On Wednesday news came down via ESPN that the Kansas City Chiefs were interviewing Joe Philbin, the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator, for the head coaching position. Philbin was the only known candidate for the Chiefs job at the time, outside of Romeo Crennel.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was asked about the report on Philbin and said:
"I think we have a great staff. A number of excellent assistants. I think the world of Joe Philbin. The job he's done here speaks for itself. But as far as other opportunities that are going on in the NFL or college football, it's not really my place to talk about it. But, again, we have an outstanding coaching staff and I'm very proud of that."
As for Philbin's chances of ending up in Kansas City...that we don't know.
I did find it interesting, though, to hear ESPN's Adam Schefter say on Ross Tucker's podcast, "I think Joe Philbin is going to be Scott Pioli's kind of guy, to be honest with you. Humble, quiet, hard-working guy who's from Massachusetts. I could see Scott Pioli falling for Joe Philbin." Schefter's just speculating here, obviously, but interesting nonetheless. He said he didn't know who the favorite was, if there even was one.
So we go back to waiting on news of the Chiefs next head coach.

If Philbin does get the nod
Maybe he is impressed that RAC beat his offense, and keeps RAC here in KC.
dbaty7 - January 5, 2012
RAC might get one of the other open spots
with the job he did in his 3 game sneak preview
ArrowheadHunter - January 5, 2012
Dolphins run a 3-4 ...
rather have Crennel here than there, wouldn’t blame him one bit for taking HC job elsewhere if he’s passed over here … would be a shame to lose the guy
dunno, just not seeing Philbin as HC … esp after “reaching” for Haley (never having been HC before he came to KC) would Pioli do the same thing all over again? (which isn’t to say that Philbin isn’t or might not be good)
call it “comfort level” call it “continuity” call it a “hunch” but my personal choice would be Crennel (not that it’s my choice to make)
upamtn - January 5, 2012
I hear ya
But no HC can be a HC before someone gives them the opportunity of being a HC. Chicken and egg thing right? Some succeed very well on their first gig (Tomlin, Payton). Some don’t.
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
this is true
and some succeed the second time around instead of the first, as you well know (angelic smile)
upamtn - January 5, 2012
as in life, my friend, as in life.
Although that sounds rather like reincarnation when really all I mean is some succeed the second time around trying something, marriage, jobs, riding a bike.
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
if at first you don't succeed ...
… skydiving may not be for you

I was looking for the scene in a French film by Truffant, where
Gregory goes boom… but couldn’t find it, so I’ll make the innocuous reference instead and leave it at that.
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
I also hesitate to take a guy
Who gets to ride on the back of a QB that is playing better than almost anyone ever has.
MNchiefsfan - January 5, 2012
similar to say...
McDouche?
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
and potentially even Haley
coordinators who get to call plays for great QBs have an advantage.
MNchiefsfan - January 5, 2012
It comes down to that question that I have been mulling over lots lately
And not meant as a chicken or egg, but:
Do the great coordinators make the QB’s or the other way around? I feel although both work together, It’s the great QB’s making the coordinators look better.
Brady has had how many different Coordinators? Especially if you look at who has gone onto HC jobs because of him (Weiss, McDaniels, and now possibly O’brien).
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
and let's not forget the great OLines, the great RBs and the great WRs and TEs ...
… all of which have a bearing on QB greatness, no?
upamtn - January 5, 2012
True
But if you look at our OL over the last 3 games with Orton than the previous 4 with Palko, they played a helluva lot better for/with Orton. Still have trouble in the redzone, but moving the ball, actually scoring, going more than 3 and out… Orton was sacked 1x in 3 games, Palko 11x in 4. Just saying
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
I agree ...
I still think Orton could be at least “better than average” given a gooder OLine than we have now … add to that a healthy RB, and a full off-season to work with the WR’s and … well, you get the idea
and in my book, that “better than average” with a great rest of the team, is preferable to an unproven rookie who costs us the chance to upgrade other areas for a couple of years
upamtn - January 5, 2012
Play caller calls the play. QB makes the correct play.
If a QB just runs the play that’s called exactly as it’s called all the time, the best he can be is a little above average because the DCs know what they’re doing, too.
Brsrkr - January 5, 2012
only he rode in on the BACKUP to one of the best qbs ever...

That Flynn thing sounds to familar
As with Journeyman QB cassell, who really knew anything about cassell before brady got hurt, and thats all cassell is a journeyman QB who would still be number two in new England if not for Bradys injury
antony555 - January 5, 2012
gosh, MN, I didn't know Flynn was THAT good ;-)
upamtn - January 5, 2012
It's called being a system QB.
In fact, one begins to wonder if Rodgers is really that good.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012
who is this Rodgers you speak of?
upamtn - January 5, 2012
The understudy of the awesome Matt Flynn, of course.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012
gotcha! :-)
upamtn - January 5, 2012
What if he brings Flynn with?
He was calling the plays for him too. Made him look pretty good, you know, for a backup. ;)
UNIPanther - January 5, 2012
Prior to Manning's injury
Indy’s OC probably seemed like a genius to many as well.
Supersport - January 5, 2012
If Regis gets the job, he better bring
Kelly Ripa along with him.
neiowakcfan - January 5, 2012
Mmmm...Kelly
SCKSChief - January 5, 2012
I doubt rac gets a HC job anywhere else
tasty little guinea pigs - January 5, 2012
water board pioli then will get some answers on who the head coach is
the pioli code in effect
niageriannit1 - January 5, 2012
if its him, crennel best be our DC...with gibbs and thomas on staff
otherwise its a huge fail to me
SDChief - January 5, 2012
I thought for sure that Crennel would be the head coach by now
tasty little guinea pigs - January 5, 2012
My initial reaction is that this would be great with the added bonus that maybe Philbin
would want to bring Flynn to KC. I’ll bet the possibilities were discussed. I also find Philbin’s background and experience very impressive and I personally would also bet that Crennel would continue on as DC and assistant head coach. May be a perfect situation.
Philbin’s bio:

jcox31mc - January 5, 2012
Ideally, yes, that is the perfect scenario in my book as well
but I have a hard time believing that RAC is going to accept a “demotion” to his old job. I’m still hoping RAC gets the HC job, but oh well, Pioli will do what he do.
Bonofied - January 5, 2012
I'll also add that I'm not sold on Flynn either
but if Philbin does come here and wants his guy then I’ll support him.
Bonofied - January 5, 2012
yeah, because a backup QB with one good game is far better than a backup with a season of good games
upamtn - January 5, 2012
Hey now
Flynn has had 2 good games
KingChief - January 5, 2012
^What an awesome signature...the second sentence. LMFAO
tasty little guinea pigs - January 5, 2012
ugh, we might as well just go nab kevin kolb too, make it a whole team of mediocre qb's
SDChief - January 5, 2012
hey, I didn't start this, ok? :-)
upamtn - January 5, 2012
It's a tough call
The players really like RAC, so there may be some small backlash…though I doubt it’d last long if this guy is any good. Also, I’d hate for RAC to feel slighted, and just leave after his contract is up next season.
jmcgoblue - January 5, 2012
I want Matt Flynn
So if hiring this Philbin guy can help make that happen, i’m all for it. Pretty sure Pioli could convince RAC to stay on as DC.
tasty little guinea pigs - January 5, 2012
Why
do you want Flynn? I know nothing about him and fully expect him to be Cassel 2.0
Brandt34 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Strong arm and an accurate deep ball
doesn’t sound like Cassel to me.
Hoochdawg - January 5, 2012
I want Jeff George
sorry,.. Whitlock column flashbacks
tomachop - January 5, 2012
(huge grin)
upamtn - January 5, 2012
I fully expect him to be Schaub 2.0
We can agree to disagree
tasty little guinea pigs - January 5, 2012
There is a reason
why I didn’t know that. Because he has played 2 games in the NFL. Sorry I’m just set on getting one in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft. I just don’t feel comfortable taking another teams backup again. Specially if that involves giving him a large contract for the 2 great games he played.
Brandt34 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
I want Ann Margret.

I agree with Craig, Haley and this dude's rise seem to mirror each other.
I’m a skeered it’s the guys with the pads on that make the guys with the mics on look good.
I officially don’t want this.

MNchiefsfan - January 5, 2012
He's interviewing for the Penn State Job today.
Hoochdawg - January 5, 2012
That's a different GB coach I think.
Falcon58 - January 5, 2012
The good news is that we haven't heard of Romeo being interviewed anywhere else as of now.
His stock as a potential HC went up after finishing the season 2-1, but he is a bit older than the average coach, so that might be holding him back. Plus, I wonder if he even wants to go somewhere new to HC. Maybe he’d retire after his contract expires as DC next year if not promoted, but I don’t think he leaves us this season.
Sudden - January 5, 2012
I wonder if that's cuz he really doesn't want to be a HC
Here sure, he has the relationship with the team and players he wants. Somewhere else is starting over in that department. Remember there were reports that he had been offered the interim coaching gig earlier in the season and turned it down. But all this of course is conjecture.
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
As to the "here sure"
I’m thinking the same thing. I think he feels settled here, and based on his personality, I think Romeo likes the KC area. It seems to me like he’d be happy to have this job, but would rather stay on as DC here than be a HC elsewhere. He might even slightly prefer being DC here to HC here, as he seems like he really enjoys the xs and os and working with the defensive players and scheme exclusively.
Sudden - January 5, 2012
We are of like mind
Which can be a great thing. Meaning if someone else gets the HC job and he’s ‘demoted’ to DC, RAC won’t be upset about it. I wonder if that’s part of the pitch to HC’s coming in… If you want this job, you have to take RAC as your DC. That would be a way better asterisk (IMHO) than, If you want the job you have to take Cassel as your QB.
Eastcoastransplant - January 5, 2012
I agree.
But if he brings Flynn with him, then the most important guy with the pads on just got a whole lot better. I mean, it doesn’t get much worse than Cassel.
tasty little guinea pigs - January 5, 2012
Did you forget about Palko
KingChief - January 5, 2012
Palko doesn't count
tasty little guinea pigs - January 5, 2012
Sounds like Philbin would be great for the OL too. He coaches the zone-blocking scheme.
“Philbin’s move from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator helped maintain continuity with the young offensive linemen and zone-blocking scheme. In 2006, Philbin oversaw a line that had three rookies – Daryn Colledge, Jason Spitz and Tony Moll – combine for 38 starts. Despite injuries that led to five different starting combinations, the Packers allowed only 24 sacks and improved their run production by a half-yard per carry.”
jcox31mc - January 5, 2012
FUN FACT!
the 2011 Chiefs averaged 3.9 YPC
the 2011 Packers averaged 3.9 YPC
does that mean our OC and Oline guy is as good as Philbin? hmmmm!
I do find it interesting that the paragraph above begins by emphasizing continutiy
upamtn - January 5, 2012
Oh man.
Barely Wright is about to announce something. Not being sensational at all about it.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Probably nothing new
or maybe details on how short the meeting with Fisher was and will say Pioli is bad for this franchise as we’ll never get a good coach in here.

I can't listen atm.
Someone post what he says pls.

Nick said what he will say will "make you feel bad for Scott Pioli"
Maybe its something against Clark Hunt and that he’s not committed to winning?
golfbard - January 5, 2012
So dumb.
If Pioli felt like that was the case, he’d just leave. He’s got half a dozen teams who’d take him right now.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012
is Nick going to tell us that Haley didn't love Pioli and never took out the trash at One Arrowhead Drive?
yeah, that’d make ME feel bad for Pioli … not much else would
upamtn - January 5, 2012
haha.

bossmanham - January 5, 2012

Exactly.
Oh, here goes. Upamtn looks like he’s gonna be correct.

I was right? Todd DIDN'T take out the trash?

lol
Buncha stinky garbage there.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012
Oh here it is!!!
Fischer doesn’t think Hunt wants to win, so therefore won’t come here.
This is what Wright will say, and he has no evidence for it.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012
"Never seriously talked to [Fischer]"
Really? Didn’t we interview the guy?
Wright is so dumb.
bossmanham - January 5, 2012
yeah, I think Fisher came thru the other day ...
Joel had it up as a post yesterday, in fact
pay attention!
upamtn - January 5, 2012
If you believe Gretz.
It’s like the Insider info used to be over at WPI. You pay for stuff that may amount to nothing… but is supposedly from an ‘inside source’?
Nobody has confirmed nationally that Fisher has talked to the Chiefs.
Falcon58 - January 5, 2012
and we need NATIONAL confirmation of this ... why?
upamtn - January 5, 2012
We really don't.
However, Wright is quoting an article written about someone else about Fisher’s coaching interviews and stating that Fisher won’t come to the Chiefs because he wants to go to a team whose ownership is passionate about winning the Super Bowl. And the Chiefs’ ownership doesn’t care about winning. Just filling the stadium and making money. That’s fracking depressing.
That makes me think that as much as I love the Chiefs… I wonder if I’ll see them win a Super Bowl in my lifetime.
Falcon58 - January 5, 2012
stunning, just absolutely amazing
I was right … I do NOT feel sorry for Scott Pioli
he can take out his own damned trash from now …
seriously, that was IT?
upamtn - January 5, 2012
The evidence is all around us.
Lack of spending in free agency. Lack of aggressiveness too. A nonexistent winning culture at Arrowhead. Hunt only shows up when he’s got to fire someone.
Hunt’s attitude about winning the Super Bowl is simple: If we get lucky, great! But I’m going to go focus my energy on soccer until we do.
Falcon58 - January 5, 2012
Really,.. really
thats it, damn and to think I put off going to get that twelve pack
