Yesterday morning a buddy of mine called me up to tell me about a big fire out at a house in Loch Lloyd, which is just south of Kansas City, Mo. Loch Lloyd is a very, very nice area with very, very big houses. (As a blogger, I can obviously relate to this living in the lap of luxury.)
And he also told me that the rumor out that way is that Chiefs QB Matt Cassel, who lives in the area, saved the day by warning the neighbors and calling the police. I really wanted to blog about this story but unfortunately we don't (always) run this blog like the wild, wild west where anything and everything is posted.
So we didn't post it and now I wake up this morning to hear the real story, which is basically the one we heard yesterday.
KMBC 9 did the real reporting and multiple neighbors tell them Cassel saw his neighbor's house on fire, ran over there ringing the doorbell, banging on the door and circling the house to alert them until they came out. The neighbor realized what was up, exited the house and the emergency crews showed up.
Cassel, of course, didn't want any credit for his actions (though his neighbors say he should get some). A neighbor passed this along from Cassel to KMBC: "I wasn't heroic at all. I just ran up to the house and alerted them. The real heroes are the firefighters."
We'll complain about Cassel on the field but it's hard to find anyone in the community, especially in his own neighborhood after this incident, to say anything negative about the guy off the field.

It would be so much easier if Matt had Ryan Leaf's personality
Id let him watch my kids. Not so hot on him running my football team.
mushin - January 28, 2012 via mobile
You mean his ability?
Pretty sure you wouldnt want Ryan Leaf watching your kids… :)
KSU-Chief - January 28, 2012
No he means personality.
He is saying it would make things easier if we disliked Matt for something other than his QB abilities.
davidv - January 28, 2012
Ah I get it...
It is like two paragraphs.
Leaf’s Personality so we could hate him easier
His current personality= watching his kids…
I was like “Man you must not like your kids if you want Ryan Leaf watching them!”
KSU-Chief - January 28, 2012
I'm not a big fan of my kids:)
Kidding. I love em. Now I dont have to take out the trash.

So would we rather have a guy like cassel or someone like ben? I’d take cassel some things are more important than winning.
kc_okerix - January 28, 2012 via mobile
I agree, but wod rather have a guy like waters or manni
Great player whose a good person.
mushin - January 28, 2012 via mobile
I'll take Cassel over Waters at QB any day
GracieKal - January 28, 2012
After last season, I'm willing to try waters at QB
mushin - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Couldn't be worse than Palko, that's for sure.
Sudden - January 28, 2012
This makes me feel like I put way too much energy into the want to win. Bad feeling.
It is similar to the feeling of having Matt Cassel divagate a very talented team from progressing as a team. He’s good at making you feel things, and I feel like we’re not good enough with MC. No surprise there.
Time and time again Matt has shown us that he is a great man/person/teammate/
actor, and we should not be surprised when he leaves Arrowhead with only good things to say about our GM and FO.Chiefs_swagger - January 28, 2012
There has never been much debate
on the quality of human being Matt Cassel is, he just seems like a great person.
He may not be the best Qb, but he is a stand up guy. This reminds me of the Pope story.
While awesome, it won’t help the Chiefs win football games. At the same time this was good for the Chiefs image…considering.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012 via mobile
this ... Cassel is a fabulous person, and that's never been a question
I’d put him on the All Time Great Guy Team right now … but I’d rather have Orton at QB
very much like the Pope story, and here we are, most of us ready to draft Dwayne Allen or Coby Fleener and say goodbye to Pope on the field (or one of the TE’s)
but at that, I’d rather … if I must … lose with Cassel than win with Big Ben or Mike Vick or …
upamtn - January 28, 2012
That is why
we will never be the Raiders on the field and I AM DAMN PROUD OF THAT!
KSU-Chief - January 28, 2012
Yep, Signing Vick would've made me turn away from the Chiefs till the administration that brought him in was gone, along with Vick himself
GracieKal - January 28, 2012
agree
SDChief - January 28, 2012
exactly. which is why I cannot stand to read chief fans calling him personal names and then turning it into his name
cass “hole”
really?
i just would like to have one example of when he has been one
SDChief - January 28, 2012
Well there was that pass to Eric Weddle that he gift wrapped...
But other than that…
No, Matt Cassel seems to be a really good guy. Some fans just seem to enjoy giving people retarded nick names at all times. It is the Jason Whitlock syndrome, if you don’t have anything interesting to say, you just make up a goofy nickname for someone, stir up some nonsense and serve.
If Cassel could pull it together and become a great QB, I think he could be a great Kansas Citian for the rest of his career as a person. We have seen three years of the guy’s play and it is now hard to imagine a real scenario where that is the actual outcome.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
They're kicking off their anual charity drive too
The two combined should shift the focus a little. Now if they listen to their new PR guy…
kcfanintx - January 29, 2012
Not even going to take the opportunity to take shots with "Yea, buts..."
Matty Nice is a class-act. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for what this guy does in the community.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
rec'd and much respect and appreciation for the comment!

I think he's a really great guy
And I stayed in his corner until a couple of games before he went down for the season. I wish he was the guy to lead our team but, alas, I don’t think it’s meant to be.
cowboyChief - January 28, 2012
just said that to my bro
I wish he was a better qb because he seems like a great person.

It’s cool to see you could get through this with no “but”….
Most, it’s obvious cannot. I knew it as soon as I saw the headline. As I’ve said, if Cassel cured cancer most fans on here would bitch about him putting doctors out of work.
Cassel will prove his worth on the field this year as well.
I don’t know if he saved a tragedy, but it’s good we never found out.

In the case of a fire every moment counts. Glad the couple caught it and no one was hurt.

kcfanintx - January 29, 2012
Another clutch performance from Matty Nice.
Tarkus - January 28, 2012
I guess this settles it
Now he’s going to start for the Chiefs next season
Buck'O - January 28, 2012 via iPhone app
Maybe he'll do better without Haley?
Think about it, the best season he had in KC is also the season where Haley was most hands off, he had Weis to do the heavy lifting with Cassel. The first season Haley was OC and HC, this last season he was defacto OC and HC. Maybe Cassel sans Haley could be a good QB?
Either that or I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines….
nateforchiefs - January 28, 2012
I think
Cassel’s success mainly depends on massively improving the o-line. If he has time he’ll complete passes. The other factor will be how well Charles bounces back. The bottom line is that the performance of the other 10 players will determine how good he does because he’s just not the kind of guy to shoulder the load and will the team to win. Chiefs will ain’t Matt Cassel’s. Ya know what I mean?
Buck'O - January 28, 2012 via iPhone app
So I did pick the wrong week to quit amphetamines?
And I agree with you. The best chance of offensive success is getting a great QB. But if you dont have that and cant get one then the task changes to improving the other 10 players and having it rub off on the QB, instead of the the QB improving the 10 players around him.
nateforchiefs - January 28, 2012
you might save your stash for next season;)
Buck'O - January 28, 2012 via iPhone app
This season could have been a down year for MC. There are those out there that believe that may be the case. In order for me to feel comfortable with MC again:
D) We’d need Romeo to hire someone that will put some real fire into our offense. Kevin Gilbride? No way he’d leave NY…
B) Seal up the o-line.
O) Sign Bowe.
W) Acquire not one, but two more quality RBs. Ideally one in the draft, and another in FA. RBs are the most likely position to get injured. And, if MC is running the show it becomes vital to have multiple solid healthy runners to carry the load. Jack Battle may have the planets best name, but wouldn’t you rather see: Charles, Tolbert, Dex, Ballard, McClain
E) Add another veteran WR to the mix. Short list: Garcon, Royal, Amendola
All of this would make me feel better with MC. It’s a lot to ask, but it’s possible.
Chiefs_swagger - January 28, 2012
I think this is true
I think they have handled Cassel terribly, and robbed him of his confidence and his ability to take chances.
I will still take Cassel over Orton because I think he is much more competitive and tougher than Orton,
I think Cassel will improve if he is the QB next year.
With that said, if there is a better option, or a rookie/Stanzi who maybe take over mid-season if not performing then that’s fine with me.
Except for a trade up for RG3, Flynn, or Manning… Cassel will be the starter week 1 next year, but maybe we grab a QB and Cassel helps coach him up.
One thing I loved seeing out of Cassel last year, was he was actively helping teach Orton and Palko, something you don’t see out of a lot of QBs… shows the type of teammate and leader he is.
Agreed, wish he was better, but I still think he is good, and good enough with a healthy JC and our improved running game to take us to the Super Bowl… as I think the AFC is vulnerable right now
GracieKal - January 28, 2012
It's not matt's confidence that bothers me
Its his read progression.
mushin - January 28, 2012 via mobile
Agreed
But some of that comes from lack of confidence
GracieKal - January 28, 2012
That's bound to happen anyway, Bean. :+)

Matty Nice remains…I only wish it translated to the field…

WorL4Chiefs - January 28, 2012

Buck'O - January 28, 2012 via iPhone app
I have always, and still defended Cassel
I support the idea of getting a new QB, as he does have his shortfalls, but the thing that pisses me off, is when so many people, both on here and “in the real world” are negative towards him on things of his game that proves they don’t understand football and they are just hating to hate.
I’m a former QB myself, and an Offensive Coordinator and QB Coach, so I feel I can evaluate the position well.
For Future references:
Things you can be critical of Cassel about:
Happy Feet in the Pocket
Locking onto his #1 Option
Not progressing through his reads
Things people are critical of Cassel that show they are uneducated, and shouldn’t be:
Arm Strength—It isn’t elite, but it is more than strong enough to make all the throws a QB needs to.
Toughness—Shouldn’t have to defend this, he puts his shoulder down and attempts to run through defenders when the situation calls for it, plays through injuries (Ribs)
Leadership—I’ve been to practices, training camp, in addition to the games, he is a very good leader and coaches up his team.
GracieKal - January 28, 2012
Very well spoken, GracieKal, concerning your 11:43 AM post!
And a “WELL DONE” to you Mr. Cassel. You’ve once again proven what a good human being you are.
Flyboy26 - January 28, 2012
It think some people
see the effect of Orton coming in behind Palko and the team responding and forget that he came in behind Palko.
Had he come in behind Cassel the change in attitudes wouldn’t have been near as dramatic. Orton was extremely effective as a leader because he came in after 4 weeks of no QB leadership whatsoever.
kcfanintx - January 29, 2012
I just don't think it's that simple
Granted, those that question his toughness and leadership are ridiculous, but the guy doesn’t have the release of Orton, and he does lack accuracy on most passes, especially the deep ball. You can say he has adequate arm strength all you want, but he is not able to consistently take the top off a defense. Why limit ourselves by accepting and dealing with his shortcomings when we can have the guy with better tools?
old_school - January 29, 2012 via mobile
Great job, Mr. Cassel!
Hey! Maybe this is the start of a new career for you…Now all we need to do is find someone who can rescue the Chiefs at quarterback.
midcalchief - January 28, 2012
For all the media hype over what a great guy Tim Tebow is:
And as horrible as Cassel is, he’s still better than Teblow.

Plus he passes better
Not that that’s saying much but still… it’s true.
kcfanintx - January 29, 2012
We found out what he's good at.
OJ In Nevada - January 28, 2012

Do we give Matty Nice next year to get us to the AFC equivelent ?…
KCChef - January 28, 2012
are we getting Jim Harbaugh?
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012

kcfanintx - January 29, 2012
Who wouldnt alert their neighbor if the house was on fire
Its not like he ran into a burning building carrying people out hes was at the right place at the right time. Pioli probably started the fire. I could see Cassel running around the house in panic similar to being in the pocket.
AsIseeIt - January 28, 2012
You'd be surprised
How many times do people drive past a car wreck. Pretend they don’t hear the neighbor beating his wife ect…
Also some people would call the FD and leave it at that. It’s great to call them but it could be too late by the time they get there… you just don’t know.
kcfanintx - January 29, 2012

Well he's going to get another chance next season.
This makes me want him to succeed even more. Not expecting it, but I truly hope he’s able to improve and be enough to get us to a super bowl. Wouldn’t want it for any other guy.

Wouldn’t want it MORE for any other guy.

Matt is an awesome guy, he’s got a lot of fire on field too, i just wish he could play better. I love him as a Person, not so much as our starting QB though…sad, i really want him to be a great QB.

Me too.
But I’m sold on the Manning to KC talk if it can happen.

I saw an article at PFT about this and found a comment
that I thought was funny as hell so I thought I would repeat it here…
“Cassel tried throwing a football at the house first but he missed, and had to walk over.”
