As usual, the NFL coaching rumor mill is a cluster-you-know-what and we're seeing contradictory reports.
On Thursday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported via a "well-placed league source" that the
Chiefs have reached out to the
Rams seeking permission to speak with Josh McDaniels.
Also on Thursday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the Chiefs have not reached out to the Rams seeking permission to speak with Josh McDaniels.
Wait, what?

Exactly.
Some Post-Dispatch-on-Post-Dispatch crime here.
More importantly to us, the KC Star's Adam Teicher is reporting the
Chiefs have not made a move to talk with McDaniels so it sounds like that's the accurate take. The Star's Sam Mellinger previously reported McDaniels would
not be interviewed for the head coaching job in KC (but potentially could for offensive coordinator). The current signs point to McDaniels landing in New England but we shall see.
No Fischer. No Del Rio. No Mcdaniels
All signs point to Romeo. Lets do it

Name a better option
Yes, system matters.
Nick Britt - January 7, 2012
Considering the strengths of our team
Any OC that accentuates the run to set up the pass, which is definitely NOT Mcdaniels. No doubt system matters, and Mcdaniels doesn’t fit this system at all, likely why the team hasn’t sought permission to talk with him.

The best teams pass to set up the run these days.
Just saying, it’s a modern philosophy, but it’s what is working right now in the NFL.

WorL4Chiefs - January 7, 2012
The best teams also have elite QBs, which is something we don't have
So until we have that, we have to utilize the strengths we have, which is JC and a decent run blocking o-line.
RememberDelaney37 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Just hope that JC returns as healthy as he was before the injury.
Mr.Pibbs - January 7, 2012
Not likely this next season, unfortunately
Especially for a RB that depends on explosive cuts and change of direction like he does. The “good” thing is how early the injury happened this season, so there is a good amount of time for recovery and rehab, but once the real practices and games begin again for him, it will take a while for him to get comfortable and confident on running and cutting like he did pre-injury.
RememberDelaney37 - January 7, 2012 via mobile

I'm SO glad you agree with me on this :-)
upamtn - January 7, 2012
And those teams have Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees
You cannot simply conjure up a QB like that. Otherwise, every team would have one.
MNchiefsfan - January 7, 2012
So true MN...which is why the best recipe is to create a good balanced team
um…“complimentary football”?…
and look for the best QB possible…
I think I’ve given up hope that the Chiefs will ever have an elite QB again…and hope now for solid balance and depth to create consistently a good team that has a chance for the big dance (Balt in 2000 anyone?)
WorL4Chiefs - January 7, 2012
I thought we had a chance at drafting one
When there were 3 in the draft. 2 is much more difficult.
MNchiefsfan - January 7, 2012
He runs the Erhardt-Perkins offense
Same as Weis and similar to what Haley does philosophically.
Haley was known for his passing offense before he got to KC. I think McDaniels would be able to adjust to his team’s strengths. In our case, it is the running game.
Nick Britt - January 7, 2012
McDaniels couldn't adjust his shoelaces in St Louis!
upamtn - January 7, 2012
How do we know if that was him or Spags?
Didn’t Haley mettle with our playcalls? I wonder if Spags did this with McD…
MountainManMike - January 7, 2012
Doubtful
Most of the problem was that they scrapped the entire offense entirely and had no time to work on the new offense because of the strike. Brandon Lloyd indicated that it was the same offense in St. Louis that they ran in Denver pretty much and there were no stories coming out that Spagnuolo was micromanaging.
Plus, part of the reason Haley meddled in KC was that he was an offensive coordinator and felt (stupidly) that he “knew” offense well enough to pull double duty. Spags was a defensive guy…it’s unlikely he micromanaged in an area that wasn’t his expertise.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
Hmmm,
Considering the strength of Denver was the zone-blocking, one-cut running offense that set up the pass in Denver, on top of the fact that he continued to call deep drops despite a bad o-line and seemed to refuse to run a work horse like Steven Jackson when needed most in St. Louis, its hard to imagine Mcdaniels adapting to anything here in KC.
RememberDelaney37 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Clarification
The strength of Denver was the zone-blocking, one cut ruining offense to set up the pass BEFORE mcdaniels got there.
RememberDelaney37 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
McDaniels and Adapt ... two words that never go in the same sentence
upamtn - January 7, 2012
Cassel looked pretty decent in NE with him as OC
Can’t credit Brady for that
joplin chiefs fan - January 7, 2012
Yup
And nobody was talking up Matt Cassel as a good fallback option before Brady went down. In fact, people thought it was pretty much the end of their season.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
Technically, it was. They didn't make the playoffs
Now that we have seen how mcdaniels utilizes a team’s strength in Denver and St. Louis, I think its safe to assume that Belicheck had more to do with altering the New England offense midseason in 2008 to better mask Cassel’s shortcomings than Mcdaniels did.
RememberDelaney37 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
They Went 11-5 And Were In Contention Throughout
QB was not the problem with their season.
And what is your gripe about McDaniels’ offense in Denver? He ran a pretty solid offense, actually. He got career best results out of Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal. He got good performance out of Kyle Orton. He spent one year on a shitty Rams team with no offseason to install his offense, a shit WR corps and an injured QB, and a line missing both tackles with no depth. Frankly, he’s shown that he’s pretty good as an OC, which is part of the reason Belichick wants him back.

Which would seem to be easier hires… or one would hope.
ravenhawk - January 7, 2012
just think ... if we had some beastly OLine and like some killer amazingly great QB and we re-sign Bowe and Moeaki is healthy, and Charles ...
… hell, who needs an OC?
upamtn - January 7, 2012
right
I think that’s the way it goes. Romeo HC and Zorn at OC. Hopefully Romeo promotes the DC from within and we can have some semblance of continuity going into next year. Let’s have a solid draft and nab a couple of good FA’s and continue building on what’s already there just like the last three years. It’s a good overall philosophy and I think it’s ultimately going to be the best approach. It ain’t sexy but who gives a shit if we get better.
Buck'O - January 7, 2012
Zorn
Considering how badly he ran an offense in Washington, I want nothing to do with him as an OC. And I really hope Maurice Carthon doesn’t get the job…he was Romeo’s OC in Cleveland and he was horrible.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
If the last three weeks were any indication
of how the O can run, I’d be ok with Zorn. Not saying it was great, but it improved. All things considered, it gave me hope with a group of players/QB and coaches that didn’t have much time or chemistry together. Like I said, not sexy but it could work. I agree there are arguments against promoting Zorn, but I’m not seeing any great alternatives out there.
I completely agree on Mo Carthon.
More than anything, I’d like to see some bigger beef added to the O-line and a schematic shift to more simplified power blocking.
Buck'O - January 7, 2012
Muir Ran Those Offenses
Not Zorn. Muir was the OC and the guy talking about the gameplanning…Zorn was still just the QB coach, and the QB position wasn’t so stellar that we should overlook his not impressive track record with offenses. There’s a reason that he has never been an OC in the NFL, and that the only team that let him run an offense stripped him of play calling responsibilities (even though he was head coach). He isn’t good.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
'fusayso
but I recall lots of talk about it being a triumvirate with Haley then Romeo and Muir and Zorn.
Buck'O - January 7, 2012
Technically, Any HC/OC/QB Coach Mix Is A Triumvirate
Doesn’t mean that all contributed equally.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
Look no further than Matt Cassel
(and so begins the next defense of the Cassel apologists)
Buck'O - January 7, 2012
That Zorn was even involved in the offensive game planning
speaks to the Chiefs valuing his knowledge and ability to coach. Muir is likely gone. Seems like a pretty natural fit. Maybe not the greatest prospect in the world, but it makes some sense. McDaniels made sense in his own way but that doesn’t necessarily make him the greatest option either.
Buck'O - January 7, 2012
I Boil It Down To "What Has He Achieved?"
Head coach/OC at Washington – disastrous results, got relieved of play calling duties.
QB coach at Baltimore – Joe Flacco was an average QB when he was there and is still an average QB since he left.
QB coach in KC – Matt Cassel and Kyle Orton, both average QBs (and that’s being generous with Cassel in 2011). Tyler Palko sucked balls, Ricky Stanzi was a non-factor.
Who cares if the coaching staff “values his input” when his input doesn’t produce results? That just means the coaching staff should find someone better to give input.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
Muir is set to retire.
No need to be content with Muir.
neiowakcfan - January 7, 2012

aFan4Life - January 7, 2012

Del Rio for DC
At Carolina, he led the team to the 2nd place D in the league. He was an ex-Chief and Jayhawk. We have to admit, when at Jacksonville, Del Rio wasn’t horrible until this year. The Jaguars were always in the playoff hunt, but were constantly just short. We could try to groom Del Rio into our next head coach under Romeo, he is still younger then most fired coaches out there, and can still learn. Seems like a Chiefs-like move if you ask me. The Chiefs have a thing with ex-head coaches.
super8 - January 7, 2012

Agreed
Especially the division bloggers. They give their opinion on what direction the team should go and what players they should target, and I think people run with it and claim its official reports that is in fact happening. Believe very little from them until it is officially announced by the parties involved

Totally agreed--most of the sports media does that, anymore, whether it's national or local.
Sports media = speculation. They’re barely more accurate than we are, for the most part.
Look, I can be Bill Williamson or Adam Tiecher:
“The Chiefs are only interviewing Jack Del Rio so they can get an insiders’ view of his defensive coordinator, Mel Tucker. Tucker—a former secondary coach and defensive coordinator under Romeo Crennel—is likely a consideration for Crennel’s defensive coordinator position and possibly, coach-in-waiting. No worries Chiefs fans, Jack Del Rio won’t be prowling the sidelines in KC any time soon.”
See? I can be sports media too.

I read on PFT that McD would be the first ex-coordinator that Hoodie Bill has brought back since coming to NE. Perhaps he feels that his “boy” needs image/coaching rehab…

Nick Britt - January 7, 2012

first, you’re comparing apples and oranges with KC and NE
secondly, looking at what’s happened in both Denver and St Louis with open eyes and a critically thinking mind, the only logical conclusion is that McDaniels is ruinous to the health of any team that doesn’t have Belichick and Brady
he misused that entire Rams offense all year long after all the damage he did in Denver … and you want to bring THAT kind of useless crap to KC?
child, please!
upamtn - January 7, 2012
I think you are just mad you drafted Steven Jackson in FF
Nick Britt - January 7, 2012
A Point About St. Louis
First, they lost both of their offensive tackles off of a thin o-line. Not McDaniels’ fault. Second, they lost their best receiver (Amendola) from an otherwise terrible receiving corps (their second-best WR, Danario Alexander, was chronically injured). They got Brandon Lloyd in Week 6, but by that point Bradford was dealing with injury issues. Not McDaniels’ fault. Third, and most important, they completely scrapped the previous year’s system and had no time to work on McDaniels’ system because they had no offseason. If you’ll look around the league, other teams that made dramatic changes to their lineups (Seattle, Dallas) also struggled with new offensive schemes and/or integrating new players with the shortened offseason.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
Actually, That Was Three Points
But I think it also says something when Sam Bradford, who struggled this year, still says that he prefers McDaniels’ system to the WCO he ran the year before. And that Brandon Lloyd (correctly) credits McDaniels as being the only coach who has ever understood how to use him.
I get that a lot of people here really hate Josh McDaniels. What I don’t get is how people can willfully ignore that apart from last season he’s actually done a very good job running offenses.
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
and they run seven plays inside the ten
with Steven Jackson standing on the sidelines. Definitely McDaniel’s fault.

Which has been known to happen to him frequently.
I don’t know the game you’re talking about, so I can’t really argue it.

I remember the game, Jackson was not hurt
They tried throwing it, a QB sneak, and handing the ball off to someone else for 6 of the 8 plays from the 1 yard line and could not make it into the endzone, the 7th was a direct snap for no gain, the 8th play they handed it off to Jackson and he ran right through the Dline for an easy TD
Direct snap to S.Jackson. S.Jackson left guard to SEA 1 for no gain
S.Bradford pass incomplete short right [A.Bigby]. PENALTY on SL-S.Bradford, Intentional Grounding
C.Williams left guard to SEA 1 for no gain
S.Bradford up the middle to SEA 1 for no gain

I dislike him as much as you do, Ups. But to defame McD's offenses in Denver is incorrect.
He did things with Kyle Orton that no one else had done previously. Ever, in fact. Same with Brandon Lloyd…Jabar Gaffney (in NE)…Cassel (in NE)…
Guy is a class-A prick and maybe thought he knew it all this year in St. Louis, but it isn’t his fault that his offensive line and receivers went to hell with injuries.
I have been educated by Lamb and Donk fans on this one (unfortunately).

go_saleaumua - January 7, 2012
No, we like talented asshole coaches too, we play the same game.
Belichick just has the structure in place to ensure McDaniels sticks to drawing up plays in the dirt and works on the other aspects of coaching (not saying too much in interviews, for example).
Us, on the other hand? I think McDaniels would/could be more of a loose cannon here. Now, he did work with RAC’s secondary in 2001, and coached offense on the same staff for three seasons after that, so while there may be some mutual respect RAC isn’t McDaniels’ mentor. Hoodie Bill is.
Also, working with Brady is a great way to build/burnish a reputation (see: McDaniels, 2002-2009, Bill O’Brien, 2009-2011).
We’re not doing it wrong, we just don’t have the winning pieces.
