One of the constants while tracking the Kansas City Chiefs coaching rumor mill has been Josh McDaniels. Whether he was coming here to be a head coach (he's not) or in an offensive coordinator role, a lot of the rumor mill stuff has involved McDaniels coming to KC.
Lately, though, it seems the Josh McDaniels-to-KC talk has dried up, even as the offensive coordinator.
"I don't think Josh McDaniels is going to be an offensive coordinator in Kansas City," NFL Network's Michael Lombardi said on Wednesday. "I think there will be some other opportunities down the road, probably shortly, for Josh McDaniels. No longer in St. Louis with the Rams being fired so I don't think Kansas City's in the cards."
McDaniels, as far as I know, hasn't technically been fired but the Rams recognized he could end up leaving.
While Lombardi reports that McDaniels-to-KC is no longer expected to happen, he does still predict that Romeo Crennel will end up being the full-time head coach. Despite a couple of the Chiefs coaching candidates getting out there, it seems like most everyone still believes Crennel will get that job.

Ok then
Time to start looking into every coach that has ever worked under Pioli for our new OC…
Oh wont that be funKSU-Chief - January 5, 2012
Give the job to Crennel.
We need to make a decision and get out OC and DC in place.

Polarizing figure
McD doesn’t have the best reputation but with a past working ties with Pioli and Crennel I wouldn’t be surprised if the talk about OC heats up again down the road if he is officially out of a job in STL. I also think that if brought on as OC, expectations would have to be made up front about how far his reach of power would be. And while I dislike McD I can’t say that if he became OC that I wouldn’t at least be interested to see what he could do with this team…as long as Brandon Lloyd doesn’t follow suit – I like Lloyd but again, cronyism is a part of the NFL and additions are sometimes made based on affiliation…I’d rather stick with what we’ve got though. My overall opinion, however, I hope the Josh McD talk dries completely!
JMagsKC1 - January 5, 2012
McHoodie has totally misused and ruined the Rams offense
upamtn - January 5, 2012
It kinda looked like Mike Martz offense
Get the QB killed and not using the RB at the right time, like down on the goalline.
KingChief - January 5, 2012
Agreed!
It didn’t look like an offense managed by a “guru.” Though with what he was able to do with Cassel and Orton respectively, I can’t say I wouldn’t be interested to see what he’s got for us if we were forced to watch McHoodie step in as OC. Though as I mentioned and I believe most would agree, I would feel better once the Josh McD talk comes to a complete halt.
JMagsKC1 - January 5, 2012
I'll rest easier when the McDaniels-to-Chiefs talk is completely dead and burried!
Until then stupid stuff can still happen.
BCRavenJHawkfan - January 5, 2012
I'm probably more worried about McDaniels coming here now....
It has seemed with Pioli when things got the quietest it usually indicated that something was about to happen. I’m not resting yet. I don’t want McDaniels here. His stench of failure with the donkeys and the rumors of his cheating are still too fresh for my taste.

Interviews / The Todd Haley Effect
I think interviewing other candidates is just a negotiating tactic with RAC. Bring in a few good candidates and negotiate a better deal for the club.
Todd Haley’s finger wagging surely killed any chance of McDaniels joining the Chiefs. It and a hundred other stupid, immature actions also probably killed Haley’s shot to be a head coach (maybe even OC) again in this league.
Chief Farmer - January 5, 2012
Totally agree Farmer.
Mr.Pibbs - January 5, 2012
Id like to see the OC from GB
hired as HC( i dont think he will make a lateral move) and bring Matt Flynn with him to run his offense…..Romeo retain his DC job
KCinAZ - January 5, 2012
Philbin? wouldn't be against bringing him in as OC but still prefer Crennel as HC by far
and Flynn … meh, one game (or even one season) does not a great QB make (see: Cassel, Matt)
upamtn - January 5, 2012
Everytime i have seen Flynn he has impressed me...
And Philbin not only knows offense, he also used to coach O Line…and will likely be coming off winning back to back Super Bowls….We have seen Crennels results as a Head Coach…Romeo is very laid back. I think if things start going south, players will lose respect for him and start walking on him…the interaction i have seen between him and the players is more “buddy buddy” than “coach player”……just my opinion..
KCinAZ - January 5, 2012
Not that hard to do playing on the Packers, and playing bad defenses.
And we haven’t seen Crennel’s results as a HC yet, at least not for the Chiefs. As an Interim he’s 2-1, and that’s pretty damn good when the loss was by a FG.
ChiefWarPaint - January 5, 2012
Matt Flynn
Matt Flynn had an awesome game against New England when Rogers went down last season with a concusion.
paxchief - January 5, 2012
Say what?
He doesn’t even call the plays in GB and you want him to be our HC.
joplin chiefs fan - January 5, 2012
I dont know how much he actually did in GB
That is the biggest issue I would have with him being the HC. Most OC under a HC that is offensive minded and calls plays dont get to do anything but breakdown the D and form a gamplan.
KSU-Chief - January 5, 2012
Philbin = Haley
Benefited from a great head coach and dynamic offense.
Haley had Whisenhunt, Warner, Fitz, Boldin etc
Philbin had McCarthy, Rodgers, Jennings, Nelson, Findley etc.
Seems like the exact same hire to me.
craig in calgary - January 5, 2012
Except the people themselves couldn't be more different
ChiefWarPaint - January 5, 2012
Very true
The situational parallels are striking…the personality parallels seem almost non-existent.
cheapham - January 5, 2012
See, I didn't have a problem per se with Haley and his demeanor.
I kind of liked raging lunatic Todd.
My problem was consistantly getting blown out at home by teams like the Bills and the Dolphins. How can we lose to the Dolphins in a wildly uncompetitive game and then 2 weeks later beat “the greatest team of all time” quite soundly? It had to be preparation.
craig in calgary - January 5, 2012
Yep, too often Haley's teams did not show up.
The number of blowout losses under him was staggering.
Tarkus - January 5, 2012
Philbin comes up with the gameplan for the Pack
I’m sure he’d keep our guys prepared.
Haley’s demeanor was just inconsistent, and this year especially he just didn’t look the same on the sideline.
ChiefWarPaint - January 5, 2012
That could have something to do with his demeanor though
A guy who is freaking out could theoretically make his team more “tight” and lose their edge when they fall behind.
However, I agree that it’s tough to take the dude seriously as a great OC when he’s got Rodgers throwing the ball.
MNchiefsfan - January 5, 2012
He's been there longer than that - before McCarthy
Philbin has been with GB for 8 years, he came on in ‘03 as asst. OL coach, then moved to TE/OL coach. When McCarthy came in he was moved to OC and has been there for 5 years (’06-’11). For 19 years prior to that he coached in the college ranks.
No doubt he has benefited from solid players to work with, but we’ve seen teams with “quality players” not perform well almost as much as we’ve seen the opposite.
I would love Philbin to come as OC, but probably not as HC. I don’t know if that move is good for him or not though. McCarthy isn’t going anywhere anytime soon in GB so he’s going to have to look outside for opportunities. Could he be brought in with the idea that he could replace Crennel when he retires? Tough to say – but I do think Philbin is a quality guy.
Ochophosphate - January 5, 2012
for now....
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
I love how things supposedly change so much overnight.
I “don’t think” he’s any more or less of a candidate than he was yesterday. Notice how the word “think” is in every one of Lombardi’s sentences. He’s speculating, nothing more. C’mon, Joel, you don’t see that?
Tarkus - January 5, 2012
how dare you!
Lombradi’s words are the words of god!
He shall smite you
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
Oh, I believe him
that that is his opinion.
Tarkus - January 5, 2012
How dare you call Lombardi a God
What did he say the Kansas City Chiefs don’t measure up to a NFL team?
Before the AFL the NFL sucked. Lombardi could not coach today unlike Hank Stram who was creative on his play calling and were using some of his plays today. If you want to call somebody a God you should be talking about Hank Stram. Not a Coach who had no respect for the Chiefs.
rdlvegas85 - January 5, 2012
Wrong Lombardi, vegas.
They are related, but that’s still the wrong Lombardi you speak of. This guy is an ex-GM turned commentator (former owner of National Football Post)…also the crappy personnel guy who Belichick had nothing to do with after they were both fired in Cleveland.
go_saleaumua - January 5, 2012
Pretty much have to decide on a HC before finding an OC, right?
Unless McDaniels just has no interest in working in KC for some reason, and Lombardi knows this, it just sounds like random speculation from him.
jmcgoblue - January 5, 2012
i feel sorry for RAC
he took a shitty team and made a great defense.
if that’s not enough to make him HC, nothing will
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
I think he'll get the job in the end
But you can’t blame Pioli & Hunt for doing their Due Diligence on other potential candidates. Besides, what if RAC says that he plans on retiring in two years…do you really want to hire him then start all over again in 24 months?
jmcgoblue - January 5, 2012
They still have to go through interviews regardless
They can’t just appoint Crennel HC without looking at other candidates – especially minority candidates. Remember that Crennel doesn’t count as the “rooney rule” candidate because he’s internal.
Can’t fault them for performing due diligence. RAC is a veteran coach, I think he’s been around the league long enough to not let something like this ruffle his feathers.
If I were a candidate, I would rather the team take a look at everyone and decide that I was the best fit rather than just hand it to me because I felt like I deserved it. If he’s chosen, it means they felt he was the best man for the job and a better option than anyone else.
Ochophosphate - January 5, 2012
Crennels defense
Was ok last year. We controlled the clock because of the running game last year and kept the defense off the field. The second half of this year they came together. Look how we played the Steelers, Pats and the Packers, we were pretty solid.
Crennel has come up with a good game plan to win on defense. Were close to being a top 5 defense. Were a lot closer than people think on offense to having a dangerous offense.
Lets see what Crennel can do as a HC.
rdlvegas85 - January 5, 2012
Good.
RAC as hc. Someone else awesome for OC.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012
That is what I'm thinking too
Romeo obviously has the locker room, get a new set of coordinators in place and do it quick.
JaySoy - January 5, 2012
just wondering...
What’s so great about mcDanials? From what I’ve seen, he’s not that special
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
Well, both our QBs played very well under him.
Tarkus - January 5, 2012
My only reservation to McD has OC is his rep as a jackass
FrankPitts - January 5, 2012
Philbin = Haley
And Flynn= Cassel. Do we really want to do that again? I don’t want a QB caretaker. I want a legit QB that could look good in any system. I’m tired of retread QBs. Draft a legit prospect and delevop him.
Brandt34 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Philbin ≠ Haley
It’s already in progress – however, how long the development may take is a different thing altogether

58 was my friend - January 5, 2012
QB are only as good as their surrounding
If we had Brady or Manning and we had the play calling we had for most of the year, they would not be successful because of the O line.
If you look at Rodgers, Brees, Manning, and Brady they all have creative play calling on offense. If you want to be an elite offense you have to have creative play calling. Manning’s O line sucks, he does a no huddle offense a lot. When we did a no huddle, fast temp offense we were pretty good on offense.
We couldn’t run the ball this year unless the pass opened up the run. I hear TJ is to slow,
Dexter is not slow, He had a lot of no gain this year. We need to work on the O line and have a creative OC. I’m not worried about Cassel or Orton.
rdlvegas85 - January 5, 2012
What's to say the next OC isn't already on staff?
Does anybody here think Zorn may get the OC job? He’s done a respectable job as a QB coach and he held the OC position for the Skins for all of what, two months?
