Report Says Jack Del Rio Will Interview With Chiefs

Interesting report coming out of KCTV5, the CBS affiliate here in KC. Michael Coleman reports that the Kansas City Chiefs will interview Jack Del Rio for the head coaching job sometime on Friday. Del Rio, of course, was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this year. He was a linebacker for the Chiefs in the '80s.

I'd be shocked if this was the move they ultimately made. It just doesn't make very much sense right now. I think the question for Chiefs candidates is: Are you better than Romeo Crennel? And I don't think you can say that without a doubt about Del Rio.

He's not exactly an inspiring candidate but, then again, neither was John Fox and Denver's in the playoffs this year.

This is the second "big name" guy we've heard connected to the Chiefs via a local report. Bob Gretz reported on Wednesday that the Chiefs interviewed Jeff Fisher last week.

While Del Rio may not make a ton of sense as a head coach, he might at defensive coordinator. The Chiefs could be hiring one depending on how the Romeo Crennel situation works out. That's something to keep in mind.

We should also point out the curious source behind this report. KCTV5's Michael Coleman doesn't have a track record of breaking Chiefs news here in KC. I'm not saying it's false or anything (In fact, it sounds like a Chiefs-type of move).I'm just pointing out that it raised my eyebrows. It was unusual.

TRUTH

First I agree with you this really doesn’t make sense to me and no he is not better then Crennel. DC? Ehhhhhhh maybe, but does he even run the same scheme as crennel? Also wasn’t his work ethic by his former staff in question?

Second, you’re right I was very surprised Michael Coleman broke this story before you. I looked on NFL.Com and ESPN. and I haven’t heard anything about this anywhere else. But ehh who knows? EITHER WAY DON’T HIRE HIM AS HC!!!

KCTV5's Michael Coleman...

is the sideline guy for their pre-season games, so they probably threw him a bone.

I thought about that

But this is not a good bone. The Chiefs should know that fans would not like a move like this. It’s not a good look, IMO.

NOT A GOOD LOOK AT ALL

People are against McDaniels and even more against Del Rio if not the same

Actually, I prefer Del Rio, over McD
I prefer niether of them actually :D
I mean, i can say that here all of us want RAC, but if the choice if between McD or Del Rio, i would chose Del Rio.
I'd prefer icepicks in my ears to McHoodie
But it would fit with your perception of our front office.
somehow I dobt Baldwin’s coach ASKED him to be a pain in the ass

but he did it anyway

Haley didn’t "allow" 2.7 to go off on his tweeter insanity, but he did it anyway …

I could see one, maybe … but the FIRST PICK? and then hearing of issues with Houston … no, I’m seeing a disregard for the things that matter in that department, and that bothers me a great deal

again, in my mind it’s a sellout of principles

I like what they are doing

It would have been upsetting to me, if January 3, the Chiefs announced Romeo Crennel without looking around first. I think the Chiefs will make the second HC announcement.

They will let one team make a move and swoop in so they can get some assistants.

DelRio is a 4-3 defensive guy.

Why does Pioli bother.

Makes em look like they don't have a clue who they want

or for what

If they did, wouldn't that technically make them prejudiced?
Decisive?

We fired Haley to get 3 weeks to decide on our new coach prior to everyone else having an edge

Uh no, blown advantage

I work with several people who like to think they are decisive because they are too lazy to gather information before puking out a so-called decision.

I have to clean up a lot of their messes.

what information is being gathered?

would we grill Del Rio on how bad the Jags are?

http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/101704/jag_16934098.shtml

According to reports in The Kansas City Star, when one of the replacement candidates accused Del Rio of slashing the tires of his car, Taylor stepped in and tried to break up the argument.

Del Rio reportedly called Taylor “a dirty scab and a lowlife,” then slammed the then-45-year-old retired player into the ground. Violence ensued for three minutes before Hackett could break up the fight, and Taylor came away with a bloodied face, the reports said.
Pioli had not a clue that that happened
In semi-related news,

the Bottom Line says that O’Brien is headed to PSU.

I saw it on Rotoworld

And it doesn’t credit that station as reporting it, so it may not have come from them first.

Yeah Rotoworld credited them

And they broke it.

You are correct sir

I didn’t see that in the box below. I guess I’m used to reading it in the main body of the little newsbreaker. My bad.

I broke it on AP

cough cough….just messin!

someone on that last post did

Thorman’s late to the party … as usual ;-)

Due diligence.

I think Romeo’s got the job.

Still thinking that as well

Could be surprised but that’s still my guess.

I think Romeo has the job,

And Pioli knows that, he is just making sure he makes the right decision. Because he knows this hire could make or break him. IMO he needs to just hire Romeo and go after the good OC’s available before someone else hires them.

when is romeo supposed to have his interview
after Jeff Fisher signs

his ridiculous contract with the rams or dolphins…

u think pioli wants to see what other teams are going to pay for a head coach
I think

he might have told Romeo what he probably already knows a week ago but is trying to drive-up the price for fisher.

why would anyone give a rat's ass what another team pays for Fisher or anyone else?
Exactly

If the Chiefs want a guy, they will pay him and that coach wants to be here, he will take the money.

Jobs get filled in the NFL, even the Raiders job was never vacant.

Phillipin

Or whatever his name is…the packers dude…I think he was interviewing for an OC job.

He has an OC job.
lateral move?

while the iron is hot?

He might move here for the chance to call plays.
Awesome

I live here already can I call plays

Can you draw up draw plays to McCluster?
You're not a very tough interviewer.

The running game needs a boost, as long as we don’t trade up for a running back like San Diego, Im good.

Only RG3's feet could manage that play.
thats what Fisher told Pioli

I said Cassel with my fingers crossed

LOL Steve
I live here already can I call plays

McCarthy ain’t going anywhere, and RAC is on the high side of 60… I’d be OK with that. And let RAC keep calling the D, and bring in an assistant for that, maybe promoting Pleasant or Thomas or…

I think he was interviewing for the stop spot....

I say maybe the Chiefs name their head coach on the 16th of January

One thing I'll disagree with is

John Fox is a good coach and wasn’t considered a shaky hire. Everyone knew he was a lame duck on a team that had no qb and he had just run his course there and needed a fresh start. I always thought he was underrated.

I agree

I always thought he was a good coach and hoped/assumed he would get another shot at HC. Just sucks that it was in Denver.

He deserves

a lot of credit for adapting to his personnel. It takes some balls to run the read-option in the NFL. it would have been easy for him to throw his hands up and complain about the talent at QB but he decided to scrap for yards however they could.

Well

I for one, would like to see Mike Martz get an interview. For OC or HC if he fits.

He is a smart dude on offense and has been around the block a few times.

do we have a qb or line that wants to take 7 step drops?

granted i’m only going on what others say about the guy. could be fun, could be a trainwreck.

He's been around the block because everybody he meets tells him to keep movin'.

Seriously, if people think Haley and Pioli have big egos, wait till they get a load of this guy.

Yeah, they have nothing on Martz.
I think he has been around the block so much

that he needs to take a breather

I brought this up and people had a very negative reaction.
As HC of Rams

53-32 record.

Playoffs in 4 of 5 full seasons.

Is a really good OC that can put points on the board.

I say he should be a coach of great interest.

And he's been run off of every team he's coached for since
Not just since, he was run off the Rams, too.

He was banned from the booth at the end. Tried to call the booth from his hospital room, and they banned him from that, too.

For no good reason

Rams fired him after he was fighting a heart infection. Rams have sucked ever since!

Lions fired him after he led Kitna to career years. They got better in points the second year….Firing Martz worked out for them…right?

Martz hit the road in San Fran after Singletary took over.

Martz walked away from the Bears.

He was an outstanding head coach and OC….can’t say much bad about him

His teams succeed, and yet he gets fired. Hmmmmm.......

Must be that he’s a good guy, and everybody else are assholes.

He didn't help that line in Chicago any
KC had what

can’t recall, like 7 sacks? or am i over exaggerating

And Martz took over a SB champion that slowly melted away before his eyes.

Got all he’t up about QB, when the problem wasn’t Warner. The problem was O-Line and ignoring it, because he loves his toys.

how many did the Giants have in that one game at Chi last year ... 11? whatever ...

shocked Cutler survived at all

I think it was like a million

Martz didn’t seal the holes in their swiss cheese line, that is a certainty.

In fairness to Martz, the GM went on a FA spending spree,

but never addressed OL or WR. Just stuck a fancy QB in there and expected miracles from a KR and Roy Williams.

Pioli and Martz?

Someone is going to bleed

gosh, i would disown the chiefs

im not kidding

i have legit real reason to dislike that man, he ruined what was an awesome situation in st louis

Head spinning on a stick

Regardless of who we have at HC, whether it be Bill Cowher or Pee Wee Herman

The success of this team falls on Pioli and Hunt’s shoulders to stop being tight asses and pay money for an actual franchise QB. We can have all the best players at the other positions, but without a QB to lead the regime a Head Coach isn’t going to make much difference at this point. Solving the QB problem should be their next top priority.

????

They paid big money for a supposed “franchise” QB, his name is Cassell. Typically, franchise QBs aren’t bought, they’re drafted.

Regardless of if we draft or spend we need to make a move. If we have to give up a shit ton to move up in the draft then so be it.

of if we draft or spend we need to make a move. If we have to give up a shit ton to move up in the draft then so be it. Something needs to change.

I will take Pee Wee Herman over Del Rio. At least when we are 0-16 or 1-15, we will have a good reason behind it.
Pee Wee had a Word of the Day

“WHATTHEFUCK”

was not one of them

Smartass
that was not one of them either :)

good pick

Damn. I tried.
PeeWee Herman ... YES!
OK this is getting ridiculous now

Just make the announcement that RAC is the next coach.

Obama for Chiefs Head Coach?
YES WE CAN....

next time…

no hope and change with that move

i wonder if obama filled out his playoff bracket yet

Change

We can believe in?

continuity we can believe in
i wonder what half wright might try and tell us tomorrow

that pioli hired parcells

Does Jax run a 3-4 Defense?

No

So what the hell

They also interviewed Jeff Fisher

so after that, does it matter?

It shows us that Pioli isn’t limiting himself to scheme… Maybe if Fisher goes down to Miami we can snag Mike Nolan?

We don't need an old master for DC, we need a young sponge.

If Romeo comes back. Please come back, Romeo.

If Romeo is named HC we have an opening somewhere...
Yeah, but Romeo had better still have a hand in the defense.

He’s the best around at coaching a 3-4 two-gap defense, and our defense is currently built for that. It would be great if he could bring along a young jedi for a time before he retires.

Squidalicious

ok
I don't get it either.

I guess he doesn’t think much of my opinions.

We don’t need an old master for DC, we need a young sponge.

Brsrkr

Don't waste good humor on the internet Steve...
My memory only has a one-comment bandwidth.
If they don't bring in an outside guy

It’ll be Gibbs or Thomas, neither are spring chickens, but I would be happy with either being promoted… For, at least they aren’t Wannstedt… ugh Buffalo?

Mike Nolan would kill with this defense IMO, and Romeo will have his hands in the defense no matter what if he is the HC…

I always thought Nolan was good running a defense

I’m not a Nolan expert, just going off what I’ve seen. I’m not sure what his 3-4 scheme is, maybe it is mote of a LaBeau or Wade Phillips type scheme with more blitzing than the Parcells type. But I would still be interested to know if he and Crennel could colaberate on a scheme. I’m still worried that Crennel being a head coach would take his focus off of what the defense has become, and in turn take a step back.

It is more of a 1 gap blitz scheme

Same scheme ran in Green Bay

I almost wonder if that's Pleasant

He played for Romeo, now he’s coaching with him.

Maybe.
I like the DL background.
maybe weis will get an interview he been at kansas for a month now

that long enough

for a normal person

would have been drunk for 29 days now :)

strange, why do we keep interviewing rejects?
Which available coaches aren't rejects... Cowher?

Dungy?

so we fired todd haley because he was inefficient

to hire a guy who got fired from the jags?

firing a loser for a loser…

I don't think they are going to hire Jack Del Rio...

I wouldn’t fret.

I rather have fisher than del rio

Maurice Jones Drew + david garrard and still no playoffs appearance…

I don't think anyone is getting to the playoffs with that dynamic duo...
better than having too-scared-to-get-touched-gabbert
Eveyone would have been making love to themselves around here (more than usual)

if the Chiefs had drafted Gabbert… just saying.

Not me, and I'm a Mizzou fan.

He had the exact same faults in college that he’s shown in Jax.

Im definitely not a fan

but a lot of folks wanted him…

A lot of those folks were not Mizzou fans

and didn’t watch Mizzou games.

Watching a Mizzou football game is like kicking yourself in the nutz

Can’t blame them…

Either way, he was mock drafted o’plenty. Chiefs fans just wanted a QB.

Not true

Being a Mizzou fan is like kicking oneself in the nuts

Game day is different

I gotta admit, Pelini is much more entertaining on the sideline than Pinkel.

Especially in bowl losses.

/bad example for young men

Everyone has good faces on the internet

This one is great

hey, at least we got a basketball team for a change
Was looking for more funny pictures, and found this. Somehow, I feel much more peaceful now :)

there ya go ... an appreciation of the finer things in life
Baywatch loves a champion

Sniffle..sniffle..awe..yesteryear.

Dammit that should say 1993 too...

Robbed I tell you…

you see that video of the HS basketball game in Wash State

showing like half dozen flagrant fouls that were never called

one of the players was worse than Donkey Suh … talk about a thug!

I was talking to my mom about Suh...

I said mom doesn’t it bother you about all of this negative press that Suh is getting for his antics.

She said, “Never forget that football is a man’s game, and men aren’t always nice to each other and playing patty cake out there.”

We were discussing this as she was cheering for a Lions game and I was like really? The Lions? She said, “I always cheer for the Huskers when they move on to the NFL, especially the best.”

Weird principles that lady…

wow, sorry to hear that, Man

have you suggested therapy … ?

She'd need more than that

Not everyone loves and appreciates only the goody goodies and angelic smile wearers Ups.

It truly is, too each their own.

heh, I hear ya
Can you blame him? Look at who his last couple of coaches have been.
LOL

fruit don’t fall far from the tree

and Haley got the Boot
exactly. TH>JDR
I think HIV would call

him a “mouthbreather”

Big Mizzou fan

and saw his shortcomings and didn’t care for him. Thought jax made a mistake drafting him.

When judging AFC South coaches on playoff appearances

It’s important to remember they had to face Peyton Manning twice a year and that’s not exactly an easy task.

They had a playoff team in 2007

They were actually pretty good. Then they ran into the buzzsaw that was New England in the playoffs.

Unless you're going to the college ranks

Most available coaches are rejects.

can we pull a 49ers?
The only remaining Harbaugh is too old.
dang it
No sisters in the family tree?
a female HC?

would be nice for a change

more

our new OLine Coach?

one can dream, right?

that was the assumption heh
Is it Whoopie or Goldie?

Perhaps a ringer like Peggy Hill

If Marty Schottenhiemer wanted to be the Chiefs HC, would you approve?

i know it wont happen, but he really made us a very relevant team in the 90s.

Of course we would. But it’s useless to think about, as it won’t happen.

A Chief fan can dream cant he?

Apart from Vermiel and Marty our HC choices have been total crap these past 2 decades.

we've been dreaming for the last 10 years

it’s time for action

30 years here
yeah war paint the horse has been waiting long too
I get the feeling Pioli is just trying to convince everyone he's not just going to hand the job to Crennel

even though he is.

the fact we have fisher then del rio in for interviews seems to suggest such
maybe pioli actually hates RAC

just a thought

pioli is the reason rac came to kc

haley didnt hire rac

pioli hired rac

and before the "he hired haley" comments flow in, yes, but he hadnt been with haley in that capacity
and Pioli hired Gailey and Weis and that qb guru and....

get the gist

Technically Gailey was here before Pioli

Pioli just didn’t fire him.

you never know

it’s like hiring an employee and discovering that they don’t jibe

Pioli also worked with Romeo in NE.
again, just because you work with someone for a while does not mean you like them

some employees become total assholes after a while

dang I thought I was liked
you were cool in the beginning

..until your alcoholic visions

those were dreams

:)

not when you're flaying your arms and yelling random rants
I laugh in my sleep

true story

There is probably a lot to that theory...
Public appearance is NOT everything. Despite what the airwaves would have you believe.

I got educated on this in last night’s open thread. The last HC to be elected by our media was Frank Gansz….

Yeah

tit for tat…

Look at Denver with Tebow/Orton.

Scott Pioli probably doesn’t care too much about his image, but it is a possibility. He is after all concerned with fan interest in the Chiefs, at least as far as their dollars are concerned…

I read in USA Today that Fisher meet with Clark and Scott in Dallas last week. After about a 30 minute meeting, Fisher got up and advised them he was not interested.

Here is a owner/son that has not won a playoff game in 20 years and an inexperience GM laying out what they think will make them a winner. It’s sad that we think the Chiefs would be a dream organization to work for but I don’t see other coaches flocking to knock the Chiefs door down.

Whose doors are they knocking down?
fisher

is overrated. how many afc championships has he won? Zero. How many Super Bowls? Zero. Why is the media propping this guy up like he’s the second coming of Vince Lombardi??

perhaps this guy doesnt have a clue about what it takes to win a championship besides have several winning seasons

wait

yeah, he has won one afc championship. my bad.

1 yard away from a SB victory.

and he never sniffed another one, either
His team the next year was better than that one

they just couldn’t beat Baltimore (who eventually won) – if that team beat Balt they would have had a great shot at the SB title.

When’s the last time we “sniffed” one?

TIE!

last 7 times I’m saying it – tie tie tie tie tie tie tie

1 yard away from pushing it to OT, not a W!

why would anyone CARE if he did?
I get the feeling Pioli is just trying to convince everyone he’s not just going to hand the job to Crennel

even though he is.
no one is complaining on here, simply pointed out what may be true, that crennel is the guy and the chiefs are doing all the rooney rule requirements as such

no big deal….

but he does have to interview others, and by putting big names out there, its a good way to make it appear like a legit head coaching search

personally did not like him in jacksonville.....this would be freaking difficult to accept
Sign him up

but only if he brings Todd Bouman as his Franchise QB

Todd Bouman= poor mans chunkier version of Kurt Warner

But instead of sacking groceries, he is a god-fearing American who drives farm machinery.

can he throw a tractor?
I have a serious question.

Does Jack Del Rio have a lazy eye? Or does he just have a very wide head whereby his eyes have never met one another?

Otis Taylor punched his face once.
i find it interesting that none of the players have leaked any info as to who might be the next hc coach

u would think romeo but u never know about pioli

You really think the players know any more than we do?
well with agents and contracts up u would think u would here so info on a new coach
Pioli is exploring all options

is len dawson available?
Too soon, Steve. Too soon.
would joe paterno be interested in the chiefs???
what happened to clarks pittsburgh model

its got to be cowher

that model ended when he hired New England
cowher doesnt seem too enticed to leave retitrement.

would take the right east coast job to open up

coughlin gets fired from giants, now thats a job I can see him taking, but he wont be this year

parcells is the hire
pioli

gm/head coach

here's why we haven't named a hc yet.

pioli first question at the interview. so if given the hc position u will have cassel as your qb.answer thanks for the interview i got to go catch a flight to miami.

If he was tied to Cassel like people think

He wouldn’t have brought in Orton

I have some rope ...

maybe we can bundle them as a “package deal” to someone

Orton had nothing to do with Cassel, other than that Cassel was on IR.

Standard emergency hire midseason, when your #1 goes down.

No it's not

We didn’t sign another “big name” S or RB or TE. If Cassel was a slam dunk #1 next year like people think we would’ve kept rolling Palko or even Stanzi out there. He saw what we saw and how Orton was light years ahead of Cassel in this offense. Not sure where people base this off of

Why didn't he lock up Orton then?
Who's to say he's not?

The season JUST ended. And I’m sure he wants to talk to Bowe/Carr first.

as a haley supporter, I have to say this whole cassel love story with pioli gets old.

we get it, pioli brought cassel here as many would have at that time for a 2nd round pick if they needed a starting qb. it hasnt worked out, but by NO means has pioli stuck with him for too long, he just didnt get a good enough of a backup til orton was dumped by the dumb broncos who dont want a 3rd round comp pick.

cassel did have a solid year in 2010, he regressed this year

now its time to cut the cord

I really hope you are right

After this year’s debacle, I have a hard time giving Pioli the benefit of the doubt until he proves me wrong. Hopefully good news comes in the weeks and months to come.

No thanks

Him coming in means RAC going out. Del Rios name is also supposedly coming up in Raider DC discussions.

Now if this is RAC HC and Del Rio running his defense then sign me up.
Jags don't use 3-4 ... right?
4-3 as far as I know
see that is the interesting thing to me. a lot of 4-3 head coaching candidates in fisher and del rio
I'm not sure it means much

I would rather keep RAC as DC, hire a OC, and have a HC who doesn’t try to take a part in everything, but mainly deal with the HC duties

Fisher isn't a 4-3 head coach.

Fisher is an offensive guy not defense.

He's always been a defensive guy.

I think you might be getting him confused with Kevin Gilbride, who was with the Oilers at the same time as Fisher. Both have fairly good mustaches.

Ugh you're right I have him mixed up
Jags ran both 4-3 and 3-4

Washingtons albino DC came from strictly 4-3 and is running a 3-4 so its not outside the realm of possibility. Whats great about Del Rio is, maybe he didnt fare so well in the wins/losses but he got more out of less then probably any coach in the league.

This would be a bad move

I actually don’t think Del Rio is a horrible coach, but he certainly isn’t one I look at and think “this guy could get us to the Super Bowl”

I Guess...

for some of us things are going too damn slow! Leaving year 3 of the GREAT Pioli Era: No #1 WR under contract. Only ONE starting CB under contract! Coaching “Search!” Last summer he went sleep walking through free agency! It just seems that for a franchise lacking any depth, that we have A LOT of distractions right now! Sorry for the less then optimistic view point! I’m just tired of not winning playoff games. January 16, 1994 is a LONG time ago and the Houston Oilers aren’t around anymore!

I hope he's being offered the DC position

Romeo as HC del rio DC & anyone other than muir for OC. That’d be pretty decent

I could see Haley showing up in Chicago with Lovie now that Martz is gone

That’s if Lovie is kept on.

id rather just go get billick who at least runs a 3-4
He is an ''offense minded'' coach though isnt he?
His MN teams (that he OC'd for) were 4-3.

And so were his first few teams in Baltimore…The Siragusa days I believe.

When Michael Coleman talks, you listen
I hope this is just to meet the requirement of the # candidates they have to interview
I would love this hire.. I have always though Del Rio was a good coach. He always got a lot of what he had to work with.
Otis Taylor

may disagree.

Taylor, a Chiefs receiving great and star of their Super Bowl IV victory over Minnesota in 1969, was a scout for the team at the time, and was bringing in potential replacement players for workouts.

I know the story, but i love the attitude he brings!! What do you expect he was a LB :)
dont doubt this report at all

an interview is an interview….dosen’t mean anything “ground breaking”

No way in f$&@/?* hell
