Good morning! A light day for Chiefs-centric stories. Here is your Kansas City Chiefs news. Enjoy.
Carl Peterson, former president of the Kansas City Chiefs, along with LSU Coach Les Miles, longtime high school coach Mickey Roussel of the Riverside Academy Rebels, and Ron Brocato, sports editor of the Clarion-Herald will be honored for their contributions to football by The Touchdown Club of New Orleans at a banquet Feb. 25, the club announced Wednesday.

In the real world of everyday NFL football, it has been the cause of a lot of study and tons of speculation, not to mention that half the league is trying to copy it.
As a result, a great number of employees have been hired away from the New England Patriots but, none, not a single player, head coach or executive, has been able to reproduce the so-called magic of the Patriot Way, elsewhere. Zero Super Bowl wins. Zero Super Bowl appearances.
Because there are so many ex-Patriot coaches, players and executives strewn across the league who have faltered... the Patriot Way should be called... the Patriot Waste.

Kansas City, OT, Jonathan Martin, Stanford: The Kansas City Chiefs have considered taking a tackle for the past couple of drafts. Martin would be a terrific choice for them and he should be available.

The Kansas City Royals baseball team is getting greener with the largest in-stadium solar array generating electricity in Major League Baseball.
The 160 solar panels, which have been installed and tested, are expected to produce 36,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which is enough to power for four homes...
... KCP&L, which meets about 7 percent of its demand overall with renewable energy, is looking for arrangements with other businesses or groups similar to the Royals' lease. Kansas City Chiefs' officials have indicated they are interested in producing solar energy at Arrowhead Stadium.

For all the things that are still up in the air, Peyton Manning is certain about this much: He isn't ready to retire yet.
"I have no plans on doing that," he said Tuesday.

New England Patriots veteran guard Brian Waters doesn't want your sympathy...
...But Waters, like many offensive linemen, does not want to be the story during Super Bowl week.
"I hope not, because this is so much about this team," Waters said. "It's less about me and it's more about this team, it's unbelievable. That's one thing I really appreciate here. ... So I hope it's not a sentimental thing with me. I really don't."

Rozelle, for his part, hated the name. He thought it lacked sophistication. So while the media latched on to the name "Super Bowl" almost immediately, it wasn't until Super Bowl III that the NFL used the term Super Bowl officially, putting the phrase on the cover of the game program.
The affectation of tacking on a roman numeral was Hunt's slightly cheeky response to Rozelle's fastidiousness. It wasn't until Super Bowl V that the roman numeral appeared on the ticket.

Sorry Ups
Peyton does not plan on retiring this year.
NJChieffan16 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
Peyton doesn't want to retire, he doesn't plan to
retire, but the question is will the doctors LET him play?
G.L. - February 1, 2012
Supposedly the bone has healed just fine
I don’t think it’s a question of whether or not the doctors will allow him to play (they will) but will he get enough nerve regeneration to allow him to make NFL throws.
jmcgoblue - February 1, 2012
100% correct
It has nothing to do with his getting injured down the road. It is about the fact that if the nerves dont regenerate the right way then he could not have the same ability throwing the ball.
He isnt a bigger risk of longterm injury to his neck than any other player in the NFL. It isnt that kind of neck surgery…
KSU-Chief - February 1, 2012
Why?
Hopefully he will make the right choice when the time comes.it would be sad to see him retire now,but his health comes first.it would be interesting to see where he goes if he does play.
chiefsfool - February 1, 2012
Well, at least one.
… Adam Vinatieri
Chernabog - February 1, 2012
Romeo Crennel will be the first!!
NJChieffan16 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
Kickers
arent part of the team… :)
KSU-Chief - February 1, 2012
They are when they win or lose games
KingChief - February 1, 2012
I know the secret, I can recreate the Patriot Way.
Just add Tom Brady to wherever you’re going.
There, now give me millions and a title of “GM”.
TRSChief - February 1, 2012
ha, was just about to post the same thing
having a HOF QB for 10+ years does make ‘the Patriot Way’ more viable.
jmcgoblue - February 1, 2012
So, it's actually The Brady Way.
Scott B. - February 1, 2012
Yep
Honestly, I believe too much credit is given to BB and the whole “Patriot way.”
BB didn’t win a thing without Tom Brady. And I don’t think he would have. Everyone raved about BB’s ability to “plug in” role players on the offense and make things work. But would that work without an all-universe QB?
Even looking at the Gronk… dude’s a beast, but would he be a RECORD-SETTING beast without Brady? I doubt it.
MNchiefsfan - February 1, 2012
They did win 11 games with Matt Cassel.
And that was the Cassel that hadn’t started since high school.
Tarkus - February 1, 2012
That's fair
And the credit for the surrounding cast that made that possible does fall to BB/Pioli.
MNchiefsfan - February 1, 2012
BB is the one who wanted to draft Brady though
and if not for Mo Lewis blasting Drew Bledsoe, Brady might not be there
KingChief - February 1, 2012
BB didn't want him too badly.
Or he wouldn’t have risked someone else taking him for 5+ rounds.
Tarkus - February 1, 2012
They talked about all of that when ESPN did that Year of the QB story on him
About how the Pats were the only team to call Michigan to see how good Brady was and how the Pats drafted their needs 1st and were surprised that Brady fell that far in the draft.
Brady talked about how he take it personal that 6 other QB’s went before him that’s why he goes out and tries to destroy every team he plays.
KingChief - February 1, 2012
So they were surprised he was still there?
That says all you need to know about how bad they wanted him, if they didn’t even think he would be available when they drafted him.
Tarkus - February 1, 2012
The QB coach at the time
don’t know his name , begged and pleaded with BB to draft Brady…. otherwise they may not have picked him up. it was part of that same story.
Hoochdawg - February 1, 2012
What Tarkus said
MNchiefsfan - February 1, 2012
It's amazing when you look at the Family Trees
BB’s tree has sported the NFL head coaches of: RAC, McDaniels, Al Groh, Eric Mangini, Nick Saban, and Jim Schwartz.
Of those coaches we hope RAC will do great, and Jim Schwartz has done a really good job in Detroit. Otherwise 0 SB’s, hell 0 SB appearances.
However interestingly enough 7 of BB’s executives have become GM’s and 6 still are.
While if we look at our own Schottenheimer tree we have: Cowher, Cunnignham, Dungy, Infante, Mike McCarthy, Herm, Cam Cameron, Wade Phillips, Tony Sparano. Cowher, Dungy and McCarthy have all gone to and won SB’s. The next level down on the tree also gives us Ken Wisenhunt, Mike Tomlin and Lovie Smith all going to and/or winning SB’s. So personally I’d rather have a Schottenheimer Chiefs Way than a BB Pats way.
Eastcoastransplant - February 1, 2012
The Marty tree is more impressive coaching-wise, for sure.
MNchiefsfan - February 1, 2012
Oh and if we look at those SB winning or going to SB teams...
Cowher and Mike Tomlin – Big Ben
Dungy – Manning
McCarthy – Aaron Rodgers
Wisenhunt – Kurt Warner
Hmmm do I see a pattern here?
Eastcoastransplant - February 1, 2012
In other news..
USA Today had a nice piece in their Sports section about rookie Mark Herzlich (Giants).
I know some of us had him on our later round draft boards last spring.
chiefsfan62 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
Instead of the Patriot Way
Maybe it should be called the Belichick Way because they continue to win after all their supposed gurus leave.
KingChief - February 1, 2012
They dont have a SB win :)
I am just kidding but it is also true that they have not won a SB since Crennel and Weis left…
KSU-Chief - February 1, 2012
But they have been twice since
which is more than any of the others that have left.
KingChief - February 1, 2012
I don't know about you guys...
But I prefer Pioli’s “Patriot Way” over the Carl Peterson Way. Our team is looking good…sans QB of course.
Brad-KC - February 1, 2012
Same result...
Glad you like looking good over actuall results…
KSU-Chief - February 1, 2012
actual*
KSU-Chief - February 1, 2012
What do you mean same result?
Got us to the playoffs the 2nd year into the regime and would have went again this year if our team wasn’t taken out by a sniper who loved knee shots.
Brad-KC - February 1, 2012
there were far more reasons than an injury to Berry that this team failed in 2011
and the fact that this team has so many flaws that were uncovered by just a couple of key injuries is proof that we’re not “there” yet, not by a longshot
this team has a ways to go, and it remains to be seen if Pioli has the sense to finish the build the right way, or if he wants to continue to play around and pretend he’s some draft genius
upamtn - February 1, 2012
I am glad some people get it...
KSU-Chief - February 1, 2012
Yeah...
never mind the fact that we started Palko for what… 4-5 games?
Just saying, we were 1 win away from going to the playoffs this season…which would have made it back to back. Coming from just 1 playoff appearance in the previous 10+ seasons. Coming from a previous 2-14 year. This has been a pretty quick turn around because of the “Patriot Way”. You guys are just bitter and want something to complain about.
Brad-KC - February 1, 2012
So lets compare
Carl Peterson took over a team 4-11, that had 1 playoff game in 17 years prior. He went 8-7 his first year 11-5 his next year(playoff loss) and 10-6(1 playoff win)
Scott Pioli took over a 2-14 team, that was in the playoffs 2 of the prior 6 years. He went 4-12 his first year, 10-6(playoff loss) and 7-9…
You want to talk about Pioli doing it the right way and trashing Carl… Pretty sure Carl took us to 9 straight winning seasons 7 playoffs in his first 9 seasons… He had 6 losing seasons in 20 years…
Learn your history before making uneducated comments.
KSU-Chief - February 1, 2012
Actually we are pretty close to being "there."
QB or not. Cassel is serviceable enough that if we have to use him we can. Hopefully it’s Orton, whom I believe is more than serviceable, but if not I think our D can pave the way.
We weren’t ready at the beginning of the year BECAUSE of Haley, with or without those three players. By the end of the year, the team looked very good sans some Safety issues that gave up some big plays.
We’re a couple of players short (depth and RT) from being a complete team.
bossmanham - February 1, 2012
We are close but,
If you look at the playoff this year, D’s only got teams so far. Turnovers or sloppy play lost teams games. And having an amazing QB. There are no Serviceable QB’s in the SB. Brady kept his team in it long enough for his D to figure it out. Manning, made use of two short fields when he needed to – and won in OT when he had to.
When you have a serviceable QB your D has to be exemplary and even then, at some point your Offense has to show up.
Eastcoastransplant - February 1, 2012
How about the chiefs way
Get their heads out of their asses, and try something on their own.isnt it funny how the patriots can take everybodys left overs and turn them into champions.try to figure out something on your own, open up that check book and fill in some major holes, you might see a hell of a differance.
chiefsfool - February 1, 2012
Ochostinco rode the bench and he might get a ring
KingChief - February 1, 2012
that open the checkbook approach (to free agents) is great for a team that's 90% complete
it’s a losing proposition for a rebuilding team such as the Chiefs, and unless the right moves are made in the draft we’ll continue to be a rebuilding team with issues and scoring problems and mediocrity in abundance
upamtn - February 1, 2012
I think we are more on the renovation side than rebuilding
I think the defense is good except depth in the secondary and a starting NT and the offense only truly needs a RT and QB
KingChief - February 1, 2012
meh ... still never have gotten back fully from the original teardown (my opinion)
the OLine has been a patchwork bit of propping the house up with rocks and sticks, but nobody’s really taken the sledgehammer and repoured that part of the foundation yet
that’s the best analogy I can give, but it’s why I’m dying for Pioli grab DeCastro and Adams or Glenn and some TE and really get the OLine done once and for all, as a group that will last … I firmly believe you build from the inside out, from the lines … we haven’t done that (yet) so this is Pioli’s chance to be as good as his word … I’ll believe it if and when I see it
