The NFL rumor mill is moving at a pretty good pace right now, especially with head coaches and GM-types. We know all about the Kansas City Chiefs coaching rumors -- Romeo Crennel, Joe Philbin, etc -- but one current Chiefs executive and a former Chiefs player have been mentioned in connection with front office jobs around the league.
Ray Farmer, the Chiefs Director of Pro Personnel. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports the Chicago Bears, who have an opening at GM after firing Jerry Angelo, are considering the following: Eric DeCosta from the Baltimore Ravens, Les Snead from the Atlanta Falcons...and Farmer. He's been with the Chiefs for six seasons and I'd say you're usually doing something right if you survive a regime change. No word on whether there's any serious interest there on either side.
Another candidate La Canfora mentioned is Lake Dawson. Yes, that Lake Dawson. The Chiefs drafted him in the third round of the 1994 draft and he ended up staying in KC for four seasons. He's moved onto the business side of things in the league and he's also been named as someone under consideration.
The Bears considering these guys as candidates and the candidates actually considering them are different things.

QB
I’m to the point where all I want in this offseason is a legitimate QB prospect from the higher rounds of the draft. I feel that if we got a real franchise QB we could beat anyone. I say get that QB, keep Cassel as caretaker, pick up a couple big uglies, and fill w depth. Then we will be there soon. And by there I mean playoff wins and Super Bowl.

After Luck and Griffin there are none left.

And that groan you heard to the south of KC was the Sooner nation
lamenting the return of Landry Jones.
BCRavenJHawkfan - January 5, 2012
this team has a legit young qb to groom. if its not one of the top 2-3 qb's, they might as well work on that
SDChief - January 5, 2012
DeCosta's one of the guys I was hoping the Chiefs would look at
Back before Pioli was hired.

begging the question: just how many Lake Dawsons ARE there?

That Topic picture...
Upsets me. Thats the last play of the 97 playoff game. I skipped school for 2 days after that loss. Sorry to derail off topic, but that picture brought back instant heartache.

Was that the game.....
…where Ted Popson failed to get out of bounds…..twice!
HowSweetItIs - January 5, 2012
Don't remember that part...
But i do remember the bogus holding call on the field that pushed them out of range and the Tony G catch that should have been a TD but wasn’t. Brutal.
I did get a chance to meet Lake Dawson while he was on IR during a game vs the Seahawks on a Thursday night. It was in Lamar Hunt’s box (very cool). Lake was a really nice guy and very personable. He had some big hands…

i think i may know the infuriating news
Jack Del Rio is reportedly meeting with the Chiefs Friday about a Head Coaching Gig. Hm
chiefsman! - January 5, 2012
Waste of Time
Really? Del Rio? I was never impressed with him. And his old staff even said that he checked out and didn’t work hard. Why would you even interview someone like this?
Njohnson816 - January 5, 2012
Maybe Pioli wants to hear an average HC interview
so that the right guy stands out, or he wants to compare him to Romeo Crennel.
Since they are similar caliber head coaches… If you hire Crennel permanently he should blow some of these other guys out of the water. Otherwise you are making an emotional hire of a guy that beat an undefeated team and failed to get the Chiefs into the playoffs.
Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
yeah, better we should get a guy who ran the Jags into the ground this season ...
… or an OC off a Super Bowl team, even though he’s never been HC before, but does offensive stuff for a prolific offense with one of the best QBs and … wait, didn’t we try that already?
upamtn - January 5, 2012
Difference Between Philbin And Haley
Haley was an OC for only two years…Philbin has been doing it for five. And he appears to have worked wonders not only with Rodgers (who has improved under his watch) but also Matt Flynn, while Haley inherited a HOF-caliber QB in Kurt Warner.
UCrawford - January 6, 2012
Philbin or Clements? Or McCarthy?
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
I wouldn't be infuriated by the Chiefs doing there due diligence.
It is nice to see the Chiefs studying the menu…
Hiring Jack Del Rio is an entirely different story, that would be a bad hire IMO. Nothing wrong with gauging his interest and hearing his take on the Chiefs though, maybe he is going to pitch them on a Todd Bouman tractor pulled Super Bowl run… Who knows?
No harm no foul.
Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
Jeff Fisher, Del Rio and Philbin .... due diligence?
no, sorry … due diligence would be wrapping up Crennel yesterday, followed by finding a good OC (now Philbin would work for that in my book) and DC (Emmitt Thomas? Greg Manusky, maybe?) and then proceeding to get our own FA’s wrapped up quickly …
that’s my idea of “due diligence”

what’s your thoughts on all things chiefs this offseason?

Shanghai_Chiefs - January 5, 2012
Pretty much the status quo
Give Romeo the reigns. Bring in a solid OC. Lock down Carr and Bowe. Some O line, some D line, and of course, the big one, QB. At this point, I think I’d rather see Orton than Cassel, if I had to choose between them. But we should grab a qb in the draft as well.
That’s less than 500 words, but i bet if you translate it to mandarin it’ll sound impressive.

I don't agree that Romeo Crennel is the 100% answer...
Look at it in a vacuum.
If RAC was coaching for another team, doing what he has done for the Chiefs on a different organization in the exact same way. Would you still look at him with those same longing eyes Ups?
Let’s not forget that he was not a good head coach in Cleveland, and Cleveland tried a similar re birthing with the hire of Eric Mangini (How did that work out for them?)
We have seen this story before and so has Pioli at all of his BFF backyard barbecues…
Due diligence is exploring your options, nothing wrong with that IMO. IF you still look at Crennel with love on your eyes after a few “just the tips” around the leagues coaching circles. Than bring in his player friendly mustache and make him the HC of the Chiefs… no harm in that.
Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
Right.
It’s normal to interview several people for a job, even when you already know who you’re going to give it to. Happens all the time in many/most professions.
