ESPN's Mel Kiper released one of his 2012 NFL mock drafts last week and had the Kansas City Chiefs selecting Penn State DT Devon Still. It would appear he's the early favorite in these mock drafts because Don Banks of SI.com has the same pick.

Given the Chiefs' need for an offensive tackle, they could pounce on Iowa's Reiff if he falls past No. 9 Miami or opt for Stanford tackle Jonathan Martin. But Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli knows you can never have enough talented defensive linemen, and Still is a top-10-rated prospect who can provide a disruptive force in the middle of the Chiefs' 3-4 front.
I'm all about picking the best player available, and even adding some defensive line help. And, really, I'm probably never going to argue too much if they keep investing in the trenches.
That said, it'd be tough to stomach another first round pick on a defensive lineman. GM Scott Pioli has indicated publicly that the offensive line needs to get better so I still think that'll be the pick but Still is getting tabbed to the Chiefs in the early rounds.
We'll see these picks change numerous times over the following weeks and months. Check out the full mock draft at SI.com, where Banks predicts a trade near the top.
Is it April yet?

I hope either
they can add a quality O-lineman like Mike Adams in round 2 or fix that position via free agency.
I also feel that it’s a lot harder to find a big time nose tackle and if this kid can fill that void then take him.
golfbard - January 27, 2012
Imagine a ngata, Justin smith, or Alex smith
Thats all the defense needs. A big presence on the dline. Glenn, Osemele, Sanders, or Adams in the second would be great.
Not a huge fan of a first round dl again but not totally against it
Kcbiggyblue - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Never knew defenses need a bust QB playing on them
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Wasn't the steelers beast de they had for a decade Alex smith?
Kcbiggyblue - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Aaron
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Knew it started with an a but not on a computer
Thanks. I’d love to have a freak of nature de but no way they need to keep looking in the first round for them and missing.
Kcbiggyblue - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Aaron nor Justin would have worked in our scheme
Ngata.. likely but they moved him from NT to DE to take away some abuse on his knees, which he would still get quite a bit as a 2 gap linemen
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
I know but, those guys are good
Our des will never have big numbers but, it wouldn’t hurt to switch things up a little bit
Kcbiggyblue - January 27, 2012
With how our NT's have been
It’s great we have had good run defending DE’s, now if we had a stud NT then yes I could see a switch to one of the DE’s being better at pass rushing
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
We can probably wait till rd 3 or 4 for Mike Adams
nateforchiefs - January 27, 2012
Uhm no he will likely be gone at the bottom of the first
BAMFSpecialOps - January 28, 2012
No thanks
He can’t play NT and there are better 1st round prospects for 3-4 DE.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
agreed
And I hope to Tebow that KC doesn’t invest another 1st round pick on a DE
stagdsp - January 27, 2012 via mobile
I agree
I mean I wouldn’t completely hate it as long as they flipped Dorsey for a 3rd or so but even then it’s still not ideal.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
When has Dorsey proven at all to be worth a 3rd rounder?
I think wed be licky to get a 5th, abd Pioli is going to be looking for a first or second
ChiefWarPaint - January 27, 2012
To 4-3 team Dorsey is worth a "3rd or so".
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
How? When has he ever proved that?
ChiefWarPaint - January 27, 2012
He's three years removed from being the best 4-3 DT prospect in the league.
He’s produced at a high rate at his position, which is out of position, for the last two years. Third or fourth round is right.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
This year and last year
Good run stoppers don’t grow on trees, especially when they manage to be good run stoppers despite being in a system that doesn’t fit them.
MNchiefsfan - January 28, 2012
Teams like NO or Chicago could overpay for him a bit
They want to win NOW, so they want a guy with potential to step in immediately. If you’re NO & picking late, wouldn’t the local boy be worthy of a 3rd round flyer? Actually I’d want a 3rd and a conditional 2nd or third the next year.
jmcgoblue - January 27, 2012
Maybe the Colts would, new HC that was a DC
That defense needs help too
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
I was going to make the same comment
but I would make the case that only IF DeCastro is off the board. Our OL needs more help than the DL IMO. But this is all dependant on what we do in FA, like signing some stud OL and trading Dorsey (and no, I don’t think a 3rd is unimaginable at all).
shotty - January 27, 2012
this ^^^
upamtn - January 27, 2012
If he grades out as a Richard Seymore level DE, then I'm all for it
Then take Alameda Ta’amu in the 2nd, Audie Cole in the 3rd and our D could be spectacular. I really want a dominant defense here.
Try to sign Chris Myers from the Texans as a FA (excellent G/C in ZBS) and roll with Mims or Richardson (or a surprise Free Agent RT) with help from the TE.
jmcgoblue - January 27, 2012
I'd be okay with it. If there's one position on D we need an upgrade at, that would be it
Still, I think we could go offensive tackle in the first and maybe grab the NT from UW later on.
SoCalChief17 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Have ANY scouts projected this kid at NT?
Seems like a waste of talent playing out of position
KansasCityShuffle - January 27, 2012
Nope.
So that’s why I don’t understand why this pick seems to keep popping up.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
6'5 310 is really not the build of a 2 gap NT
And he doesn’t have the frame to put on 40lbs. He would make a really good 3-4 DE.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
Hes more like 6-4
ChiefWarPaint - January 27, 2012

stagdsp - January 27, 2012 via mobile
He's a great penetrating de, both pass rush and run stopping wise.
No way we move this guy to nt. I’d rather move dorsey and see what he can do. Or trade him.
Kcbiggyblue - January 27, 2012 via mobile
i don't like Reiff
he had a crappy year. wasn’t even a featured blocker in iowa’s offense. It was bad enough I wondered if he was playing hurt.
IF
there are no quarterbacks we don’t like that high
or Offensive tackles we don’t like that high
I wouldn’t complain if we got Stills.
If you can’t block the Wilforks or Hampton or Smiths or ect ect, better have your own versions.
rdc - January 27, 2012
If you can't block the Wilforks or Hamptons or Smiths... it won't matter if you have your own versions.
Falcon58 - January 27, 2012
Trade down and pick up another second rounder
Get a NT (Poe) and OT (not sure who, but maybe Adams) with the first and one of two second round picks.
7chiefs7 - January 27, 2012
This.
Tarkus - January 27, 2012
I'm guessing Pioli trades down too.
bktzoo - January 27, 2012
I think he could become a Kris Jenkins type player eventually.
At the very least hell take over for Dorsey and has All-pro potential which Im all for on our DL.
Still has plenty of potential, and I know Crennel would love the pick.
ChiefWarPaint - January 27, 2012
Kris Jenkins?
Jenkins was 360 lbs and had the frame to carry it.

severn58 - January 27, 2012
So many ways we can go to improve this football team.
However, the most important way is how we address the QB.
1. Do we try to sneak by another year with Cassel or Orton and grab a QB out of next years draft class? Are we going to improve as a team and put us out of position to grab a QB? Or are we going to fall off a cliff and grab another top 10 or even 5 pick? Is next years QB list any better?
2. Or do we swap a few picks this year to grab a Rook that hasn’t proven anything yet or a vet that is coming here to die?
Until this position is addressed, I don’t care if the first pick is a RB, OL, DL, ILB, TE, trade back, trade up, or CB.
XtaC69Chief - January 27, 2012
There seem to be a couple pretty good DL prospects early in this draft...
But yeah, DL is kind of the last thing I want to see in the first round right now. Dorsey is disappointment at this point and Jackson was a reach at 3rd overall… Not to mention taking big men for the future seems iffy, considering professional football could possibly be phasing them out — Roger Goodell mentioned the possibility of eliminating the 3-point stance all together, for “safety”.
In the league right now, it would seem to make sense to put more speed on the field. Just like stocking up on defensive backs is smart, dropping early picks on fat boys may not be.
I dunno. Just my thoughts. It may be the year for an O-lineman. Go figure.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Did he really?
craig in calgary - January 27, 2012
Yeah it was a couple years ago I think.
He mentioned it as a possibility. I’d have a hard time seeing that flying, but you never know… the dude just got a 5-year contract extension.
But yeah, I read it straight from NFL.com.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
That's a crazy ass idea.
So three point stance isn’t safe but adding more 250lbs guys that run 4.4 fortys is? Go Roger.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
Yeah in a way I get it.
I mean we all saw the passing in the NFL this year. Pretty ridiculous to be honest, but a lot if fans actually think that is what makes football exciting. Passing and scoring. I personally disagree, but that’s another topic.
The NFL is about money first and foremost, unfortunately, and if that’s what will sell tickets then that’s what they will do, and have been doing.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Fans that think that need to turn on a CFL game.
It’s almost unwatchable for me.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
It's more boring than a defensive battle IMO
but we may be a minority.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
I like the D-line and O-line picks, but..
I honestly think we had a glaring hole last year that everyone seems to be overlooking. We have no depth at Safety. Berry is great as long as he is healthy, and Lewis is okay, but not great. Once Berry went down our secondary took a huge hit last year. I would not mind seeing us invest an early pick, 1st or 2nd, in a safety. This would add depth, and improve the talent level at the position. Lets face it, once you get past Berry and Lewis, our safeties are terrible. If we can get another starter, and have Lewis as a backup, I think that would be great. I think this needs to be addressed by no later than the 3rd round. Am I way off base on this?
jskirk71 - January 27, 2012
There is not a safety worth the 11/12th pick
2/3 rounds maybe
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Antonio Allen in the 3rd.
I think that would be a huge pickup for us. Can probably beat out the McGraw/Langford/Piscitelli debacle that we currently have as depth. Could possibly be a starting caliber player in a couple of years giving us flexibility with both S positions.
citadelchief - January 27, 2012
+26
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
Why are we looking for backups in the 3rd?
We should be looking for starters in at least the 1st thru 4th rounds if we can find them.
Falcon58 - January 27, 2012
Only if we have a terrible roster.
That was the case a couple years ago.
When you have a decent roster, you are looking for starters in the 1st and 2nd, potential/future starters (which Allen is) in the 3rd-5th, and long shots in the 6th and 7th.
citadelchief - January 27, 2012
All 1st thru 4th round players are potential starters.
That’s basically what I meant. Looking for guys that can be starters.
Falcon58 - January 27, 2012
We're probably not going to find any immediate starters in the 3rd and 4th rds.
We’ll find guys who can develop into starters. That’s the kind of player that Allen is. He can develop into a starter for us.
citadelchief - January 27, 2012
yes! would love Allen in the 3rd
right after DeCastro and ? ?
upamtn - January 27, 2012
right after DeCastro and a keg?
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
as you wish :-)
upamtn - January 27, 2012
Someone did bring up a good point in an earlier thread
LG is not a huge hole, Lilja can still play rather well there.. think that will make the chance of getting DeCastro lower?
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Agreed
Plus, the Chiefs could pick up a guy like Senio Kelemete in the 4th or 5th and Lilja can train him one or two years like Weigmann trained Hudson
TheValleybetterthanPAC12 - January 27, 2012
Because he has the potential to start and because of his versatility.
He would be a utility player for a couple seasons in sub packages and would probably see alot of snaps. With the league going to big WRs and TEs, a guy like Allen would be enormously valuable and he’s probably the only player in this draft who’s already trained to handle that right out of the gate because of the position he played in college.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
We have other positions that could use a starter that we can draft in the 3rd.
Falcon58 - January 27, 2012
But you also don't need to fill every position in the draft.
We don’t have that many “needs” for new starters either. A couple here and there but nothing serious. Really we need to build up our depth and find these potential guys and develop them into what you need. Other then RT, NT and QB there’s really no pressing starter needs on this team and two of those three you can find guys in the mid to late rounds. Safety depth is a huge need and having players to create more favorable matchups is always a need.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
Have to look at Jackson in the late rounds IMO
The talent is there, and we would have Berry keeping him in line
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
I was looking at Iloka in the mid to late rounds. Has some great size and stats.
Could play FS or SS. Can cover WR in a 3 receiver set.
Falcon58 - January 27, 2012
Showed tighter in the hips than I thought he would in the 1 on 1 drills at the Sr Bowl practices
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Read that too. But overall, a good report. Flexibility can be worked on.
Drives on the ball good. Can make plays.
Falcon58 - January 27, 2012
I'm torn on him, I saw some tape of him playing S and playing deep which he did not look comfortable
I tried to write that off as not wanting to give up a big cushion underneath for an easy completion, etc. Then he switched to CB and looked better, that switch could have easily hidden some of the tightness because you are allowed so much contact at that level.
Got the frame, and has shown some skill to be a deep safety or a ‘TE killer’ but also could be very limited at this level if he can not flip his hips quicker
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Iloka and Allen are slated around the same round at this point
And for our needs Allen > Iloka.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
Allen would be a terrific addition
slide him in somewhere on the depth chart while we wave byebye to Jersey Shores
upamtn - January 27, 2012
This.
And you don’t need to draft safety depth in the first or second round. Lewis was a steal and we can afford to be patient and picky when looking for depth because the starters are set.
GenericBrand - January 27, 2012
Barron would be nice if they intend to trade down..
I think berry and Lewis need some rest. Can’t have them out there every single play of the year. They’ll get injured from weardown. That being said depth is not a top need. T is the biggest need but no reason to address it in the first.
Kcbiggyblue - January 27, 2012 via mobile
We do not need an in the box safety
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
I would disagree.
With the way the league is going, and specifically with the way tight ends are shredding defenses, a safety who can play linebacker is probably a pretty valuable thing.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Which is not what we need
We have Berry for that, we need a good cover guy or an all around safety that can cover a TE in man.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
SpecOps
You seen any tape on the safety from South Florida? I have seen his name (Jerell Young) on a couple of mock drafts but don’t know anything about him.
TheValleybetterthanPAC12 - January 27, 2012
Nope
NFP wasn’t too nice on him, Struggles in coverage without the instincts to constantly put himself around the ball. Most sites have pretty much those same things, a late round/UDFA pick who is a strict in the box SS
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
No
Berry is those things. He’d be wasted pigeon-holed into the box in more ways than one.
For one thing, his talents extend far beyond that. For another, he isn’t that big. He’s a hard hitter, and he’s tough, but he’s 6 feet flat and he will wear down.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Right cause the way he was used was not an in the box safety attacking the run
Gotcha
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Lol keep acting like you know everything, big dog.
It’ll probably take you far.
I’ve watched this guy for more than his one year with the Chiefs, I watched him for three years in college as well and he’s a phenomenal talent at safety. Would you want Cam Newton as just a running back or just as a pure pocket passer? If so, I think that’s stupid. What a waste.
Yes, Eric Berry can play up in the box. But that’s what’s so great about him: it’s just one of his many talents. You use a guy like this all over the field. Berry’s most exciting plays are when he’s behind the rest of the D, grabs an overthrown ball and either flips the field or takes it to the house. Not only would you be wasting his talents, but he is simply not built for the role. His career would be shortened.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
I'm not talking about at Tenn
I’m talking about in the pros, with us, last year. We sent him on run contain nearly every play
At Tenn he was a FS roaming ballhawk, I watched him too, lil pup
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
We needed Berry on the run do to lack of actual run defense.
I’d wager he sent himself on run contain as often as anything.
None of this means Berry should exclusively be used that way, nor does it negate any points I’ve made against your theory and why it isn’t a good idea.
You’ll see, though, so no point arguing about it really. I’m just glad Romeo knows more about this stuff than you I guess lol..
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Which is why we need a cover S that can be an upgrade to Lewis if picking a safety that high
Not a in the box safety like Barron when we have a guy capable of that in Berry, not sure how you are not following, but by all means keep talking.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Whatever dude.
bamachief5558 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
I would prefer to find safety depth in FA
I think Lewis is a good starter. I’m not sure who’s available, but I think it’d be better if we could get a safety in FA and save the draft pick for other positions. I’d really like to see several OL picks, ILB, NT, and of course a QB.
7chiefs7 - January 27, 2012
Michael Griffin and Chris Harris will both be available.
Neither has played at a superstar level over the past couple of seasons, but they both have the talent to challenge Kendrick Lewis.
Tough to know what kind of contracts they’ll be looking at though.
citadelchief - January 27, 2012
Apparently many teams will be over the salary cap so..
I see some safety depth coming from places
least expected..
cyberry - January 27, 2012
Much rather would..
draft an OL with the first pick and then take Poe in the 2nd or maybe even Burfict.
AhQueeNo - January 27, 2012
I haven't seen Poe or Burflict falling to the 11/12 pick in the 2nd round on any mock
Trading back to 21 (Cinncy’s 2nd 1st round pick) makes the most sense to me. I would be good grabbing either a RT or Poe in that spot.
Off topic, but I work with a lot of Vols fans and I am starting to warm to the idea of signing BJ Coleman if he falls far enough in the draft.
TheValleybetterthanPAC12 - January 27, 2012
Poe won't driop but Burfict likely will ...
… but I do NOT want Burfict, certainly wouldn’t spend more than a 3rd on the guy … tons of raw talent but his head’s … not in this universe
upamtn - January 27, 2012
People said the same thing..
about Ray Lewis.
AhQueeNo - January 27, 2012
No, that is getting out of hand now
Ray was a playmaker, and wasn’t nearly as far behind as Burfict is. Burfict had a HORRID season, more regression in terms of penalties, benched for his bowl game, reports now that he couldnt even make the plays/figure out assignments the WLB did that for him…
BAMFSpecialOps - January 27, 2012
Okay, OR
Hightower…give me either of those guys. All I know is we need a more talent at the poistion. Belcher is a glorified back up and would have been if Siler had not been hurt.
AhQueeNo - January 27, 2012

SILB in our scheme is not really a sexy position
BAMFSpecialOps - January 28, 2012
