The Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator is...still unfilled. We don't know who it is but this update actually has a little bit of news. GM Scott Pioli talked with the guys at Sirius XM NFL Radio on Wednesday and was of course asked about the vacant offensive coordinator position.
"From the offensive coordinator position, we're talking internally, we're talking externally," Pioli said. "There's a lot of moving parts here as you know right now because even though there's been a lot of changes there are a lot of people remaining under contract with other teams that...they don't have to necessarily give you permission if they don't want. So it's still fluid right now."
So what can we learn from this? A couple of things, maybe.

First, they're talking to people on the outside and inside. Who is already on the staff that's a candidate? Muir says he won't be the OC again. Jim Zorn seems unlikely to get the job, according to Sam "Time Traveler" Mellinger of the KC Star. Assistant head coach Maurice Carthon is a former offensive coordinator and probably doesn't get enough attention from us as a candidate.
Second, they have candidates that are still under contract with another team. That could be a candidate on one of the Super Bowl teams or that could just be a candidate under contract with another team. Unfortunately, we don't know the names of any of these guys.
So, come to think of it, they're telling us the candidates could actually be anyone -- inside the building, outside the building, out-of-work or under contract with another team. And here I thought we were getting some real news...

How about Hue Douglass?
Why not Hue,we could learn some valuable stuff on how to take down the raiders, and other afc west teams.just throwing this out their.al saunders wouldnt come back to kc after they screwed him in the past.at least we know one thing Haley wont be calling them.

Hue Jackson?
Akr_Baby - January 26, 2012
You mean Hugh Jackson?
Only Hugh Douglas I can think of works at ESPN and was a defensive player.
ValkRider - January 26, 2012
LOL Hue
ValkRider - January 26, 2012
Hughe Douglas-Jacksson
played defensive end before he was OC, head coach and ESPN NFL analyst.

Hue Jackson
I’d love to see him hired as OC. He did a decent job as coach last year…the two areas he really screwed up in were 1) playing GM and making a horrible trade for Carson Palmer and 2) his end of year press conference (which he has admitted was a mistake). Neither are particularly problematic. He got really good results out of a spotty Raiders offense with a QB I think has been washed up for three years.
UCrawford - January 26, 2012
Totally agree. He would be good for our team.
Mr.Pibbs - January 26, 2012
Trouble with him is he can't seem to stay in one place for very long.

Really? I didn't know that.

I didn't either till I looked him up :)

Just say no to Hue
The guy is a cancer. Will throw anyone under the bus, anytime it benefits him. Is in love with himself and wants everybody else to love him too. You don’t want this guy around. I know this, trust me.
Don Piolie's Consigliere - January 26, 2012
You Have To Look At That In Context
First, the life of an NFL assistant is transitional…guys who stay with the same team for a decade are the exception, not the rule, and with good reason. Most of the time, if a guy is with the same team forever and he isn’t eventually the head coach or a coordinator, it means he isn’t much of a prospect. In Hue Jackson’s case, the transition was pretty clearly more about career progression than anything else. Since entering the NFL in 2002 (he was in college before) here’s his career arc:
2001-2002 Washington Redskins RB coach – pretty decent entry point after being a college offensive coordinator the previous year. Jackson coached RBs and QBs at USC and while coaching the RBs with Washington on Marty Schottenheimer’s and Steve Spurrier’s staffs, Stephen Davis put up two solid years. Jackson then got promoted
2003 Washington Redskins OC – Jackson ran an offense that finished bottom ten with Patrick Ramsey at QB and Trung Canidate as starting RB (Stephen Davis left for Carolina). Steve Spurrier was fired after the season and the Redskins cleaned house on the staff.
2004-2006 Cincinnati Bengals WR coach – Jackson oversees three excellent seasons from Chad Johnson and three very solid seasons from T.J. Houshmandzadeh. This leads to…
2007 Atlanta Falcons OC – Jackson has the misfortune on being the coordinator for college coach Bobby Petrino, who bailed out on his team in the middle of his first season as head coach. He also didn’t have Michael Vick (prison) and had to piece together an offense run by a combination of Joey Harrington, Chris Redman and Byron Leftwich (who was only available for three games), featuring an aging trio of Warrick Dunn, Algae Crumpler and Joe Horn. In a rare bright spot, he got the first 1,000 yard season out of Roddy White, however. After the season, new GM Thomas Dimitroff cleaned house on the staff. Not exactly Jackson’s fault. After which he moves to…
2008-2009 Baltimore Ravens QB coach – Jackson oversees Joe Flacco’s first two years in the NFL, during which he averages over 3,000 yards, 17 TDs and a 60+% completion percentage. Not bad for working with a rookie making the leap to the NFL from 1AA. He then gets promoted to…
2010 Oakland Raiders OC – oversees a top 10 offense run by Jason Campbell, featuring a breakout season by Darren McFadden. Made all the more impressive by the fact that not one Oakland receiver broke 700 yards that year. He then gets promoted again.
2011 Oakland Raiders HC – Injuries to McFadden and Campbell (as well as a late acquisition of Carson Palmer) knock Oakland to 16th for points scored but they remain top 10 for yardage. Oakland also sees the emergence of Michael Bush, rookie Denarius Moore and long-time disappointment Darius Heyward-Bey as legitimate starters, despite losing three year leading receiver Zach Miller to free agency. Jackson is fired after the season, however, when new GM Reggie McKenzie decides to go with a new hire for his staff.
Basically, Jackson appears to be a pretty good coach and offensive mind. He seems to have a very good track record of getting solid to great performance out of his WRs, and for compensating with other aspects of the offense when he doesn’t have much WR talent. Until his exit in Oakland, attitude doesn’t appear to have been an issue at all…just unfortunate timing. And wherever he’s gone, he only seems to have left in order to take a promotion somewhere else. His comments to end his time in Oakland were unfortunate, but since he’d just be an OC if he were hired in Kansas City, and since that would likely entail him being more of an Xs and Os guy than a motivator, I don’t think his final remarks in Oakland should be considered a fatal flaw. Personally, I say the Chiefs should hire him…I think if anyone can get good performance out of Cassel, he seems to have the ability.

I'm saying its someone currently on NE staff, just not sure who
did McDaniels actually sign a long term contract or did he just sign on to help finish out this year?
banshee_01 - January 26, 2012
He is their new OC after the current guy goes off to Penn State
KingChief - January 26, 2012
I understand thats what they are saying
but I dont remember seeing anywhere that he is signed for longer then just to finish this season. And if thats the case for him it would make more sense to be the OC here as we all know Belichick isnt going anywhere anytime soon, so he would be a coach in waiting here. Not that I want that at all, Im just saying
banshee_01 - January 26, 2012
He's a head coach in waiting in NE, just not for NE.
He’s guaranteed to have success there, which means he’ll be a hot HC prospect again maybe as early as 2013.
Brsrkr - January 26, 2012
yes but
after the last go around GM’s are going to question, is it really him being that good or Brady and Belichick making him look that good
banshee_01 - January 26, 2012
That's true. I think he's counting on basic human fickleness.
And maybe he just wants to be back where he’s comfortable for a while.
Brsrkr - January 26, 2012
..and look how awesome that NE offense became once he joined the staff
Brady probably had his worst game of the entire season.
CapsLockKey - January 26, 2012

That Maurice Carthon was Crennel’s OC in 05 and 06. Granted they weren’t very succesfull years. Wouldn’t surprise me to give it another go…Parcells man written all over it.
groundedchevy - January 26, 2012
He Was Also OC In Detroit
Had three years of being an OC and he was uniformly horrible, He’s also never impressed me as a running backs coach…I couldn’t name one RB who improved under his tutelage and can name at least one (Edgerrin James) who seriously underachieved.
UCrawford - January 26, 2012
There's that one guy from the Chiefs..what's his name? Jameel something? Jamaal?
GenericBrand - January 26, 2012
Carthon's job was to berate him.
I don’t think Carthon’s much appreciated by Chiefs players. I would not like to see him become OC.
Brsrkr - January 26, 2012
I disagree. i think hes greatly respected.
SDChief - January 26, 2012
We'll just have to disagree on that until a player clears the air.
All I can say is that I’ve seen him at training camp, and I wouldn’t want to work for him. This is coming from a guy who spent a lot of time around drill sergeants and didn’t think they were all that bad.
Brsrkr - January 26, 2012
The Knock On Him In Cleveland
Was that his plays lacked any kind of originality, unpredictability or common sense. He apparently liked running a lot of stuff for the fullback, regardless of whether it achieved results. Want to guess what Carthon’s position was as a player?
UCrawford - January 26, 2012
Charles Was Good Before Carthon Arrived
And let’s not forget that the brain trust of Haley and Carthon apparently thought so little of Charles that they kept him on the bench behind a washed-up Larry Johnson and wanted to trade him for a third round pick. So yeah, that makes Carthon kind of stupid in my opinion.
UCrawford - January 26, 2012
to me
if it was someone already on the staff, why are they waiting so long to announce it, just seems to me they want someone that is still in the SB right now
banshee_01 - January 26, 2012
I think that article may have something to do with no OC hire yet
KingChief - January 26, 2012
The first time I read it...
My initial thought, based on the wording, was he was suggesting teams that just made head coach changes that still have old offensive coaches on staff that they haven’t let go yet. The ones that come to mind are Tampa, Oakland and Miami. Tampa’s OC is a guy whose name has come up before in OC here(I think more because of Haley) and Daboll in Miami has a history with Crennel.
GenericBrand - January 26, 2012
Al Saunders worked with Zorn too in Washington so there's a connection there as well
And iff the Chiefs want to keep Zorn around as a QB coach to keep some consistency in place for Cassel then Saunders could also be a fit.
GenericBrand - January 26, 2012
do it
best OC we’ve had in forever. probably wouldn’t want to come back tho since they shafted him on the HC job when vermeil retired and picked up that clown Herm instead. but that was peterson, so who knows…
ExtraMetal - January 26, 2012
If Saunders is the route, decastro better be the pick
Your guards better be able to pull in Al’s scheme
mushin - January 26, 2012 via mobile
That makes sense.
Or, he could have been indulging in some regret about how he didn’t get to talk to McD before the NE job came open.
Brsrkr - January 26, 2012
That could be too
If the report is true that the Chiefs shut down the Rams when they asked to talk to Crennel then I could see that going the other way as well.
GenericBrand - January 26, 2012

You forgot screen pass / outlet pass for a 3 yard loss.
Followed by Jones up the middle for no gain.
TRSChief - January 26, 2012
For the screen pass
you need to add the caveat that it was thrown by Matt Cassel, so the ball took 8 seconds to get from his hand to the runningback.
DanielH123 - January 26, 2012
or to the DB
KingChief - January 26, 2012
get al saunders
Manning looks like he will get released if healthy pioli needs to jump on him this will elevate this chiefs to super bowl status and al saundres offense is perfect fit for manning even so with all our weapons and a real good defense a improved oline and more cap room and better situation then most teams he would be crushing people
rickrock58 - January 26, 2012 via mobile
if we were to get Manning, and I dont see it happening
then we wouldnt need an OC because Manning is pretty much the OC in the offense
banshee_01 - January 26, 2012
Let Manning choose
That could be part of the lure of KC…. Tell Manning he could Run the O and bring in someone to assist from the sidelines…give his dad the job..hell is mom is probably better than what we have had…

Except for New England and Denver.
So yeah, he was a failure for one season in St. Louis when they had a ton of injuries and were still learning his offense.
But he’s off the table anyway, so I don’t know why people can’t let go.

Sam Mellinger/Nick Wright made a scary-ass combined point yesterday:
If Jim Zorn is the OC next year (combined with Romeo hiring and Mellinger’s report on org. behavior), how could conclude anything other than nobody wants to work for the Chiefs with Pioli at the helm?
Clearly that doesn’t mean it’s true, but it would be a natural conclusion. I hope for the Chiefs they find a great OC, if only for that terrible story to go away.

Please. He’s been with the team three years, knows how it works, and wanted the job. He’s not an idiot and not dumb. Also, it’s been reported that the Chief’s OC job is one of the more popular topics at the Senior Bowl, and that Crennel has been a popular guy down there.
This sensationalistic media in KC is crap.

kc571 - January 26, 2012
Right.
Because NFL coordinator positions are a dime a dozen.
Tarkus - January 26, 2012
My pick for OC is Hue Jackson!
Every where hes been except Atlanta hes done good things. He would have a field day with our WRs. I doubt KC is interested because Hue has been available for to long and hes a proponet for the power blocking scheme which I would love to see KC get back to. I think the zone scheme should be outlawed, the bigger D lineman absolutely dominate which is why we have a hard time beating Oak, SD, Balti. Not to mention they are probally not not interested in a 1 or 2 year deal, because Hue will be a HC sooner rather than later.
Hue was a college QB at Pacific.
He led California’s high-powered offense in 1996 as its offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, he helped lead the Golden Bears to an Aloha Bowl berth.
Jackson served as USC’s offensive coordinator from 1997-2000, helping to recruit and develop players, including QB Carson Palmer, with whom he was later reunited in Cincinnati and Oakland.
In 01 and 02 under Marty and Spurrier he coached Stephen Davis to 1430 yards as RB coach.
From 04 to 06 in Cincy as WRs coach, Housh and Cinco became one of the most prolific WRs tandems in NFL History.
In 07 he was coordinator with the Falcons under Petrino, Emmit Thomas and it didn’t turn out so well. Vick was sidelined for the season and the Falcons were forced to play with 2 undrafted rookies on the O line.
In 08 and 09 he coached Flacco as QB coach and Flacco was the first rookie QB to win 2 playoff games in NFL History. Ravens made the playoffs both years Hue was there. Hue also replaced Jim Zorn as QB coach.
In 2010, under Jackson’s guidance, the Raiders offense finished fourth in the AFC and sixth in the NFL in scoring (25.6 points per game) also finished fifth in the AFC and 10th in the NFL in total offense (354.6 yards per game) and second in the NFL and AFC in rushing (155.9 yards per game). The Raiders more than doubled their scoring output from the previous year, totaling 410 points. Under Jackson’s offense, RB Darren McFadden finished the season with 1,157 yards rushing on 223 carries for a 5.2 average YPC and 7 rushing touchdowns. McFadden also had 47 receptions for 507 yards and 3 touchdowns. His total numbers were 1,664 total yards and 10 total touchdowns for the 2010 NFL season. Making McFadden the NFL’s 5th leader in total yards from scrimmage for the 2010 season.
Hue transformed McFadden and H. Bay into respectable players when many thought both were busts. Zach Miller loved him. I think Hue would be a good fit for the kind of offense that the Chiefs need to run.
BigRatt - January 26, 2012
all good points
but I find it hard to believe that Darth Pioli hires anyone remotely resembling a loose cannon. And hue is pictured next to the definition after his stay with the Raiders.
ExtraMetal - January 26, 2012
He threw his team straight under the damn bus
no thank you
PVChiefsfan - January 26, 2012
That Would Be A Problem If He Was Head Coach
Not so much as just an offensive coordinator. As coordinator, he’s more responsible for the X’s and O’s than the motivation.
UCrawford - January 26, 2012
Didn't Weis give press conferences when he was OC?
I don’t want Jackson throwing our offense under the bus after a loss…it could happen
PVChiefsfan - January 26, 2012
Considering The Circumstances
I seriously doubt it would be much of a risk with Jackson. He was a new head coach under a lot of pressure who had no idea if he was getting to keep his job because the guy who hired him died and he’d just been eliminated from the playoffs. He needs some more seasoning before he’s ready to be a head coach again, but I don’t think one bad press conference means he’s unsuited to be a coordinator in the right situation.
UCrawford - January 27, 2012
And
I’m also willing to bet that part of the reason Weis got pushed in front of the mic was because Todd Haley was a petulant asshole who hated press conferences and just didn’t feel like doing it. Crennel doesn’t seem to have that problem.
UCrawford - January 27, 2012
There isnt an OC available with a better resume, maybe other than Al Saunders! I just dont see KC going back to that type of offense under a Defensive minded HC.
BigRatt - January 26, 2012

KingChief - January 26, 2012

SDChief - January 26, 2012
The clip I've seen most, Boldin was yelling at Haley, and it looked like Haley was telling him "Don't call me thtat."
This was going on while Haley was trying to call the offense during a playoff game.
Brsrkr - January 26, 2012
so you have inside sources to tell you that
if that was the case then why in the hell would Crennel even consider the job let alone say he wanted it, pretty sure he could have had probably any of the other open HC jobs this year if he so chose
banshee_01 - January 26, 2012
