Franchise Tag Projections For Chiefs' Dwayne Bowe, Brandon Carr

We're currently working on a list of the Kansas City Chiefs free-agents-to-be but we already know who the two biggest names are -- WR Dwayne Bowe and CB Brandon Carr. Both have contracts that expire at the end of the league year which means they're scheduled to be free agents in March.

If they want to retain one or both players (and hopefully it's both), they'll have the franchise tag available. The formula to determine the franchise tag has changed so it's not known exactly what the number will be but Brian McIntyre of Football Outsiders has offered up a few projections on those amounts.

For receiver, the projection is $9.443M - $9.806M. That's roughly the cost of keeping Dwayne Bowe a Chief in 2012 via the franchise tag.

For cornerback, the projection is $10.431M - $10.832M. That's roughly the amount Carr would expected to be paid under the franchise tag.

From a strategic standpoint, it seems to make more sense to tag Bowe and try to work something out with Carr.

By the way, be sure to check out those links. A boatload of information and projections for the franchise tag.

What about Orton?

something like 20 million?

Bowe will get the franchise tag.

Carr will sign a deal if the price isn’t crazy, if not he is gone.

You can thank the Raiders for overpaying their corners

and Fitzgeralds huge contract drove the WR side up

Why shouldn't top players get top pay?
I have no problem with Fitz contract

he deserves it. I was just saying it drove up the price tag for the franchise tag. The Raiders over paying their corners is another story.

Keep Both

Simple as that

Bowe's contract

Give him a reasonable contract offer around $7 mil per year. Load it with incentives like reaching 1250 yards (he’s never done it) and 9-10 TD’s per season (only once obviously).

Bowe might have a different definition of reasonable.
Then he'd be defining Unreasonable.

That’d put him in the middle of the top 10 and that’s the right place for him.

Bowe should stop

dropping balls in the end zone then.

I'm just sayin'...

I’ve predicted all along that he wouldn’t re-sign (notwithstanding the franchise tag, of course).

Carr would get paid like Flowers with the tag.

He’s not quite worth that. I think the Brandon’s are done. Too much money to tie up in that area. They’ll draft a new one and have a camp competition.

But I think Carr might get tagged and traded.

If I have to choose between them, I’d rather pay Carr though.

One thing I know for sure

Pioli will draft a DB every year.

i think Pioli must make the Carr deal...

Our type of corners are necessary to run the style of defense Crennel brings…

If we let either of these guys walk in the last year with no salary floor

And then have to turn around and overpay for lesser talent to hit the salary floor in 2013 I will be more then upset.

Maybe the Chiefs will end all of this drama and sign both of them soon...

Though the extra draft picks for Bowe or Carr are alluring.

It would be nice to look them both up long term.

chiefs...no drama? are you crazy?
Yep, Kansas City

never a dull moment

I could see both getting signed to nice

5 year contracts that are front loaded, and I could see both holding out hoping to get paid Franchise tag money. Should be interesting.

you mean like this list of free agents to be I posted 3 weeks ago?
We’re currently working on a list of the Kansas City Chiefs free-agents-to-be
QB: Tyler Palko (restricted), Kyle Orton

RB: Thomas Jones

FB: Le’Ron McClain

WR: Dwayne Bowe, Jereme Urban

OL: Casey Wiegmann, Barry Richardson

DL: Wallace Gilberry, Kelly Gregg

LB: Jovan Belcher, LB (restricted), Cory Greenwood, LB (exclusive rights)

DB: Brandon Carr, Jon McGraw

K: Ryan Succop (restricted)

I haven’t heard of anybody getting re-signed since then.

Ryan Succop.

And you missed Brandon Siler.

what about succop?
he just recently received a new deal
nevermind.

well as i said, the list is three weeks old, but it is a good starter.

Not sure he is worth almost $3 M a year as inconsistent as he has been….

Only $4M is guaranteed.

$2M signing bonus and $2M salary in 2012.

siler already estended his contract.
succop
so it looks like we lose gilberry, just a guess

if it comes down to it, it may very well be a choice between franchise carr or franchise bowe….

id franchise brandon carr, i think hes that good, that consistent and a key to making this a top 5 defense.

but letting bowe walk is just….i mean that cant happen, so its almost a given they franchise bowe, which means we are probably losing carr the way the pats let/lost ellis hobbs

ellis hobbs last year in new england. 47 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 3 int, 11 PD. very similar to carr’s numbers this year

new england went on to trade hobbs for 2 5th rd picks at the draft instead of extending him

difference is, carr is a good corner, hobbs was opposite samuel and then had some injuries
I dont care what it takes, get Carr, Bowe, McClain, and Orton done!

We have crazy cap money to spend and we need to spend it first for guys we know that are good Chiefs! I would rather let Bowe go more than Carr if i had to pick. Bowe always seems to have good numbers and but has key drops when its clutch time. We are not going to find a better CB than Carr, get it done. FA guys I would like are C Hardwick from SD or C Meyers from Houston. I would like to see them sign NT Garay from SD. If we could swing it, I would like to slurge on G Carl Nicks. I liked him coming out of college, Its crazy we didn’t take him in the 4th round instead of Will Franklin. Now hes one of the best in the game. Hes a Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl Champ! Its crazy we replaced Waters with Lilja and we need to fix it. If we are ever to compete with the Oakland and SD fronts consistantly, we have to get bigger and stronger.

Can we not afford to sign

bowe, carr, and mcclain to long term deals (one possibly with a franchise tag)

and orton for 2 years or so???

Why not

Orton will get 9 million first year, bowe will get about 8 million, Carr will get about 10 million on first year. Flowers contract was 50 million over 5 years and front loaded.. so I don’t see a problem since Flowers, Charles, Hali, will all get less this coming year then they got the last. McClain will pull around 4 if he resigns.

And if Cassel is traded, that will start being picked up by another team..

You can always make things work.. See Philly.

corners are in demand in the pass happy league. dallas, buffalo, you could virtually suggest half of the teams in the league that would go for a decent B+ corner.

as much cap space as they have i say

get carr a 3 year deal around 25 and bowe a 5 year deal up to 40 million the thing is they have so much room under the cap there is no reason not to bring them both back they will not find a WR or CB in the draft or free agent market to mach what they will lose . Lets rember they wont pay carr more then flowers so to think he will get a bigger contract then flowers is crazy. And Bowe we are not spending much on any other player on the O side beside the QB and he hardly worth the money . then go into the draft and try to build a better line by fixing the RT spot and get some young back ups that can play the game not those it will take him a few years to get the speed of the game players. As much as i hate to say it i see a few spots wrong with the team QB ,RT maybe another gaurd but you never can tell when the QB play is so bad how bad or good the line is . Pass rush i’m not sold on houston yet or maybe its the 3-4. All in all this season came down to bad coaching and unhealthy players so we would might be in the playoff if not for these two things. We would not have got far but we would have got there. Next year i hope we have a better chance with the right fix.
