Tonight's open thread is brought to you by The Senior Bowl. As a conversation starter I'll toss out this question to toss around: when considering draft choices do you look mostly at game play, stats, scouting reports or a combination of all three, and why?
As always, have fun and type safely!

the eye test is always best
Masons - January 28, 2012
so, game play?
upamtn - January 28, 2012
It's always gotta be all three and then some.
do your research people.
Look at stats, mock drafts, videos, game play highlights, actual games, the combine, pro days, interviews, whatever you can find.
Exhaust all avenues before you start riding your picks name into the ground.
Know what you are talking about.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Or, just share your impressions and let others share theirs.
hmills110 - January 28, 2012
Of Course... I never know what I am talking about.
You people know that.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
finally
truth in blogging ;-)
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Never...
I don’t care how people present their ideas on players they like. I was being facetious about Ups question.
It is nice when people put together their stuff well, but other than that I’m not picky. I just love to talk Chiefs football.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
255 guys?
I agree with you though
Research!
Steve_Chiefs - January 28, 2012
I like to study players and do research, that doesn't mean eveyone has to.
If someone is a huge Alabama, they will know way more about their players then I ever will from internet research.
AP is suppose to be fun and informing and for the most part it is.
You’re stuff is great Steve.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Yup.
hmills110 - January 28, 2012
Do you like Adams better know?
Steve_Chiefs - January 28, 2012
Now
crap :)
Steve_Chiefs - January 28, 2012
i think one of the classic examples of bad scounting was jerry rice
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Well he did get picked 16th overall in 1985
but looking back he should have been number one.
He was the greatest of all time.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
the only player IMO you really have no problem saying #1 at his individual position
Masons - January 28, 2012
the chiefs passed on him
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
then again the chiefs passed on marino and took blackledge
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
It's all good the Chiefs got Ethan Horton....
It really hurts to know the Chiefs could have drafted Montana, Rice and kept Marv Levy as there coach.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
dude right on and if only joe delaney would of lived
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
the Kansas City world would be a different place.
But hey the Jets thought Al Toon was better.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
here's my whole theory on the todd blackledge draft pick
he has a great game in college for penn state his senior yr in the orange bowl againest nebraska, penn state wins the national title, Making todd blackledge a can’t miss qb prospect for the chiefs. The chiefs bit on the fact that penn state and blackledge won the national championship and that is all the chiefs needed to see.
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
the Chiefs obviously had terrible scouting in the 80's
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Agree
LadyChief - January 28, 2012
bill kenney was qb right or deberg or both
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
It is hard to pick Jerry Rice over Bruce Smith
Who do you take?
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
was carlos carson our wr then
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Rice
LadyChief - January 28, 2012
how about crazy goerge or war paint
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Smith
He makes your entire defense better.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
It is a tough call
Jerry Rice is the instant third down and has longer career.
Bruce Smith causes many three and outs.
Either way you can’t go wrong. In the long wrong Rice’s teams won more Super Bowls
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Is Cassel any better with Rice?
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
IDK
LadyChief - January 28, 2012
I do.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
He doesn't drop the catches the Bowe drops.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
But Cassel is know..........

niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012

niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Or Steve Young
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
Jerry Rice makes any quarterback look good
look what he and Tim Brown did for Rich Gannon.
Matt Cassel would unquestionably be better throwing to Jerry Rice because of the type of receiver Rice was.
He ran intermediate routes as a number one and usually got open.
Matt Cassel throws good intermediate routes and locks onto his number one until he is open.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Cassel was no Gannon.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
Gannon was no Gannon before he had Rice and Brown
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Cassel is not great
but no one can deny that Jerry Rice would make him better.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Sure he was
Just never had the opportunity.
Pro-bowl without Rice.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
Couple of them, actually..
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
Gannon had four good-great seasons his two best were with Rice and Brown…
That really doesn’t matter though, the point was that Jerry Rice makes Matt Cassel better and he would, especially if he was in his prime.
Rich Gannon should have never left the Chiefs.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
how about the gannon grbac debate
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Yup, he definitely makes Cassel a lil better.
But the point of the conversation is does Rice have more of an impact with Cassel throwing to him than Bruce Smith does for an entire defense? I just don’t think so.
I think Cassel improves to a notch above pedestrian.
But replace Dorsey with Bruce Smith…
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
the bills went to 4 straight super bowls when smith was there
it shocks me that they didn’t win one
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
It wouldn't be just to this Chiefs team
it would be Bruce Smith or Jerry Rice to any team.
Not necessarily a team with a pee wee QB.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
That's the problem
With Rice, the QB DOES matter. Just so happens that Gannon was also competent, and a good QB prior to Rice’s arrival.
Cassel’s pro-bowl nod was a facade, you ask me.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
He has two good years out of four...
Hopefully he won’t be our problem next season.
We shall see.
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
Do your research?
Mock drafting is fun, but it is not like we will affect who the Chiefs draft. Pioli isnt on AP and going to think “Damn Scaryclouds knows his shit! I’m going to trade up to draft RG3!”
Scaryclouds - January 28, 2012 via mobile
the what the heck are you doing here?
sheeeeeeesh, he listens to the rest of us …
right? ;-)
upamtn - January 28, 2012
i wish the chiefs would have a contest to be able to win a chance to sit in the war room on draft day
that would be a good pr move by the chiefs
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
exactly
Chief-blinders-on - January 28, 2012
i haven't ever heard of any team doing that it would be good for football and the fans
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Haha yeah that would be fun.
Would never happen obviously, but it’s a fun scenario.
For example, I would have nailed the Berry pick. I was hollering for him the moment he declared for the draft, and would have flipped my shit if we hadn’t taken him.
Guys like Asamoah and Moeaki though.. see those guys probably wouldn’t be on the team if it were up to me, so I’m glad the guys that really know what they’re talking about are calling the shots.

niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
tark i was there for that one the game it looks like the bucs game in tampa
I was stationed at mcdill air force base in tampa, Went to the old bucs stadium . Sam wyche was the bucs coach
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
That's awesome!
Tarkus - January 28, 2012
This brings back memories
Was brainwashed from birth to be a Chiefs fan, but this was the time I fell in love with the Chiefs on my own. Can remember watching Joe Montana playing QB for the Chiefs with my dad, and I miss those days.
Maybe Peyton can revive the 35+ year old, over the hill, coming off major injuries QB to come to the Chiefs and lead them to the playoffs? One can wish I suppose….

Horrible!

Very True.
But for the value, we could use another guy in there. That is definately a weak spot on our defense that we could potentially pick up a starter for in the later rounds. When Looking at Tyson Jackson, you have to look at the rest of the talent in that draft
When in doubt, FAIL BIG, take the biggest player you can get on the DL. They are the hardest to get.
The 2009 Draft 1st Round goes down in history as one of the worst in NFL History. The fact that we have an every down starter from that first round is a success in its own right. Is Jackson amazing for a #3 overall? No. But considering how everyone else has done from that 1st round (much wosrs than typical), he was a solid if not great pick.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Juron Criner has all 3
Juron Criner from Arizona has caught my eye as I watch a ton of college football. He passes the eye test on tape, great production, and the reports that I’ve read are good. I want him if Bowe is not re-signed to be the No. 2 after we sign Marques Colston. That would be my dream right there.
Cluster8219 - January 28, 2012
if we get Colston (insteaf of re-signing Bowe) why would we need Criner when we just got Baldwin?
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I'm a Criner fan as well. If he drops I'd love to see The Chiefs grab him, but it would have to be a pretty good drop.
……If The Chiefs get DeCastro and Sanders/Datko type deal, i’d grab him in the third.
Masons - January 28, 2012
I know this off topic, but should i buy a replica or an authentic JC jersey?
Which is best when i have to wash them? Ive heard the replicas are just printed versions, and im worried that the color will wash off?
LAChief97 - January 28, 2012
I have an Authentic Gonzalez jersey
The issue with the Authentics is that they cost 3 times as much and you pretty much have to dry clean them. They look the best, but if you are looking for something to wear regularly, I would get the Replica. They might wear out, but you could have three of them for the same price, so it is really moot on how well they wear over time.
Also, the Authenic jerseys are stiff as a board because the numbers are sewn over one another, they are really not very comfortable to wear.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012

I don't like any of those picks!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
you have to like DeCastro ... come on, man
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I just Hope it falls another way
Sure he is a great player, but that is too early for a Guard… Can he play Right Tackle?
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
wait for it...............
Masons - January 28, 2012
Yes, Wait!
Wait… Wait for What?
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
the other shoe?
upamtn - January 28, 2012
was expecting more from the Mtn man
Masons - January 28, 2012
I want a real edge blocker, not another interior lineman
We need a solid RT.
As I have said in other posts, there is no longer any such thing as an “LT” or “RT.” Defenses rush the passer from your weakest side. You need to be strong on both sides.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
QB also needs to be able to steo up into "A pocket" which a G helps create! look at Brady standing all day in the pocket, his line knows where he is and actually lets rushers come around a bit so he may step up.
Masons - January 28, 2012
sorry about all the bold...lol
Masons - January 28, 2012
This guy is getting HOT!!!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
its getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes...what?
Masons - January 28, 2012
Where is the Pole?
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
and look at the Saints ... Brees with all day to throw, and the holes opened up for their RB's ...
best OLine in the league … and that;’s what I want ours to look like
DeCastro – Hudson – Asamoah
Ecclesiastes 4:13
H/T – Masons
upamtn - January 28, 2012
now I know you're mad Ups....quoting some scripture...lol
Masons - January 28, 2012
I was quoting YOU! sheeeesh, stay with me, man!
upamtn - January 28, 2012
its getting late :p
Masons - January 28, 2012
fair enough, we all want much better RT
and an upgrade can be had in Round 2 and even Round 3 (depending on how one views BRich)
but a DeCastro only comes along every so often … he’s the OLine equivalent of Andrew Luck (how’s that?)
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Or Ryan Leaf?
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
in which case why bother with scouting, looking at games, stats ... hell, pick a name out of a hat :-)
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I just had to say it...
Obviously those guys were smoking Crack!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
ahhhhhhhh ... always someone with loads of talent who doesn't get it at the next level
this year who knows … could be a guy like Burfict, could be Tannehill or who knows who … someone will be rated VERY highly and fall on his face and everyone will be shocked
and Leaf, let’s face it … talent he had, the arm he had … but QB esp is a matter of maturity and intelligence
upamtn - January 28, 2012
we need to find the one's with a little weed problem that fall to us
houston anyone
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Decastro seems like a great pick for the 18-24 range in the 1st round.
If Pioli can orcastrate a trade like he did last year, then I am all for it. Get us another 2nd and 3rd while dropping back and I am all in!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
and if he is not there and The Chiefs miss out?
Masons - January 28, 2012
this ^^^
left holding the bag in a snipe hunt
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Left holding a better player at a greater position of need.
And maybe more picks.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
ok, but then that would be the 2rd or 3th best player AT THAT POSITION
is that what we want? the not-best players we can find?
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Depends on which board you're looking at.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
well, the BEST is Kalil, consensus
and the best interior is DeCastro, consensus (also unanimous conseensus All American, Outland Trophy, yadda yadda) why do you guys think Andrew Luck looked so good? his arm? his brain? talent?
boy, stop!
he had time because he had DeCastro! imagine Matt Cassel having time to actually figure out where his 2nd read might be … how cool would THAT be!
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I don't care if the poor a cement wall around Cassel every play
I don’t think all the time in the world will help Cassel find the #2 or 3 option…
Time to move on… Matty Nice broke my heart this year…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Agreed 100%...lol
Masons - January 28, 2012
oh, I'm with ya ... seems we may not have many (or any) options
hoping Pioli gets Orton back, but not holding my breath
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Definately wanting Orton
Cassel’s contract is written in a way that it is easy for us to drop him this offseason. Trade him for whatever you can, cut him whatever.
I am ready for Orton. He never had any offensive tallent around him in Chicago or Denver. KC is loaded and ready for a QB to come in and make something happen.
Who cares if Orton throws alot of picks, at least he will throw Way More Touchdowns to make up for it!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
and a healthy Charles and Moeaki....I for one am very excited for next year
Masons - January 28, 2012
oh yea and a shiny new OG from Stanford ; )
Masons - January 28, 2012
totally agree (other than don't want to see the INTs)
eye test alone he’s a clear cut choice over Cassel
upamtn - January 28, 2012
No one likes INT's
Except the defense, but we have enough tallent, we need someone who is a little more of a quick thinking gunslinger. With that comes a few more mistakes, but they are worth it. (Example: Drew Brees)
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
With Berry, Moeaki, and Charles comming back
It is like we have Four 1st Round picks this year!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
and they're not too wet behind the ears!!!
Masons - January 28, 2012
i think ups point is it would rezemble the great oline when roaf , shields, a young weig and waters played when green was the qb
decastro helps solidify a line like we use to have.
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
pretty much this
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I have to agree that it would be nice to have that great young core on the Ol
OH NO!!! I am starting to agree! What is going on here!?!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
think about that for a minute ...
we’d have a drop dead rock solid interior for a decade!
in just a couple of years people would be talking about OUR Oline, not the Saints
imagine, just imagine …
upamtn - January 28, 2012
In the process of Imagining
Enjoying it…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Still want to trade down and get more picks
Then take him. I understand that might not be possible…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
I understand the craving for that ...
everyone would like to have their cake and eat it too …
I prefer to just eat the damnd thing and be done with it, get it while the gettin’s good
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I am really struggling with an OG that high
It might be that I just need to get over it…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
have a cookie (angelic smile)
Skrappy, it’s all laid out for you right here: http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/1/25/2732086/no-skitzo-and-ecclesiates-4-13
we even converted Delaney!
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Hey! are you pandering my post.....?
….hey, now that your a suit, can I get royalties for it
Masons - January 28, 2012
you're supposed to pay ME
I push your goods, you make the profits and I get a small percentage
or a large percentage
upamtn - January 28, 2012
me pay you? I can't even afford the cable bill! ; )
Masons - January 28, 2012
just relax...breath in through your nose......
………out through your mouth and just relax. (snaps the rubber gloves) “this won’t hurt a bit”
Masons - January 28, 2012
Can probably still get Hightower there...
I’ll take him.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
if DeCastro is gone and they trade down then I'd have a go at somebody like Hightower or even Kuechly
Masons - January 28, 2012
Hightower? wait ... and he fills what immediate need?
upamtn - January 28, 2012
someone may need a hightower to get to a high place....ergo, position of need
Masons - January 28, 2012
with a camera?
blinds DOWN young man!
upamtn - January 28, 2012
As much as OG
We have a fill in starter there as well…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Lilja ... see, now yer talking sense
he’d be a GREAT fill in starter behind DeCastro and Asamoah (angelic smile)
upamtn - January 28, 2012
LOL!!!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Maybe I'm crazy....don't answer that....but
I don’t think The Chiefs need that much help on D. I know , I know they do need some help, but IMHO the OL is where it has to start
Masons - January 28, 2012
I like NN's FA post on NTs
that young kid from NYJ …
see, I like the younger ones, gives us more time with ’em
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Could not agree more
We need an OT.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Setting yourself up for a whole lot of disappointment, Ups.
ArrowSpread - January 28, 2012
wait ... a minute here! whaddya mean "too early for a guard"
Skrappy! the dude is Top 10 talent and could easily go before that! this is about getting the BEST guy at a position we do need … and … completing an entire GROUP (ie, interior of the OLine)
not only helps protect whoever the QB is, helps our running game … inside and outside (best pulling guard out there, hits second levels, a beast and then some) … and with our Red Zone issues that OLine interrior NEEDS to be fixed … ASAP
upamtn - January 28, 2012
there it is....my Man!!!
Masons - January 28, 2012
ominous, sanctimonious, amen
The Holy Three!
upamtn - January 28, 2012
you might have to add that to your sig!
Masons - January 28, 2012
I just think with Asamoah and Hudson in next year
And another year out of Lilja. The only spot on the OL we cannot afford to not get a quality player for is RT, and as I said before, that is essentially an LT.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
But allo the Tackles will be gone by The Chiefs pick
Masons - January 28, 2012
Maybe
If Rieff is there, we take him. If…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Rieff instead of DeCastro?
Masons - January 28, 2012
Yep.
It is actually a higher need.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
higher need right now? yes ...
… higher payout in the end? not at all sure of that
upamtn - January 28, 2012
but IMO not a BPA
Masons - January 28, 2012
In Pioli I Trust!
We shall see…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
don't trust him while your in the shower or bed room, could be a camera or bug around
Masons - January 28, 2012
pay no attention to the man (with a camera) behind the (shower) curtain ... I am OZ
upamtn - January 28, 2012
Why do you think they built him a new building?
It’s all in there!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
he better burn those tapes before they get out....just make sure Cassel is not around to save the day
Masons - January 28, 2012
or make sure u don't park in pioli parking spot
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
Is he monitoring these posts?
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
we'll find out on Draft Day ;-)
upamtn - January 28, 2012
OT is a premium position over OG
Phone booth guys are easier to find than guys who can cover the edge.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
not running phone booths!
DeCastro is THE best at blocking while pulling …
upamtn - January 28, 2012
ok, that's it ... you're leaving me no choice but to pull out the BIG guns
gonna have to pull MNchiefsfan outta the woodwork (come on, you really wanna argue with a lawyer?
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I just don't get grabbing the second or third best player at any position, when you can get the best
Masons - January 28, 2012
yeap
niageriannit1 - January 28, 2012
I am all for the best player available
I get it, and he might be it. I just think we may have some better options available at #11 or 12.
We shall see.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
fair 'nuff

Masons - January 28, 2012
Look at the tape
It doesn’t lie. You can see what the player is doing and what other players are doing around him….stats are fine and all, but they don’t tell the entire story. I’d rather have a player that had game changing performances then just racking up stats in meaningless games and situations. You can also get great stuff in interviews and just watching them in situations where they think they aren’t being watched.

Testing the android SBNation app
it’s pretty good. except that it won’t let you turn it sideways, so it’s really hard to type with my fat fingers.
wustl_chiefs_fan - January 28, 2012 via Android app
well then, keep it straight and YOU turn sideways
upamtn - January 28, 2012
it doesn't work that way.
when you turn a phone like mine sideways the buttons get bigger.

When I think if Hightower as our othe ILB next to DJ
It makes me think of how dominant the 49ers are on defense. They can do just about anything they want to on D because of the pair of ILB’s that they have.
Seems to mee the Chiefs have just about everyone else in place on Defense to be dominant except the other ILB.
I think Hightower could put us over the edge, but there are a few others that could be solid there as well. Maybe in later rounds.
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
Those 49er LBs are so fast....I don't think DJ or Hightower are even close, but I hear what you're saying
Masons - January 28, 2012
I like the idea of Antonio Allen in the 3rd
upamtn - January 28, 2012
I will check him out!
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
DJ is that fast easily
Belcher, not so much. Though I think the problem with Belcher is not physical but mental…
Skrappy - January 28, 2012
and Skrappy, one last point if I may ...
I know it’s hard to imagine taking an OG in the middle of the first round, but think back to a year ago, ok? after all … NOBODY takes a Safety with the FIFTH PICK!
so, how’d that one work out for ya? (angelic smile)
upamtn - January 28, 2012
It wasn't that out of line to take Berry
In the 2000s, I can think of five Top 10 safeties. Drafting a guard at #12 would go more against current NFL thinking than taking Berry at #5 in 2010.
BeauJackson - January 28, 2012

upamtn - January 28, 2012
adios my friend!
upamtn - January 28, 2012
That was all a decoy set up by Pioli
He knew people were listening and already knew he was taking Berry. He just played the media like a harp…
I was all for Berry at #5 and so was everyone else. Becasue of the passing nature of the league, safety’s value is going through the roof right now.

kcchiefs2782 - January 28, 2012 via Android app
a lot of less than impressive showings out there today, no?
upamtn - January 29, 2012
agree
but It’s a little taste of what they can do IMO the combines are next :)
kcchiefs2782 - January 29, 2012 via Android app
I know this was posted yesterday..
But you have to watch them play. It’s a combination of all of it, but watching the players play is the biggest thing.
I remember watching a bunch of video on DaJuan Morgan when we drafted him, and was never the slightest bit impressed. It was just a bunch of ankle tackles. Never expected him to do well and he never did.
BJ Raji, on the other hand, looked like a straight beastly monster on all the video I found of him before the draft. Just a disruptive force. And that cat has a huge shiny ring now.
