The Kansas City Chiefs are about to make it official: Romeo Crennel is the new head coach.
We're told the Chiefs have a press conference scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) today and at that press conference they are expected to name Crennel the full-time head coach.
The Chiefs haven't officially confirmed anything on Crennel's status yet but Adam Caplan cites Crennel's agent in reporting that the two sides have agreed to a three-year deal to make him the new head coach. Caplan has some quotes from Crennel's agent here.
So, in the end, it's Crennel, as we suspected for quite some time. The Chiefs were connected to a few candidates throughout the coaching search, including free agent coach Jeff Fisher and Green Bay Packers OC Joe Philbin, who were both interviewed for the job.
In just a few more hours, we'll have our head coach.

NJ Chiefs Fan - January 9, 2012
I approve.
G.L. - January 9, 2012
I’m happy with this move. I think it was the smart move.
KCTigerChief - January 9, 2012
Dear Scott
Now you have your HC. Please, find us a QB to lead us into the playoffs!
Full Metal Jayhawk - January 9, 2012 via mobile
You mean like Matt Cassel did last year?
or did you mean more “into” the playoffs, as in beyond the wildcard round?
cheapham - January 9, 2012
sorry
I just can’t buy into his game. If he succeeds in the next couple years, I’ll be glad to eat my words, but I don’t see that happening.
Full Metal Jayhawk - January 9, 2012 via mobile
No need to apologize
I just think it is worth noting that Cassel did take this team to the playoffs, which I feel pretty confident that he could do again. Now, whether he could do MORE than that…I’m not convinced either. He’s serviceable…but I’m not sure that serviceable is gonna cut it.
But, then Tebow goes and blows up everything…
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Healthy Skepticism Is Reasonable
I don’t think that you’re being unreasonable to want to see results before buying in.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
I agree, we need to find a QB better than Cassel
but who are we going to get? Orton? Anyone else??
Chiefs447 - January 9, 2012
As long as we keep looking for an upgrade most fans will be ok with it
May not be able to get a good prospect this year like Luck or RGIII, but hell even looking at Flynn would please most fans
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I'd throw away an entire draft for Luck.
It would probably take this whole draft plus next year’s 1st rounder, but I’d do it. I know it’s a lot but I would take the same exact team we had this year plus Luck, Charles, Berry, and Moeaki.
Chiefs447 - January 9, 2012
I wouldn't give that much
Not with as much depth as we need, possibly Bowe+swap firsts with the Rams+2nd next year is the most I would give up. That depends if we can get Bowe for a good price and he wants to be here.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I know we need the depth
but we could get some pieces in FA. Take this team we have now with Luck (plus getting our guys back would seem like a draft in itself) and run with it. We’d have our elite QB for the next 15 years. We would be contenders. Every. Single. Year.
Chiefs447 - January 9, 2012
IF he pans out
He has been overhyped to the moon thus far. He is a great prospect, but an instant elite/hof QB?… no
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Guess that's a risk I'm willing to take
Easier said than done though.
Chiefs447 - January 9, 2012
Good move
Anyone else wondering if they’ll make any other announcements at this press conference, along the lines of OC/DC? Or, do we expect them to drag that out?
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Manusky as DC?
Full Metal Jayhawk - January 9, 2012 via mobile
He makes some sense, that's for sure
But, I imagine he’ll end up going back to LBs for a bit first. If we promote Gibbs, perhaps Manusky comes in to be LB coach?
cheapham - January 9, 2012
I could live with that move for sure.
Full Metal Jayhawk - January 9, 2012 via mobile
It would be a pretty stacked defensive staff, that's for sure
cheapham - January 9, 2012
I can see us having a Niners-like resurgence next season
bad-ass D, clock control Offense, a stadium that opponents want no part of…
reedeasy - January 9, 2012
I'd love that.
Our lighter schedule next year should make that all the more achievable as well. If we can keep up the impressive D play, I’d gladly take a QB performance like Alex Smith’s from this season. Though, perhaps I should wait to see how it works in the playoffs…
cheapham - January 9, 2012
AFC North and NFC South aren't exactly light
The schedule looks even tougher next year.
HIV 2 Elway - January 9, 2012
But
we're playing a 4th place schedule. It must be easier, right?I wish people would understand that your finish in the division only effects 2 games in the schedule.
Chiefs447 - January 9, 2012
Plus Buffalo whipped us and we barely snuck by a Pey Pey-less Colts team
Next year’s schedule is no joke
HIV 2 Elway - January 9, 2012
Agreed
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
That is what they said about this year's schedule
Until we were destroyed by the predicted “weak” teams and beat some of the “strong” teams.
Speculating how strong or weak a schedule is before the season is pointless
RememberDelaney37 - January 9, 2012 via mobile
agreed
but the home/away split on our games makes the non-division schedule a little easier than it could have been.
But I hate the 4th place schedule myth as well.
Steve_in_RI - January 9, 2012
They're not light, for sure
but I do think next year’s schedule doesn’t look as daunting as this years did. I think having Crennel as the main gameplanner will make a world of difference in terms of our preparedness next year. We got caught with our pants down several times this year, and I just don’t see that happening with new leadership.
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Schedule was only 12th this year.
Or roughly middle of the pack.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
I pray against Manusky.
Chargers D was not too good this year.
skunk420 - January 9, 2012
Greg Manusky Poll
See what the rest of the community thinks about Manusky (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/1/5/2684844/greg-manusky-fired-as-dc-in-san-diego). I posted this poll as soon as news broke the Manusky was let go. There are a lot of interesting aspects to Manusky’s style of running a 3-4 defense and his aggressiveness against offenses. Likewise, user SillyHatDay noted that Manusky ran a 1 gap 3-4 defense in SF and SD whereas Crennel ran a 2 gap 3-4 defense. While there are interesting things to note about Manusky’s style and other DC’s styles, it would be nice to bring in someone who will not only keep our defense strong, but improve it as well. I don’t want to just maintain status quo.
More importantly, defensive minded coaches tend to be manage conservative style of offenses. I hope to God that if Crennel hold true to a conservative, offensive scheme that we at least have an OC that is creative and doesn’t allow us to go conservatively stale.
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
Moving to the 1 gap defense makes a lot of sense with how the NFL rules are now
Finding the 2 gap pluggers is getting harder and harder, especially NT, while unless you have an amazing athlete at DE like Seymour you generally will not gain much pressure out of the front 3 in a 2 gap system
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I doubt they drag it out...
I don’t see that being announced at this press conference, but they can’t afford to drag it out. They need to get the coaching staff together to start planning for draft, free agency, and next season. Waiting just hinders the ability to do that.
KCTigerChief - January 9, 2012
I kind of expect it to be dragged out
Playoffs still going on, and we really havn’t heard any OC names come up like we did with HCs
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I'm wondering if this will be the case as well.
I also wonder how much agency Crennel will have (or wants, for that matter) in constructing a coaching staff.
cheapham - January 9, 2012
lots of guys on Haley's staff are guys he worked with before.
I imagine Crennel will have a say.
reedeasy - January 9, 2012
Hi Romeo
Best of luck to you.
I believe.
SwimCoach - January 9, 2012
Only thing I dont like about Crennel being the HC
is that in 3 years he will probly retire and we will be looking for a new HC again
badassz1987 - January 9, 2012
Could easily be grooming the new HC in the process
Like it sounds like we have sorta been grooming a DC
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
That’s why we’ll probably be seeing a young OC.
JComp11 - January 9, 2012
I'm Betting He Won't Retire
He’ll either produce and get extended or get fired. I doubt he’d be a head coach if he thought he’d only last three years. Much easier to just stay a coordinator.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Agreed.
People are projecting, when they’re saying he’s about to retire. I don’t believe he has any intentions of retiring anytime soon.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Report Is A Three Year Deal
Since Haley got four years, I suspect this means that Pioli has got to start showing results by year two of this deal…otherwise the Chiefs can make changes to GM after 2013 and get a new head coach without having to can a guy too early in his contract. Good deal for the Chiefs.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
I really hope we do not have to go through this all over again
Romeo is nice because it keeps things similar and the ball keeps rolling, however if we have to clean house AGAIN.. shit will hit the fan
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Eh
If they have to hire a new GM in two years, I’ll be okay with it. Clark Hunt gave Pioli a reasonable amount of time to turn it around. I doubt we’ll be in as bad of shape as we were at the end with Herm and Carl. I think a new GM and head coach will have some decent pieces to work with and build on. Sometimes GM hires just don’t work out, but Pioli hasn’t been the worst GM here by a longshot.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
That's the thing, Pioli has not done a bad job thus far
If he is indeed getting replaced that means things fell apart, and likely looking at new GM/Coaches/schemes..
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
It's Not That He's Done A Bad Job
It’s more that I think he could have done better. So far I see him as kind of a middling GM. I’ve always seen those as guys you look to upgrade from eventually.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Is the team perfect? Nope
Could we fans have chosen different players in the draft, yup. Picked up more FAs? yup.
There is talent throughout this team, the work is not over with yet though.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
How many GMs are elite in their first three years on the job?
He’s young and inexperienced enough that I would expect him to continue to get better, just as his drafts have.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
He Was Already A GM
In New England. This wasn’t his first time dealing with drafting and scouting. And I kind of expect a guy to be on his game as soon as he’s hired at this level.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Was he the GM though?
I thought he was ‘’director of personnel’’
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I Thought GM
Dimitroff was player personnel before he went to Atlanta.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Either way it's basically the same thing
It’s not like the Chiefs and Pats are the same team, so of course it’s going to take different time
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
He was not.
He was part of the process, but he wasn’t in charge.
So you never expect anyone to improve? They should already be peaking at the time they’re hired “at this level”?
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Yes, I Expect Them To Be Peaking Early
Primarily because even the best GMs show within their first few years whether or not they have the chops to build a great team…and if in the first five years they don’t have a team looking like it’s on track to win a Super Bowl soon, they probably aren’t ever going to get there.
So far out of Pioli we’ve had one playoff season that was largely flukish, he’s already had to replace his head coach, and his personnel evaluations have been rather scattershot. I think it’s fair to say that if this team doesn’t show marked improvement in two years, we’re better off looking elsewhere for a GM.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
By Way Of Example
Bobby Beathard, Bill Polian, Al Davis, Tex Schramm, and Carl Peterson all had their best years at the beginning of their tenures. Within five years, they had established the level at which they were capable of performing. GMs also tend to get worse as time goes on, not because they suddenly get stupid, but because the NFL is an evolving league, other teams adopt or adjust to their strategies and the league passes them by.
The idea that a GM gets smarter as they go on is a myth. Same with head coaches, actually. Barring extremely unusual circumstances (e.g. Tom Landry’s start with Dallas) the level of performance a head coach or GM demonstrates in their first five years is going to be their high water mark.

Now Del Rio as DC and Carmichael as OC!! Sign Bowe to an Extension and lets get to FA and DraftCome on Pioli work "your magic"!
Jeremy Daniel - January 9, 2012
Does Del Rio run a 3-4?
I thought he was a 4-3 guy?
cheapham - January 9, 2012
He has run Both, But so does Crennel. At points he even had all DE's on the line this yr.
Jeremy Daniel - January 9, 2012
I'm sure he knows how to run a 3-4
Just b/c a coach in basketball likes to run zone defense doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to coach guys to play man to man.
SwimCoach - January 9, 2012
Where did he run a 3-4
skunk420 - January 9, 2012
JAC
They ran a base 4-3 with a 3-4 look sometimes.
KSU-Chief - January 9, 2012
Del Rio ran a 2 gap 4-3 defense
Not a 3-4 defense…plus I wouldn’t want him managing the whole defense. Maybe LBs or an assistant elsewhere, but not the entire defense!
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
They threw 3-4 looks in their defense as well
Just a few years ago they were doing it quite often
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
oh yeah.
And Romeo sometimes ran a 1-9-1.
I was talking base D. I shoulda made that more plain.
skunk420 - January 9, 2012
That man is easy to like
I’ll give him that.
I hope he gets some great lieutenants
JaySoy - January 9, 2012
Romeo, oh Romeo, where fore art thou Romeo
Is what we will be saying when we bring back Cassel and we see visions of his old Cleveland days.
When has Romeo had a QB that was worth a damn. Its not fair to keep bringing in HC and not give them the # 1 tool in a FRANCHISE QB. If Pioli is smart, and he wants to keep his job past this year and next, they will find a QBOTF somehow, someway.
With that being said, I am confident that Romeo will be a “servicable” coach until that time. LETS GO RAC CITY AND LETS GO CHIEFS!
Coady - January 9, 2012
*when we bring back cassel, and see visions of Romeo's old cleveland days
Coady - January 9, 2012
Who knows, maybe, just maybe Stanzi is our QBOTF and he leads us to the promise land.
Coady - January 9, 2012
What evidence have you seen of this?
ExRoyalsFan - January 9, 2012
What evidence have you seen to the contrary?
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
The fact they trusted palko over stanzi?
nateforchiefs - January 9, 2012 via mobile
"They" got fired.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Doesn't Mean That They Were Wrong About Stanzi
Fifth round pick? Yeah, I’ve got about as much faith in him being good as I do in winning the lottery.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Romeo also never had the caliber of D in CLE that he does now.
But I agree, we need a QB really bad.
Get a top tier QB and this team will be a legit contender. It would be awesome if Indy just cut Peyton loose…
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
"wherefore"
skunk420 - January 9, 2012
Crennel will choose...
Kyle Orton as his QB. He has no ties to Cassel. Poili has a chance to rid himself of Cassel by using Crennel as a vehicle. He looks good by pleasing his new head coach and, generally, most of the fanbase.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
Do we trade Cassel for a draft pick? Do we keep him on board as a Backup? Do we trade him for a player?
Does anyone other than Scott Pioli really want Matt Cassel?
Coady - January 9, 2012
Trading or keeping Cassel depends on Stanzi
If they feel he has improved enough to be a back up and possibly come in if there is an injury, we can attempt to move Cassel. If they do not feel good about Stanzi then we will likely have Cassel as a back up, cutting ties with Stanzi, and picking another late round QB
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Would they really want to eat all those dollars to keep Cassel at Backup?
Even if they dont see Stanzi as viable?
Coady - January 9, 2012
Cassel's contract is not that expensive anymore
We have seen how valuable a backup QB is, Orton is not a long term solution either
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
orton the best option right now until
peyton manning comes
niageriannit1 - January 9, 2012
Cassel's contract is now team friendly.
There’s no problem with keeping him as a backup. Which is what he is, and quite serviceable at it.
Eastcoastransplant - January 9, 2012
What is the actual dollar amount we would pay Matt this year to be on the sideline?
Coady - January 9, 2012
Someone, anyone?
Coady - January 9, 2012
5.25m in 2012
Eastcoastransplant - January 9, 2012
Well fineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
2012: $5.25 million
Per rotoworld
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
angelic smile
Eastcoastransplant - January 9, 2012
They trade Cassel.
The timing is right. Luck and Griffin (assuming he declares) are the only viable options for starting caliber rookie QB’s in the draft. There are a handful of teams that need a QB and could use a Matt Cassel.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
That's the thing..
Will the mid/low pick be as valuable as Cassel is as a back up? I think not, unless Stanzi could be the backup and not lose us games and we get a decent pick. Otherwise it’s just another step backwards
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
As much as I want our QBotF, (and I want him NOW!) I don't see that necessarily
happening in this draft. Not unless we somehow, magically, fates aligning (and without giving up the whole damn farm to get him), land on Luck or RGIII, then making sure we have a serviceable backup is clutch. No repeats of this year thank you.
Eastcoastransplant - January 9, 2012
Lets say 4th round pick
plus $5mil in cap room. I know we have a bunch but signing Orton will take a good amount and Carr and Bowe will require a large amount even if it is the FT for one of them. Around $10mil for the FT for one of those guys, plus Orton and around $11(signing bonus and base salary)….
We could have over $30mil in cap for those 3 guys alone this year.
KSU-Chief - January 9, 2012
If you get a 3rd or 4th rouner?
I would absolutely pull the trigger. If we could grab a Houston or a Tony Mo, or maybe use the pick in a draft day trade. It’s value that Pioli covets. If there’s one thing that im certain on about Pioli, it is that he loves draft picks.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
Yes a 3rd I would do it for
Could we get a 3rd? Doubting it
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I could see a team like the Seahawks
giving a third. Matt torched Seattle last year in front of his old college coach. They have a very respectable defense, great running game (Lynch is awesome, one of my favorite RB’s in the game), and are comparable to Arrowhead in crowd noise.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
3rd is pretty high
Only thing going for us would be the fact the draft is really weak as is the FA market.
Orton, Campbell, Flynn… That is pretty weak.
KSU-Chief - January 9, 2012
That's part of the equation.
The timing is right. I wouldn’t call Campbell a superior QB to Cassel. Flynn still isn’t a sure thing. Orton is spoken for.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
Also, why are people so certain that Pioli is still so earnestly tied to Cassel?
Pioli strikes me as a pretty shrewd businessman with a good football mind…and I imagine he sees the same faults in Cassel that we all do, especially with how things went this season. Just because he brought Cassel in and gave him a hefty paycheck doesn’t mean he won’t cut and run for a better opportunity given the chance. This myth that Pioli has some blind allegiance to Cassel doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me any more. Early on yes, but certainly he has to be open to other options now…
cheapham - January 9, 2012
You're right.
I don’t see Pioli as a guy who isn’t willing to move on from a mistake. Honestly, I wouldn’t call Matt Cassel a mistake. He was (pre-Orton) the best QB to wear a Chiefs uniform since Trent Green. The NFL is an opportunistic league. Cassel has been more than serviceable and helped guide the Chiefs back into being a respectable franchise. Unfortunately, he has gone as far as he can with this team.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
The Pats teams Pioli worked for were notoriously unsentimental.
I can’t see him holding onto Cassel just to try and prove himself right.
Rev. Slappy - January 9, 2012
I'm all for getting rid of Cassel...
But I’m not sure Orton is a huge improvement.
Scott B. - January 9, 2012
Orton is a better decision maker than Cassel...
And his arm is better. A huge improvement over Cassel? No. Slight improvement? Yes. Better for the team overall? Not so sure. Orton is known to be a bit selfish and not a solid team leader. If you bring on young talent at QB, Cassel is probably brings more sound leadership to help develop a young QB than a guy like Orton. If you don’t bring on a young, fresh QB talent (RG III?) than you have to keep Orton and Cassel and let them battle it out…only so see Orton come out on top between the two, who provides us a better chance at winning by utilizing our whole WR corps, not just Dwayne Bowe.
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
Orton is a huge improvement over Cassel.
I could name maybe 10 QB’s in this league i would take over Kyle Orton. I, secretly, felt that way before he ever became a Chief. He never had a chance in Denver, he was the consolation for losing Jay Cutler in all Denver fans eyes. Then when Tebow was drafted, the hype of all hype, he was in the way of him getting in the starting line up. Kyle Orton is the most underrated QB in the NFL.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
I'm not sure Orton even wants to be here next year though.
Chiefs447 - January 9, 2012
True
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
If the money is there, he'll be here.
He did say the game against Green Bay was the most fun he had in the NFL.
Eastcoastransplant - January 9, 2012
KC is close to home, though.
His family only lives about 3 hours from KC.
TwelfthMan - January 9, 2012
Did the Chiefs sign Orton, a FA, to a contract?
Did I miss that somewhere?
It’s news to me. Remember, if Orton does not sign, the Chiefs get a supplemental draft pick (I think), which Pioli may like if he still believes Cassel can be the guy, at least for the remainder of his contract. I’d like to see Orton signed, but if I’ve missed it, let me know.
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
pioli needs to swallow his ego and sign orton and trade cassel
we have already given cassel his big up front money. We got stanzi, need to see what we got with stanzi. I think stanzi will be no worse than cassel long term and could be a legit qb
niageriannit1 - January 9, 2012
Not surprised, not against it at all
My only critique now, as posted above in response to another posting, is that defensive minded coaches (especially old school coaches) tend to be conservative on the offensive side of the ball. I just hope that Crennel, a defensive guru, doesn’t keep so true to conservative ball management that he allows us to go stale on offense. This offense needs a SPARK and needs some CREATIVITY to keep defenses guessing and to allow Cassel to play within his skill set. Let’s be honest, even all you Cassel proponents who say he got us to the playoffs – or who point out what he did in NE – Cassel only thrived in an offensive scheme that was conservative when needed (allowing us to utilize our RBs effectively) but also using enough creativity to allow Cassel to thrive within his skill set without asking him to perform more than he is capable of. I don’t know if Muir or another no name brought in for “continuity” sake is the answer!
Please Romeo, please, lobby Pioli to take the OC position seriously and seek out a long term, creative minded answer! Please!!! ………and maybe a new QB to go with it!!!! Ok, that may be asking too much…but I hope not!
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
Good news.
Now trade up to get RG3 please.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
If he even comes out this year...
Scott B. - January 9, 2012
If he even delcares
and if he did, we would not sell the farm at this point to get him.
Coady - January 9, 2012
Agreed.
I don’t want to see this happen. It didn’t work out for Atlanta getting Julio Jones. Yeah he was a great player, but they still tanked in the first round of the playoffs.
Do not sell the future, Scott.
Falcon58 - January 9, 2012
Julio Jones isn't a Heisman winning QB...
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
RG3 has not played a snap in the NFL...
Falcon58 - January 9, 2012
Julio Jones is a stud WR.
But five draft picks including 1st and 4th next year? Absolutely silly.
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012

KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
I want a QB - our very own, QBotF
Bu it looks like there are really only two (maybe?) or 3 viable options there. So If we don’t somehow land on Luck/RGIII then (and that’s quite likely that we won’t) I agree we need to go Oline.
Eastcoastransplant - January 9, 2012
You want to use a 12th overall on a RT?
We can use FA to go after a competent RT. The Chiefs are at the doorstep of having a dominant defense and a top 3 run game. What we don’t have and direly need is a legit QB. Get a QB and this team is a contender for a decade.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
Oh come on, let's not use the ''value'' talk about Oline in the first round
Lower salaries with the increase of importance on Oline makes it a good pick if it goes that way.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I see no purpose to using a 12th overall on a RT when we can get one in FA.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
Peyton Manning
will probably be available.. Let’s get him.
GaryfromIA - January 9, 2012
yeah I'm waiting to see if the colts pay the 28 mill to manning
manning will be available in my opinion. Will be a chief
niageriannit1 - January 9, 2012
Colts Have to many people to sign!
If they can not trade Manning he will end up being cut. There are to many holes on the Colts roster for them to have that much money tied up into 2 QBs. If the Colts do select Luck or RGIII I can see Manning being cut if not traded. At this time though I would want to see Manning be back to at least 80 to 85% of his former self before investing in him. If he gets back to at least 85% he will be a big upgrade over Cassel/Orton in just his management of the game alone.
LocoGonzo - January 9, 2012
Which RT in FA?
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Exactly.
With the new rookie salary cap, all of the old arguments about “not taking this position, that high” go out the window. I will no longer listen to them. Take care now, bye bye then.
I’d rather they draft DeCastro at G than an RT that they can draft in the 2nd or 3rd round.
And if Pioli sells the farm to trade up… I’ll shave my head.
Falcon58 - January 9, 2012
Will you polish said head?
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
After I shave it? Sure.
And I’m referring to the one on my shoulders. Just so we’re clear.
Falcon58 - January 9, 2012
That was question #2
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
My point is that we shouldn't be focusing on taking a RT when the most important position on the team is still in question.
I’d rather see Pioli use our resources effectively to address the QB situation than go after a RT that can be had via free agency…
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
Hard to debate to go RT/Oline in the first without FA to know if we filled RT/OG
At this point, I would go Oline and shore that up for the running game and whatever QB we have behind center. If we can shore up the Oline in FA then QB becomes a good option
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
True. FA starts in early March... the Draft is a month later.
We’ll be able to make much better arguments by then. But hell, we gotta do something for the next 3 months, right?
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
Cornhole anyone?!
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I say Oline with the 12 pick
Go oline with the 12 pick and trade a our second to GB for Matt Flynn unless he is a FA. Trade Dorsey for a 2nd or 3rd and trade Cassel for a 3rd or 4th if possible. The biggest issues thorugh are if the team is going to resign Bowe and or Carr. Losing Carr will set back the defense.
LocoGonzo - January 9, 2012
Flynn will be FA
They have said that they will not pay him big money nor Tag him due to the cost.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
TY!
I was not sure. We have a better shot at getting him the we do either Luck or RGIII and for a cheaper price tag the what the team would need to spend to move up in the draft. Flynn has also learned a lot from Rogers in the last few years and looks to be ready to have his own team. I liked what I saw from him in the packers last game of the season. I will bet money that Pioli has his sights set on Flynn more so then trading up in the draft (If he is going to get another QB).
LocoGonzo - January 9, 2012
I wouldn't be happy going after Flynn
Another teams back up.. lately there has been
Cassel who stepped on a great Pats team and looked good
Kolb who stepped into a good Phillys offense and tore up bad defenses like KC’s
Now Flynn is stepping into the SB champs offense which has a stacked WR corp, and played 2 bad secondaries…
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Whichever one we can get. LOL. Most would be a better pick up than Richardson.
There are 26 OTs that should hit FA, unrestricted:
Brandon Keith from ARZ, for example. The Cards also have Levi Brown up for FA. They’ll likely sign one and let the other go… which would probably be Keith.
Demetrius Bell from BUF maybe. Had injury problems this year, but has been a decent LT up til now.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
IF Bell could switch to RT, and improve his runblocking then it would be a good pick up
I’m not sold on the OT’s this year, in the first round anyways. DeCastro is the only Olinemen I would be happy with in the first.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Plenty of LTs make the move to RT, especially towards the end of their careers.
Not that I think Bell is approaching the end of his career at 27, I’m just saying that it’s not uncommon for FA OLmen to be shuffled around when a new team picks them up. IMO, the Right/Left side argument is a non factor.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
Not all can make the switch though
Never a sure thing when you have to completely flip your kick slides/hand placements/etc, some players even have dominate hands to where they have to be on one side due to the other side being too weak
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
In which case we'd just have to determine if an 80% Demetrius Bell is better than a 100% Richardson, lol.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
We would have to determine if 80% Bell, for the price better than
Martin/Reiff/Sanders. No way I want to go into next season with BRich starting at RT
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
I wholeheartedly disagree with you guys.
The Chiefs are a QB away from being legit contenders. We can replace Richardson with a Free Agent RT, we don’t need to spend a 12th overall on RT.
In 2009 the Jets traded away a 1st, a 2nd and 3 mediocre players to move from 17th to 5th to get Sanchez.
I’d give up a 1st and 2nd plus… say Dorsey to get Griffen. In a heartbeat.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
In 2009 the salaries were different
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
So?
That might mean that we’ll see a lot more trading this year because teams are more willing to move now.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
It will likely take more to trade up because of the lower salaries
Especially in this draft where there are only 2 ’’elite’’ QB prospects, RB is deep, CB is deep.. Oline not so much
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
We'll see.
It would involve the Chiefs having to trade with MIN, who could really use some WR help… and a solid 43 DT would help them out too.
The Chiefs should be able to trade 2 or 3 draft picks plus Dorsey or Bowe and make the deal. You wouldn’t be ok with that? To get a real franchise QB?
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
Would likely have to deal with the Rams for #2
Which as I’ve said if we can only Tag Bowe, then turn around and swap first round picks+Bowe+2nd next year for RGIII, I would love that.
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
You think the Vikes would take Griffen?
When teams will be clamoring to trade before the Browns are on the clock? I don’t. I think they’ll stick with Ponder, who they spent a first on last year, and be willing to pick up draft picks and/or players to build their team with.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
I assume teams will try to jump up with the Rams to insure they get RGIII and not get jumped
I don’t think the Rams or Vikes will take RGIII
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Sanchez?
Sanchez is your argument? MWA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
The only thing that makes this plausible, is that RG3 will possibly be 3 times the QB that Dirty Sanchez is.
Falcon58 - January 9, 2012
The caliber of the player doesn't matter for this discussion.
Only the caliber of the pick.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
I hope we get an OC now that opens the game up
But that assumes we have a QB that can throw a ball more than 10 yds down the field
Ren - January 9, 2012
At this point in the Chiefs re build
they needed some kind of continuity…starting over with a new coach, new schemes , all new staff, etc would comepletely tear down the foundation that was started…Romeo is not the glamorous pick, but I think he is the right pick….as long as he is surrounded by the right assistants. They also need to do something big….we need a LEADER on the field…
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Pioli obviously did not agree with the foundation that was started
and that’s why we are starting over to an extent. As long as we keep the same guys, we can maintain continuity BUT improve as well. If you are only focused on continuity but not improvement than you are missing the bigger picture…winning!
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
i mean foundation, as in players, type of players...
and Pioli is the one that brings the players in…Haley was not utilizing them correctly and clashing with Pioli…
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Yes and No
He brought in the players for Haley to coach. He also brought those players into a system managed by Haley, not Pioli. The pendulum of blame also swings Pioli’s way as he, likewise, chose not to work with Haley and buy into his system…hence the reason for a mid-season firing, new HC and question marks elsewhere on the team. Just keeping the perspective.
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
i think youre missing my point
Romeo brings continuity to a team that was built by Pioli…the defense will stay the same(continuity) Romeo knows the Offenseive players, what they do well, what they dont, there is not as much need for evaluation from a “new coach”(continuity)….basically, with Romeo, you are really only “starting over” with the offensive scheme…the defense that he built is pretty much set, minus a player or two and depth
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
I Think He Was More Unhappy With The Guy Running The Product On The Field
And I’d agree with him to an extent. I think that Haley had some personnel issues that were Pioli’s fault, but that he also did lot to underachieve with what was given to him.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
It's official:
And you can listen to the press conference HERE.
JacinB - January 9, 2012
From that article on KCChiefs.com:
JacinB - January 9, 2012
It is crazy that as fans we went from knowing with a certainty
that Romeo Crennel was at his ceiling as a defensive coordinator just a few months ago.
To now believing that he is the best possible man to be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs after Haley was fired and the Chiefs knocked off an undefeated team in a close match up.
It is hard to look at the situation and think that Romeo Crennel will keep this team going in the right direction if they don’t win right away. In order for Romeo Crennel to work as HC, you can’t have any down times IMO.
Everyone thinks the players play hard for Romeo… what if things go wrong though early. Will he lift the team back up?
That is what I worry about, but now the future hinges on these up coming coordinator hires/promotions. It is a crucial time for the Chiefs. If they screw this up, we will watch them reprogram the organization in two years from Scott Pioli on down.
Get it right Kansas City.
Chief-blinders-on - January 9, 2012
You are right and the coordinators are going to make or break this move
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
100% agree C-B-O
Hoochdawg - January 9, 2012
I never knew with certainty any such thing.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Five months ago, you thought Romeo Crennel was Head Coaching candidate moving forward?
I think most of us thought that he was a DC in one of his final tours…
I don’t have anything against Romeo, I just don’t think we should turn a blind eye to his past because of three games. The Chiefs fired Todd Haley with three games left to get a jump potentially and we hire the interim??? What team does that?
To me, that is risky. I really want Romeo Crennel to succeed, I Iike RAC, but knowing that we are going to need a new head coach in a few years no matter what is disheartening.
The Chiefs had an opportunity to find a long term solution and they went with a bandaid instead. Hopefully the move forward with a plan to make this work.
I will be on board no matter what the Chiefs do, but now is the time to be critical of a shady hire IMO.
Chief-blinders-on - January 9, 2012
Yes.
I thought there was a chance that Romeo could get another HC offer down the road, and often corrected people who suggested that he was happy just being a DC and he knew he wasn’t a good HC. As I stated many times, he said when he was hired as DC that he’d like to have another shot as HC. And I felt that if he was successful as DC, he’d probably get another chance.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Fair Enough
but I don’t think that was the general consensus.
I appreciate the idea that you like Romeo Crennel and believe in him Tarkus, that is great, but you don’t think people are completely ignoring his flaws from the past right now?
His positives are so glaring that they are hiding his dirt sheet that you have to dig for.
Chief-blinders-on - January 9, 2012
I don't think people are ignoring his past.
They’re just hopeful that he’s learned from his mistakes and will do a better job this time around. There are no sure things, or they wouldn’t be available. If RAC was coming from another team, I probably wouldn’t be so happy. But for where the team is at right now, I think he’s the best choice.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Normally I am with you soaking up the positives
But I have to see what else the Chiefs do with this move to make it complete before I start downing the kool aid.
I am happy that Josh McDaniels will not be a Chief, but where do we go from here is weighing heavily on my mind right now.
I want to see some good hires and a contingency plan for when Romeo retires or has more health issues in upcoming years set in place..
Chief-blinders-on - January 9, 2012
Not really drinking the Kool-Aid.
I think Romeo’s legacy as Chiefs head coach will likely be determined by who he hires as OC. If he brings in someone someone solid, who can get the most out of our weapons, I think he’ll be very successful. He he brings in Muir 2.0, he’ll fall flat on his face. The good thing is we don’t really have to worry about the other side of the ball, like we would if an entire new staff was being brought in.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
If the Chiefs say
go into next season with:
Romeo – HC
Zorn – OC
Gibbs – DC
with a couple new position coaches, I think that could turn into a disaster really quick. That would be too much status quo. This team needs some new ideas and they really could be in a good position.
Perhaps something like:
Romeo – HC
Sparano -OC?
Tucker _DC?
That is the problem, there is no slam dunk answer and I think if Romeo struggles at all early, this team may not recover.
The other worry that I have with this team is now that Haley is gone, everyone will get fat and happy during the offseason… I suppose we will see.
Chief-blinders-on - January 9, 2012
I see no reason to hire outside for a new DC.
But I wouldn’t be thrilled with Zorn as OC. That’s one side of the ball that I wouldn’t mind be blown up and started over.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
i dont want to see fat and lazy
but ive always thought some of the guys would play better aand not get pushed around so much if they weighed a little more….i understand being in shape, but sometimes GIRTH is whats needed….ask Vince Wilfork
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
His contract is only for 3 years...
Obviously the typical length of a coaching contract. Yet it doesn’t instill confidence in anything long term either because of Romeo’s age (no discrimination but a distinct possibility) and/or the fact that this is also another “trial run” for HC. I just hope its because 3 years is all they could agree to up front with the expectation that it hinges on future success for a potential contract extension if things go well. I just hate the “if’s” and the feeling that we still may be lacking something long term in both the coaching and QB roles.
JMagsKC1 - January 9, 2012
I will not disagree with you.
But I believe the same applies to any head coach. I will say that you need strong leadership in your personnel with a “player’s coach”, but I think the Chiefs have that these days.
m.yashi - January 9, 2012
It's still a players league.
One full of grown men who are highly self motivated. One aspect I like about this Chiefs team is that they have seen every bit of adversity and, at times, have rebounded greatly. The best players do not need a high level of outside motivation. I remember seeing DJ mic’ed up for the Dolphins game (i think) and said it best, “you’re never as bad as you think you are, and you’re never as good as you think you are.” It’s a great way to look at things while keeping an even keel.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
A coach told DJ that.
The only players’ league is the NBA.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
Huh?
I never thought that.
Tomahawk29 - January 9, 2012
We still need a LEADER on the field...Now go get Peyton
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Too much uncertainty there...
There’s talk he might not be able to play again. Now, i would be ecstatic to see P. Manning in a Chiefs uniform, but it’s hard for me to put my eggs in that basket at this time.
JayhawksNChiefs - January 9, 2012
of Course, "at this time"
but, it still rings true that this team needs an offensive leader on the field…a guy that “runs the show”…Chiefs have not had that since Trent Green left us
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
A few weeks ago, I was on board with this.
But now, I’m not. He’s going to be 36 years old. And he might not be healthy, ever again. Not really. I’d rather roll the dice on Flynn.
Falcon58 - January 9, 2012
First hard hit Manning takes as a Chief
Season over. Nice to know ya. Start over with Stani. Ad nauseum.
skunk420 - January 9, 2012
he had a pinched nerve
people actlike he broke his neck or something….where are people getting this info, that the first hard hit he takes he is gonna be crippled???
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Uh, No
He had deteriorated vertebrae in his neck which required spinal fusion. Much more serious than a pinched nerve. And it was his third neck surgery, I believe.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Two surgeries just since he last played.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Basically
They took bone from his hip to put into his neck. They don’t do that with stingers.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Along with supposed Stem Cell treatment
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Yup
It was major surgery. And even Manning admitted that he lost strength in his throwing arm. I’d be less worried about reinjury with him than with the possibility that his athletic ability has significantly declined.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Major major surgery
Manning, even if healthy.. really should take a few steps back and think about quality of life AFTER football
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
With The Procedure He Had
Using bone from his hip rather than from a cadaver, apparently he’s much more likely to develop arthritis and need hip replacement.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Yeah, along with his neck not being a sure thing, and his shoulder being up in the air...
Not worth it IMO
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Agreed
Plus, he’s 36…I’d have concerns even if he wasn’t hurt.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
im going to do research before i talk anymore on it
my understanding was that he has 3 simple procedures and the muscles were not regenerating as fast as they expected..which was why he did the stem cell stuff…..
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Thank you for doing research and figuring out what you are talking about before attempting to call out other people
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Heh. :)
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
is this sarcasm?
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Nope I'm completely serious
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Jeez, Play Nice, Guys
No need to get huffy about a discussion about a guy who isn’t even on our team.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
I is playing nice ;)
AZ knows me haha
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
i think Tarkus's comment
’heh’’ made me thin you was being a smartass…..
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
It's all good
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Tarkus' damn fault. Troublemaker. :)
skunk420 - January 9, 2012
Agreed.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
The Stem Cell Treatment Was To Speed Healing Of Nerves, I Believe
They were concerned because the strength wasn’t at the level they expected and Manning was also trying to play again this year. That’s why he opted for the surgery where they removed bone from his hip rather than using bone from a cadaver.
There really isn’t anything minor about neck surgery or neck injuries…they’re often career enders. I herniated two discs in my neck which pretty much ended my rugby playing days…doc said it’s a degenerative condition and that neck surgery will often not fix all of the problems. Clearly I didn’t get the same level of care as Manning, but I also didn’t take nearly his level of abuse.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
Copied from ESPN story Dec 2nd
“The 35-year-old quarterback hasn’t practiced since having a spinal fusion Sept. 8. The surgery was intended to repair a damaged nerve in his neck that caused weakness in his throwing arm. It was Manning’s third neck surgery in 19 months and the most risky and complicated of the three”.
“Manning had less invasive neck surgery in May, but when the nerve did not regenerate as quickly or as well as anticipated, he had the fusion.”
And last but not least.."
“X-ray and CT examination of the surgical area shows that the fusion performed in September has achieved firm fixation,” Watkins said. "Peyton will now be allowed to increase the intensity and breadth of his workouts as tolerated. There remains every indication that his recovery will continue.
So, yes, there was a"fusion" surgery, but it was to repair a NERVE, NOT from vertabrae deterioration
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
also...
In a statement issued by the team Thursday night, Watkins said Manning’s neck has finally healed
- right in the twoto four-month timeline predicted by neck and back specialists who did not treat Manning.KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
i dont know why it crossed that out..."right in the two"
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Would that make
it okay to give up a high pick or 2 for the man. No thanks for me.
skunk420 - January 9, 2012
Academic Point For Me
He’s still 36, still hasn’t shown he’s able to throw like he did, and still makes too much money.
We’ve got a young team that’s probably three years from making a legit run at the Super Bowl if everything goes right. Where’s the upside in signing a 36 year old QB who may or may not be as good as he was in 2010? Just not seeing it.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
If you think for a second that I would just go in with guns blazing..
without knowing he was fully healed, youre crazy…but if you have the chance to get a healthy peyton Manning, you explore every option out there to get him. No ifs, ands or buts….He instantly makes everyone around him better. EVERYONE!….and IMO he instantly makes us Super Bowl contenders next year, even if we didnt change the roster one bit….The players we have now, plus Manning, is as good or better than ANY team Manning has had in Indy…maybe minus Marvin Harrisson
KCinAZ - January 10, 2012
I Tend To Think That's Giving Manning Too Much Credit
Tom Moore, the offensive coordinator for years, had as much to do with Peyton’s success as anyone. Manning would not only be an old QB coming here, he’d be an old QB learning a new system. I’m not even sure that Manning would have been as good if he hadn’t gotten hurt and had played this year, since Moore got run off to New York by the Polians.
UCrawford - January 10, 2012
And Let's Not Overlook The Role Of Supporting Talent
With Marvin Harrison, you’re talking about possibly one of the top five receivers in NFL history. And Reggie Wayne was an All-Pro talent. I like the potential of Bowe/Baldwin/Breaston, but they aren’t the same caliber of receivers as Harrison and Wayne…at least not to this point.
UCrawford - January 10, 2012
Why did Montana succeed here?
Brsrkr - January 10, 2012
Define "Succeed"
We didn’t win or even get to a Super Bowl with Montana. He had a so-so season his first year here (and a good playoffs until his concussion in the AFC Championship) and a better individual season the year after, where the Chiefs didn’t really go anywhere. Meanwhile, the 49ers turned the pick we traded for Montana into Dana Stubblefield, who played a lot longer than the two years Montana had left
If that’s the payoff for getting Manning, no thanks.
UCrawford - January 10, 2012
Thats just silly to me
If Manning has 3 years left, and gets us to 1 SB, it was worth it….KC has not even sniffed a SB in 40 years…
In his first year with KC Montana took us deep into the playoffs….whos to say that Manning cant do the same or more….KC Chiefs franchise is not in a position to get a top tier QB from the draft this year, so, if you are interested in giving your team the BEST CHANCE to win, and Peyton Manning is HEALTHY and available, you do EVERYTHING you can to get him…because he can bring KC a Championship….IF HE IS HEALTHY….
Answer this, in the next three years, who gives you a better chance to win a SB…a healthy 36 yr old Manning, Kyle Orton, Matt Cassel, or a rookie QB???
KCinAZ - January 10, 2012
Depends On The Rookie And The Team
Teams have won Super Bowls with worse QBs than Orton or Cassel and there are many great QBs who’ve never won one. Getting Manning does not guarantee we’d go to a Super Bowl.
UCrawford - January 10, 2012
And I Don't Know If Manning Is Healthy
So until that’s more clear, it’s pointless to try and make odds on how much he’d help any team.
UCrawford - January 10, 2012
I agree with the health thing.
But the Montana question was sorta a trap :) The way you were arguing, it was almost certain you’d have to try to say that he didn’t succeed here. But it’s self evident that he did succeed – that is, he brought the team a lot closer to its real potential than ANY other QB we’ve had since Dawson (and that’s been quite a few QBs). He not only
wonallowed the team to win, he made clear the shortcomings and strengths of the team and allowed us to move forward with clear eyes…. The fact that the management ignored much of what the Montana experience revealed is a personal failing of those individuals. So, I guess “succeed” for a player means that he allows/helps the rest of the team to attain and perceive its true potential. Pretty much the definition of a team leader.Dana Stubblefield….a very good player, but he didn’t carry SF to a Superbowl. He didn’t even by himself allow SF to sign and retain the person who DID carry SF to a Superbowl.
Brsrkr - January 11, 2012
My whole arguement is based on...
whether he is healthy and available…if he is, with the Chiefs current QB situation, they would HAVE to investigate whethter thay could get him here….
KCinAZ - January 11, 2012
The "pinched" nerve is actually a symptom
of the larger problem outlined above. Pressure on those nerves, if not entirely and completely released, results in numbness and weakness in the forearms and hands. Not exactly what you want as a QB. You wanna see Pey Pey letting the ball slip out backwards aka Brad Johnson every fifth throw? I don’t.
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
LaCanfora just said...and i quote
“now the job is to find an offensive coordinator to GET MATT CASSEL BACK ON TRACK”……….NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Well he is the best QB currently on the roster
Gotta use his name, I hope things change though haha
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
lol Cassel has not been the best QB on the roster since high school...
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
Cassel/Palko/Stanzi
Yeah.. he is the best out of those 3
BAMFSpecialOps - January 9, 2012
Technically
Orton is on the roster for another couple months. :)
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
it was a joke
because he was not even a starter in college, but he is for the Chiefs…

Palko and Stanzi at least started in college
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
To be fair.
Neither had a Heisman Trophy winner on the roster to compete with.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
i know...
has there EVER been a QB that didnt start in college get drafted besides Cassel?…i mean, guys like Romo that went undrafted, at least started in College
KCinAZ - January 9, 2012
I doubt it very much.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
No QB Who Ever Never Started A College Game Has Become A Starter In The NFL Except Cassel
The closest comparison is Jay Schroeder, who started one game in college. Matt Cassel is actually the most successful college backup of all time.
UCrawford - January 9, 2012
and lucky us....we get him on our team.....sigh

Are you speaking of Matt Leinart?
Matt Leinart had FIVE NFL caliber guys on that offense around him. Matt Leinart won the Heisman, yeah, but did he really deserve it or did he benefit from what was around him? His NFL results would suggest the players around him at USC elevated him, not the other way around. That USC team was loaded, and played teams that were not so much.

Not talking about the NFL.
And whether or not you think they deserved it, both were considered the best players in the country at the time.

As A Guy Who Saw Plenty Of Cardinals Games
There wasn’t much to be impressed about with Leinart. He’s got below average arm strength, questionable work ethic and accuracy and, most importantly, couldn’t beat out Derek Anderson for a roster spot.
Plus, that’s the second time he’s broken his collarbone. Leinart has done nothing to impress in the NFL.

orton the best qb on the roster rightnow
niageriannit1 - January 9, 2012
At least until March.
