Good morning and welcome to Arrowheadlines! We have today's Kansas City Chiefs news from across the internet. Enjoy!
Since the NFL merger in 1970, 61 assistant coaches have been promoted to head coach and only five - 8 percent - led their teams to Super Bowl victories.
Those five former assistants were the Baltimore Colts' Don McCafferty (1970), the Raiders' John Madden (1976) and Tom Flores (1980, '83), the Giants' Bill Parcells (1986, '90) and the 49ers' George Seifert (1989, '94).
Certainly, it's difficult winning a Super Bowl under any circumstances, but of those 61 promoted assistants, only 11 - 18 percent - managed winning records with the programs they inherited.
Hiring An NFL Coach Can Be A Perverse Exercise from KC Star
Fan voting is currently underway on the Chiefs Facebook page for the top offensive play of the 2011 season. This year, fan voting will determine the order of 65TPT's Top-10 of 2011 lists.

Symbolic of the ever-changing NFL climate, 50-gallon trash bags lined the Chiefs locker room as players prepared to exit for the offseason.
Some players cleaned out their lockers completely; fully aware it might be the last time they step foot inside the team's training facility. Others only removed immediate necessities.
Hugs were had, handshakes received and contact information exchanged. A group of players would gather for a final game pickup basketball at a local health club Monday evening before heading separate directions for the next few months or longer.
Players For Leave For Offseason With Eye On Head Coaching Direction from The Mothership
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the club has signed six players: FB
Shane Bannon, OL Rob Bruggeman, LB Caleb Campbell, WR Jamar Newsome, DL Luke Patterson and DTAnthony Toribio. Kansas City Signs Six Players from The Mothership
Typically it has been Jackie Battle getting the most carries, with Thomas Jones (-0.7) and Dexter McCluster (+2.6) getting a fair amount. With Battle on injured reserve for the last game, McCluster had more carries than usual and he made the most of them. Late in the first quarter, the Chiefs had 90 yards to go for a touchdown, and McCluster accounted for 54 of them on four carries. The first two runs came on third downs, and he gave the team a new set of downs both times. The last two were longer runs, where on the first he followed his blockers for 16 yards. On the second, however, he decided to cut back since he saw open field, and then was simply able to outrun everyone else for the game's only touchdown. On the game he had 12 carries which was a season high for him.
Re-Focused: Chiefs @ Broncos from Pro Football Focus
The remaining question is with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, it would be a major upset if interim coach Romeo Crennel isn't kept. The Chiefs went 2-1, including a win over the 15-1 Green Bay Packers, in the three games Crennel was the coach after Todd Haley was fired. The Chiefs' brass likes Crennel and he is revered by Kansas City's players. It would be a shock if he isn't given the permanent job soon.
Unexpected Stability In The AFC West from ESPN
The home schedule is notable as fans will be able to see former Chief, Tony Gonzalez, come back to town in what could be his final season. Gonzalez signed a one-year contract on Monday for a reported $7 million, according to the team's official web site.
While Gonzalez is finishing up a Hall of Fame career, Chiefs fans will get to see a player that some think is just embarking on what could turn into a Hall of Fame career, Panthers quarterback, Cam Newton.
KC Chiefs 2012 Opponents Announced By NFL; Gonzo Returning To KC With Falcons from Examiner.com
Let's establish something right away.
The Chiefs will not become one of the NFL's elite teams unless they upgrade significantly at quarterback...
...Surely if all those injured players return, and the offensive line can be made a little stronger, that's good enough - isn't it?
No.
Cassel had the benefit of a powerhouse running game led by Jamaal Charles, he had a healthy Tony Moeaki at tight end - and STILL the Chiefs managed just a single TD in each of their last two games that year.Candid Cameron: Chiefs Need QB Upgrade from FOX Sports Kansas City
Cassel was back throwing passes by the end of the year, though his place on injured reserve meant he wouldn't have been able to help down the stretch. And the trio of torn ACLs has recovered nicely, which means Moeaki, Berry and Charles should be ready by the start of April minicamps.
"They're all making good progress, they're all rehabbing," said interim coach Romeo Crennel, who is expected to learn soon whether he'll get the permanent job. "I've been told they're on schedule as far as their rehab goes. Whether that's football-ready or not, I can't say that right now."
After Season Marked By Devastating Injuries, Chiefs Hope To Be Back At Full Strength By April from The Associated Press via The Washington Post
11. Kansas City Chiefs*: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama: The Chiefs lost Jamaal Charles in the second week of the 2011 NFL season, and the offense never rebounded. Charles should be back and healthy next season, but Richardson is the rare running back talent who can completely change an offense. The way this mock draft has unfolded, he'll be slipping out of the Top 10 - something few scouts or experts expect. A different type of back from Charles, the two could work together to form a dynamic duo in the Kansas City backfield.
Post-Regular Season Mock Draft from FOX Sports
Best fit, team/coaches: Burfict would be an excellent fit for the Kansas City Chiefs as a violent interior force in their 3-4. Not only would he fit in the Chiefs' scheme scheme, but Romeo Crennel could help Burfict overcome issues controlling his emotions - if Crennel remains as head coach.
Projected draft position: Burfict has been rumored to be a late first-round pick. While that is possible, we believe hes most likely will be a second- or third-round pick by a team that has a history of handling players who come into the NFL with baggage.
Vontaze Burfict's Intensity Intriguing, But Rage A Red Flag from SportingNews
Patriots Pro Bowl left guard Brian Waters is returning to the playoffs this season in his first season with the Patriots. He was on a 13-3 Chiefs team in 2003 that lost in the AFC Divisional round to the Colts, 38-31. So he knows the heartbreak of one-and-done at home.
He also knows what an intimidating factor noise can be as he played 11 seasons in Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium.
"Good question," Waters responded before a very long pause and some laughter, presumably to himself. "It's a tough question. You're right, I have played in some loud places, and this place can be loud - at times."
Could the Patriots' home venue be louder and more intimidating?
"You said that. I didn't say that," Waters smiled, quick to cover his rear.
Brian Waters: Gillette Stadium 'Can Be Loud - At Times' from It Is What It Is
KANSAS CITY -- This one is easy, once the Chiefs decide whether to keep Romeo Crennel as coach (they should). Getting back running back Jamaal Charles, safety Eric Berry, quarterback Matt Cassel and tight end Tony Moeaki will be a huge boost. The secondary could be among the league's best with Berry.
How To Fix 20 Teams For 2012 from The Las Vegas Review-Journal
TODD HALEY, Kansas City: Oftentimes when coaches are fired, players feel awful about it and try to convince the media that the underperformance was not the coach's fault. The Chiefs responded by going out and beating the undefeated Packers. So yeah...pretty sure Todd Haley's players weren't all that fond of him. The only thing missing after the Packers game was the Chiefs' entire team kneeling before Romeo Crennell and chanting, "Hail to Romeo! The wicked Todd is dead!" and Kyle Orton handing Crennell Haley's broomstick.

package
Bowe and dorsey to cleveland for there 2 first rounders draft rg3 at 5 and the next 2 work on offensive line and ilb or a wideout. Pick up a wr or rb in free agency resign carr. Use second round pick on tight end and 3rd on running back.
Or same package to cleveland draft wide out at 5 offensive line at 11 and running back with the last. 2nd on tight end 3rd onon keenum or wheedon at qb free agency offensive line and inside linebacker and Orton or flynn at qb thoughts?

Mike Holmgren says
“You’re good but you’re no Thomas Demitroff”
trentchiefsfan - January 4, 2012
hell
Cleveland would take that get help on defense and immediate upgrade at wideout for them.. Pioli needs to get aggressive this is his last chance as far as im concerned trading jared allen ended up being good trading bowe would easily provide us everything we need plus depth

Punctuation is optional before 9am
But seriously, you’re giving up two first round picks (one who was in the Pro Bowl last year) for 2 first round picks?
HIV 2 Elway - January 4, 2012
throw in a 3rd or 4th rounder if u can get it
I was considering doing that but we don’t really need dorsey we got tjack same type of de. I mean if we can get something like that for bowe and dorsey you take it upgrades alot of positions ala jared allen trade and get another de later or in free agency
rickrock58 - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Uh yeah the system calls for 2 of the same DEs
2 gap pluggers
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
amon gordon can do that
Powe and a free agent dt can handle that part gordon and tjack on the ends. Gordon better push than dorsey, bring in another de later in the draft. But the point is the trade gives us alot of options to upgrade where we are weak and still stay strong in other departments
rickrock58 - January 4, 2012 via mobile
heh, heh
He said “package”.

Why wouldn't we
consider trading for Sam Bradford? Give St. Louis our 1st and 3rd this year and maybe a 2nd next year? St. Louis could go ahead and draft RG3 and get a couple extra draft picks for their new head coach and we’d have our qb set for the next 7 years!
DC_KCfan - January 4, 2012
wth
give them our 1and3 and a 2nd next year? lol. wow thats the craziest thing i ever heard! have u seen bradfords contract and he stays injured doesnt he or maybe just this year but not even close to anything i would give for him. the most i would give for him is a 2nd or 3rd because of that big contract and he was injured this year.
kcchiefsfan515 - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Throw in Palco.
Mr.Pibbs - January 4, 2012
You've seen Bradford, right?
Over the past two years, Cassel > Bradford.
Cassel vs. Sam Bradford (2010-2011)*:
Games Started: 24 vs. 23
Comp: 422 vs. 496
Att: 719 vs. 847
Pct: 58.6% vs. 58.6%
Yds: 4,829 vs. 5,099
Avg: 6.7 vs. 6.0
TD: 37 vs. 22
INT: 16 vs. 19
Rate: 86.9 vs. 75.3
Cassel is Bradford’s equal in completion percentage, and bests him in Yards per Attempt, TDs, INTs (and, correspondingly, his TD-to-INT ratio) and QB Rating.
(* – That was posted back in November. I’m too lazy/don’t care enough to update it.)
JacinB - January 4, 2012
Yayyyy stats tell the whole story!
Watch Bradford last year, and look at the talent around him. Much better QB, if he stays healthy.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
Bradford
had ZERO talent around him. Cassel had great talent around him last year and even more this year and was still barely mediocre. Cassel has peaked. And if Bradford is equal to cassel in his first or second year, that’s not too shabby, he’ll get better.
DC_KCfan - January 4, 2012
I agree that it seems clear to me that the players not at all upset about Haley getting fired.
I said it then that it was interesting how the dolphins players said things like, we let coach Sporano down, and all you heard out of the Chiefs was that Romeo will do a great job.
I think Haley lost the locker room, and if Pioli knew that earlier he should have fired him.
saskwatch - January 4, 2012
forget it..
we just have to admit cassel willbe our qb next year and move on. pioli dosent have the balls to get rid of cassel and i swear he has a man crush on him. so fill all our other holes.
wolfpack0735 - January 4, 2012
Commitment to Mediocrity...
Commitment to Failure…whatever u wanna call if, but that’s what we are doing If Cassel QBs next year. The writer has a point in saying that our last 2 games last year sucked even with everyone around.

Only schmucks take RBs in the top 20 picks
HIV 2 Elway - January 4, 2012
Then you can count me as a "schmuck"...
Because I’d love to have Trent Richardson as a Chief.

HIV 2 Elway - January 4, 2012
Drafting college players is all about taking chances
There are very few sure things.
I’m not saying we should take TR…but I wouldn’t be pissed if we did. I don’t think he’ll be there when we pick, anyway.
Scott B. - January 4, 2012
Take a chance on our greatest need. Quarterback
Mr.Pibbs - January 4, 2012
Top 10 scoring plays
This should be easy. I think we only scored ten times all season
SC Chief - January 4, 2012 via Android app
Maybe not
The hard part is going to be breaking down which two field goals make #9 and #10.misterbrain - January 4, 2012
As much as I want DeCastro
Richardson is an absolute beast & pairing him with Charles would probably result in two 1200 yard rushers. If we have to pick at #11 or #12 (meaning no good trade offers come in) he is probably the best value pick.
jmcgoblue - January 4, 2012
So a back up RB.. with the 11th or 12th overall pick...
Consider me NOT wanting part of that
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
c'mon
you know JC is splitting carries 50/50 with SOMEONE, so he wouldn’t be a backup.
But as I said below, I think Cincy could end up being a great trade partner netting us the #17 & a 2nd rounder. I’d definitely prefer a trade down if it’s there.
jmcgoblue - January 4, 2012
He would be a part time back
I would FLIP if we took a RB in the first for a PART time role
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
Why?
Most of the really good running games these days have at least a premier back and a very good backup splitting time about 60/40. This would let us give TR a chance to come into his own by the time JC is declining (which unfortunately will happen at some point). Then those two can split time the other way for a while before we start the cycle over again with TR and a new back.
I’m all for picking a greater need in the first round, but if he is still there, it wouldn’t be a bad pick, especially if some of our other needs are addressed in FA.
misterbrain - January 4, 2012
RBs are a dime a dozen, fix the Oline and you can plug and play a RB that fits the system
Like Denver used to do, or like Foster with the Texans. Both were/are ZBS schemes, gimme mid/late round/udfa pick ups and be good.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
I'm sorry but if we aren't going to do everything possible to work up a trade
to get a QB in this years draft, I am going to be incredibly upset with the Chiefs brass for not truly doing everything they can to get this franchise a Super Bowl. Cassel and Orton aren’t going to do it.
5280ChiefsFan - January 4, 2012
Why take an over rated Richardson in the 1st when you can have a does everything back in LaMichael James in the 3rd?
Becuase Richardson plays in the feild goal happy ess eee see?

James looks a lot like McCluster
I’d like a back who can break a tackle instead.
jmcgoblue - January 4, 2012
I take it you don't watch a lot of Oregon football....
because LMJ breaks fools off week in and week out. James looks like a rich mans JC
HIV 2 Elway - January 4, 2012
na, just the youtube highlights
Hey, if he’s another MJD I’m all for it…
Actually I think Cincy may be very interested in Richardson. Perhaps we can trade the pick to them for #17 & #54…then still snag DeCastro (and Burfict in the 2nd round).
jmcgoblue - January 4, 2012
that's because they don't allow defense in the PAC-10
it’s what made Andrew Luck a household name :-)

no, wait … Green had Holmes

IMO
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
I don't want to take richardson or any other RB in the first...but he is a bad ass...
If we go RB, I’d prefer someone like Lamar Miller in the 2nd…unless we don’t resign Carr, then we should go Jenoris Jenkins in the 2nd…
SFLChief - January 4, 2012
Pass on Richardson
I’d rather take a RB in the later rounds. Some good backs will still be there in the 3rd and 4th round
KingChief - January 4, 2012
We have to have a quarterback who can
put up some points with our offense. However that is done, it has to happen before the Chiefs can expect to move into the playoffs and WIN. It is no longer just good enough to make it to the playoffs for one more week of football. We have to reach the playoffs with an offense that can play with the big boys.
G.L. - January 4, 2012
I would take Richardson
Let’s face it , only way we get to the playoffs when Charles AND jones had a big year. Cassel WILL almost guaranteed be our QB . So since jones is done . We should have a back to compliment Charles . Sure we could go online in the first but they won’t help us score points with cassel under center . We could also find oline in later rounds or free agency . I would rather take a QB tho …
chiefsman! - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Yeah let's leave the Oline is the bad shape its in.. and take a RB who will be hit behind the LOS when they get the ball
Nor will the QB be able to throw, teams will stack the box blitzing the run and the pass.. great plan
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
Qb can't throw anyways
And we really only need to replace richardson . There is some good name lineman in free agency we can take this year . Plus why would it be so hard to take a lineman in the 2nd or 3rd. I mean I’m not big on taking a RB but beyond Charles we have nothing really. So many missed 3 and 1s or 4th and1 for that matter . Not to mention we can do sheet in the redzone . Maybe a lineman would fix that . But I doubt it
chiefsman! - January 4, 2012 via mobile
Fixing the Oline will help EVERYTHING
If it’s Orton, Cassel, Stanzi, Hell Favre back there. We have to give them time to throw, Cassel more than others with his slow reads.
We can’t get those short gains due to the Oline in the middle getting overpowered. We have Hudson, we don’t know how he will pan out at C. We need a LG and RT.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
Right one can be addressed in free agency
And other in the draft. Not saying i would love the move
. I wouldn’t . But I wouldn’t hate it either . Of course it would be smarter to go oline in first and maybe burflict second . I don’t even know lol we need help in quite a few places. :/
chiefsman! - January 4, 2012 via mobile
There really is not a good group of FA OTs right now
They often do not hit the market, Grubbs/Nicks may get re-signed we don’t know..
BAMFSpecialOps - January 4, 2012
True
Idk If I see pioli going for 2 lineman in the draft . He may need to . But there are many other positions that need to be addressed also
chiefsman! - January 4, 2012 via mobile
PFF on Dorsey
Maybe Dorsey has finally found his groove in the 3-4? Should we all rethink our desire to cut and run from him? This seems to be a pretty important development, one that could very easily change off season plans for this team.
cheapham - January 4, 2012
Dorsey isn't going anywhere
If you want to know where the problem is on the strong side you need look no further than Belcher.

RB in 1st Round?
I argued that we should have taken Roy Helu in the 3-4 rd last year and got blasted (by the way – I still wish we would have done that)….but I am not sure spending a 1st is wise as much as I would like to see a double headed monster, I think you can get a Helu in the middle rounds
