ESPN's flurry of news on NFL Countdown included a Josh McDaniels update -- he's headed to New England. Adam Schefter reports McDaniels is expected to join the Patriots -- like, immediately -- and will be the offensive coordinator in 2012.
This sort of affects the Chiefs because they were one of the teams reported to be interested in McDaniels. We never got the confirmation that they were and we likely never will now.
The Patriots make more sense for McDaniels than KC (if the Chiefs were ever an option, which is debatable). He joins an offense that's still one of the best in the league and is reunited with the quarterback who has made Bill Belichick assistants millions and millions of dollars.
The Pats offensive coordinator job is open, of course, with Bill O'Brien headed to Penn State.
Oh to be a fly on the wall in the Chiefs offices to hear what they think about this...

i doubt fans will be too disapointed
I’m fine with it… just glad Romeo is HC
stagdsp - January 7, 2012 via mobile
I kinda am
He’s made both of our QBs look better than they actually are in the past.
Oh well, with this I kinda hope it’s Zorn now. I hate the revolving door of coaches in the offense though.
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
Since he left NE...
he failed in Denver and he failed in STL….NE can have him
KCinAZ - January 7, 2012
I'm done with these arguments back & forth
We’ll know who’s right 5 years from now…
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
OK...ha!
KCinAZ - January 7, 2012
Seriously
It’s just become talking points now. It’s over. McD isn’t coming here, so let’s just stop debating him.
cheapham - January 7, 2012
NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!
BigRedChief - January 7, 2012
Damn those unis are fresh
HIV 2 Elway - January 7, 2012
Yeah, they really are
Joel Thorman - January 7, 2012
Which ones?
I see Mcdaniels sporting the poo-brown Broncos hat. Is there anything fresher than a steaming pile of turd brown unis with the pee-striped socks?
RememberDelaney37 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
I think the old style Pats
white uniforms really look sharp when they are that white and crisp.
G.L. - January 7, 2012
All unis look better when paired with white helmets
but I’m ready to see more squads in mirrored ones
HIV 2 Elway - January 7, 2012
Mirrored?
Is that something the Ducks do? Doesn’t seem that the NFL would allow helmets that can blind the opponent on a sunny day.
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
Ducks Rose Bowl caps
Get ready for more of them in college next year just like we saw the rise of the matte finished helmets the last few years
HIV 2 Elway - January 7, 2012
Love those OSU matte black helmets
Haven’t really noticed elsewhere…but I rarely watch college FB.
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
Missoura used them a few times
Uncle Phil debuts all the stuff in Eugene, the good stuff then gets filtered down to other Nike schools. With Nike getting the NFL contract I hope they take more chances in the future.
HIV 2 Elway - January 7, 2012
Phil Knight (shutters...)
The man responsible for destroying the human knee. The man who managed to ruin 6 million years of evolution in less than 40 years…but I digress. Hopefully they’ll make subtle but noticeable changes to the Unis…
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
Baylor rocked some matte green ones in thier bowl game... Not sure if i liked those.
BigRedChief - January 7, 2012
Goodbye, McDoffus we hardly knew ye!
Thank goodness.
G.L. - January 7, 2012
McDoofus above^
G.L. - January 7, 2012
Both work.
electriclight - January 7, 2012
Oh good
Now Mcdaniels can stake claim to the rise of Gronk as an elite player, just like he did with Brady, Moss, and Welker
RememberDelaney37 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Kind of hard to give him a fair shot when people here make up random negative thoughts about him
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
I don't make up random negative thoughts about him
All my thoughts are negative about him..
Bigcherokeechief - January 7, 2012
I don't have random negative thoughts about McDoofus
All my thoughts are negative about him.
Bigcherokeechief - January 7, 2012
If he had been hired in KC as HC
it is possible a lot of people would like a fair shot at him.
neiowakcfan - January 7, 2012
Yeah
Not like Orton had his best years with McDaniels or anything.
bh13 - January 7, 2012
Best offense ever with Brady, Moss, Welker, and Belichick.
Absolutely abysmal showing with the Rams this year. I’m not impressed with this guy at all. Glad he’s off the table.
bamachief5558 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
I'm curious what direction they go with this
With RAC as HC, they need a guy who he can basically hand the offense over to…
MNchiefsfan - January 7, 2012
Peyton Manning
:)
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
I'd be fine with that
MNchiefsfan - January 7, 2012
I was one of the few who really wanted McDaniels
But I knew that if he were hired there’s no way Peyton would come here (if available), so maybe this will work out best in the end. I’ll keep telling myself this anyway….
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
agree
niageriannit1 - January 7, 2012
Intriguing.
Doubtful, but intriguing nonetheless.
jhoward8780 - January 7, 2012
WE need somebody who can take this offense
and run with it. I hope someone competent is in the works.
G.L. - January 7, 2012
It really wouldn't surprise me, with the retention of RAC
If they promote entirely from within and we see Gibbs and Zorn as our coordinators.
MNchiefsfan - January 7, 2012
Zorn is ideal
I just don’t want another new system installed, again…
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
Win 3.1, Win 2005, Win 2008, Win 2000, Win XP, Vista, Win 7 ...
I know, I get tired of having to change systems, too
upamtn - January 7, 2012
Ha!
jmcgoblue - January 7, 2012
Win 8 should be released this year, Fall I believe..
Aren’t you excited?
Bigcherokeechief - January 7, 2012
somewhere windows 98 and Windows ME are crying
Chief-blinders-on - January 7, 2012
Im going to assume that is not actually the order you installed your systems in...
nateforchiefs - January 8, 2012
Which is exactly what McDaniels would have done...
install an entirely new system, never max protect, and completely ignore our running backs.
neiowakcfan - January 7, 2012
Jamaal Charles?
upamtn - January 7, 2012
Lol......Jamaal's the man!
G.L. - January 9, 2012
Dear Josh
if you need any help packing and moving, please don’t hesitate to call me … I truly just want to make sure that your move to New England is safe and complete, with the fervent hope that your stay there is a long one (or, really, anywhere other than Kansas City for the next several decades)
best of luck to you, Josh, and give our regards to Bill, Tom and the rest of the gang!
your friend,

you, sir, are my hero and guiding (electric) light :-)
upamtn - January 7, 2012
Except that poll is for the head coaching job...
Not offensive coordinator.
jsChiefs23 - January 7, 2012
KC has not been interviewing OC candidates.
electriclight - January 7, 2012
And that has anything to do with what I said how?
jsChiefs23 - January 7, 2012
You stated 91% of Chiefs fans don't want him here...
That’s as a head coach not necessarily as offensive coordinator. I know we haven’t been interviewing OC candidates because we don’t technically have a head coach.
jsChiefs23 - January 7, 2012
I'm kinda nervous
Shouldn’t Muir have been shown the door by now? Or did I miss it?
KCinIL - January 7, 2012
He talking of retiring
The Gentleman’s door I guess.
Bigcherokeechief - January 7, 2012
Sounds like
We want to replace him, but if can’t find any takers, we will bring him back.
Nick Britt - January 7, 2012
I'd imagine he'll get the door next week, at least as OC.
They’ll probably announce as much of RAC’s staff as they can at the same time they officially announce his hire as head coach.
Maybe they leave him coaching the line? If he doesn’t retire he ought to step back to his “big uglies.” The man has no business holding a headset in 2012.
go_saleaumua - January 7, 2012
Thank God
about Mcdaniels. His only skill is being Belichick’s puppet. Left to his own devices he is an agent of destruction and the leader of poor offenses and I would even rather have another year of Bill Muir than Josh Mcdaniels. Why we would want to get a guy who led the only offense worse than ours, with better pieces (a healthy Steven Jackson, a better backup QB than Tyler, and a starting QB who looked better than ours before Mcdaniels, not to mention mid season wideout help.)
Having him as an OC would have been a nightmare. If he had been hired as HC, I would have tried to lead a rebellion.
KHAZAD - January 7, 2012
I'm honestly not sure where I see us going with the coaching hires for OC and DC.
I could see one of the positions being filled by someone on the staff in a promotion. DC makes more sense here because that person could be tutored by Romeo as the HC.
I’m not sure how I feel about the possibility of Zorn being the OC. I can’t be worse than Muir, right? RIGHT? I think this would probably be best for developing continuity. Also, it’s time that NFL teams start grooming coaches just like they groom players.
Falcon58 - January 7, 2012
Nfl has been grooming coaches like players
For a long time now
ChiefWarPaint - January 7, 2012 via mobile
I hope he doesn't trade for Tebow.
I’m hoping Tebow has a long career in the AFC West.
electriclight - January 7, 2012
Have to wonder if Pioli backed down becaues the Patriots wanted him
Not that I wanted him on the team anyway, I think the guy is poison, but I do sometimes wonder if we are getting the Pats sloppy seconds.
Seems like sometimes guys that Pioli would be interested in he doesn’t pursue because the Patriots want them.
ChiefDJ - January 7, 2012
like Cassel and Vrabel?
… or do you mean like Moss?
upamtn - January 7, 2012
No, I mean
other players the Chiefs were rumored to be interested in until the report came out that the Patriots wanted them and then the Chiefs backed down.
Yesterday the Chiefs were reported to be requesting permission to talk to McDaniels, then later the Patriots did, now the Chiefs are not interested.
Bugs me that Pioli will always back down to his former team.
ChiefDJ - January 7, 2012
Which players?
I’ve never heard anything like that before
ChiefWarPaint - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, that's news to me too...not unbelieveable, mind you, but new info.
Got a source somewhere DJ? Just curious.
go_saleaumua - January 7, 2012
Crennel feels like the hire because there was no one better
The guy will be 65 when the season starts next year. Big reason why no one else was talking about hiring him.
Even if he’s succesful, he’s a dead end for the team after the next 2 or 3 years. Then we start all over.
ChiefDJ - January 7, 2012
that's what it means to be the best ... there is no one better
upamtn - January 7, 2012
Not necessarily
Also means a lack of other options and that does not make the team any better.
ChiefDJ - January 7, 2012
Don't get me wrong, if Crennel was 10 years younger, I'd be fine with this
But just seems like you’re temporarily renting a guy that everyone knows can’t be around very long instead of building something for the future.
ChiefDJ - January 7, 2012
The future is now.
electriclight - January 7, 2012
Not with Kyle Orton and Matt Cassel its not.
ChiefDJ - January 7, 2012
We will see.
electriclight - January 7, 2012
I'd expect that his DC or Ass't HC is the "coach in waiting" type.
Someone that RAC can groom…
-Todd Bowles?
-Mel Tucker?
-Gary Gibbs?
I don’t have any guesses on the offensive side, but I’m sure there are prospects there, too.
go_saleaumua - January 7, 2012
So if Houston and Denver win, Tebow plays against McHoodie?
electriclight - January 7, 2012
don't think so
I think O’Brien is the Pats OC until the end of the Patriot’s run, and McHoodie would not join them until next year.
The Steelers will make that point moot, anyway.
neiowakcfan - January 7, 2012
McDaniels is hired as an offensive assistant in new england
effective immediately meaning he will be with them in the playoffs and then be promoted to OC next season. Reported by adam schefter earlier today
Swilk15 - January 7, 2012
Really?
Bizarre.
neiowakcfan - January 7, 2012
Not really...
He’s held the role successfully with the Patriots before, and their OC is headed Penn State.
The only odd thing is seeing someone return to a team like that. But Ive also heard talk of Haley back to the Cardinals.
bamachief5558 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
I Doubt Haley To AZ Happens
Now that he’s started that whole “I want to be co-coordinator with Sparano” thing, I suspect that’s saying that there’s a lot less interest for him than we’ve been led to believe. In fact, I’m starting to think that it’s Haley spreading the AZ rumor.
Why would a notable control freak offer to share power in a bizarre arrangement if somebody is interested in hiring him on his own?
UCrawford - January 7, 2012
and people were worried
he would be the next HC. please..
be cee - January 7, 2012
Agreed.
Ridiculous.
How would this guy go from abysmal failure as a head coach to leading the worst offense in the league back to a head coaching gig. He’d have to be the luckiest idiot ever.
bamachief5558 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
to me it was just a matter of common sense.
pioli is on thin ice, so he hires mcdaniels? no way.
be cee - January 7, 2012
Zorn or Chris Palmer for OC
Bonofied - January 7, 2012
If Palmer would be willing to leave TN, that'd be awesome. But it'd be a lateral move, for one...
And two, he’s leaving behind two quarterbacks (one a proven winner and the other a top-sheld prospect) for two maybe’s and an unknown.
go_saleaumua - January 7, 2012
Yeah, I agree that it isn't likely but,
he and RAC go back a ways.
Bonofied - January 7, 2012
Awesome
Hell yeah take your Patriot Way back to New England
ChiefWarPaint - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Good for him and good for the Pats
The boy wasn’t ready to leave big daddy’s house. Big daddy said so himself. I’d much prefer him there than in KC where he’ll be under appropriate supervision.
Buck'O - January 7, 2012
*chuckle*
I rec this, because I approve this message.
go_saleaumua - January 7, 2012
Does anyone know if Philbin's contract...
is up in Greenbay. I got to think if he was granted play calling duties and a shot of succeeding Romeo he would take it. I don’t know if we can pull that lateral move. What about Tom Clements the QB coach from Greenbay? He is probably the best QB coach in the country, would bring Flynn along with him.
Crown Chief - January 7, 2012
No thanks to all the above
Nick Britt - January 7, 2012
Too bad they didn't get McD that would gave been ideal please go outside for OC and a bee ST coach
FrankPitts - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Ideal for who?
Not the Chiefs. Mcdaniels is an abject failure who just finished leading the worst offense in the NFL. He was outperformed by Bill freaking Muir in 2011, and HIS running back was healthy! The prevailing opinion on this blog is that Bradford > Cassel, and the Rams backups were > than Palko as well, so they were in a better position than we were.
Let him go back to being OC ( i.e. Belichicks gofer and personal puppet) at New England.
KHAZAD - January 7, 2012
Sorry cell phone suggestions hijacked me
FrankPitts - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Just shows how much of a genius Belichick is
He can retire when Brady retires and McD can be the new NE head coach and run them into the ground, so it will make ole Bill’s star shine even brighter.
BigRoz - January 7, 2012
