The weekend is finally here AP readers and I hope this evening is finding you well. This is your Friday Night Open Thread.
The usual conversation starter applies tonight: What was your biggest victory of the week?
Mine was an easy one - Booking a flight to Kansas City next week to hang with Joel and everyone else. What was your victory of the week?

They're talking to him this weekend.
He must really suck, if Hoodie wants him back.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Is it official
I thought it was just rumors.
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
Just curious
Who do you propose we get as OC then? McDaniels was clearly the best option available.

you and I's definitions of "clearly" and "best" must be vastly different
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
Who do you prefer?
I am legitimately interested. I can understand not wanting McDaniels as HC, but why not as OC?
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
because that could lead to him being next coach
averagegatsby - January 6, 2012
If he does a great job as OC
I’ll take my chances.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
because Ive seen what he's done with both Denver and St. Louis' offenses....
namely.. nothing.
The Patriots and Tom Brady made McDaniels look good. Not the other way around.
He’s failed consistently in every NFL endeavor since leaving the Pats — Head coaching, personel decisions, player relationships, AND running offenses.
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
The list of people I'd take over Josh McFuck-Up is very very long.
Tom Moore, Norv Turner, Todd Haley, Cam Cameron, Mike Heimerdinger, Hue Jackson, Bruck Arians, Scott Linehan, Brian Bilick, Joe Phblin…. and that’s just off the top of my head.
It doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the people I’d take over Josh McDaniels.
Yes, some of those names aren’t available in any way.. here’s another one.. Peyton Manning (as a coach only)…
McDaniels is nothing without Tom Brady throwing it to Randy Moss… or Tom Brady throwing it to Wes Welker… or Tom Brady throwing it to my older sister. He’s not the even clearly the best man for the job Kansas State’s OC, yet alone the Chiefs. – Just my opinion. Obviously we disagree. But, judging from the fact that 1/2 the commenters on AP disagree with your statement.. I’d hardly say it was ‘obvious’ that he’s the best man for the job.
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
Todd Haley?
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Yeah, Todd Haley
He’s this good offensive coordinator that got promoted to head coach somewhere and took a 4-12 team to a division championship in 2 years.
He never could find the right guy to be his offensive coordinator, and kept changing the play caller to try and find the coach that would closely match his style.
He knew exactly what he wanted to do from a game scheme form, and did a great job teaching wide receivers and getting the absolute best out of his personnel.. even where others had failed to do the same. He’s a disciplinarian, and was able to whip a fat lazy team into physical shape to play on the biggest stage in football.
It’s really too bad that he lost some great players to injury in his last year as the head coach. And it was a real shame that he never stepped up and ENDED the confusion in the play calling by just dumping his offensive line coach turned play caller and QB coach turned intermediary. If he’d have just stepped up and taken the reigns as the HC/OC things could have worked out so much better.
He wasn’t ready for his role as HC (and how many are in their first stint as an NFL HC?) , but he very good OC with a Superbowl berth on his resume.
I’d take him over Josh McDaniels as an OC in a second.
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
What has he done to make you think he's a good OC?
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
a hell of a lot more than McHoodie
He actually coaches players…
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
Wow, I'm convinced now!
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
My goal was not to convince you
I believe I already answered your question in the post you replied to.
Coaching players, taking a team to the super bowl. Developing receivers, Getting a team into shape and ready to play that was woefully bad. Turning a program around from bottom of feeder to playoffs.
THat’s enough for me to rank him ahead of McDaniels simply not fucking up the Patriots while he was there. If it’s not enough for you… so be it. To each his own
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
The Patriots set offensive records with McHoodie.
They didn’t do that under Weis. He was far from just a caretaker.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
they set records with Tom Brady and a newly acquired Randy Moss
Josh was just a caretaker.
Texas Chief - January 7, 2012
I didnt say he was my first choice or anything. Just that Id take him before Josh the Man Boy
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
I really don't get the un-original changing of names.

Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
If he is good enough for the Patriots, why isn't he good enough for the Chiefs?
Just curious. I will side with Belichick on this one.
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
Well, they don't know him like we do.
Oh wait.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Developing offense and players vs. calling plays for an already elite offense
Yeah, my wife could call plays for New England and be successful.

Why would Belichick want McDaniels back?

ArrowSpread - January 6, 2012
I'm sure that's more important to him than winning.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Belichick isn't Charlie Sheen
averagegatsby - January 6, 2012
Put it together
They run the same offense they did when he was there originally. There would be no learning curve of new responsibilities or system. Pretty easy transition with losing your current OC
RememberDelaney37 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
I thought you said anybody could do it.
Why would they need to worry about an easy transition?
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Anybody could
But as Belicheck, if you don’t have to worry about developing a newly promoted coordinator, or bringing in someone new that has to learn the terminology (remember “it takes three years to master this offense”), then Belicheck can focus on that bad defense and turn over the offense to well-versed hands
RememberDelaney37 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, I'm sure that's it.
He couldn’t just promote one of their other offensive coaches, who know the current offense even better than McHoodie.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012

What was so elite about Troy Brown, Reche Caldwell (fucking who?) and Kevin Faulk?
That’s what he had to work with in 2006. Oh, and Tom Terrific.
ArrowSpread - January 6, 2012
The Patriots weren't an elite offense under Weis.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Ok?
They were only “Super Bowl winning” under Weis.
Brady has been and will continue to be that offense, and as long as he has been Tom Terrific, that offense can be considered “elite”.
RememberDelaney37 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Considering how quickly Belichick does away with excess fat...
The fact that he’s even being considered says something.
ArrowSpread - January 6, 2012
So they were the same offense under Weis as McHoodie?
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Scheme? Yes. Personnel? Night and day.
I can understand believing they are different considering the offensive results, but you must take into account the development of Brady in 5 years, as well as Moss and Welker.
RememberDelaney37 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
You are giving up pretty early on a young coach
You learn from your mistakes. And the things he did with that NE offense were extraordinary.
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
Shhh!!!
You’re using LOGIC! Don’t you know that doesn’t fly around here? Only emotional reactions are the way to go!
TimInKC - January 6, 2012
he had Tom Brady ...
the guy has RUINED the Rams, and the Broncos before that
upamtn - January 6, 2012
the rams had some tough injuries this season
and its not like their WR depth chart was amazing to begin with. not sure anyone would’ve done anything with them this season.
BeauJackson - January 6, 2012
so what?
we had injuries with thinner depth
Giants had injuries
Texans had injuries
the man ruined the Rams this season … had a long discussion with one of our bloggers (ept_stl) who lives in Rams country and had to watch the atrocities unfold
McHoodie is the LAST guy I want near the Chiefs
upamtn - January 6, 2012
Says the guy who thinks Muir deserves another year.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
compared to McDaniels ... Muir deserves a lifetime contract
upamtn - January 6, 2012
Your credibility is sinking faster than the Hindenburg
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
injuries with thinner depth?
what depth do the rams have?
BeauJackson - January 6, 2012
Not saying I want McDaniels
But I wouldn’t compare their injuries with ours. We have 8 guys on IR, 3 of which were basically backups (Miller, O’Callaghan, Siler).
The rams had 16 guys on IR. I don’t know them well enough to say how many were straters, but still. That’s a lot of injuries for a team that’s honestly not in much better shape than we are.
bh13 - January 6, 2012
Siler might have started for us ...
and we had a few others out as well: Moeaki, Berry and that Charles fella … hmmm, any of them starters? I don’t recall …
all I can tell you is that ept_stl watched a lot of Rams football and did NOT like what he was seeing from standpoint of schemes, plays called and unbending rigidity from McHoodie, including what he called “misuse of player talent” (vis-a-vis scheme, etc)
upamtn - January 6, 2012
Be honest.
If he liked McHoodie, would your opinion be any different?
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Fair enough
Personally, I wouldn’t be crazy about McDaniels being hired, but like Haley, I’d be willing to wait and see what he did for us before turning on him if necessary.
bh13 - January 6, 2012
I'd argue Spags ruined the Rams more
Being HC and all.
They also have 16 players on IR, including 3 O-linemen, 3 WR’s and a TE.
bh13 - January 6, 2012
Yes, extridonary
Josh to Brady: What we need to do is design some ways to get the ball to that guy… Moss.
Brady to Josh: OK, so you’re saying I should throw it to the biggest, fastest, tallest, strongest, highest jumping receiver on the team, that we just added to the team last week… that has already proven he can set the NFL record for touchdown catches in the season with another team? I shouldn’t just dump it off underneath all the time?
Josh to Brady: Exactly, You’ve got to change you way of thinking. It’s time to step up your game Brady. Up until now you’ve been a bottom 5 QB in the NFL. I need to see more out of you. You’ve been in the offensive scheme for longer than I have, and sit down with the head coach drawing up plays you think will work against certain defenses. I can’t have you going over my head like that. We’re gonna throw it deep to Moss whenever we can, and underneath to Welker if the defense covers Moss. It’s a BRILLIANT PLAN that you’d have never come up with on your own.
Brady to Josh: YOU’RE and offensive GENIUS! I’m gonna go out on the field now to play. You just keep calling in all those plays through the head set!
Brady to Belichick: Where’d you find this fuckin’ guy coach? If you want me to keep playing QB for your team then you’ll do me a favor. Mute that asshole’s microphone so I don’t have to listen to him. I’ll change the plays at the line to whatever I want. Just like I’ve been doing for years.
Belichick to Brady: You got Tom. Consider it done. Sorry about making him OC man. He promised to to go to the media to explain exactly how all that filming of signals stuff he was doing the last few years works If I made him coordinator.
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
To play devil's advocate a bit
Orton under McDaniels: 60.5% completion percentage, 7455 yards, 41 TDs, 21 INTs, his best two seasons as a pro.
bh13 - January 6, 2012
Yeah, that's definitely all that offense was.
Gimme a break.
MP-17 - January 6, 2012
obviously it was sarcastic.. or maybe it wasn't obvious /shrug
the point remains.
NE had all the pieces on the team to be a record setting offense.
They also had a QB that can all but run the system himself.
All Josh accomplished was to NOT fuck it up.
And he hasn’t even accomplished that much in Denver or St Louis since then.
Texas Chief - January 6, 2012
So you choose to ignore all of McDaniels' successes and focus on the failures
I don’t much see the point of this debate then, because in your reality McDaniels has only coached in Denver and St. Louis.
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
All of his successes?
All one of them?
When that ONE included a team that already had 3 superbowl rings and one of the (if not the) best QB’s in the league… an already built incredible offense, a scheme that was there long before McDaniels arrived, and a newly acquired Randy Moss that the team didn’t have before.
McDaniels was the beneficiary of Tom Brady, Wes Welker, and Randy Moss. He had little to do with the record setting…. his stints in Denver and St Louis are evidence of that fact.
You choose to ignore the other 2 teams, and only focus on the one that was entirely built before McDaniels got the job.
Texas Chief - January 7, 2012
wow. umm...
how ‘bout anyone qualified who isn’t McDouche
Buck'O - January 6, 2012
You vote to retain Bill Muir then

Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
He said, "qualified".
CMatthews - January 6, 2012
He does have a year of experience now.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Knew that was coming, you could make an argument that Muir was qualified
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
You could also laugh hysterically at that argument
RememberDelaney37 - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Especially if you're not a Chiefs fan.
He hasn’t given us much reason to laugh.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Point being -- "qualified" is pretty subjective when it comes to this sort of thing
Experience + success = qualified?
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
Nick, by your standards ...
Muir and Chiefs won 7 games
McHoodie and Rams won what … 2?
ergo, Muir must be WAY better
upamtn - January 6, 2012
By my standards, neither was successful this year
Both have been successful elsewhere.
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
Trent Dilfer for starting QB! he was successful elsewhere!
Texas Chief - January 7, 2012
Haley
trentchiefsfan - January 6, 2012
Best Option? Nick ... that's disgusting
upamtn - January 6, 2012
I've asked for better available alternatives
Norv Turner isn’t available. Todd Haley isn’t coming back to KC. Tom Moore isn’t coming here. Dick Vermeil isn’t coming out of retirement.
What many are forgetting is that we were in the OC sweepstakes last year and had high hopes for another high-profile signing and we got….Bill Muir. In all likelihood, this isn’t much of an attractive job and McDaniels seems like the best available/most realistic marriage.
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012
I'm curious about Mike Mularky personally
If it’s true that we’re interested.

How much of this interest is mutual?
Nick Britt - January 6, 2012

It’s likely he didn’t want a strong OC, whereas RAC (presumably) does.

Forget championships and focus on coaches who get the most out of what they have, Bill Snyder is a Top 10 college football coach all-time. If he ever had the luxuries that some of the huge programs have he would be an obvious choice.

niageriannit1 - January 6, 2012

ArrowSpread - January 6, 2012
I still can't believe we let go of him.
At this point I firmly believe that we are a good QB away from not only being Super Bowl contenders, but Super Bowl favorites. Why would you want to mess that up by creating some possible instability by firing your coach?
If I were somebody looking for their first head coaching job, KC would be my #1 option. Because of the injuries, any coach will look like a genius once we get those players back. When we have double digit wins next year, everybody will say “Wow, look at coach X! he took a losing team to the playoffs in his first year.”
Pioli’s #1 priority in this search should be keeping Crennel, preferably as a DC, but make him the head coach if you think he’d leave otherwise. Our defense is amazing under him, and I don’t want that to change.
wustl_chiefs_fan - January 6, 2012
That's exactly why he was let go.
The Chiefs were horrible underachievers under him, at least this year. 5 losses of 27 or more points.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
But not because of him.
Our injuries weren’t small. Charles is the most important non-QB offensive player in the NFL, and without him our offense is severely hurt. Without Moeaki, Charles, and Berry, I thought we’d be a 4 win team, and feared that we might not even get there. When Haley was fired, we had already won 5 games, even though we had played Palko several games.
I don’t think it was the wins and losses that got Haley fired. I think he must have had a lot of conflict with Pioli. That’s the only reason I can see for firing him.
wustl_chiefs_fan - January 6, 2012
mallet...
anyone think pioli tries to take mallet from the pats?
falon36 - January 6, 2012 via Android app
No.
Tarkus - January 6, 2012
Personally
I’m tired of getting someone else’s stuff. Since there’s only a pair of QBs that are worth drafting to start I think we should get as many picks as we can this draft, fill the holes we have and get thed depth we need and get the QB next year.
His Royal Greatness - January 6, 2012 via mobile
Romeo
I have to say I do not like any of the interviews
That we have done so far. I’m not high on fisher do not want McDaniels the OC of greenbay dosent Evan call there plays and now mike murlarky? Seriously that list sucks! Romeo is bar far the best pick out of them and probably any other people they bring in. He has the team behind him and they love playing for him, with Romeo we will not start over from scratch he’s been here and IMO has the best idea of what we need to do as a team to get better. He is blunt and calls it like it is! Something I think is great for our team! I have thought about it for a while now and can’t think of one person that would be a better candidate. That isn’t already coaching for another team. I think we need to hire Romeo ASAP so he can get his coaching staff in place. Our only problem is finding a OC. That is why we need to hire Romeo now! What do u guys think?
albuquerquechiefsfan - January 6, 2012 via mobile
I may be in the Minority
But after watching the Cotton Bowl, I really wouldn’t mind taking late round fliers on Tysyn Hartmann and Joe Adams in the draft. That punt return really made me think. I loved how instinctive he looked but hated it at the same time because I’m am a K State fan. What do you think? Hartmann as a backup safety/special teamer, and Adams as a PR.

DanielH123 - January 7, 2012
Welp!
It does appear that the Pats have McDaniels! Like him or not, he does take Lloyd with him to New England THUS ensuring that they are still deep at WR! IF we lose Bowe this off season, that means that Romeo(or door number 2) goes into next year withOUT a legit #1 WR! If we go into next year withOUT Carr then we don’t have a starting CB! SO, Pioli BETTER get his ass in gear! I am tired of his “building through the draft crap!” He went sleep walking through the draft last year ASSUMING that we had enough players. Losing Bowe and Carr is already a NEGATIVE TWO if it happens going into next year. Haley may or may not have been a good decision for us BUT if he was given better tools last off season then MAYBE we win a couple of those close games! Will Romeo build up an offense? Unless the answer is YES on that question, we will be back here in a couple of years talking about who the next HC is as well as who the next GM is! Some of you have sold out completely defending Pioli. He has lost me and must earn respect back from me. I liked him when he came in BUT not anymore. Scott, it’s time for you to get it done OR get the hell out!
