The Kansas City Chiefs have signed a number of their young players to contract extensions over the last year and a half including K Ryan Succop and LB Brandon Siler in the last week.
We can now add another name to the list -- LB Cory Greenwood. Brian McIntyre reported this morning (and I can separately confirm) that the Chiefs signed him to a four-year extension worth $2.75 million. Check out the details of the contract here.
Greenwood was originally the third overall pick in the 2010 CFL draft before deciding to go the NFL route and sign with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. He's been active in every game the last two years and is among the team leaders in special teams tackles.
The Chiefs have really done a pretty good job of extending some of their own guys since last season -- Jamaal Charles, Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali, to name a few.
But...we're still waiting for the Chiefs to reel in the two big fish this offseason -- Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr.

Booya!!!
AFC West Champs 2012!!!
SwimCoach - January 6, 2012
seriously though
I like the signing. Solid special teams player. Not a sexy signing, but this is good news.
People are going to say, WHY AREN’T YOU SIGNING BOWE AND CARR?
Who are you to say they aren’t spending hours and hours on trying to get them to sign a deal. Guys like Siler, Succop, Greenwood are probably WAY easier to negotiate with.
SwimCoach - January 6, 2012
this is great news, but why aren't they signing Bowe and Carr?
/obligatory
upamtn - January 6, 2012
I always thought Pioli didn't really like Bowe
He is kind of a knucklehead. But Carr is surprising. If he hasn’t been signed yet he must be headed for free agency. When you think back to the Patriots though, they did let a lot of good CBs walk. Pioli must either think Jalil Brown can handle it or he can find someone else in the draft.
Chatch McNasty - January 6, 2012
What has Pioli ever said or did
to make you think he doesn’t like Bowe?
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
McNasty ... I think you mistook my (not apparent) sarcasm as actual concern
I have little doubt that both Bowe and Carr will be re-signed in due time … the season has just ended, it’s early yet, no hurry … no worries
upamtn - January 6, 2012
It's already been 5 days.
WHY AREN’T THESE GUYS SIGNED YET!?
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
As long as they get it done before FA starts I'm A-OK
And if it turns out one of them was asking for insane amounts of money… all right then.
What was the deal Flowers got? 10 mil a year?
MNchiefsfan - January 6, 2012
Something like that.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
If we look back over the last few Pioli years, what's the average timeline of signings?
We’re what, a week into the offseason (well the offseason for us :-( ) I don’t think there is any need to freak out yet. I agree with you. We have till FA before I start freaking out.
Eastcoastransplant - January 6, 2012
remember, with Pioli the important thing isn't TIME line ... it's BOTTOM line
upamtn - January 6, 2012
Tamba and Flowers want to argue the point
MNchiefsfan - January 6, 2012
$10 Mil/year did you say?
have I mentioned that I play CB online in a fantasy world in my head that …
upamtn - January 6, 2012
Carr was the last guy to sign his tender last year
Maybe he just doesn’t want to play here
saints_chiefsfan1979 - January 6, 2012
Could be
Maybe he wants to be known as a number 1 corner, not a “tandem” with Flowers.
MNchiefsfan - January 6, 2012
he would get destroyed as the numer 1 guy
But, if we franchise him, he and Dorsey and picks to move up to that 1 spot Heeeeeyyy
saints_chiefsfan1979 - January 6, 2012
You just replied to yourself and asked "Who are you."
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
evil twin, obviously
upamtn - January 6, 2012
re-read
SwimCoach - January 6, 2012
No. Once was enough. I intentionally misinterpreted.
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
And pretty funny!
electriclight - January 6, 2012
If nothing else, it gives people something to whine about.
As if your signings have to be done in order of priority.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Great move
This isn’t the kind of move that will garner any media attention, but I think it’s a very smart move. He’s a special teams beast and should take over as a leader on the unit for Demorrio Williams (who enters the final year of his contract at around $5M so I’d bet would be a cap casualty).
kc_radrh8r - January 6, 2012
this IS a great move, but why aren't they signing Bowe and ... oh, wait ...
never mind!
upamtn - January 6, 2012
yes because we can win with only an offense and defense
not like special teams ever won us games or something..oh wait….
never mind!
Chiefshero - January 6, 2012
How about signing someone who matters?
Not fucking kickers and career special teamers?
HIV 2 Elway - January 6, 2012
Well, he IS Canadian.
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
It has to be WAY easier to sign guys like this
compared to stars like Bowe or potential stars like Carr. The negotiations probably took all of 30 minutes with Greenwood’s agents. Get that out of the way so you can devote more energy to the bigger players. Seems like good business to me.
cheapham - January 6, 2012
Disagree
Sign the players you need first. Check how much cap space you have left after doing so and then look to improve on players like Greenwood. Build the roster from the top down not from the bottom up
HIV 2 Elway - January 6, 2012 via mobile
or perhaps the Chiefs are negotiating with Carr and Bowe at the same time as Succop, Greenwood, et al.
But since Carr and Bowe have more leverage (because they aren’t kickers or career special teamers) the negotiations with them take longer.
PVChiefsfan - January 6, 2012
And their contracts are more complicated with incentives, deferrals, etc.
The time line’s probably related to simple quantity of paperwork as much as anything else.
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
Carr and Bowe certainly have performed well enough to leverage bigger contracts
But if we fail to sign one or both of them it won’t be because we ran out of money after having paid Bobby Greenwood
PVChiefsfan - January 6, 2012
Seriously, especially considering the amount of cap space this team has
A number which several people here never tire of quoting.
cheapham - January 6, 2012
A few of the same people who worry that Greenwood takes up potential Bowe space.
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
not Bobby, Cory
stagdsp - January 6, 2012 via mobile
And
those two players are probably being told by their agents to see what their value is on the open market. In their case, it would be foolish to sign an extension without seeing what they could receive elsewhere.
kc_radrh8r - January 6, 2012
They were waiting to see what Greenwood got.
electriclight - January 6, 2012
You mean, like they did with Cassel?
neiowakcfan - January 6, 2012
Agree.
Probably went something like:
“And I think you’ll see, that my client has made great contributions to special teams, has filled in nicely on the defense in a few situations, and ultimately deserves four years for four million.”
“What? Are you still here? Didn’t I call a plumber?”
“I’m not a plumber, sir, I’m…”
“Ohh, are you an assistant to Bowe’s agent? He wants another four million? Tell him we’ll think about it.”
“On second thought, we’ll take 2.75 million over four years.”
sea_people - January 6, 2012
Last I checked
There were three aspects to the game and Special Teams is one of them. Or do you not recall how important special teams were against the Raiders? It’s a good move. You don’t have to be contrarian about everything
Steve_in_RI - January 6, 2012
but that would go against his nature
:-)
Eastcoastransplant - January 6, 2012
I kinda agree HIV
Except with Succop. He does matter, if we block correctly, he’s an excellent kicker which can make all the difference.
Flowers24 - January 6, 2012
I like him too, still it seems like a lower priority
HIV 2 Elway - January 6, 2012
right, since kicker is such a low priority. go ask the pats how much they wish they had kept viniateri....heck, even if they are glad hes gone and ike gotskowski....
the kicks he made, FAR outweigh and damage asante samuel or ellis hobbs were doing at the time
SDChief - January 6, 2012
ILB matters too.
One or both of these guys could end up offering more than Jovan Belcher at the position. I love that we’re locking those guys up for the future.
I’d love to hear about Carr and/or Bowe signing even more, but those contracts will obviously take longer.
bamachief5558 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Hey now...
remember, those guys are responsible for most of our points.
12t - January 6, 2012
Carr will be a chief
Wouldnt supprise me if chiefs stick a franchise tag on car
denmaster - January 6, 2012
i hope u are right
but with pioli nobody knows
MizzouChief - January 6, 2012
I dont remember for sure
but did Pioli slap that tag on Asante Samuel before shipping him to Philly? Or was he just a free agent and Pioli didn’t want to overspend on him?
kc_radrh8r - January 6, 2012
he was a free agent
saints_chiefsfan1979 - January 6, 2012
If we use the franchise tag
it will be Bowe.
bamachief5558 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Bowe, Carr, and McClain, GET IT DONE!
Fozzyboyd - January 6, 2012
Good news
I like Greenwood a lot. Great special teams guy.
bh13 - January 6, 2012
What are the Franchise tag options?
I’ve got a feeling we sign Carr and tag Bowe, isn’t there several options of franchise tags.
CPT.Caveman - January 6, 2012
tag one of them, one tag, one has to be signed or else we lose them and get a comp pick next year
SDChief - January 6, 2012
I think they'll sign Bowe
and possibly tag Carr
stagdsp - January 6, 2012
I think that's probably the more expensive way to go.
Brsrkr - January 6, 2012
yep
stagdsp - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Yes but isn't there a unrestricted and a restricted Franchise Tag.
CPT.Caveman - January 6, 2012
only one tag, can be exclusive or non exclusive
I think
stagdsp - January 6, 2012
OK that's what I meant, I wasn't sure what it was called.
What’s the difference, is it asking price or the ability too match the offer, Im not sure how it works.
CPT.Caveman - January 6, 2012
Non-exclusive tags
allow the player to negotiate with other teams. If they agree to sign with another team, their original team can match the offer to keep them or receive 2 first-round picks from the new team.
Exclusive tags don’t allow the player to negotiate with other teams.
Chiefs4Life - January 6, 2012
Ok got it thanks.
CPT.Caveman - January 6, 2012
Didn't get to see him play much on D this year
But I remember this guy having a great motor. I think it says something about his development that his first two years were both played under one year contracts and now he’s earned a four-year extension. They must see something they like. Plus, it’s a four-year deal for next to nothing (by NFL standards).
