The Kansas City Chiefs officially introduced Romeo Crennel as the new head coach on Monday (which you should know by now since we've been talking about it all day) and we're going through Monday's press conference picking out the interesting tidbits (and there weren't many).
We talked about the update on the coordinators as well as the quarterbacks.
A couple of other quotes:

Pioli on the coaching search: "There was no foregone conclusion on who it was going to be because there were people out there that we needed to interview. We went out and talked to well over a half dozen people."
So that's the number -- more than six coaching candidates. Joe Philbin and Jeff Fisher were reportedly two of those guys. The others? Think we'll ever find out?
Pioli on the final three games: "There was a great deal of accountability and consistency. There was also a different energy from the football. So, yes, a lot had to do with those last three weeks."
Pioli says the final three games did matter (obviously) in making the decision on Crennel. It's interesting that he said that had "a lot" to do with it. I figured Crennel's hire would be as much about what he's done the last two years in KC as the last three games.

I hope those last 3 games play a part in Pioli re-signing Orton
and dumping Cassel
KingChief - January 9, 2012
Because Orton was so good in those games?
NotAHippie - January 9, 2012
Did better than Cassel
he only had 3 weeks with the team and out performed Cassel stat wise. Give him a whole offseason he will put up more points.
KingChief - January 9, 2012
right.....
because Orton only had 3 games in the Chiefs’ offensive system, the opposing team didn’t know what to expect from him playing within the system compared to 2+ years playing with the Donkeys? (sarcasm ends here)
kaorder1 - January 9, 2012
Did he actually outperform him stat wise?
NotAHippie - January 9, 2012
yeah
Mr.Pibbs - January 9, 2012
Yep.
Orton had been inactive for weeks, then the finger injury, and was working with a new team and barely had any time to develop timing with his receivers and learn about their strengths and weaknesses. Sign Orton and give him an offseason to actually know and work with the team. Get rid of Richardson and get someone who can pass block on the right. Then build a play action game around Orton. With than and their defense, I think they would be an odds on favorite to win the division. Cassel just doesn’t read his progressions and simply does not have a deep ball. End of story.

First comment hijack.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
Really think so....
So by getting rid of Todd didn’t help the Offense. That is why Orton did good.
The playbook finally opened up and the players were excited for Todd getting the boot.
I remember Cassel did good and made the playoffs and probowl because of the man Weis calling the plays and not Todd like this year. Todd killed the team. Not Cassel.
AngryKitty - January 9, 2012
Here is the problem with Cassel....
It’s his delivery on deep throws. Not just the deep balls, but anything he attempts to throw 17 or more yards down the field. His first problem is an over stride when he goes to throw. His front foot is not below his body. Compare that to Orton and you will see that when Orton strides, he will have a very balanced base. The next thing that happens with Cassel, which is generally caused by his over stride, is his elbow drops. It generally drops below shoulder level. This causes the ball to sail most of the time. Watch the good quarterbacks in the league deliver a deep in or air one out and their elbows will be above or level with their shoulders as they start and move through their throwing motion. I can’t understand why this hasn’t been seen by coaches. I read over and over about Cassel not going through progressions, but that’s not the issue for me. He doesn’t seem to force many balls, but he misses throws an NFL Quarterback should make because of flaws in his delivery mechanics. I can only remember one deep ball being completed this year and that was to Baldwin against San Diego. He brings a lot to the table in gutsiness and leadership, but we have no vertical passing game with him in the game. I have been a long time Cassel supporter, but after really looking at the differences in his and Orton’s deliveries, I have to lean toward Orton. Orton won’t be the long term answer, or go to Pro Bowls, but with a good running game and a good defense, he has the tools to win playoff games. That’s good enough for me.
chiefs fan 13 - January 9, 2012
Did he have the same mechanical flaw in previous years, specifically with New England?
I’m not being a smart-ass. I am asking the question sincerely. Is this something McDaniels was able to coach him through while he was in New England, or did the talent in New England disguise it? Did he develop this mechanical flaw just since he’s been in KC? Was it just this year, or was he doing it last year, too?
Just curious, as it may indicate that a better QB coach could get more from him.
etp_stl - January 9, 2012
I didn't...
watch him much in New England and couldn’t really find any good highlights that you could see his delivery when he was with the Patriots, so I can’t really say. I noticed it last year when he would go to make a deep-in or deep-out throw or air it out 40-50 yards down the field. It seemed to get worse this year, but that’s my opinion.
chiefs fan 13 - January 9, 2012
It sounds like a lack of confidence in his arm strength.
Your description makes it seem as though he doubts his arm strength, resulting in the longer stride and dropped arm slot. Am I wrong?
etp_stl - January 9, 2012
That could...
be what it is. You see it with young pitchers in baseball when they attempt to throw harder. The throwing motion starts from the base and travels up until the ball is delivered. I just don’t understand why this hasn’t been a focus of Cassel’s development.
chiefs fan 13 - January 9, 2012
That's hard to judge when we aren't on the practice field.
How can we tell that it isn’t a focus and the Cassel either ignores it or fails to execute it? Sometimes I tend to be susceptible to assuming that continued failure to execute on game day means the coaches don’t try to address the issue. Sometimes its the teacher, and sometimes its the student that fails to learn.
etp_stl - January 9, 2012
Pioli always talks about substance over sizzle
Listening to him talk about Romeo Crennel and the last few weeks of the season, you would think he went with the sizzle this time…hmmm?
Chief-blinders-on - January 9, 2012
Specificity.
He’s being hired to coach this team. The major criteria should be….how he coached this team.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
Far too early
in your young GM career, Scott, to be looking for a 2nd HC. Perhaps if you did more due diligence the first time around, rather than just listening to Daddy, you wouldn’t be in this position.

I will say this about that.
It was a tough spot for him. He was hired late and then had to evaluate Herm before moving on. He didn’t have much to choose from at that point.Taking more time wouldn’t have kicked up more candidates. Haley had even less time to evaluate coordinators.
BinSC - January 9, 2012
Agreed
This is not revisionist history. It was a crazy set of circumstances to start things off.
Buck'O - January 9, 2012
He should have given Herm one more year.

Had to interview a minority candidate
Right?
Matt_Grbac - January 9, 2012 via mobile
Per the Rooney Rule, yes.
But what on earth does that have to do with anything?
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Just sayin'
That means one guy that was interviewed has to be a minority….just wondering who is was.
Maybe he interviewed Todd Haley again to cover the “Homeless” race.
Matt_Grbac - January 9, 2012 via mobile
Crennel had a formal interview
So I’m pretty sure that counted.

Matt_Grbac - January 9, 2012 via mobile
The rooney Rule is a joke
Cant count how many times I have seen a team set on hiring a coach (per reports) but bring in a minority to interview just to say they did it. Its a plan with too many loop holes. I think its been proven that any race can win a superbowl as HC. Its a ridiculous rule .

G.L. - January 9, 2012
Some "minority candidates" will turn down an interview for that reason
KingChief - January 9, 2012
Not very smart if they do.
The Rooney rule is about networking and experience with interviews. It doesn’t accomplish that if they don’t take advantage of it.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
The insane racial disparity between coaches and players in the NFL is what is truly "ridiculous"
It’s an embarrassment to the NFL, and they are right to address it. The Rooney Rule may not be the right answer, but at least it’s an answer.
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Answer?
its a bullshit system to make it look as if the NFL really gives a shit about racism..Its a mask. Not an answer
TheScreenName - January 9, 2012
I've always thought that Affirmative Action was inherently racist
ChiefWarPaint - January 9, 2012
Our society is racist
Affirmative action is an effort to compensate for (and hopefully someday actually change) that fact.
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Yayee!
Everybody gets a trophy!
Buck'O - January 9, 2012
Let's combat racism with more racism!!
See I could never get that logic.
ChiefWarPaint - January 9, 2012
Fortunately, the Rooney Rule doesn't do that.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Forcing teams to interview candidates based on race?
And not their merits? Sounds like combatting racism with racism to me.
ChiefWarPaint - January 9, 2012
What harm does an interview do?
They’re not saying they have to hire someone based on race.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
It's just racist
And I’m not for racism, if an owner is racist he’s no going to hire a black coach whether he has to interview him or not.
It’s just adding another rule because you can and it looks good for PR.
ChiefWarPaint - January 9, 2012
That's not the point.
The point is to give these guys the ability to network and to get experience in interviews. It’s not a matter of trying to cure someone’s racism. It’s about providing opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise exist.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
He's not even reading your replies.
electriclight - January 9, 2012
Not the first time that's happened. ;)
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Crennel seems to have interviewed and networked just fine without the rule
If you’re the best for the job you’ll get hired for it, using racism to combat won’t solve racism. Has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard.
ChiefWarPaint - January 9, 2012
If no one gives you a chance
because you’re not on their radar, how will they know you’re the best of the job?
Again, what is the harm being done? And how do you know Crennel never benefited from the Rooney Rule?
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
On their radar?
Football is the same as everything else in life. Your work speaks for itself. I am sure when Crennel was producing solid defense, it was on everyones radar. Word of mouth and actions speak volumes. I dont think the Rooney Rule has helped someone get hired that wasnt on his way to getting hired already.
So if this league has 27 HCs that are all minority, do we reverse that rooney rule?
TheScreenName - January 9, 2012
That's total bullshit
if it was about networking they could go to the local chamber. It’s entire concept predicated on race as an identifier and that in and of itself minimizes the merits of the candidate.
While it’s innocent and well intended, the real world effect isn’t realized without taint. It’s a sad PR mechanism that works for some but not for all.
Buck'O - January 9, 2012
Yes it does.
When you single out that at least one candidate must be african-american, then you are singling out solely based on race. That’s the definition of racism. In addition, there is no subsequent clause that indicates at least one candidate must be asian, latin, native american, caucasian, etc. Consequently, it is a rule defined specifically to single out and provide opportunity for a single race, african-americans. That is racist by definition.
Does it provide opportunity that might otherwise not be there for african-americans? Maybe. Does it promote equal opportunity in the hiring practices for NFL Head Coaches? It’s absolutely not equal. It’s an attempt to artificially adjust the scales based on race rather than capability. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
etp_stl - January 9, 2012
And you know what instead of the government worrying about racism in the private sector
They should worry about the racism inherent in their own system, regulations & laws.
The drug laws for instance are some of the most inherently racist laws ever created, yet you won’t hear peep about from our president or the law makers on changing those.
ChiefWarPaint - January 9, 2012
Actually, the laws on crack-cocain possession we just changed for this vary reason
See? Progress. :)
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Progress would be achieved by wiping the crime off the books.
Half-measures don’t help anybody
ChiefWarPaint - January 9, 2012
Excuse me?
So crack-cocaine possession must be wiped off the books as a crime to prevent racism? How does that work? Do only members of a single race possess crack-cocaine?
You can’t possibly have meant what you said here.
etp_stl - January 9, 2012
I like crack cocaine.
But I cook it myself so if I get caught taking it home, I’m only busted for powder. See? I smart.
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
The Rooney Rule
Is supposed to be that they interview a minority coach NOT on the staff. Personally, I think the Rooney Rule should apply to low level hires, positional coaches, and not to HC, OC, or DC. This would have a better effect in advancing minority coaches.
Falcon58 - January 9, 2012
Gotta say I agree
The “top down” approach of the Rooney Rule doesn’t seem like it actually addresses the heart of the issue.
cheapham - January 9, 2012
It doesn't
It’s yet another half-cocked affirmative action style PR stunt that far too often has the wrong effect. It’s a pathetic joke.
Buck'O - January 9, 2012
The Rooney rule is still BULLSHIT racist
What … The NFL don’t think other non-blacks or latino are minorities?
I don’t remember anyone interviewing Norm Chow….Rooney Rule is fraud!
58 was my friend - January 9, 2012
So Norm Chow gets jobs
without interviewing? He must be REALLY good.
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
Don't think it applies
if you promote someone on your own staff. So of the more than half-dozen, Romeo might’ve been the only minority candidate.

Phil Savage was the GM
but I’m sure the coach has some even if it’s a little say. He needs players that fit his system and style.

Hopefully he would have a say, but it is Cleveland and i cant remember the last time they have had a stud.
Jeremy Daniel - January 9, 2012

Phil Savage was the GM during Crennel’s tenure. The drafting during that period was less than stellar, to say the least.

Jim Brown.

Kblomfiee - January 9, 2012
I tend to agree..
NFL season ticket holder - January 9, 2012
Wow.
Kind of some wild speculation based on about zero fact. Where does raging on subordinates, being incompetent, and hamstringing any coach that comes along come from? Because he drafted Jackson? Not that I think it was necessarily a great pick, but we were so devoid of talent it didn’t really matter who he took. It is easy to see how everyone has panned out and say he should have taken this player or this one, but you don’t get to do that on draft day.
The fact is that he is still very respected as a GM throughout the league. I don’t know what goes on behind the curtain and neither does anyone else. If it were that bad, Crennel would have had other options with all the openings in the league.
BinSC - January 9, 2012
"he is trying to hard to sound intelligent"
Really? You misspelled “too.” Now who’s trying to too hard?
Take a breath, and realize that nothing you said in this comment is based on anything beyond pure conjecture and speculation.
cheapham - January 9, 2012
Well, yeah you are right, it is complete speculation on my part
but, that is my feeling about him.
Kblomfiee - January 9, 2012
Is he ....
“a lame duck who is riding out his success,” or is he “a control freak who likely will hamstring any coach that comes along?” Those two seem disjointed and opposite to me.

I guess the Crennel hire is the right one, I mean who in the Chief upper brass cares what the fans think.
Hunt and Pioli have been feeding us a crap sandwich for three years now, I suppose this years helping might have a little poontang sauce to help it go down better this year. Know this, the salary floor doesn’t take effect until 2013, so I expect the Chiefs to languish near the bottom and achieve mediocrity at best. Crap sandwich anyone?
Snicklefritz - January 9, 2012
It seems funny
to me that people are hating on Pioli now.Whenever Joel runs a poll on how everyone is doing you get 85 -90 percent approval. Are you guys from the last 10 – 15 percent?I have been a chiefs fan longer than anyone on here as I started as a Dallas Texans fan.We got used to success early, but took a nosedive late 70’s &80’s.After Marty’s tenure we’ve been back to mediocre to poor.Give Pioli a chance. He has gotten us some very good players.A QB would set the tone for some winning season’s I’m sure.Let’s see how he attacks our biggest need.
chiefs63 - January 9, 2012
I agree with all of this.
He pretty much got the defense back to respectable. Now he needs to work on this offense.

Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
Just venting after taking a step backwards this year.
The unexpected berth in the playoffs last year resulted in lofty expectations for this year. When we didn’t make it back to the playoffs in a winnable division, especially with inconsistent play and regression on offense, it heightened frustration for an unsatisfied fan base. I’d rather be part of a passionate fan base, than an apathetic one. Sometimes that means you have to be subjected to irrational hatred on players/coaches/management/ownership.
Pioli has a course that he’s following. Unfortunately, I think we all would like to see it moving faster, but ultimately we’re still effectively trending upward. We have to be content with that.

Since we are talking race, I'm a white redneck who is happy Crennel was the hire!
There wasn’t any other coaches out there on the same playing field. I’m glad we have a defensive minded HC who will keep the Defense intact since it really has been the only bright spot this year. Give Crennel a good assistant because he will continue to call the D. I’m in favor of going out and getting a top notch OC though. I hope Crennel will draft some power lineman who are bigger. Until we get some guys who can win at the point of attack we will never consistantly beat SD, Oak, Baltimore, etc. I like Gs Decastro, Osemele and Glenn in this draft. I like Ts Martin, Adams, and pure RT Bobbie Massie if he declares. Massie, Osemele, Adams can be had in rounds 2 to 3 and maybe 4.

Pioli Hatred Amped Up For Making the Right Decision?
Those who want to hate, will do so, but I am surprised by the vitriol being spouted in Piolis direction off this hire. Reaction to the hire is overwhelmingly positive so what is Pioli getting ripped for?
Still griping about the Jackson pick…really? The success rate of that draft overall was terrible. The guy so many wanted instead (Curry) was traded for a bag of quarter pounders and a supersized fries.
I was surprised but will take the NFL stats at face value… Tyson Jackson total tackles by a DLineman ranked #15 for 2011. That would be top quarter of league. Even taking stats with a huge grain of salt it is tough in my mind to still call the guy a bust. Fine he is not Mario Williams but he is also not Vernon Gholston/Aaron Maybin…
500milestoarrowhead - January 9, 2012
I agree
I like the job Pioli’s done overall. Not everything mind you and much of his approach is very un-sexy, but damn! Hiring Romeo WAS the right decision and I’m not getting the hate aspect of it either.
Buck'O - January 9, 2012
Let's just Stop for one Min.
The Chiefs needed some stability. If we brought in any other coach we would start over from 2009. That would not help The Chiefs out next year. Think about the Defense at the END of the Season when everyone was playing at a higher level. Our defensive coordinator will prolly be Gibbs who has coordinated before and turned DJ into a Man. We need an OC bad like yesterday hell even 5 years ago we needed a OC. I like orton and all but we need to Draft a QB HIGH. Trade up do something this trading for everybodies garbage is BS and old. We have done it for over 20 years now IT NEEDS TO STOP.

and pick up an extra first next year. We could pick late in the first or even at the top of the second this year and still get a starter for RT, then have the double 1s next year to trade up for a QB of our choosing. Hell, it might even be Barkley or RG3…
nmchief - January 9, 2012
Agreed.
Everyone seems to want to trade up, but you make a good argument for trading down.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
I can see the allure of that kind of philosophy
but I have to disagree. While I don’t think we’re going to draft that perfect QB this year, I do think the Chiefs are getting really close to being in real contention. Could be just a couple of well placed draft picks and a FA or two that puts us over the hump. I’d hate to hold anything back on our chances. We have a core of young players who are really all hitting their prime together as a team and we really need to keep building on that.
Buck'O - January 9, 2012
nmchief for player personnel!
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
People said that about this year.
So, if things go realistically well, we make the playoffs, maybe win a game, and draft around 25 or so. There are twice as many top-shelf QBs next year as there are this year, and all four of them go in the top 10…..Is it gonna be that much cheaper to trade up from 25 to 9 than from 11/12 to 2?
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
My point is that it's been "next year" for several decades now.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
So wait for next year?
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
I don't think people thought all those QBs would stay in college.
People were assuming Barkley and Landry were coming out, and probably others.
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Yes, and the same thing will probably happen next year.
A couple of juniors will stay in, and there will be 2-3 QBs worth drafting in the top 25.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
Maybe.
What if RG3 stays in school?
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
That would be awesome.
Because it would double the probably number of top-shelf QB prospects next year from one to two.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
Ha!
Tarkus - January 9, 2012
Landry is crap.
He needs another year in college.
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
amen

And we’ve got Stanzi. :-)

All bs aside…about pioli….he made the right call this time….RAC is a solid coach that the players want 2 play 4…..i said after week 1 that haley would not make it thru the season…check my fanpost…Haley is a great coach but his approach rubbed far too many people the wrong way….including pioli ans possibly was a big reason why it was so hard for pioli to bring in good veteran free agents….with the core of guys we have that are all in their prime….hali,dj,flowers,albert,carr,bowe,jc….having a coach that they respect and admire goes along way….now top it off with romeo being an extremely good football coach…then you have the makings of somethin special….imo..we are just a solid qb away from aserious super bowl run….as bad as a season we had …we were a blocked a fg away from back 2 back home playoff games….and judginug by last nights spectacle in mile high we should

This is no surprise to anyone
The next 3 years depend on:
1) Who is the QB?
2) Who is the OC?

agreed
coordinator hires are gonna be huge. need to help Romeo manage d and we haven’t had an OC worth a shit since saunders.

anyone else here about Philbin's son dying?
Apparently he is 21yrs old and fell through some ice on a river in Oshkosh around 2:30am the other morning. Heard it on ESPN radio down here in San Antonio…sad news
jcrunninwild - January 9, 2012 via mobile
yes
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
Crennel, Del Rio, Philbin, Fisher…so that’s 4. Could have even interviewed Zorn easily. Marty was in town, perhaps he just said, “Want the job?” and Marty said, “No.” And that counts?
manofnothi - January 9, 2012
ha!
Buck'O - January 9, 2012
Scary to think the Broncos arrow is pointing up with that win yesterday.
Yesterday Tebow did what no Chief QB has done since Montana, and I have no illusions to think he is going to be worse off next year. In my mind, we have with Cassel, the fourth rated QB in the division.
Snicklefritz - January 9, 2012
I'm drooling at the prospect of playing Tebow
twice a year for a really long time. Pittsburgh screwed the pooch by cheating up too much and not leaving a safety over the top… not having Clark (?) really hurt them. Everybody knows Tebow throws a crappy ball except for the long ball to an open receiver… and the Steelers played right into their hands.
Keep a safety back, don’t let Ike (CB#24) get beat three times (Flowers and Carr would learn after one time like in KC) and that game goes the other way. Pittsburgh pissed it away. When will people realize the opponent is giving games to Tebow, he ain’t taking them?
Oh, well, that’s for another rant.
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
ORTON OR BUST!!!
MizzouChiefRedbird - January 9, 2012
I agree, but hearing the press conference leads me to believe Hunt and Pioli want Cassel.
Snicklefritz - January 9, 2012
Matt Cassel???!!!!!!!!!!!
For (vulgar Comment) how can anyone still be defending Cassel???? I ask that question then answer it myself. The simple conclusion is that there is still rape, murder, pillage, and plundering in this world. And Some think it is just fine.
Take this in consideration… Maybe it’s just been so long in KC since anyone has seen a quarter back play. Or at least a real one.
The other aspect is time. Time can wash away either sweet or bitter tastes.
think again about this (if capable). Brett Farve was who he was. At this point he played no better or worse than he did. But with Rodger’s performance he was worse in some people’s minds. If Rodgers would have sucked eggs, then Farve would have been perceived as better.
Cassel has sucked at every level. ! Period. Honestly LOOK at the film.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
Congrats.
You just covered Ben Roethlisberger, Ray Lewis, and the ancient Norsemen in a post about Matt Cassel!
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
For what little it's worth to anyone.
In my humble opinion, the QB position on this team can, could, should be upgraded regardless if they resign Orton or fall in love with Cassel all over again. I would not be surprised to see a rookie starting next season.
Chiefs_40 - January 9, 2012
Orton is an upgrade over Cassel and that will allow time to start a QB developing factory like in Greenbay
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
How much?
If he’s that great then why was he unemployed. He can be upgraded as well. And yes I know they don’t grow on trees.
Chiefs_40 - January 9, 2012
elway needed to clear up cap room and they had a ton invested in tebow to sit on the bench
Ren - January 9, 2012 via iPhone app
Orton asked to be cut because he was planning on signing with the bears .If Cutler doesnt get injured Orton doesnt get released and Romeo doesnt get hired
Willie Beamon - January 9, 2012
pure speculation
Orton asked to be cut because he wanted to play. To presume he wanted to sign with the Bears (a team that traded him for their injured starter) is pure speculation, unless you heard it from…???
Cutler will be healthy. Cassel will be healthy, presumably. Who do you think Orton has a better chance of beating out for a starting spot?
neiowakcfan - January 9, 2012
lol you keep trying to convince yourself that Orton didnt want to go to the bears and thats just speculation.
Considering his friendship with several of the bears stars ,the lawsuit recently filed in Chicago and the fact that at the time they were in the drivers seat for a playoff spot.
he wasnt going there longterm to compete with Cutler but he wouldve had a heckuva of a audition tape for other teams. for a few weeks . Considering the fact that he also had a newborn you think he was just hoping to be moved anywhere just so he could maybe play ?
Willie Beamon - January 10, 2012
At this point some team may actually give a pick for Cassell as well. I would like to see Stanzi get more attention, but bring Orton in would help his development.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
I guess I see your point.
I just don’t see Orton being that much better than Cassel. I just think the upgrade is marginal. You know how it is……………it’s just me wanting the world:)
Chiefs_40 - January 9, 2012
I meant get a pick. LOL
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
I think he isn’t the answered prayers of us all, but i think he is an improvement. He scans the field and delivers pretty accurate balls downfield. These are no attributes of Cassel. I’m not a stats guy. I watch the quality of the on the field performance. If a QB hits a WR in the hands three time and he fails to catch it. I don’t fault the QB for that. Orton’s numbers weren’t great in the Denver game, but the accuracy of his attempts were far superior to Cassel’s.
I fel with an upgrade at the O line and the return of our injured players, they could be very competitive next year with Orton. This is all while Stanzi and other drafted QB’s are learning the game while we use Orton for the next 2-3 years.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
I get ya.
And I agree Orton is an upgrade. Just tired of the 2 year projects you know. Like I said though, it’s just me wanting the world again. Can or will they draft a QB early? I have no idea. I am one that hates giving up draft picks for anything but, at this point i’m about ready to bet the farm on a early QB. I know it’s a risk and they have they have failed miserably at drafting QBs. It just seems like a great time to do it especially with the defense that is (should) keep us in games. I just wonder what they would have been like this season with someone like Newton. I will wish in one hand and shit in the other and i’m sure I know the hand that will fill up first…….just ready for a gamble.
Chiefs_40 - January 9, 2012
you don't have to shit yet hand to gamble you know
Ren - January 9, 2012 via iPhone app
It's the only type of gambling I can afford.
Chiefs_40 - January 9, 2012
well it is cheaper
Ren - January 9, 2012 via iPhone app
Unless it's enchilada night.
Chiefs_40 - January 9, 2012
yeah that sounds like it hurts
Ren - January 9, 2012 via iPhone app
An upgrade at O line is far more important than a QB early in this draft. Just so happens 2 guys off our last good O line are up for HOF right now. Honestly we haven’t been the same since Willie retired. We will be better in the red zone with an upgraded line. Remember a guy named Priest? We didnt throw much inside the 20 in those days. What was amazing was that defenses knew we would run and they did it anyway.
Don’t throw me out of the building for this, but I Croyle wasn’t playing behind KYLE FREAKING Turley & Jordan Black ?
Have to have an upgrade on the Front and then Orton will be just fine. All in the while Stanzi and future draft picks are being developed.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
I think we should upgrade the o line as well
Ren - January 9, 2012 via iPhone app
I think, besides retaining current talent, it is one of two most important lins to the big game.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
Another example:
Will Svitek started at LT for a playoff team this year.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
wow, didnt know that.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
He looked bad,
but I thought it was ironic considering how many APers say we need to recreate the 2003 Chiefs line in order to win.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
we were a bit weak at right tackle after Tait left. Wellborn held his own sometimes.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
I sure think it might help.
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
As rare as elite QBs are,
they are more common than 2003 Chiefs-esque lines.
Brsrkr - January 9, 2012
What we need is Continuity...
We all know that we have the foundation to have a good team. We have a solid core of young talent that can only get better with time. We All Have Eyes to see the week Links on Our Team. And we have a new head coach that knows what we need too, with just a few more twiks, we can be a really good football team ( Baring major injuries across the board). That being said we need to promote Thomas and Zorn to DC and OC. Get a new special teams coach and fill in the rest of the staff with the best coaches for the open jobs. Fill in the holes on defense and Sign Our talent and go get good free agents to fill in the rest…. Draft well… Have a Quaterback who can lead our team consistantly and be able to complete the ( deep) passes, Especially in the 4th quater with the game on the line. Our D was good enough to make the playoff this year. The offense was not, a blind man could see that. What I am saying is that we are not that far away from being contenders. Fill in the hole and keep Continuity of the Team Intact…. And a Super Bowl win can and will be ours again……….
Kool TA - January 9, 2012
In some cruel, and horridly vengeful way, at some level, I hope all the Cassel lovers get what they want…
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
Who are these "Cassel lovers" you speak of?
You mean the people who have reasonable opinions about what he can (and has) accomplished as an NFL quarterback? The people who rely on things like stats and facts, and tend to avoid overbearing rhetoric and exaggeration? The people with an honest assessment of the Chiefs’ position in terms of draft and FA when it comes to access to QBs? Does that make someone a “Cassel lover”?
cheapham - January 9, 2012
You shouldn't support him if what you say is true.
bossmanham - January 9, 2012
And may i request your humble and reasonable outlook on what Mr. Cassel has accomplished in the NFL?
zalpha1 - January 9, 2012
Orton lef the broncos to one of the best offensive performances of the year...
last year. The team as a whole was garbage but the QB can hardly be the blame for that when he is puttin up numbers. I don’t know why people think he can’t play. I say give him a contract and have him compete with cassel…if cassel is such a good back up then why not have both? so much arguing for very little reason.
