10 months ago: SAINT JOSEPH, MO - JULY 31: Offensive Coordinator Bill Muir talks with head coach Todd Haley during Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp on July 31, 2011 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)
It's official: Bill Muir is retiring.
After reports that he would retire, and then after him coming out and say he wasn't retiring, Muir has decided to hang 'em up.
The Kansas City Chiefs have officially confirmed the news via a press release at their website in which GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel are quoted. Here's what they had to say:
Muir: "It has been an honor to be a part of this great league for so long. Over the years I've made a lot of great friends and worked with many talented players and coaches. This was a personal decision for me, the timing was right. The Chiefs are in great hands with Romeo and Scott and I wish them nothing but the best."
Crennel: "I am excited for Bill as he moves into retirement. I have known him for a long time and he is one of the finest coaches I've ever been around and an even better person. Bill is a very good friend and I have a great deal of respect for the way he worked. It was a privilege to work alongside him."
Pioli: "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Bill. I have worked with him for a long time and have witnessed him develop a number of very good football players. His contributions are very much appreciated and he will be missed. We wish him the best moving forward."

What an asshole.

Right.
How dare he wish Bill Muir well in retirement.
bossmanham - February 1, 2012
What Was He Going To Do?
There was nowhere else to put Muir once he wasn’t the OC. He’s a good offensive line coach and that’s it and going back to that would be accepting a demotion. Unless you wanted to see another season of Muir as OC (a prospect which would not make me happy) it was pretty much inevitable he was going to leave.

but
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
and that's not "speculation" at all
upamtn - February 1, 2012
but the direct quotes from a week ago indicate that Muir was happy back at OLine Coach

so your saying there is a quote that says just that?
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
Does it mention Vrabel retiring?

Muir? nah ... too innocent to lie
upamtn - February 1, 2012
Using Gunther Cunningham As An Example
When Carl Peterson was able to bring him back to be the DC just a few years after firing him as head coach, that was (rightfully) considered a coup. Coaches are proud people. They don’t generally go back to places where they got fired. They don’t generally accept demotions unless they have no other options. There’s nothing Pioli could have done to keep him once he and Crennel decided to go elsewhere for OC…no matter how nice they were.
UCrawford - February 1, 2012
Coaches are a race now?
Nice.

It's obvious
Pioli is just getting rid of all the old folks.
ChiefWildcat - February 1, 2012
Yet
he just hired a 65 year old head coach. Interesting.

UCrawford - February 1, 2012
Dont be so hard on yourself, my Draconian Lord of Offense.
Now, re: your post above…when you take this offense over, are you going to throw Cassel in the gulag or what?!
go_saleaumua - February 1, 2012
I Shall Run Him In A West Coast Offense
Primarily because his arm is weak and it’s all I think he can handle. Then I shall convince Pioli to re-sign Brodie Croyle. Then, whenever Cassel fails, I shall put Croyle in behind our shoddy line and Cassel shall be subjected to the cracking sound of Croyle’s breaking bones and the screams he shall unleash as I punish him instead of Cassel for Cassel’s errors. Guilt shall be my motivator…and a powerful leash it shall be. :)
UCrawford - February 1, 2012
Did you just turn Brodie Croyle into a martyr?
Bama fans everywhere will call a jihad on your ass.

I’m not worried. :)
Nothing personal against Brodie, who I now wish well…seemed like a nice enough kid.

Overall this is still confusing:
However, it is apparently official.
Thank You Bill Muir,
You did a great job in 2010 as the OL coach. What a year it was, this whole situation reminds me of Mike Solari, a man put just a little too high on the totem pole before falling off it.
Somehow I see you pulling a Bruce Arians, because this doesn’t feel volunteery at all. For now, I will give the Chiefs the benefit of the doubt though and wish you well in your retirement. Thank you for your service as a Kansas City Chiefs coach. It was appreciated, hopefully now you can get some rest and relaxation.
Go Chiefs!
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
Not confusing to me.
He was told to retire or be fired. He chose to “retire”.

Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
Ha
And here I thought he had the inside scoop.
GenericBrand - February 1, 2012
Yes, it's speculation...ha ha. Like nobody else here does it.
Look at what the man said just a matter of days ago…and then he goes ahead and does what he says he doesn’t want to do?
I’d bet anything he was told he could either walk away gracefully…or get shit-canned.
Would I bet my life on it? No. We’ll never know for sure, I know that much. Thus, my speculation.
Scott B. - February 1, 2012
Meh...
If Muir has a job in the next couple weeks, we will know for sure.
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
Pretty sure he would have stayed if he could
But also think if he cant stay, He would rather not pack everything up and move at this point in his life, unless maybe they have an opening in arizona or florida. He could live in the villages!
danbre123 - February 1, 2012
The man IS 69. Younger and, I'm sure, poorer, men retire all the time.

Scott B. - February 1, 2012
Eh, maybe he's confused, or forgetful.
/not an ageist
Brsrkr - February 1, 2012
younger and poorer men sometimes try like hell to get a job and can't

Well, that's what young and poor men are for.
Slaving for the Illuminati.
Brsrkr - February 1, 2012
damnit, I'm supposed to BE the Illuminati
upamtn - February 1, 2012
That would only be speculation, too
Even if he does take another job somewhere else…I would be completely shocked if he ever said he was told to retire by the Chiefs.
But I bet he was, just the same.
Scott B. - February 1, 2012

Or
he knows who the next coordinator is going to be and didn’t want to work for him. Or his wife heard his comment about returning as OL coach and said she had enough and it was time to go to Arizona and retire. Or….a hundred other thiings. People change their minds all the time…wait….no they don’t…

Not the ideal coaching development phase for Mr. Perles.
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012

Too bad they didn’t hire somebody else last year when Muir got promoted.
Brsrkr - February 1, 2012

Brsrkr - February 1, 2012
I was thinking that.
Would this be a promotion for him?
bossmanham - February 1, 2012
from clipboard holder? yeah ... big step up
upamtn - February 1, 2012
Was kinda being sarcastic.
Sirianni was a receiver, and has been a QB, uh, assistant. I think O line coaches are usually O line guys. I don’t see one of those on our staff.
Brsrkr - February 1, 2012
Let's assume there was an ultimatum to retire or be fired.
So what? He could have just fired him outright. Instead, he MAY have said, “Bill, we want to go in another direction. But I deeply respect you and want to give you the opportunity to retire.”
Blah blah Pioli evil plah.
bossmanham - February 1, 2012
Happens all the time in the "real world"
Two people in the last year have left my employer after having the option of either being fired or resigning. But yeah, Pioli must be an asshat for forcing him to retre rather than straight up shit canning him. What a jerk.

it was really something watching him run in the red zone.
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
His patience was a big key.
I remember the sweeps to Willie’s side, he’d string it slowly along, jogging towards the sideline, and just when you thought he was going out of bounds, he’d cut it up field.
My buddy, who’s a Dolphin fan, hated that play when we played them, he called it the "Chiefs Sweep". “Well, here it comes again, Chiefs Sweep, and there ain’t shit we can do about it”.
Beautiful.
severn58 - February 1, 2012

Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012

Muir went into Pioli’s office for a discussion and …
upamtn - February 1, 2012
M's and R's are your downfall.
Brad-KC - February 1, 2012
At this point, the only way Chiefs can change my opinion on how I view their decisions or lack thereof is to bring in P Manning and let him hand pick OC and O line coach
It’s not like there are a lot of good candidates left at this point, most teams have already picked thru the top available OC and O line coaches. Fire Haley to get a head start on filling the position, then eventually hire the interim HC and then get rid of the OC and O line, Asst O line coach a month after the season is over after most other teams hiring staffs have almost filled all their openings… makes no sense unless they are bringing in Manning or half of the Giants or Pats staffs after the Superbowl
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012
Yes, let a player pick his coaches.
/NBA
Brsrkr - February 1, 2012
as opposed to having Cassel as QB and whoever is left to be OC and Oline coach
yes
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012
the chiefs have cleared out enough coaches for manning to become the oc/ qb in kc
niageriannit1 - February 1, 2012
where do you get the idea that Manning WANTS to be an OC?
upamtn - February 1, 2012
calling the plays like audibles every time he's under center. not an oc in the real term but the guy who calls the play at the line
niageriannit1 - February 1, 2012
he's great at that, but that's not being an OC
upamtn - February 1, 2012
okay i say the chiefs are setting it up for manning to influence the offense in play calling
niageriannit1 - February 1, 2012
Hahahaha.
Indy OCs have had the easiest job (if you want to call it that) in the NFL for the past 8 years.
Tomahawk29 - February 1, 2012
yep . i been calling manning the oc in indy for a long time
niageriannit1 - February 1, 2012
On Muir
He wasn’t going to be the OC after spending a season as the o-line coach. Unless they were planning on firing Crennel before he’d even coached a game and elevating Muir (which wasn’t going to happen) anything else was a demotion. People don’t hang around after demotions, generally.
I don’t really blame Pioli and Crennel for Muir going away. He wasn’t a good OC (although I think he was better than Haley) and so they didn’t have other options. But now I’m curious how long it’s going to take to fill his spot and who they’ll be able to get to replace him. Based on how it’s going with the rest of the staff, it’s not looking great.
UCrawford - February 1, 2012
I think
part of the problem with filling the open coaching positions is one that one of the questions that Romeo asks.
Romeo: So, it is 4th and 2 there is 40 seconds left on the clock, we are down by three on our 45 with three time outs remaining. I tell you that I want a snack. What do you get me?
Zif - February 1, 2012
Got To Go With Zebra Cakes
Always a winner. :)
UCrawford - February 1, 2012
A first down.
When do I start?
Brsrkr - February 1, 2012
Bzzzt
The correct answer is…
I am Romeo, and I am hungry…. So… Call a short 2 yard slant, run for the opposite sideline dragging the defense with you. Lateral the ball. The one the ball was tossed to runs for the opposite sideline looking for a total of a three yard gain. Prior to reaching the sideline lateral the ball again to Charles. By this time we have hopefully burned 30 – 35 seconds or more. Charles turns and runs for the end zone. Touchdown game over. Now go get me my snack!
Zif - February 1, 2012
That's what I don't understand. Some have blamed the late hiring of Haley and staff in year 1 as a reason for failure
They fire Haley mid-season to presumably and I think self-admittedly in the press conference to get a head start on the coaching search. They end up promoting within, still haven;t hired an OC (only logical explanation is they’re on a SB staff?) and just today realized that they need an Oline coach. As Muir stated at the Senior Bowl… “no ones talked to me about not coming back” This should have been discussed the Monday after the season was over
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012

Tomahawk29 - February 1, 2012
I think we are waiting for someone from NE or NY
more than likely NE….we have seen Pioli do the waitng game before when Haley was making his SB run with the Cards…..that is the only possible explaination for waiting this long and watching coach after coach get signed by other teams…..OR, coaches are just shying away and turning Pioli down…I REALLY dont think he is building himself a great reputation around the league….
KCinAZ - February 1, 2012
muir was handicapped all year by haley, when the boss always over rules u and doesn't let u do your job then

Anyone rumored to be in line to replace Emery? Muir the OC, Muir the Oline coach
or does Pioli get a free pass like 2009 when he didn’t have his own guys in place. He’s had 3 years now and everyone’s getting out of town one way or another. Other than a ST coach, no one’s been added to the staff and Romeo’s now wearing two hats instead of one. Senior bowl and East-West Shrine games are over, Combine’s in 22 days….Wake up Scotty
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012
There's not going to be a huge personnel turnover.
We’re retuning, not rebuilding.
Having to replace 3 or 4 coaches in an offseason isn’t that bad.
Tomahawk29 - February 1, 2012
maybe, but when Emery was rumored to be leaving for weeks and not wanting Muir back since season was over
seems like they don’t have plans in place when it takes them forever to make hires when other teams target who they want, interview and then hire within a week or two
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012
yep maybe muir will end up in chicago
he’s too young to retire

Tomahawk29 - February 1, 2012
The timing of this makes me wonder if we will have a new OC tomorrow
Perhaps:
Al Saunders or Hue Jackson?
Though nothing in Romeo’s past says he will go with Air Coryell.
Maybe Jeff Davidson is still on the Radar.
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
Hue Jackson seems to have an opinion, doesn't sound like a Pioli guy to me
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012

Regardless, I am ready to now the direction of this football team.
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
yes, hired and fired
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012
so because he didn't work out, Pioli won't hire someone else with an opinion?
Chief-blinders-on - February 1, 2012
After being the coach of half of the biggest blowouts in our team's history...
And having our team staggeringly unprepared to start the season? Yeah…
MNchiefsfan - February 1, 2012
well, the team isn't built to play from behind with Cassel at QB
Bellichick had 3, 20 or more point losses in 2008 with Cassel at QB in NE, which is about the same number per year as Haley with Cassel
Chiefs_KC - February 1, 2012
That's an excuse
The whole TEAM failed to show up some weeks… after a certain point that falls on the coach.
And doesn’t excuse the criminally disgusting display we put on the first couple of weeks. A totally unprepared team.
I like Haley and wish things had played out differently. But the man was completely inflexible, refusing to make adjustments as the game went along or even as the season went along. Also, he was far too blatant with his “favorites.”
To toss that firing on Pioli is ridiculous. There were two people there, and Pioli did more at his job (improving the talent of the team) than Haley did with his (coaching the team).
MNchiefsfan - February 1, 2012
Maybe Muir is pissed at the way the Chiefs handled Haley's firing
This was an odd retirement. The timing is strange.
