Interesting report coming out of KCTV5, the CBS affiliate here in KC. Michael Coleman reports that the Kansas City Chiefs will interview Jack Del Rio for the head coaching job sometime on Friday. Del Rio, of course, was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this year. He was a linebacker for the Chiefs in the '80s.
I'd be shocked if this was the move they ultimately made. It just doesn't make very much sense right now. I think the question for Chiefs candidates is: Are you better than Romeo Crennel? And I don't think you can say that without a doubt about Del Rio.
He's not exactly an inspiring candidate but, then again, neither was John Fox and Denver's in the playoffs this year.
This is the second "big name" guy we've heard connected to the Chiefs via a local report. Bob Gretz reported on Wednesday that the Chiefs interviewed Jeff Fisher last week.
While Del Rio may not make a ton of sense as a head coach, he might at defensive coordinator. The Chiefs could be hiring one depending on how the Romeo Crennel situation works out. That's something to keep in mind.
We should also point out the curious source behind this report. KCTV5's Michael Coleman doesn't have a track record of breaking Chiefs news here in KC. I'm not saying it's false or anything (In fact, it sounds like a Chiefs-type of move).I'm just pointing out that it raised my eyebrows. It was unusual.

Only hire him if he promises to wear a suit on the sidelines.
Brsrkr - January 5, 2012
Maybe in all of this jazz
…he is really interviewing for the DC job.
One of the ways I would look at this is this way. You have an expansion team opening it’s doors in LA with the Chiefs players.
Line up all of these coaches… who would you want to be the Coach?
Nothing wrong with interviewing Jack Del Rio as long as he isn’t the guy. I don’t see anything wrong with hearing his presentation on how to fix the Chiefs. The Chiefs need some new ideas, besides maybe Pioli is wanting some info on some of that left over staff in Jacksonville….
Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
Good points.

TRUTH
First I agree with you this really doesn’t make sense to me and no he is not better then Crennel. DC? Ehhhhhhh maybe, but does he even run the same scheme as crennel? Also wasn’t his work ethic by his former staff in question?
Second, you’re right I was very surprised Michael Coleman broke this story before you. I looked on NFL.Com and ESPN. and I haven’t heard anything about this anywhere else. But ehh who knows? EITHER WAY DON’T HIRE HIM AS HC!!!
Njohnson816 - January 5, 2012
KCTV5's Michael Coleman...
is the sideline guy for their pre-season games, so they probably threw him a bone.
BAyers2929 - January 5, 2012
I thought about that
But this is not a good bone. The Chiefs should know that fans would not like a move like this. It’s not a good look, IMO.
Joel Thorman - January 5, 2012
NOT A GOOD LOOK AT ALL
People are against McDaniels and even more against Del Rio if not the same
Njohnson816 - January 5, 2012
Actually, I prefer Del Rio, over McD

I like what they are doing
It would have been upsetting to me, if January 3, the Chiefs announced Romeo Crennel without looking around first. I think the Chiefs will make the second HC announcement.
They will let one team make a move and swoop in so they can get some assistants.

And Pioli knows that, he is just making sure he makes the right decision. Because he knows this hire could make or break him. IMO he needs to just hire Romeo and go after the good OC’s available before someone else hires them.

One thing I'll disagree with is
John Fox is a good coach and wasn’t considered a shaky hire. Everyone knew he was a lame duck on a team that had no qb and he had just run his course there and needed a fresh start. I always thought he was underrated.
golfbard - January 5, 2012
I agree
I always thought he was a good coach and hoped/assumed he would get another shot at HC. Just sucks that it was in Denver.
ChiefsFan4Life634 - January 5, 2012
He deserves
a lot of credit for adapting to his personnel. It takes some balls to run the read-option in the NFL. it would have been easy for him to throw his hands up and complain about the talent at QB but he decided to scrap for yards however they could.
hornetchiefsfan - January 5, 2012
Well
I for one, would like to see Mike Martz get an interview. For OC or HC if he fits.
He is a smart dude on offense and has been around the block a few times.
Matt_Grbac - January 5, 2012 via mobile
do we have a qb or line that wants to take 7 step drops?

bossmanham - January 5, 2012 via mobile
As HC of Rams
53-32 record.
Playoffs in 4 of 5 full seasons.
Is a really good OC that can put points on the board.
I say he should be a coach of great interest.
Matt_Grbac - January 5, 2012 via mobile
And he's been run off of every team he's coached for since
bh13 - January 5, 2012
Not just since, he was run off the Rams, too.
He was banned from the booth at the end. Tried to call the booth from his hospital room, and they banned him from that, too.
Brsrkr - January 5, 2012
For no good reason
Rams fired him after he was fighting a heart infection. Rams have sucked ever since!
Lions fired him after he led Kitna to career years. They got better in points the second year….Firing Martz worked out for them…right?
Martz hit the road in San Fran after Singletary took over.
Martz walked away from the Bears.
He was an outstanding head coach and OC….can’t say much bad about him
Matt_Grbac - January 5, 2012 via mobile
His teams succeed, and yet he gets fired. Hmmmmm.......
Must be that he’s a good guy, and everybody else are assholes.

Regardless of who we have at HC, whether it be Bill Cowher or Pee Wee Herman
The success of this team falls on Pioli and Hunt’s shoulders to stop being tight asses and pay money for an actual franchise QB. We can have all the best players at the other positions, but without a QB to lead the regime a Head Coach isn’t going to make much difference at this point. Solving the QB problem should be their next top priority.
Nathan4288 - January 5, 2012

They paid big money for a supposed “franchise” QB, his name is Cassell. Typically, franchise QBs aren’t bought, they’re drafted.

Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
I always thought Nolan was good running a defense
I’m not a Nolan expert, just going off what I’ve seen. I’m not sure what his 3-4 scheme is, maybe it is mote of a LaBeau or Wade Phillips type scheme with more blitzing than the Parcells type. But I would still be interested to know if he and Crennel could colaberate on a scheme. I’m still worried that Crennel being a head coach would take his focus off of what the defense has become, and in turn take a step back.

one of the players was worse than Donkey Suh … talk about a thug!
upamtn - January 5, 2012
I was talking to my mom about Suh...
I said mom doesn’t it bother you about all of this negative press that Suh is getting for his antics.
She said, “Never forget that football is a man’s game, and men aren’t always nice to each other and playing patty cake out there.”
We were discussing this as she was cheering for a Lions game and I was like really? The Lions? She said, “I always cheer for the Huskers when they move on to the NFL, especially the best.”
Weird principles that lady…

wow, sorry to hear that, Man

When judging AFC South coaches on playoff appearances
It’s important to remember they had to face Peyton Manning twice a year and that’s not exactly an easy task.
bh13 - January 5, 2012
They had a playoff team in 2007
They were actually pretty good. Then they ran into the buzzsaw that was New England in the playoffs.

Unless you're going to the college ranks
Most available coaches are rejects.

Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
If Marty Schottenhiemer wanted to be the Chiefs HC, would you approve?
i know it wont happen, but he really made us a very relevant team in the 90s.
LAChief97 - January 5, 2012
YES OMFG YES
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
Of course we would. But it’s useless to think about, as it won’t happen.
ExRoyalsFan - January 5, 2012
A Chief fan can dream cant he?
Apart from Vermiel and Marty our HC choices have been total crap these past 2 decades.
LAChief97 - January 5, 2012
we've been dreaming for the last 10 years
it’s time for action
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
30 years here

niageriannit1 - January 5, 2012
I get the feeling Pioli is just trying to convince everyone he's not just going to hand the job to Crennel
even though he is.
ChiefDJ - January 5, 2012
the fact we have fisher then del rio in for interviews seems to suggest such
SDChief - January 5, 2012
maybe pioli actually hates RAC
just a thought
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
pioli is the reason rac came to kc
haley didnt hire rac
pioli hired rac
SDChief - January 5, 2012
and before the "he hired haley" comments flow in, yes, but he hadnt been with haley in that capacity
SDChief - January 5, 2012
and Pioli hired Gailey and Weis and that qb guru and....
get the gist
Steve_Chiefs - January 5, 2012
Technically Gailey was here before Pioli
Pioli just didn’t fire him.
bh13 - January 5, 2012
you never know
it’s like hiring an employee and discovering that they don’t jibe

Steve_Chiefs - January 5, 2012
There is probably a lot to that theory...
Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
Public appearance is NOT everything. Despite what the airwaves would have you believe.
I got educated on this in last night’s open thread. The last HC to be elected by our media was Frank Gansz….
Brsrkr - January 5, 2012
Yeah
tit for tat…
Look at Denver with Tebow/Orton.
Scott Pioli probably doesn’t care too much about his image, but it is a possibility. He is after all concerned with fan interest in the Chiefs, at least as far as their dollars are concerned…
Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
I read in USA Today that Fisher meet with Clark and Scott in Dallas last week. After about a 30 minute meeting, Fisher got up and advised them he was not interested.
Here is a owner/son that has not won a playoff game in 20 years and an inexperience GM laying out what they think will make them a winner. It’s sad that we think the Chiefs would be a dream organization to work for but I don’t see other coaches flocking to knock the Chiefs door down.
NFL season ticket holder - January 5, 2012
Whose doors are they knocking down?
Tarkus - January 5, 2012
Perhaps
Chief-blinders-on - January 5, 2012
fisher
is overrated. how many afc championships has he won? Zero. How many Super Bowls? Zero. Why is the media propping this guy up like he’s the second coming of Vince Lombardi??
perhaps this guy doesnt have a clue about what it takes to win a championship besides have several winning seasons
michaelaglover - January 5, 2012
wait
yeah, he has won one afc championship. my bad.
michaelaglover - January 5, 2012
1 yard away from a SB victory.
ExRoyalsFan - January 6, 2012
and he never sniffed another one, either
michaelaglover - January 6, 2012
His team the next year was better than that one
they just couldn’t beat Baltimore (who eventually won) – if that team beat Balt they would have had a great shot at the SB title.
Ochophosphate - January 6, 2012
When’s the last time we “sniffed” one?
ExRoyalsFan - January 6, 2012
TIE!
last 7 times I’m saying it – tie tie tie tie tie tie tie
1 yard away from pushing it to OT, not a W!
Ochophosphate - January 6, 2012
why would anyone CARE if he did?
upamtn - January 5, 2012
no one is complaining on here, simply pointed out what may be true, that crennel is the guy and the chiefs are doing all the rooney rule requirements as such
no big deal….
but he does have to interview others, and by putting big names out there, its a good way to make it appear like a legit head coaching search
SDChief - January 6, 2012
personally did not like him in jacksonville.....this would be freaking difficult to accept
SDChief - January 5, 2012
Sign him up
but only if he brings Todd Bouman as his Franchise QB
ExRoyalsFan - January 5, 2012
Todd Bouman= poor mans chunkier version of Kurt Warner
LAChief97 - January 5, 2012
But instead of sacking groceries, he is a god-fearing American who drives farm machinery.
ExRoyalsFan - January 5, 2012
can he throw a tractor?
Chiefshero - January 5, 2012
I have a serious question.
Does Jack Del Rio have a lazy eye? Or does he just have a very wide head whereby his eyes have never met one another?
hornetchiefsfan - January 5, 2012
Otis Taylor punched his face once.
Brsrkr - January 5, 2012
i find it interesting that none of the players have leaked any info as to who might be the next hc coach
u would think romeo but u never know about pioli
niageriannit1 - January 5, 2012
You really think the players know any more than we do?
bh13 - January 5, 2012
well with agents and contracts up u would think u would here so info on a new coach

what happened to clarks pittsburgh model
its got to be cowher
niageriannit1 - January 5, 2012
that model ended when he hired New England
upamtn - January 5, 2012
cowher doesnt seem too enticed to leave retitrement.
would take the right east coast job to open up
coughlin gets fired from giants, now thats a job I can see him taking, but he wont be this year
SDChief - January 6, 2012
parcells is the hire
niageriannit1 - January 5, 2012
pioli
gm/head coach
The DBowe Show - January 5, 2012
here's why we haven't named a hc yet.
pioli first question at the interview. so if given the hc position u will have cassel as your qb.answer thanks for the interview i got to go catch a flight to miami.
niageriannit1 - January 5, 2012
If he was tied to Cassel like people think
He wouldn’t have brought in Orton
KCinIL - January 5, 2012
I have some rope ...
maybe we can bundle them as a “package deal” to someone
upamtn - January 5, 2012
Orton had nothing to do with Cassel, other than that Cassel was on IR.
Standard emergency hire midseason, when your #1 goes down.
hmills110 - January 5, 2012
No it's not
We didn’t sign another “big name” S or RB or TE. If Cassel was a slam dunk #1 next year like people think we would’ve kept rolling Palko or even Stanzi out there. He saw what we saw and how Orton was light years ahead of Cassel in this offense. Not sure where people base this off of
KCinIL - January 6, 2012
Why didn't he lock up Orton then?
old_school - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Who's to say he's not?
The season JUST ended. And I’m sure he wants to talk to Bowe/Carr first.
KCinIL - January 6, 2012
as a haley supporter, I have to say this whole cassel love story with pioli gets old.
we get it, pioli brought cassel here as many would have at that time for a 2nd round pick if they needed a starting qb. it hasnt worked out, but by NO means has pioli stuck with him for too long, he just didnt get a good enough of a backup til orton was dumped by the dumb broncos who dont want a 3rd round comp pick.
cassel did have a solid year in 2010, he regressed this year
now its time to cut the cord
SDChief - January 6, 2012
I really hope you are right
After this year’s debacle, I have a hard time giving Pioli the benefit of the doubt until he proves me wrong. Hopefully good news comes in the weeks and months to come.
old_school - January 6, 2012 via mobile
No thanks
Him coming in means RAC going out. Del Rios name is also supposedly coming up in Raider DC discussions.
GenericBrand - January 5, 2012
Now if this is RAC HC and Del Rio running his defense then sign me up.
GenericBrand - January 5, 2012
Jags don't use 3-4 ... right?
upamtn - January 5, 2012
4-3 as far as I know
BAMFSpecialOps - January 6, 2012
see that is the interesting thing to me. a lot of 4-3 head coaching candidates in fisher and del rio
SDChief - January 6, 2012
I'm not sure it means much
I would rather keep RAC as DC, hire a OC, and have a HC who doesn’t try to take a part in everything, but mainly deal with the HC duties
BAMFSpecialOps - January 6, 2012
Fisher isn't a 4-3 head coach.
Fisher is an offensive guy not defense.
GenericBrand - January 6, 2012
He's always been a defensive guy.
I think you might be getting him confused with Kevin Gilbride, who was with the Oilers at the same time as Fisher. Both have fairly good mustaches.
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
Ugh you're right I have him mixed up
GenericBrand - January 6, 2012
Jags ran both 4-3 and 3-4
Washingtons albino DC came from strictly 4-3 and is running a 3-4 so its not outside the realm of possibility. Whats great about Del Rio is, maybe he didnt fare so well in the wins/losses but he got more out of less then probably any coach in the league.
GenericBrand - January 6, 2012
This would be a bad move
I actually don’t think Del Rio is a horrible coach, but he certainly isn’t one I look at and think “this guy could get us to the Super Bowl”
Flowers24 - January 5, 2012
I Guess...
for some of us things are going too damn slow! Leaving year 3 of the GREAT Pioli Era: No #1 WR under contract. Only ONE starting CB under contract! Coaching “Search!” Last summer he went sleep walking through free agency! It just seems that for a franchise lacking any depth, that we have A LOT of distractions right now! Sorry for the less then optimistic view point! I’m just tired of not winning playoff games. January 16, 1994 is a LONG time ago and the Houston Oilers aren’t around anymore!
Jason Drue Keith - January 6, 2012
I hope he's being offered the DC position
Romeo as HC del rio DC & anyone other than muir for OC. That’d be pretty decent

That’s if Lovie is kept on.
GenericBrand - January 6, 2012
id rather just go get billick who at least runs a 3-4
SDChief - January 6, 2012
He is an ''offense minded'' coach though isnt he?
BAMFSpecialOps - January 6, 2012
His MN teams (that he OC'd for) were 4-3.
And so were his first few teams in Baltimore…The Siragusa days I believe.
