare that a team goes 11-5 and not make the playoffs
just last year a 7-9 team made it and an 8-8 team went this year
KingChief - January 25, 2012
Why not wait and see what the incomming crop of talent is going to be in the draft
And then sign them.
Skrappy - January 25, 2012
Well we know who is in the draft.. why havn't we signed them yet?
