Sounds Like Romeo Crennel Will Be Chiefs Defensive Coordinator, Too

It's getting close to being official: Romeo Crennel is going to be the Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator, too. Crennel previously said he would keep calling the defensive plays.

"I think Romeo, I'm not sure if he's stated it publicly, but I get the sense that Romeo wants to be the coordinator on defense and that that'll happen," Chiefs GM Scott Pioli said on Sirius XM NFL Radio from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. "I don't know if he's made the absolute final decision but I'm pretty sure that's the way he wants to go."

This is really the first confirmation that Romeo will actually be the coordinator as well. (And I think a lot of people assumed this when he said he'd call the defensive plays.)

On the one hand, I think this is the right move and I'm on board with it. I'd do the same thing. The defense is the bright spot on the team and I don't want to tinker with that too much.

On the other hand, it's hard to forget all the things the Chiefs used to say about a head coach calling the plays. Remember Todd Haley giving play calling duties to Charlie Weis in 2010 and how that allowed him to "be the head coach"? And how most agreed with him? Is it different now? I'm not saying I disagree with Romeo running the defense. It's just an interesting situation when you compare the two.

There are a few interesting nuggets in Pioli's interview that we'll highlight tomorrow. (No, he didn't announce an offensive coordinator.)

I like that Pioli acts like he doesn't know for sure.

Yeah. Bullshit.

Yeah that was weird

He’s made the point a few times that Crennel picks his own staff. Maybe he’s sensitive to people thinking he makes those decisions.

If that man is not sensitive to perception right now

He never will be

what, suddenly he cares what people think?

that in itself would be the surprise :-)

Be careful what you say...

Your office may be bugged. And your cell phone, too.

oh, no worries, Scott ... whatever I say can only be used for "entertainment purposes"
ups i hear u are moving on up
to the east side?
What do you think the percentage of the people on AP

That get that joke? Just curious.

100%

of the people who count. :)

I did. Is that bad?
nah, just means yer old like me ;-)
With age comes wisdom...is what they say.

I’m still waiting.

me too, I just wait more slowly these days
Yeah, I do EVERYTHING more slowly these days.

And half the time, it STILL hurts the next morning.

+55 and over
Only upper 40's...you mean it gets worse?
How come the old guys are the only ones up late?
We're actually up early.
oh yeah?

WTF is my problem?

you have several ...

any one in particular we should worry about more than others?

I still kinda like Scott Pioli

;)

ok, now I'm worried about you
I'll get better
every day above ground is a GOOD day
Keep reminding me of that

I’m wearing my nuts for earings after today, but you’re right.

TMI Buck ... way way TMI
Lol

Yeah. Maybe so. I’ve had to be extraordinarily direct today. I suppose I haven’t shifted years just yet.

Because we're not getting laid.
hmmm

I can’t really think of a snappy comeback for that one

Sad deal, huh?
'tiz

Imma go drink some prune juice now

save me some fiber, k?
Grats Ups....but be careful The Thorman's use phone taps ; )
thanks Masons

I no worried, I speak in code now .. aka gibberish

hey why don't you just butt out, you don't run AP...get out of here

Lord help us, more power for The Man on the Silver mountain!!!

I didn’t think AP could afford you ; p

hey, I'm smarter than all of you put together ... HOMIE!

let’s just say I won’t make as much as Carr or Bowe or Cassel …

… or Warpaint, or the volunteer waterboy, or …

u get a company car and expense acct right
if by that you mean a used Matchbox knockoff and a nickel ...

you got it

We just check in at AP on our way to pee every two @#$@! hours
All about the Jeffersons, baby :)
if i had one percent of ups money now i would be a wealthy man now
dude, I'm like penniless, seriously ... BUT ...

I’m wealthy in friends, that’s what really counts :-)

God forbid

Scott Pioli not be the tyrant so many believe him to be.

Sounds good to me.

I was worried what bringing in another DC would do.

Don't mind at all. This defense is a well oiled machine under RAC.
You know your a Chiefs fan when...

your automatic reaction is, “it could work…”

quickly followed by, “God I hope so.”

one MAJOR difference though ... Haley was a "puppy" still finding his way as HC

Romeo’s “been there, done that” … the “Old Dawg” has nothing to worry about on that part of it (he’ll delegate tasks, as he should, and allow his people to do what they have to do)

I no worried, I trust Crennel

Your optimism has me feeling a little better, ups.

Very, very little…but, still.

If the offensive coordinator we hire is an experienced guy, he might call the offensive plays

and probably do the bulk of offensive gameplanning. I think Romeo can develop the defensive gameplan each week while managing head coaching duties. The trick will be clock and game management while the offense is on the field and Crennel wants to be over chatting with his defense.

no doubt the OC will call offensive plays ... and the offensive gameplanning is the responsibility of the OC anyway

Romeo, if he needs to say something to the Defense, will either do it quickly or have someone else talk to them … he’ll have his head “in the game”

he’s done this before :-)

Isn't that half the question though

Offense should be OC, but shoud defense be HC?

given Romeo's football smarts AND experience, I just gonna trust him on this one

and there are some DC/HC guys out there, just as there are OC/HC

were waiting for peyton manning to get released oc and qb all in one
Manning > Muir + Cassel
i'mokay with muir being the oline coach
Ok with it

I don’t think it’s a bad move. This makes sure the defense is ran the way he wants. I’m really hoping though that we bring in a proven OC that will allow him to not have to worry about the offense and he can continue to execute on defense.

This is generally my feeling...

I’m not seriously worried about the Defense right now.

Our Offense? Yeah, I’m seriously worried there. No doubt.

I like this. Bringing in another DC could only cause confusion. We don’t need any of that.

How many other HC's are also the OC or DC?

I seem to remember a few but maybe that has changed.

Sean Peyton did it all when the Saints won it all. I think Fraiser did it with the Vikings this past year. Can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head.

Belichick, McCarthy.
Tebow?
you're thinking of JC
What's Jamaal Charles got to do with it?
you must be really short
Only on brains. And humor. And possibly a few other things that I won't go into detail about.
(almost forgot) this post pleases me greatly, because at long last we can say we have some real ...

me likey, now go get Calais Campbell so Crennel can reek utter devastation on the NFL...oh and resign Carr
Well

this is obviously just another example of what a cheap ass Clark Hunt is, he refuses to pay another coaches salary so he is making RAC do 2 jobs for the price of 1

sarcasm attempt fail
as it should be, but if we lose thomas as some have stated, or gibbs....will be crushing

especially if freaking thomas goes to the raiders. no. just no. no chief hof player should be coaching for the raiders.

...Where will Thomas go?

Who said he’s leaving?

big dan can u still play NT for kc

I working on joe phillips to come back and play NT to help out

Dig up Dan Williams while we're at it (although he'd fit better as a 3-4 end).

We need another body in there, to compete with Powe, Toribio (how is he still here??) and likely some draft pick.

I really like Kelly Gregg, but not as a starter—or as a backup. I think his time’s about up. Could take a look at coaching perhaps…

someone reported that they wouldnt be shocked if emmitt thomas ends up in oakland

a connection with their head coach or something

someone=some media guy in oakland
Hmm. They worked together with the Falcons....

Unless RAC names him coordinator (in name), he could leave for a promotion. Ass’t Head Coach maybe? That makes some sense I suppose.

Of course, it is Oakland—they could hire Dexter McCleon as secondary coach and I wouldn’t be surprised. Any skill that Dennis Allen had just got reduced by 10% as a consequence of his working conditions…

Well it is absolutely what I wanted

I hope I was right.

Now we need an OC, a QB, an Olineman or two, a #2 RB, ILB, DB depth

id like it if a special teams coach could be brought in for hoffman
A stud NT would be nice
shaun smith coming back

romeo will make him an all pro

hes not a nose tackle. he didnt play nose tackle in kc either.
Not close to an All Pro either.
He's got balls though.

Or he goes and gets em.

Completely different situation from Haley

Haley had an OC named Chan Gailey until he fired him 2 weeks before the season and installed his own offense. Crennel taking the reigns immediately means no confusion and its already his defense.

I just hope he remebers he has to coach the whole team.

I'm sure Scott will remind him if he has to ... attention to detail, yanno?
I just hope he remembers he has to coach the whole team

Late breaking news

In addition to his HC and DC duties, RC will be alternating in at NT.

i heard the gleam getting a second interview in tampa

marty ball

u got a choice hue jackson or al saunders for oc which one do u take

or i would like to no who your other choice is

Hue has my vote
Same here
And tell him to bring Mike Bush along too
can we get Bush w/o Hue?
Two birds is better than one Bush...or maybe not?

But I won’t complain if its just a Bush =) unless it involves the White House.

hue is the only one currently available.

And it would make sense for the Raiders to hold onto Al Saunders to keep the offense on track.

Sorry I made the mistake of using "Raiders" and "make sense" in the same sentence.
The problem with Hue or Al remains the same

Matt Cassel is incapable of running the vertical offense.

sounds about right

I pretty much expected it. I hope he gets a good OC in the mix soon.

why haven't we heard a couple names in the press about oc and confirmed interviews with crennal

we need to have pioli and romeo followed if they go into a pizza joint for info

At least they're making a statement about it, as in Crennel is the guy calling the shots on D

rather than have the Head Coach play musical coordinators just to over ride them and call the plays himself anyway. Thanks Haley, don’t see myself missing that anymore.

yep been saying that about haley all year he was the oc not muir
This is odd

Its not like the Chiefs and definitely not like Pioli to blurt out something before the team makes it official.

It's starting to look like Haley

was the one behind most of the paranoia at Arrowhead.

Yeah, things have definitely been less tight-lipped since he was fired.
Or since being exposed?

Lightening up a bit to ease up on the media pressure. Even if the accusations weren’t true it could just be a PR move.

Romeo's first press conference after being named interim HC

“Orton will start. Palko to third string”.

More than Haley ever said in all of his press conferences combined.

Maybe Pioli emulates his head coach and allows them to mold the team and their dealings more than we realize.

Nah, like RD said...

It happened as soon as RAC took over.

the next 12 months will be heavily scrutinized for sure

but I think it’s going to be interesting to see if this turns out to be true

or. they are making it appear that way. i hate to break it to haley haters. but the head coach has zero power compared to a gm like pioli

ive been around a gm like pioli, the head coach had about as much say as the lady working the front desk

Maybe a good sign that whoever the OC is will be a solid, veteran, established offensive mind, able to handle one side of the ball on his own?

I’d like to think so.

al saunders maybe
I'll take him. Where is he at right now???
home

in bed

sleeping

oc for the raiders but might be out soon
Do you guys know how to post videos to facebook?
Arggg!!!

Bring on the draft already!!!!

I used to be a DC

then I took a HC to the knee

Gimme Al...& that "O" line he had to work with...& a Hungry but Humble QB like Trent Green was...
It's really simple...

Romeo calling defensive plays >>>>>>>> Muir/Zorn/Haley calling offensive plays

I would imagine calling the defense would be much less difficult than calling the offense. Plus, Romeo will have leaders on defense to help him out.
