We have some actual Kansas City Chiefs coaching news.
Just not the offensive coordinator (yet).
The Chiefs announced they've hired Tom McMahon to coach special teams. McMahon comes from the St. Louis Rams where he was the special teams coordinator the last three seasons. Here's an interview from last November with the Chiefs new special teams coach.
Prior to the Chiefs, McMahon was in St. Louis and before that two years with the Atlanta Falcons. He was also on the Louisville staff as well as Utah State.
McMahon's hire also means Steve Hoffman, the previous special teams coach, is out. The Chiefs announced he has not been retained.
And in more Chiefs coaching news, two more coaches are not coming back: receivers coach Richie Anderson and assistant offensive line coach Pat Perles were not retained. It had been previously rumored that they were on their way out.

Sounds promising.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
EB should return punts
Just a thought.
SwimCoach - January 30, 2012
Why?
We had the 3rd best PR in the league without breaking any long ones and with a coach who sucked at return strategy. Berry doesn’t need more snaps.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
Not only that.
Arenas was one of the best returners in collegiate history, and he’s done a great job considering he’s had very little blocking.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
I'd rather have
Steve Breaston returning than Eric Berry
Brad-KC - January 30, 2012
That's a good thought
and Steve has said he’d like the opportunity to do it every once in awhile.
Chief Willie Wildcat - January 30, 2012
Same.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Man, remember not too long ago when we didn't have ANY good returners?
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
< cough > bobby wade < ahem >
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
Bobby "fair catch" Wade?
stagdsp - January 30, 2012
Oh come on - he was no
EDDIE DRUMMOND
(facepalm)
Ochophosphate - January 30, 2012
He was atrocious.
I remember watching him return andI kept thinking “we got ride of Dante for THIS?”
mistamic - January 30, 2012
rid*
mistamic - January 30, 2012
Vanover and Hall spoiled us
KingChief - January 30, 2012
What about McCluster?
It makes much more sense to have him as a part time return specialist than to see him continue to struggle coming out of the backfield. Keep Breaston in the slot where he can do some real damage. The McCluster experiment in the backfield should be over with Charles returning, Jones and Battle backing him up. If we’re not willing to slot him out as originally thought and make him our Wes Welker.
Mysticmariner - January 30, 2012
You'd think you'd want an offensive guy returning punts rather than a defensive guy
because he’d be more rested for it. But Arenas is so good at it that it’d be hard to replace him.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
You do remeber how the 2011 Season started don't you?
McClusterfumble.
crashman6 - January 30, 2012
Remember how it ended don't you?
We win at least 2 fewer games without Dex
MNchiefsfan - January 30, 2012
Seriously we're still saying stuff like this?
Dex was better than TJ or Battle out of the backfiled, but they should replace him? Ridiculous
Dex was our best offensive player not named Dwayne Bowe this year. Check the stats.
MNchiefsfan - January 30, 2012
Yep, I really like what I've seen from Javier
and have wished for awhile now they’d try some different blocking schemes. They weren’t able to spring one since Dex’s in the 2010 opener and I’m pretty sure it isn’t because of the lack of speed or elusiveness of our returners.
Chief Willie Wildcat - January 30, 2012
how can we all come together and convince Romeo to try out Javier at RB?
Arenas knows ho to make people miss. Draft another DB to take over a lot of his role on defense, and give him ten or twelve carries a game.
Chiefs_swagger - January 30, 2012
He did get our 1st rushing TD of the year
KingChief - January 30, 2012
and something like 20% of all of them
Chiefs_swagger - January 30, 2012
Thats what I like about Javy
He’s got the ability to plow through guys and make his own holes. Imagine how good he could be if he didn’t have to bulldoze his way through so many guys.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
It would just be fun
That’s all… I prefer he doesn’t, but it would be fun to watch, just like watching JC return kicks.
SwimCoach - January 30, 2012
He did show a lot of ability as a returner at TN,
for turnovers and on special teams.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
No.
Tomahawk29 - January 30, 2012
So Amendola is coming with him?
How are his triceps doing? Anyone?
Chiefs_swagger - January 30, 2012
Thank you baby Tebow in the manger.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
Too many penalties this year on special teams.
danmang - January 30, 2012
Welcome Tom McMahon
Chiefs_swagger - January 30, 2012
welcome, Tom!
all this news … it’s tough to assimilate everything at one time
/Borg reference
upamtn - January 30, 2012
Ironically, you really have been assimilated.....
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
Good to see.
A lot of people were saying that Hoffman is one of the better ST coaches in the league and that he should stay. However, it certainly didn’t show on game day. Way too many penalties, not enough production on returns, and of course who could forget the Seymour debacle of 2012?
EricBerryYoYouScary - January 30, 2012
Arenas was the best in the AFC in returns. Kickoffs is a whole different story with every kick essentially being a touchback.
danmang - January 30, 2012
I was talking about blocking
Arenas did a good job but it seems like he always has to break 2 tackles to even get 5 yards.
EricBerryYoYouScary - January 30, 2012
He's a master at making at least the first guy miss.
And good thing too, since the first guy is usually right in his face.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Exactly
Any time he didn’t get hit IMMEDIATELY he’d gain good yardage. Every single time.
MNchiefsfan - January 30, 2012
Hoffman's specialty is kickers and coverage
And he’s done a great job with our kickers and our coverage unit is one of the better ones in the league. But this team needs better return numbers especially on kickoffs because if Cassel is the QB then we need field position.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
With all the 3 and outs we need returns to the red zone everytime
KingChief - January 30, 2012
I was wondering if I had missed something
I was unaware they had let Hoffman go, but now that I see they’ve essentially announced it with the hiring of McMahon, then I’m all good.
I’m glad to see they went in a different direction. Hopefully now we can see some returns and a lot fewer ST’s SNAFU’s.
Chief Willie Wildcat - January 30, 2012
Yes sir!
Hard to complain about this move.
RememberDelaney37 - January 30, 2012
Special Teams
cost us the Super Bowl this year.
Brad-KC - January 30, 2012
I'd say maybe 50%.
The other half is on Haley.
Falcon58 - January 30, 2012
And another half was on Palko.
With the final half on Cassel.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
And the other 53% on Barry Richardson
The Gentry - January 30, 2012
And 67% on Sabby.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Too....many....numbers.....
….so….much….mediocrity.
mistamic - January 30, 2012
47% on Bowe for dropped "TD".
CatChief - January 30, 2012
Two blocked FGs in one game
No surprise a change was made.
CapsLockKey - January 30, 2012 via Android app
Does this signal our "move" to get Peyton Manning?
plblack - January 30, 2012
That's my interpretation.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
I assume
This is part of Pioli’s plan to steal the national media coverage from the Super Bowl and Manning and get the spot light back on KC.
plblack - January 30, 2012
our move to get Peyton Manning
a retirement cake?
Chief Willie Wildcat - January 30, 2012
I don't know, is this really a good move?
Clearly, the Hoff had to go, but according to Football Outsiders rankings, we are trading the the coach of the #22 ST for the coach of the #31 ST. Just sayin.

Keyser Sose - January 30, 2012
Hard to say
they were as banged up as we were, probably even more so this season.
Chief Willie Wildcat - January 30, 2012
At this point, yes.
A change needed to be made, and it happened. What more can we ask at this point?
Chiefs_swagger - January 30, 2012
exactly. it sure beats another year with hoffman....that guy lacked creativity despite 2 very capable returners
3 if count breaston
SDChief - January 30, 2012
If I'm reading those numbers right,
St. Louis was really hurt in the punting category, where we have an advantage just because of our punter. We also did better than they did in FG/XP, again I think because we have a better individual player. But then, they didn’t really do much different than we did in the return categories, which is where we need to improve, so /shrug.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
they didnt have one of the better punt returners in football
SDChief - January 30, 2012
Oh right, they lost Amendola, didn't they?
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
hard to go by rankings.
a lot goes on injuries, and what they have. the rams lack talent at key positions, let alone depth on special teams
SDChief - January 30, 2012
YES!!!
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Brad-KC - January 30, 2012
I think this has to be a lie.
Coaches don’t want to come to K.C.
dbakerku - January 30, 2012
He is coming from St.Louis.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
So is our new PR guy.
Is StL now part of our tree?
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Yep
The part dogs pee on.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
Ha!
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
So we can be called Missouri West
dbakerku - January 30, 2012
Chiefs play in Missouri.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
I thought they play in Kansas.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Topeka, according to Peter King.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
They do have KC on their helmets, not MC.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
MO took that land from KS fair and square.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
You can have worlds of fun
We keep arrowhead.
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
And then rubbed it in by keeping the name?
That’s just cold!
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Wouldn't it be Kansas' City then?
GenericBrand - January 30, 2012
It's ours now.
Like Tarkus said, the name is just a war trophy.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
Eastern Missouri West
Chiefs_swagger - January 30, 2012
st louis and chicago have jumped into the fray
SDChief - January 30, 2012
Gnus!
I was kinda hoping they’d find a way to keep Hoffman as a kicking coach. But I guess he’s too respected and young in his career to take a demotion and stay with the same team. He’ll probably find a job somewhere pretty fast.
I am encouraged by the changes in the offensive assistant positions, might mean that an as-yet-unannounced OC is already giving his input on assistant coaches.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
General:"Where are you from,son?"
Private:“Neeeeever heard of it”
Kind of reminds me of the hires.Bonus points if you can name the movie.
Hint:…not 22 guys off the street…. 12 guys from the hoos-gow.

friggin mobile comment

I know.
But only because I cheated.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Gratuitous personal story: I ran the obstacle course they used in "Stripes."
The balance log had a divot.

KCbo - January 30, 2012
I felt like
this joke was going places…until your phone butchered it. Oh well, get em next time.
Brad-KC - January 30, 2012
Letting offensive coaches walk
could indicate they know who they want as the OC and will let him pick his assistants.
Chiefs4Life - January 30, 2012
* and will let Peyton pick his assistants.
Brad-KC - January 30, 2012
agree, no OC comes in an takes on the entire staff...maybe a serious oL coach like muir with experience, or keeping carthon, beyond that type of stuff, we may see some new staff members
this is where the oc gets to repay debts to those who got him where he is
SDChief - January 30, 2012
I'd like to keep Muir as O line coach.
I’d rather keep Zorn as QB coach than Mo as designated yeller.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
mo serves his purpose. i dont understand why people dont want these guys yelled at. someone has to
SDChief - January 30, 2012
I know I sure do.
Though I’m not sure they hear me.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
yep
SDChief - January 30, 2012
I think he does it wrong.
He should yell in a motivational way. From what I’ve heard at training camp, he mostly yells in an asshole way. Just my opinion, and of course I only know what goes on in public. But I have yelled and been yelled at a lot, so have a little expertise in the various species of yelling.
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
Muir is staying as OL coach
stagdsp - January 30, 2012
didnt say he wasnt
SDChief - January 30, 2012
How do you know?
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
Until told otherwise
Which means, until the OC gets here and makes a decision.
cheapham - January 30, 2012
Yep.
Might stay, might not.
Tarkus - January 30, 2012
I like it
keep it going Romeo
Steve_in_RI - January 30, 2012
Obligatory statement referencing negative media reports as of late.

cheapham - January 30, 2012
Hmmmm
Cassel, Palko, phone tap, ageism, candy wrapper…that is all
Chiefs fan in ST Louis - January 30, 2012 via mobile
Not sure if there was anyone better available
But a change needed to be made. The lack of blocking was a repeated problem throughout the year, and came to a fulcrum against Oakland in a bad way. We have three rock-solid specialists, and now the scheming and training for the rest of the ST unit needs to get whipped into shape.
cheapham - January 30, 2012
i dont know much about him, but hes instantly an upgrade over hoffman one would hope.
stoked for a new direction with special teams
hope his first task is to convince pioli to pay colquitt the highest of any punter not named lechler
SDChief - January 30, 2012
nice to hear bernie parmalee keeps his job
SDChief - January 30, 2012
Wasn't Weis supposed to hire him?
Brsrkr - January 30, 2012
Not bad
Most important part of this was the firing of who we HAD. Showed recognition of a big problem.
Now make sure Arenas gets some blocking!!!!
MNchiefsfan - January 30, 2012
Needed a change...
WAY too many penalties on punt returns….
