Marty Is One Of The Bucs Coaching Candidates

ESPN's Chris Mortensen just delivered an interesting nugget on NFL Countdown -- Marty Schottenheimer is among the candidates for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching job. He's not at the top of the list (I don't know why he isn't) but he's among the names the Bucs are considering.

Schottenheimer is 68 years old and just came off of a year coaching in the UFL. He last coached in the NFL in 2006 when he went 14-2 with the San Diego Chargers. He won an NFL coach of the year award as recently as 2004. Of course we remember him here in KC for his decade-long run with the Chiefs in the '90s.

The thing about Marty is you kinda know what you're going to get. He built a winner in Cleveland. He built a winner in Kansas City. He built a winner in San Diego. He will rebuild your team and get them in position to be playoff contenders.

Of course, the knock on him is that he hasn't won a Super Bowl. Mort reported that Marty is "hungry" to coach and I imagine the quest for a Super Bowl title is at least part of the equation.

As Mort points out, Marv Levy won went to a Super Bowl at age 68. Crazier things have happened.

Nice
When Was That!?!

Marv Levy retired as coach of the Buffalo Bills, and unless it happened in some alternate universe, they have never won the Super Bowel…lost it four time…but never won it. SO, what team did Marv Levy coach that ever won the Super Bowl?

nice catch, FF

true, Levy never won it, but his teams DID go to 4 in a row … a feat likely to never be matched

as for Marty, I really figured he was heading down Retirement Lane, but I can see him as a good option for the Bucs, they have the pieces in place for a good Defense already, and that’s the hallmark of a Martyball team

interesting, for sure

Mr Rodgers and the Raji Discount Doublecheck may want a word with you soon
ha! Rodgers is doing it wrong ...

Raji, he got the belt move DOWN

God, That Was Hilarious

I half wonder if Rodgers agreed to do those ads just so he could find a way to get out of doing his touchdown dance, which was apparently rubbing people the wrong way, or to make it less hostile. He turned it into a rather funny joke…and an endorsement. Very clever. :)

thanks

The part that really bugs me about those 4 Super Bowls was that he did that AFTER the Chiefs decided that he couldn’t coach!!! Ahhh…another chapter in Chiefs what might have been!

You're right

Corrected the mistake — went to a Super Bowl at 68, not won.

Why wasn’t Marty on our list? I realize he is aging but he is still productive and passionate. I’m happy with RAC but Martyball is still close to my heart.

He almost certainly wouldn't have lived up to expectations.

I think another run in KC would be set up for a huge disappointment, just because fans would be expecting so much.

Welcome first time poster

just because fans would be expecting so much.

Marty's "Not Interested" in the Chiefs job, but he's down with Tampa?

Is that an indictment of our front office? Lack of control? No QB?

Maybe he just likes the warmer weather? Who knows but Marty?
more like he rather not go down with the ship
The way things ended for him in KC

it would be silly for him to come back. It just wouldn’t be healthy. It’d be like getting divorced in your 40s and trying to rekindle a relationship with an old college girlfriend. It just wouldn’t end well.

Good way to put it.

It’s hard for me to visualize another run ending in anything but disappointment for both sides. A fresh start with a new team is probably best for him.

Maybe.

But he told Kent Babb about a month ago that he wasn’t looking for a job when asked about KC.

Maybe he wasn't.

People change their minds all the time. Maybe they came to him, and he thought he may as well explore the option.

I'm definitely reading more into this than there likely is.

But still, such a big part of KC’s history, and he was hanging around the team a bit this season. Seems like he would have been a bit interested. Who knows.

maybe he and Pioli are less than "BFF"

Marty has his way of doing things, Pioli’s way is different

just a thought

Marty has always gotten along with his GM.

/AJ Smith

oh yeah!

/forehead slap

I Think It's More What You Said Earlier, Tark

He had a good run in KC and is thought well of here. Why tarnish that by coming back and possibly not doing as well? Plus, I suspect that since the Jets are reportedly looking at getting rid of his son, Brian, Marty will be looking at bringing him aboard wherever he’s hired, and if Pioli wasn’t happy about Haley’s rather unobjective approach to the offense, I doubt he’d be okay with Marty’s tendency towards nepotism on the coaching staff.

I think that quote was taken way out of context.
exactly

But if I were the Bucs I would hire him in a heartbeat.

Tampa really is a perfect fit for him

A young team with promising talent like that? He could really do wonders with them. Even being old, I think the Bucs should make a serious run go at him as coach.

Taamp has a young team?

Who knew?

If only some announcers would have clued us in about how young that Tampa team

I feel really left in the dark.

No kidding!
hey, that Tampa team ... they're a pretty young team, aren't they?
Are they?

I have no idea.

That's the word on the street
Bucs are also looking at Brad Childress and Wade Phillips

/smh

If Those Are The Options

It had better be Marty. Phillips has failed in three HC stints so far and his teams just get progressively worse the longer he’s there. Childress was so despised by his locker room that I don’t recall anyone being sad when he departed…and he never took a very talented Minnesota team anywhere.

Yeah.

I don’t get them even giving Phillips and Childress a look.

To Make Marty Look Better By Comparison?

Guess it’s lucky for Tampa that Norv Turner wasn’t available if they’re only looking through Retread City. :)

when the heck will wade accept that hes one heck of a dc and not a good hc
When GMs accept that fact.

Phillips is competitive. I don’t blame him for wanting to keep trying.

i do. i honestly do. ive been around guys who failed as head coaches, and honestly they understood their place
that said, i know its on the gm's....and the front office types who still see him as such
Wade Is Probably Not Giving Up On That

And to be fair, it’s not that he’s not decent at managing his staff or doesn’t know Xs and Os. He’s just too damned soft on his players.

Way I See It With Marty

His record during his last few years in the NFL indicates that he is still capable of winning a Super Bowl. Marty isn’t a coach who was struggling to achieve .500 his last few seasons, he was averaging over ten wins a season his last three years and was unjustifiably fired by a delusional GM.

For what Marty can achieve, I think it really depends on who his offensive coordinators is. If he goes with a good hire, like Cam Cameron when he waa in San Diego, then he has a good chance to get to the playoffs and do damage…their losses with him were more about luck than anything else when he had a good playcaller. If he goes with a Paul Hackett-type or hires his son (who was not doing a particularly good job in New York this year) I suspect they’ll probably be one-and-done in the playoffs at best and will probably never beat the Saints for the NFC South.

It’s would seem to be a great situation for Marty to fall into. It’s a young team with plenty of talent…that’s the kind of squad Marty works best with.

Besides

Marty is in the Chiefs HOF and probably would like nothing more than hammer the final nail in AJ Smith’s coffin. He would have 2 chances to get redemption. And us the division.

I Was Talking About The Bucs

That’s who he interviewed with. It doesn’t appear he was ever under consideration in KC.

i know.

Marty was always my 1st choice to be HC and i was trying to use this as a format to find him reasons to rejoin KC. I chose yours because of the similarities of both clubs (weather and taxation aside).

I Wouldn't Mind Having Him Back

But I don’t see it happening. Not too often that coaches go back to places they left in the pros.

DJ on ESPN talking about how to stop Tebow RIGHT NOW.

Arenas, too.

Score A Shitload Of Points?

That seems to be the best strategy so far…whenever that defense is less than stellar and can’t keep it close, Tebow is a liability. And from what they’re reporting he may get benched for Brady Quinn today.

Our 7 points argue that.

They discussed more about how to shut down the gaps, contain him in the pocket, and the kinds of man coverage to play with those receivers, because they’re so used to being wide open after a play action.

7 points worked just fine last week.

I love how they’re saying he’s struggled to play QB the last few weeks. Uh guys, he was struggling before that. They were winning in spite of his poor play.

And “he has to learn you have to do more than just protect the football.” Huh? He was 3rd in the NFL in fumbles before last week (in which he fumbled again, as well as threw a pick). I believe he’s turned the ball over in at least six straight games.

He's An Interesting Talent

But he can’t pass well enough to be a plus. If the guy was a league average passer, it would be scary what he could accomplish.

I think the aw shucks, super-religious thing is all an act. Tebow is selfish and an egomaniac.

I think you’re right, he is an interesting talent. If he were willing to do what was best to help the team win and not be so interested in his own agenda and playing quarterback they would be a lot better off.

From what I hear, he works harder than anyone else on the team

What more is he supposed to do?

He needs to say, "I'll play any position you need me to play in order to make the team better."

He could be a really amazing offensive weapon if he would bury the ego and let them play him at fullback or tight end. He could take snaps out of a wildcat formation. There’s a tremendous number of versatile things they could do with him. But he can’t throw and insists on playing QB. He wants to run a college offense in the NFL.

I Don't See Him As Fake At All

I don’t share or agree with some of his beliefs, but from all accounts he’s a likable enough guy and genuine. About the only thing I saw that indicates otherwise is that he kind of rubbed Orton the wrong way because the press kept interviewing him and he said he wanted to play, but that’s more an etiquette thing and he’s a 23 year old guy so he isn’t perfect at handling press.

I suspect a lot of animosity towards him is really misplaced animosity towards a lot of his fans who, quite frankly, are kind of annoying with their victim mentality (claiming the only reason people criticize Tebow is his religion) but that’s not really his fault. He himself doesn’t seem to do a lot to instigate or encourage that.

I read an article last week that there were some rifts on the Broncos team earlier in the year due to a billboard that was put up in Denver.

The billboard pretty much said “Bench Orton” and there was some friction on the team as Tebow didn’t do anything to try and mend the rift — that the other QBs fined him for his silence on the matter. He could have publicly said “I appreciate the support but take the thing down because it hurts the team.” But he didn’t. The billboard was helping to stoke anti-Orton sentiment in Denver and that helped Tebow’s cause so he kept his mouth shut.

Didn't Hear That Much About It

And his complaining about not getting the job in camp kind of irritated me. But then it’s also pro football and you have to expect some ego there. Tebow annoys me less than guys like Favre (threw teammates under the bus), Chris Chandler (undermined young QBs), Steve Young (whined about playing behind Montana) and Eli Manning and John Elway (blackmailed their way off of their original teams) did.

Basically

Pro quarterbacks are some of the most underrated prima donnas in the NFL. A lot of the great ones were just as petty, vindictive and immature as any player from any other position you can name…it gets overlooked, though, if they perform.

Hell, compare Tebow to a guy like Ben Roethlisberger or Michael Vick or Cam Newton or Vince Young and he comes off as a veritable prince of decorum and good manners.

That Said

I thought it was stupid to bench Orton for Tebow in Denver. But then I also suspect they only did it to shut up Tebow’s fans by showing them his shortcomings.

I totally agree

I hope he’s never able to develop into anything better than “awful” as a passer

Works For Me

One Elway was enough, thanks.

to be fair his first few games tebow was protecting the ball

wasnt throwing int’s and fumbling much

but now hes a fumble machine, as the awesome kendrick lewis play showed. and hes starting to throw int’s as well with 4 that previous week.

the stat that hurts him is the 4th lowest qb comp percentage, the other 3 being akilli smith, ryan leaf and heath shuler

just glad to turn it on and hear werder say that the loss vs kc is still eating at elway
And that Tebow wasn't happy with the coaching staff this week.

Apparently some things were said, and Tebow wouldn’t elaborate. Keep falling apart, Denver.

Did they tell him he needs to complete more than 48% of his passes?

They’ve already changed their offense to accommodate him, but I guess that’s not enough.

They probably reminded him that he wasn't a real QB.
Don't they realize?

He’s just not a good practice QB. He’s great in the games.

“All he does is just win.”™

Except when he loses.
He loses?

Huh. Who knew?

Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali.

=)

I loved Deadspin's headline after one of Denver's OT wins this season

“Tim Tebow Tebows a 60 yard Tebow to send the game into Tebowtime.”

yeah, they should at least hide that they plan to attempt to trade tebow in the offseason
It's worth saying...

That picture of Marty is classic. Can’t tell if he’s celebrating or having a conniption. I think the line between the two was always quite blurry when it came to him.

It's a conniption.
Unfortunately

we are at TB next year.. Otherwise that would be insane at home.. Hope he gets it…

That would be a fun game at Arrowhead.
aww thanks for checking that, would have been pretty neat
Didn't Marty coach the Redskins after the Chargers?

and they really sucked!!!

No.

He coached them before the Chargers, and they won their last 8 games as I recall. He was let go so Snyder could hire the ole ball coach.

I think you can argue that year was one of Marty's best coaching jobs.

They started 0-5 and nearly made the playoffs. If memory serves they lost a game on a fluke/trick play that kept them out of the playoffs. They had a bunch of overpaid, over the hill players (Snyder is nothing if not the world’s worst fantasy football player) like Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders who resented how hard Marty made them work.

Deion Said He'd Never Play For Marty

As I recall, Snyder thought that might cost them Sanders, so he choose Deion over Marty…which was stupid because Sanders didn’t stick around anyway.

I thought we might see Marty as DC in Jacksonville if Brian gets the HC job there.
That Would Be Interesting

But judging from how Brian Schottenheimer did in New York this year, I wouldn’t think he’d be all that attractive as a HC candidate.

I'd blame Rex Ryan for most of the Jets problems this year.

These loudmouth coaches (Ryan reminds me of Jerry Glanville) have a really short shelf life and I think the implosion has begun. He’ll be fired by the Jets this year.

Possibly

If he doesn’t win the division and/or doesn’t make the AFC Championship Game, I think they’ll go elsewhere.

That’s a good comparison to Glanville. I think he’s better than Glanville, but when you make bold predictions and don’t live up to them, you’re on the way out sooner rather than later.

Other news

Irsay says he will never trade Peyton.

free him then..........
Because he can't?

He could release him, though.

He could always trade em

He’s not gonna be the guy that cut the greatest QB of our time. He’ll play next year, draft Luck let em learn from the best, and be on their way once again.

That was a pretty awesome 4th and short play call.

Lots of shifting, even switched centers in the middle of the count. Great D by the Giants to stuff it, though.

That should be intentional grounding in the endzone.
And a good call.

Why did that not show up on my AP front page? Weird.
I don't know.

I usually use the RSS feed, and that’s where I saw it. Maybe that’s why there’s not much activity there.

It's in the "Recent Stories" sidebar.

But if you’re refreshing the front page, waiting for the open thread, you’re not going to find it.

OL is god awful right now
Think a HC announcement will come tomorrow?

I predict Tuesday it becomes official.

Wouldn't surprise me

Marty has a knack for taking over shitty teams and making them relevant again (e.g. Browns/Chiefs/Chargers)
