Last week reports out of New York said that the Kansas City Chiefs were interviewing the New York Giants' Jack Bicknell Jr. for their offensive line coaching job.
And this morning reports coming out of New York indicate the deal will get done. Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports the Chiefs are expected to hire Bicknell as their new offensive line coach. The Chiefs have not confirmed this news.
Bicknell was the Giants assistant offensive line coach under Pat Flaherty.
The position became available when Bill Muir, last year's offensive line coach (and offensive coordinator), retired. The Chiefs were planning on keeping Muir at offensive line coach if he didn't retire.
Bicknell is the brother of Bob Bicknell, who was previously an assistant on the Chiefs staff.
This leaves only a couple of spots to fill on the Chiefs staff -- assistant offensive line and receivers. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel indicated he knew what he wanted to do at receivers coach so this appears to be the last big hire on the staff.

Welcome aboard
Now go figure out how to win us some games.
ValkRider - February 13, 2012
Our future Offensive Coordinator?
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
Ha
When he reaches the ripe ole age of 90
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Solari didn't take that long.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
Tis true .
Nobody knows the pioli ways I guess
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
His claims to fame
per Wikipedia – hiking the ball on the Hail Flutie play & developing Anthony Castonzo. Color me unimpressed by the resume, yet surprised to see no apparent Patrioit-Pioli ties
KansasCityShuffle - February 13, 2012
Re: Unimpressive resume
Perhaps there’s something to “nobody wanting to work in KC” post-Peterson
KansasCityShuffle - February 13, 2012
idk...
name an available OL coach with an impressive resume that you’d prefer?
stagdsp - February 13, 2012
People wanted Will Shields.
A guy with virtually no experience. But at least he’d be a sexy name. I wouldn’t mind him getting the asst-OL job, though.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
agreed on Shields for assistant
stagdsp - February 13, 2012
I'll second that
The man knows some stuff . Be a good chance for him to learn more about coaching , maybe making it to oline coach someday
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Sorry stag u beat me
I’ll third that *
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Not only was he talented...
but Shields had great character as well…a rare combo these days in the NFL
supersoccersteven - February 13, 2012
Or any days, any where.
Brsrkr - February 13, 2012
You do realize...
Only 5 of our coaches have a Patriots tie? If you looked at our coaches resumes it appears to be more of a Parcell’s tree than a Patriots tree.
groundedchevy - February 13, 2012
Keep your AP meme-busting to yourself.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
Only five? What is that only 50%?
HIV 2 Elway - February 13, 2012
Given that the general argument is that we "only" take Patriot coaches
That’s pretty significant.
MNchiefsfan - February 13, 2012
To nit pick
the “general” argument is that ex-Pat coaches are first and then KC accepts anyone from the Parcell’s tree or who may have known Pioli…ever. In that order.
Sorry. Kind of an assy thing to say…
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
No, that's totally fine
And a good point.
MNchiefsfan - February 13, 2012
Off the top of my head...
I count 17 coaches (could be wrong)…the only argument is that the 3 main positions have Patriots ties (head coach OC and DC). Granted 2 of those positions are held by the same coach.
groundedchevy - February 13, 2012 via mobile
I can't believe this isn't a national story.
The Chiefs hiring coaches that they’ve had some connection with in the past? That probably never happens anywhere else.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
The other 31 teams hire complete fucking strangers
they’re so “innovative”…
PVChiefsfan - February 13, 2012
Other teams paint random coaches names on ping pong balls
then spin them around in a drum and pull out randomly, there you go, new coach.
When you are talking about such a small pool of coaches they are all going to have ties to each other. 32 teams, 17-18 coaches per team, you are only talking about 500-600 NFL coaches. Most of them probably know each other or are 1-2 degrees of separation. Probably don’t add more than another 1-2 degrees by adding in div 1 coaches.
Fozzyboyd - February 13, 2012
Your logic has no place here.
We only deal in irrational, emotional rants.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
Racist.
nateforchiefs - February 13, 2012
Racist? Is that Jason Whitlock?
Fozzyboyd - February 13, 2012
Wittless may or may not be racist. (50/50 chance).
There is a 100% chance he is no better than an ambulance chaser who values sensationalism over substance/truth.
DivineGrace - February 14, 2012
Pretty sure any coach with the SB champs could find better suitors if they wanted...
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
The only Patriot tie...
…is that he was on the team that beat them this year… :-)
JQuest - February 13, 2012 via Android app
Neat
Nice to get the coaches all in place as soon as possible to get the ball rolling. Can’t wait to hear about bowe and carts contract extension tho
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
We definitely need those carts on the field
KingChief - February 13, 2012
Yes we do !
O almost forgot , we need Carr too !
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
False.
I don’t know if I can take another year of our players being carted off.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
oh yeah, I heard a' him before ...............
Zulu Trader - February 13, 2012
As the hires keep coming along
i will say I do think Romeo is the guy making his hires, I am pleased with what he has done.
BuddyMcLoving - February 13, 2012
Underwhelming
Again.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Who would have whelmed you?
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
Dunno
But this sure doesn’t.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Position coaches rarely do.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
I for one can't even name one OL coach in the league
Im not sure what constitutes a “sexy hire” for our fans
nateforchiefs - February 13, 2012
Yea,
It ranks right up there with kickers coach. I, for one, am waiting for that opening at cheerleaders coach!
David Winton - February 13, 2012
Cheer Coach, interesting...
only if you get to be “hands-on” with your coaching style.
km230015 - February 13, 2012
I would have been pleased with a coach
from a top 15 rushing offense that didn’t have an elite QB carrying the offense.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
How about a coach that had good all around stats from his OL?
Not dead last in rushing ypc? We don’t need names, but I for one would be thrilled to have the OL coach/assistant OL coach of a team that consistently fields a good all around OL… like PHI, NE, NO, ATL, BAL etc.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
I don't care about a sexy hire, I want a good hire
then give him good players.
Fozzyboyd - February 13, 2012
So does this mean we are going with a power blocking scheme?
KingChief - February 13, 2012
Yes
and a no rushing offense until game 8 approach also.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
I doubt it
One of the compliments about our new OC was that he did a very good job of scheming and building the offense around the strength’s of his players. Several of our o-linemen are very good in the ZBS but might not do so well in a power scheme.
I wouldn’t expect it to change, but you never know.
PVChiefsfan - February 13, 2012
agreed
ZB stays
stagdsp - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Not several. Just Lilja and Weigs.
Brsrkr - February 13, 2012
i think those are just the guys that have previous experience in it
me personally, i wouldn’t stick albert or hudson in a power scheme either. and those are two guys that probably figure into our future a good amount. so there is 3 (i don’t count weigs for next year) out of 5 right off the bat that are probably more zone than power.
Chris Sembower - February 13, 2012
yeah, Albert could do it
but, it was such a struggle to get him used to ZBS, I wouldn’t want to start over
you have 80% of a STUD ZBS line… why scrap it now? just get a damn RT
stagdsp - February 13, 2012
Albert was drafted, in his own words, to be a road grader.
He could definitely play in a power scheme, probably better than he plays in the ZBS.
Hudson isn’t a 300+ pounder, but he’s low to the ground. He’s bigger and more athletic and maybe just as mean as Weigs was in 2003. Asamoah and another big guard on either side of him, he’d do find in a power scheme.
I think the only current player we have who’s kinda trapped in a ZB role is Lilja.
Brsrkr - February 13, 2012
BRich
Unless you’re not counting him because he’s a FA
nateforchiefs - February 13, 2012
I think he might be the least ZBS of all the starters.
He’s a road grader like Albert, but with slower feet.
Brsrkr - February 13, 2012
I read your original comment totally wrong
I took that as saying Lilja was the only non ZB linemen we have. I agree with your original assessment now that my head is out of my ass.
nateforchiefs - February 13, 2012
What he does have...
Is a Superbowl winning offensive line. (And a ring).. Give him a chance.. He was an assistant there.. I hope he’s ready to make an impact with our group.
PhxChief75 - February 13, 2012
He also had an offense with an elite QB
and that elite QB carried the team, time and again, when the OL was doing squat in the run game. Recipe for disaster in KC.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Giants pass protection has been great! And
That’s what we need to impove! Also Brandon Jacobs is not Jamal Charles !we will be fine in the run game. Stop being so negative!!! It is getting old already!!!!!!!!
albuquerquechiefsfan - February 13, 2012 via mobile
So we should sacrifice some of our run blocking for pass pro?
Since we already have a super stud RB, we can afford to sacrifice run blocking for pass pro, so our mediocre QB has more of a chance? I disagree. We need to play to our strengths, not our weaknesses.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
Thanks for telling me how to feel/think/post
Congrats on your 115th post.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Bradshaw getting hurt
Really affected the Giants run game. Jacobs is not a full time runner. Regardless of how it happened, they won the Superbowl with an aging line which is what every team in the league tries to do.
PhxChief75 - February 13, 2012
Understood
but you cannot ignore the QB situation there. Swap QBs and I guarantee they don’t even sniff the SB, no matter how “good” the OL was.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Underwhelmed with hiring an OC that didn't have any elite players
Now you are underwhelmed with hiring a position coach that did have am elite player.
Wow
RememberDelaney37 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Wow is right
The OC comes from a culture of losing, as I’ve stated. Further, I don’t care for this hire because the OL leaned on the QB, IMO, for the majority of the year. Why is this hard to understand?
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
So again, underwhelmed no matter what
The culture of winning or losing is based more on the players than on the coaches. Everybody comes from a culture of losing, until they aren’t anymore. So in talking about the culture, you are just saying that you wanted an OC that made his name from elite offensive players. I dare you to list any of the OCs you wanted; you confident that any of them did not come from a team worth likely an elite QB or RB???
RememberDelaney37 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Sweet mother of mercy...
Fine. Whatever. You’re right. I’m wrong. Moving along.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Would you take a defensive coach from New England?
They would be from a culture of winning, right?
(Not trying to pile on. Just adding to my point)
Moving on
RememberDelaney37 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
No because the disdain for the "all things NE" fetish at Arrowhead
trumps the “culture of winning” ideal.
LOL
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Sad but true
RememberDelaney37 - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Heh
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
Very nice. I like this hire
bossmanham - February 13, 2012
IMO
This is another good hire the Giants o line has
Been really good hopefully he could do the same with ours.
It seems to me that there are alot of people on this site that are not happy with the moves we have made so far? But when u ask them who or what they would of done the have no answer?
(if your not part of the solution your part of the problem)
albuquerquechiefsfan - February 13, 2012 via mobile
I think
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
I think eli was the one doing good
Line was questionable at times . Problem is we don’t have an elite qb . In fact not even a qb that performs well under any pressure
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
But I think he will be good coach
Let’s hope anyways
chiefsman! - February 13, 2012 via mobile
But that's exactly what these site's are about, the good and the bad
Just as company fans should be able to praise every move made, sceptics should be able to bash everything as well. Alright, I’m off my soapbox and off to Rage Against the Machine elsewhere, free Leonard Peltier or some junk.
severn58 - February 13, 2012
Dead last in rush ypc.
We just hired an OL coach that coached a line that was 32nd in the NFL in rushing yards per carry. We’re a run first team. How does that sound like a good hire to you?
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
Stop being negative!
for the record, I agree.
SCKSChief - February 13, 2012
He's better than Muir and probably won't fall asleep.
Good Hire.
Mitul V. Patel - February 13, 2012
I like the hire! He was a coach on one of the best and most physical lines in the league.
Good, very good.
NigerianNightmare - February 13, 2012
Welcome aboard.
Lots of work to do.
higgige7 - February 13, 2012
This is a great hire!
The reason this is good because he was the one who created goal line offensive game planning for the giants. We all know the chiefs were horrible in this area of the game. It seems a lot of you are having a negative attitude towards hires based off thier wiki sites? Seriously people give these people a chance before you judge them. We as fans have no idea what these coaches did behind the scenes at thier previous teams.
Everyone’s opinion is important but when your negative because of only seeing a wiki page is just a bit immature. That is just my opinion. :)
bstrackstar - February 13, 2012 via mobile
Yeah, I wonder if his goal line resume was the main reason Crennel hired him.
I am cautiously optimistic.
Brsrkr - February 13, 2012
Wake me up when we sign a good quarterback.
old_school - February 13, 2012
You got it, Rip Van Winkle.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
Meh.
Again, the hire fails to impress.
The Giants were 7th in QB sacks allowed… but dead last in average rush yards per attempt, at 3.5 ypc.
Not saying it can’t work out… but I have to admit I don’t have high hopes for this. It almost looks as if Pioli is building a staff catered to work with Cassel. Daboll, the guy that worked miracles with Moore. Now Bicknell, a guy that is apparently known for coaching a good pass pro line… but not so much run block. Uggghh.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
Almost looks like every move is centered around Cassel.
If that’s what you’re looking for.
Tarkus - February 13, 2012
God I hope not.
Maybe they’re just prepping for RG3… right? heh heh heh (nervous laugh, if you couldn’t tell)
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
Getting coaches to work with the talent your team has is a good strategy IMO
nateforchiefs - February 13, 2012
Right...
And our talent includes a stud RB. We just led the league in rushing 2 years ago. It just doesn’t sit well with me that we hired an OL coach that coached a line that was DEAD LAST in rushing ypc. Maybe I’ll look further back on his work… might sit a little better then, considering that Bradshaw was injured for a good portion of this year.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
Results:
19th in ypc in 2009
6th in ypc in 2010.
Again: Meh.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
Bradshaw was injured and they lost some talent on the OL.
Im not to worried about this hire.
nateforchiefs - February 13, 2012
I'm not saying definitively that it was a bad hire.
But the track record leaves much to be desired. I’ll wait and see. Hope for the best, and all of that.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
agreed
stagdsp - February 13, 2012
Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don't think they were really all that good at pass blocking.
Eli made them look good in that department.
Brsrkr - February 13, 2012
I’m OK with this hire. Now, when can we replace our OC???
Topchief1 - February 13, 2012
LOL. Really?
I feel much better about Daboll than I do Bicknell.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
For anyone talking about this 32nd in rushing and us being a rushing team
I would just like to state the only RB we have under contract just got off crutches or may still be on them idk. But for you to think that we have the best rusher in the league still is just absurd we may have nothing in JC anymore nobody knows
Kmillz2525 - February 13, 2012
he hasn't been on crutches in a while
my brother waited on him where he works like two or three months ago and he was walking around then
these days, with the state of medical technology, he probably has to worry about overcoming the mental blow from the injury than the physical part. from what I understand you can pretty much expect a full physical recovery if everything is done right in the first place (surgery, rehab, etc).
i’m just being optimistic, though. i fully agree with your point about not knowing what we have in him. can’t risk that this year. it made too big a difference last year :(
Chris Sembower - February 13, 2012
I have to agree
http://www.nfl.com/fantasy/story/09000d5d826d092c/article/acl-surgery-research-shows-decline-in-running-back-stats
We are actually really lucky that all three of our stars had surgery so early.
groundedchevy - February 13, 2012
Priest Holmes, Adrian Peterson.
Both had ACL tears in their careers. Both went on to have some amazing years after the tears happened.
Modern medicine is pretty efficient.
Tomahawk29 - February 13, 2012
Kareem McKenzie a Chief?
Obvious Giants connection with Bicknell and would give a OT draft choice a bit of time before having to start a RT. Also takes the pressure off of drafting a RT early.
otis8989 - February 13, 2012
I do like the Giants connection here
Coughlin runs a pretty good program up there. It’ll be nice to have a connection to some of those players.
Chris Sembower - February 13, 2012
They guy has been a HC at the college level
and had some decent success at a terrible school. His experience is pretty impressive overall for an O-Line coach. I think he’ll be a great addition to our staff. The dude has been a part of a SB winning team…so he should know a thing or two about how to get there.
cheapham - February 13, 2012
It'll be interesting to see how everyone meshes together...I'm already anxious to see the finished product on the field this year
